‘Fuze’ Review: Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James Headline David Mackenzie’s Savvy, Hunk-Filled Heist Thriller
Image
The opening credits of the heist thriller Fuze flicker and shake like action-movie credits used to do back in the good old Tony Scott days. That’s an early indication that the film, from director David Mackenzie and writer Ben Hopkins, has a clear sense of what tradition it wants to honor. The film prizes style, but has no higher ambition than to entertain, with an economy of means and no fussy pretension. That’s a noble mission, especially in this time of auteur worship, when so many genre movies seem determined to be something more.

Mackenzie, the director behind sturdy films like Hell or High Water, keeps Fuze trotting along at a steady clip. It begins as a story of civic suspense: A London construction crew unwittingly digs up an unexploded bomb from the Blitz, similar to an event that really happened in Plymouth last year. It’s a compelling setup,...

Are the Amazing Spider-Man Movies on Netflix? Complete Streaming Guide
Image
The Amazing Spider-Man movies star Andrew Garfield as the web crawler and Emma Stone as his love interest, Gwen Stacy. Starting September 1, 2025, the two movies will be on Netflix.

Despite the financial success of the film series, they did not perform as well as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Sony had planned a bigger universe with the Andrew Garfield movies, like Sinister Six and Black Cat. The second movie not meeting financial expectations led to The Amazing Spider-Man 3 getting cancelled, along with its spinoffs. Another reason is the internal tension that Sony was facing with Andrew Garfield after he did not attend an important press event.

Netflix’s New Releases Coming in September 2025
Image
The concluding part of season two of Wednesday; the story of Charlie Sheen’s redemption; a clash between the two greatest super middleweights in the world; an A-list crime drama starring Jude Law and Jason Bateman; a lavish period drama from the creator of Peaky Blinders; and the third season of one of the most talked-about Japanese sci-fi shows are among the highlights of the new film and TV projects hitting Netflix in September.

Starting the month off strong is part two of season two of Wednesday, that hits Netflix on Sept. 3. There’s no need to introduce this absolute monster hit for the streamer, as seemingly everyone is watching — the first half of Wednesday season two delivered 50 million views worldwide, the most views for an English-language show’s opening week on the streamer since season one of Wednesday. Part two kicks off with “Hide and Woe Seek,” the 13th...

Having been involved in the film industry for nearly 45 years, Denzel Washington has seen everything there is to see in Hollywood, given his experience, CV and the luminaries he's collaborated with over that time. Image
Denzel Washington’s career is filled with award-winning performances, iconic roles, and box office hits — but few films in his catalog stand out quite like Inside Man. Released in 2006, the Spike Lee–directed heist thriller grossed $184.4 million worldwide and remains one of the most acclaimed entries in Washington’s filmography as well as the highest-grossing movie in Lee's career. Now, the film and its entirely unnecessary sequel, Inside Man: Most Wanted, are heading to Netflix on September 1.

Inside Man is widely regarded as one of the best heist films of the 21st century. The story follows an elaborate Wall Street bank robbery that spirals into a tense hostage situation. Washington stars as Detective Keith Frazier,...

Denzel Washington joined GQ for a video interview with his “Highest 2 Lowest” director Spike Lee and co-star A$AP Rocky and made the surprising revelation that he no longer watches movies. How Spike Lee’s Musical Instincts Helped Shape His New Film ‘Highest 2 Lowest’
Image
Spike Lee’s brilliance as a movie director has never been in question. For decades, moviegoers have come to appreciate his eye for artsy, captivating visuals, such as the opening montage of his latest film, Highest 2 Lowest, which begins with the magnificence of a Brooklyn morning. Lee’s sense for music direction is also inspired. He chose to score the scene with singer Norm Lewis’ cover of Gordon MacRae’s “Oh What A Beautiful Mornin’,” from the 1955 film Oklahoma. Lee says he chose the song to intentionally juxtapose pastoral lyrics,...

Denzel Washington On Surprise Rap Battle In Highest 2 Lowest: "I've Been Listening To Rap For Decades"
Image
Denzel Washington has addressed the surprise battle in Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest, an English-language modern reimagining of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low set against the pulsating backdrop of New York's music scene. Highest 2 Lowest is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring 91% since its theatrical release on Aug. 15, and is gearing up to hit Apple TV+ on Sept. 5. ‘Where’s the bag?’ Inside the high-octane chase scene on ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ inspired by ‘The French Connection’
Image
The highlight of Highest 2 Lowest, Spike Lee's reinvention of Akira Kurosawa's classic crime thriller High and Low, is the high-octane New York subway ransom drop-off and police chase to retrieve the $17.5 million in Swiss francs belonging to music mogul David King (Denzel Washington).

King grapples with the same moral dilemma as his shoe magnate counterpart in High and Low played by Toshiro Mifune: whether or not to pay the ransom to save the son of his best friend and chauffeur (Jeffrey Wright), who was kidnapped instead of King's son by mistake. Once he's all in, King must deliver the ransom bag on a 6 Train from Borough Hall in Brooklyn to the Bronx — and it's off to the races.

But to spice it up, Lee looked to another classic crime thriller with two iconic subway chases (on foot and by car) for inspiration: William Friedkin's The French Connection.

Channel 4 has commissioned a new series written by Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat, The Hollywood Reporter can reveal.

Number 10, a political drama about the most famous address in the world, 10 Downing Street in London — where the British prime minister lives and works — will be produced by Hartswood Films, part of ITV Studios.

“There’s a Prime Minister in the attic, a coffee bar in the basement, and a wallpapered labyrinth of romance, crisis and heartbreak in-between,” a Number 10 plot synopsis provided to THR reads. “Set in the only terrace house in history with mice and a nuclear deterrent, it’s the only knock-through in the world where a hangover can start a war. The government will be fictional, but the problems will be real. We’ll never know which party is in power, because once the whole world hits the fan it barely matters.”

‘Denzel and I, We’re Jazz Musicians’: Spike Lee on ‘Highest 2 Lowest’
Image
Leave it to Spike Lee to explode the typical high-stakes remake. His new film, Highest 2 Lowest, which opened Friday, flips Akira Kurosawa’s mannered 1963 staple, High and Low, into a rowdy, topical, laugh-out-loud romp (starring Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright, and A$AP Rocky) that’s as beautifully jarring as a dissonant sax solo. On a recent call from New York, Lee invokes the analogy himself: “Denzel and I in this film — we’re jazz musicians. We respect Julie Andrews singing ‘My Favorite Things.’ But when John Coltrane did it, you know,...

Al Pacino’s Real-Life Crime Drama Inspired Denzel Washington and Spike Lee’s Thriller Before Highest 2 Lowest
Image
Before Spike Lee and Denzel Washington reunited for their new movie Highest 2 Lowest, the duo worked together in 2006’s Inside Man, a heist thriller that drew inspiration from Al Pacino‘s Dog Day Afternoon. The 1975 movie, directed by Sidney Lumet, is based on a real-life Brooklyn bank robbery.

John Wojtowicz attempted to rob a Chase Manhattan Bank to pay for his partner’s gender-affirming surgery. Dog Day Afternoon dramatized this true event of 1972. Al Pacino portrayed Sonny Wortzik, a fictionalized version of Wojtowicz. The movie’s intense hostage action, media frenzy, and underlying social themes turned it into an instant hit of American cinema.

The modern take in Inside Man brought back the twist-filled theme between a masked thief and an NYPD hostage negotiator. But behind all this was a deep respect for Lumet’s movie.

Denzel Washington and Spike Lee's New Movie Solidifies Itself as One of Their Best on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
One of the most acclaimed actor-director duos in the history of American cinema reunited this week with the film Highest 2 Lowest. Directed by Spike Lee and headlined by Denzel Washington, it has turned out to be their top-rated film ever, which is no mean feat, considering they’ve delivered classics such as Malcolm X and Inside Man in the past. Highest 2 Lowest marks Apple’s second theatrical play of the year, following the record-breaking success of the sports drama F1.

The movie is based on the Akira Kurosawa police procedural High and Low. It’s currently sitting at a “certified fresh” 90% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Spike Lee and Denzel Washington remix a classic with vibrantly...

Spike Lee Praises A$AP Rocky’s Acting In ‘Highest 2 Lowest’: “Don’t Sleep On A$AP”

The 10 Greatest Three-Movie Runs by an Actor Ever
Image
What is the greatest three-movie run by an actor? Well, first, let me define what I mean by greatest, and what I mean by three-movie run. For my purposes, “greatest” is measured by an equal consideration of movie quality, performance quality, box office, and pop culture relevance. In other words, the films/performances have to be good and well-known. Now, a three-movie run just means three consecutive films in an actor’s filmography. I’m going based on release date, so sometimes having multiple films in a year removes an actor from contention.

So, a good three-movie run is not easy to pull off.. There are a lot of well-known actors who don’t even sniff this list. Here are a few actors you won’t see in the Top 10: Matt Damon, Ethan Hawke, Nicolas Cage, Matthew McConaughey Bradley Cooper. I tried to get a Jack Nicholson 1970’s run on the list,...

A Hit Denzel Washington And Spike Lee Crime Movie Had A Sequel Without Them
Image
If there's one thing you can expect from a Spike Lee Joint, it's the unexpected. He's brought his controversial and confrontational filmmaking style to every genre under the sun, from gritty dramas to satirical comedies, musicals and vampire flicks, and everything in between. So, when Lee brought his cops and robbers flick "Inside Man" to theaters in 2006, he did what was really unexpected: He made a straight down the middle Hollywood picture starring his trusty leading man Denzel Washington, albeit one with Lee's characteristic verve.

Taking inspiration from Sidney Lumet's classic crime thriller "Dog Day Afternoon," which the filmmaker has called one of his favorite movies of all time, Lee used the bank robbery film as an opportunity to assemble a microcosm of New York City's melting pot diversity among the bank's hostages. As the standoff drags on and on in "Inside Man," we get to see just how...

Die Hard Fans Should Check Out This Daisy Ridley Action Movie On HBO Max
Image
After the controversial and oftentimes hated "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, Rey actress Daisy Ridley has had difficulty finding box office and critical success. Dystopian thrillers were outdated by the time the overly grim "Chaos Walking" came out in 2021, the Trudy Ederle biopic "Young Woman and the Sea" was too bland, and the psychological thriller "The Marsh King's Daughter" snoozed audiences rather than intrigued them. Her quietly fragile performance in "Sometimes I Think About Dying" was exquisite, but it was such a tiny indie release and the title might be off-putting to some.

Ridley recently starred in "Cleaner," which did poorly at the box office, earning only $1 million on a $25 million budget. Although it flew under the radar, "Cleaner" deserves far more credit. It's the kind of taut, explosive action flick for grown-ups that doesn't really exist anymore because theatres are bogged down with IP-driven franchises. The plot of terrorists taking...

Denzel Washington's 90% Rotten Tomatoes Early Career WWII Murder Mystery Marches Onto Streaming Soon
Image
Before Denzel Washington became the Hollywood mainstay he is today with The Equalizer franchise, the Oscar-winning Training Day, and plenty of other award-nominated roles, he made his first real mark on the big screen with A Soldier's Story in 1984. Directed by Norman Jewison, the film is a murder mystery set against the backdrop of World War II and featuring the star as a private under the command of the victim, Major Sergeant Vernon Waters (Adolph Caesar). It marked only Washington's second theatrical film role and earned him some early recognition that would help pave the way to bigger spotlights and accolades aplenty. For fans wanting to dive into his early filmography, the title is now coming to Paramount+ on July 1.

A Soldier's Story was written by Charles Fuller, who created it for the theater under the name A Soldier's Play. Washington, like many of his co-stars, was part of...

Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists, Scott Stuber Board Action-Thriller ‘The Seventh Man’ From ‘Carry On’ Writer T.J. Fixman (Exclusive)
Image
Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists and Scott Stuber are developing “The Seventh Man,” a new action-thriller that’s written by T.J. Fixman.

Stuber and Fixman previously collaborated on “Carry On,” a hostage thriller with Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman that Jaume Collet-Serra directed. The film was a hit for Netflix and currently sits in second place on the streamer’s list of most popular movies.

Stuber was in charge of Netflix’s film unit before leaving the company in 2024. He then announced he had signed a multi-year film partnership with Amazon MGM Studios under which the company agreed to finance and release movies from Stuber’s new production company under the United Artists (UA) label. The hope was to revitalize the brand, which once produced classics like “Rocky” and “Network” before it faded.

UA’s Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce “The Seventh Man” with Fixman serving as executive producer.

Spike Lee Would Trade an Oscar for a Knicks NBA Title: ‘I Got Two Already’
Image
Legendary director Spike Lee received a standing ovation when he finally took home his first competitive Academy Award for writing “BlacKkKlansman” in 2019. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 2015. But the “Inside Man” filmmaker said he is willing to relinquish one of statuettes in exchange for the New York Knicks winning the NBA Championship.

“I would give [an] Academy Award — Oscar — for the Knicks to win a championship,” Lee said May 29 on “Inside the NBA” prior to the Knick’s 111-94 win over the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. “I got two already.”

Charles Barkley quickly interrupted Lee with sarcastic skepticism.

“You’re gonna keep ‘em,” he qupped.

Lee is a longtime fan of the Knicks. He was at Madison Square Garden on May 8, 1970, for the Knicks’ first championship — and he has the late Coach Red Holzman’s ring around his neck to prove it, as well as...

Apple TV+ Seriously Needs to Rethink their Release Strategy for Denzel Washington’s ‘Highest 2 Lowest’
Image
Denzel Washington’s new movie Highest 2 Lowest is all set for theatrical release, and fans are not happy with its limited 2 week run before it hits 2 Apple TV+. Director Spike Lee and Denzel Washington have collaborated in several films before; this one, probably Washington’s last, needs a bigger theatrical run to honor the brilliant actor’s film journey.

Feels like a disservice to the artistic pedigree of the film, and is a huge misstep by Apple TV+. The movie has already debuted at Cannes 2025 to receive raving reviews and a standing ovation. The movie deserved a victory lap across theatres globally, rather than a discrete pit stop. A movie of this magnitude deserves a full theatrical rollout rather than just streaming credits.

Will Denzel Washington’s Highest 2 Lowest get a theatrical release?

Officially, yes, the movie is getting a theatrical release. It drops in theatres on August 22, 2025, in the USA.

Streaming shockers: The most viewed Netflix titles turning stomachs and heads
Image
The latest top five lists of the most viewed movies and shows on Netflix, as listed by Tudum, contain some shockers. It's not that they are bad to watch, though. Some are hard to watch, especially if you have a delicate stomach.

There is just one new entry to last week's top five movies list. And what an entry when it comes to stomach churning. Given that it also uncovers a phony health scam, it won’t leave you feeling good. Three of the other movies cover a variety of crime and violence, too. Thankfully, there's also a heartwarming film that’s an antidote to the others, which will leave you hungry for more

It’s quite a change around on the top five shows, with three new entries this week. But the balance is still towards the tough-to-watch, uncomfortable viewing, a murder, and a major manhunt. This time, though,...

Before Spike Lee, Akira Kurosawa’s ‘High and Low’ Inspired Steven Soderbergh’s TV Show That Only Lasted One Season

Spike Lee’s upcoming neo-noir crime thriller movie, Highest 2 Lowest, is said to be an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low. The movie, which follows a similar story line to High and Low, stars Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright, A$AP Rocky, and more. It recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film was filmed across New York City, with some of the elaborate action scenes in the Bronx, set against the backdrop of Yankee Stadium. Fans have high expectations from the movie, knowing that it’s a Lee and Washington collaboration. But Highest 2 Lowest has reminded fans about Steven Soderbergh’s project for Max, which was not renewed after season 1.

Denzel Washington Skips Cannes Film Festival Event After Confrontation With A Photographer On Red Carpet
Image
Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington decided to skip the press conference for his new film after he had a curt exchange with a photographer at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday night.

Washington was present at the festival to promote Highest 2 Lowest, directed by Spike Lee.

An A24 remake of the 1963 film High and Low, Highest 2 Lowest is set to be released in theaters on Aug. 22, and be available to stream on Apple TV+ on Sept. 5.

Surprising footage from the red carpet that night has shown Washington pointing his finger in the face of one of the photographers, in the heat of a dramatic interaction.

Jeremy Freeman, an expert lip-reader, shared with The Daily Mail on Tuesday that Washington appeared to be upset that the photographer tapped him on the arm to get his attention. He estimated Washington’s words to be, “Let me tell you — stop, stop. Never put your hands on me again…...

Spike Lee: “I was shocked” It Took Me So Long to Work With Denzel Washington Again in ‘Highest 2 Lowest’
Image

An adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 Japanese classic High and Low, the film marks their fifth collaboration since Inside Man, which was released in 2006. And Lee admitted he was surprised to realize just how much time had passed since their last collaboration.

'I Think This Is It': Spike Lee on Why He Might Be Finished Working With Denzel Washington After 5 Films
Image
A24's upcoming action thriller, Highest 2 Lowest, represents the fifth collaboration between Oscar winners Spike Lee and Denzel Washington throughout their distinguished careers. Though their joint efforts have been critically acclaimed, and their newest movie is already garnering praise, Lee suggests their time as creative partners could be over.

During an interview with Deadline, Lee admitted he didn't realize so much time had elapsed between him and Washington's last collaboration, Inside Man, and Highest 2 Lowest. The decorated filmmaker also conceded that, considering the stage of their careers and Washington's recent quips about retirement, Highest 2 Lowest is probably their last movie together. "Denzel and I didn’t know that our previous film, Inside Man, was 18 years ago. We were surprised because it felt like yesterday. But we didn’t miss a step," Lee said. "I think this is it—five. He’s been talking about retirement even...

The Cannes 2025 Films So Far Most Likely to End Up in the Oscar Race
Image
It was moving to watch Denzel Washington lope up to the Lumière stage at Cannes and tear up as he accepted his Honorary Palme d’Or from Cannes veteran Spike Lee Monday night at the “Highest 2 Lowest” premiere. It was a surprise to the actor, as he watched a clip reel that ranged from his four prior roles with Lee to “Philadelphia,” “Flight,” “The Book of Eli,” “The Hurricane,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” “Fences,” and more.

Festival director Thierry Frémaux knows how to make the most of a Hollywood movie star, who flew into France and out again on his one day off from doing eight sold-out shows a week as Shakespeare’s “Othello” on Broadway. If the man looked weary, it’s understandable. At 70, he’s at the peak of his powers, and if the Oscar gods are smiling, he’ll land his third Oscar (after “Training Day” and...

'Highest 2 Lowest' Sets a New Rotten Tomatoes Record for Denzel Washington and Spike Lee
Image
Denzel Washingtonand Spike Lee have teamed up once again for their latest joint, and it is one that the critics are seemingly "high" on. The A24 and Apple Original Film Highest 2 Lowest has become the duo's highest-rated film so far on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing all the other Washington-Lee projects that the pair have become famous for. It should mark the high point of the men's collaborative effort, almost two decades after they last worked together.

As of this article's publication, Highest 2 Lowest currently has a critic's score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 12 professional reviews. No audience score is currently listed, though this is likely to change this summer when the film debuts theatrically (and eventually on Apple TV+). The film's rating is unsurprising given its positive reviews, with Collider's Therese Lacson sayingHighest 2 Lowest is a "vibrant, loud, and full of life" film that is a "delight to watch.

Cannes Day 7: A Denzel Washington Surprise
Image
Cannes has been going on for a full week straight, and it’s easy to lose track of time, what with all of the big stars and glitzy premieres, like, you know, Spike Lee debuting his heavily hyped new film.

Spike Lee Returns and Denzel Washington Nabs a Palme d’Or

Spike Lee is back with a brand-new joint. And his leading man got the top honors.

“Highest 2 Lowest” reunites Lee with his frequent collaborator Denzel Washington for a remake/reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s immortal classic “High and Low.” Kurosawa’s film, like Lee’s, was based on Ed McBain’s 1959 novel “King’s Ransom,” part of his 87th Precinct series. The A24/Apple Original Films production, which hits theaters in August before premiering on the Apple TV+ streaming service the following month, brought out Lee (who missed a Knicks game to be there), Washington and more.

'Highest 2 Lowest' Debuts to Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Score After Cannes Premiere
Image
Nearly 20 years after Spike Lee and Denzel Washington joined forces for the 2006 thriller Inside Man, the duo are finally back together for the reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 Japanese film High and Low. Titled Highest 2 Lowest, the neo-noir crime thriller made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday and has debuted to an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 92%, signifying that Lee and Washington could have another hit on their hands when the film hits theaters later this year.

Also starring Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Asap Rocky, and Ice Spice in her film debut, Highest 2 Lowest features Washington as David King, a music mogul who's widely known for having the "best ears in the business." When he's targeted with a ransom plot, King finds himself jammed up in a life-or-death moral dilemma.

Critic Matt Neglia from Next Best Picture notes that the film isn't just a "welcome reunion between two of cinema's greats,...

“Don’t Put Your Hands On Me”: Denzel Washington Almost Equalized A Paparazzo Who Overstepped On The Cannes Red Carpet
Image
Denzel Washington had an intense moment on the Cannes red carpet this week. Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest was recently screened at Cannes, which is showing out of competition at the festival. The movie is a modern retelling of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low, with this version chronicling the story of a New York City music mogul who gets caught up in a ransom plot. It is the fifth film collaboration between Lee and Washington, and their first since Inside Man.

Not everything went smoothly during the Highest 2 Lowest premiere, however, as evidenced by a video from the Cannes red carpet. While speaking with director Lee and co-star A$AP Rocky, Washington appears to be interrupted by a photographer who is touching his arm. After the actor told the photographer to stop, he got into an intense exchange with the photographer. This elicited some strong, supportive responses online. Check...
