Pedro Pascal in Talks to Lead Fellow ‘Star Wars’ Creative Tony Gilroy’s ‘Behemoth!’
Image
Pedro Pascal is staying within the “Star Wars” family, but this time, for an indie film. IndieWire can confirm that the “Mandalorian” actor is in talks to lead “Andor” creator Tony Gilroy’s feature “Behemoth!” for Searchlight Pictures. Deadline reported that the deal is not yet closed.

The plot remains still under wraps but the feature is believed to be centered on a cellist. Oscar Isaac was originally attached in the lead role, which Pascal is now eyeing. Gilroy will produce the yet-untitled film along with Sanne Wohlenberg. Principal photography will begin this fall in Los Angeles, with release plans to be announced at a later date.

Pascal has been playing musical chairs to juggle his full slate of projects: The actor appeared in “The Last of Us: Season 2, “Materialists,” “Eddington,” and “Fantastic Four: First Steps” all in 2025. He will reprise his “Fantastic Four” role of Reed Richards for “Avengers: Doomsday...

‘Peaky Blinders’ & ‘Alex Rider’ Exec Nicole Finnan Debuts Jaeger Media
Image
Exclusive: Nicole Finnan, the veteran UK producer and commercial director who most recently led Peaky Blinders producer Caryn Mandabach Productions, has launched her own consultancy business.

Jaeger Media will look to work with start-up and small-to-mid-size producers, artists and influencers to help them maximize commercial opportunities and protect their IP. Services will be available through a simple fee structure.

Finnan is well-known for her commercial acumen in the British TV and film space, and with so many indie producers struggling to stay afloat as the traditional commissioning business model strains, independent advice and support is being sought more often. Notably, Finnan was part of the teams that launched UK drama houses Ecosse Films, Ruby Film & Television and Eleventh Hour Films.

Beginning her TV career at Brideshead Revisited and Mistresses producer Ecosse, she rose to Commercial and Finance Director, before moving to Ruby Film, where she was exec producer on Jason Isaac...

Jeremy Irons movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
A winner of Oscars, Emmys and Tonys, Jeremy Irons has been delivering top-notch performances for four decades now, and as he has been turning his sights back to television in recent years. I suspect that we are in store for many more great performances to come.

Irons is one-for-one at the Academy Awards, winning for his only nomination in Barbet Schroeder‘s “Reversal of Fortune” as suspected murderer Claus von Bülow, considered by many to be one of the definitive performances of the ’90s. It also brought Irons his first Golden Globe Award. Irons is also perfect at the Tony Awards, winning the Best Actor award for Tom Stoppard‘s 1984 production of “The Real Thing”. And he was won three of the five Emmy Awards for which he has been nominated, both as an actor and as a narrator (especially with that voice).

Irons last graced American TV screens in...

Emerald Fennell Announces ‘Wuthering Heights’ Adaptation
Image
Emerald Fennell just announced her third feature film, and this time, it’ll be an adapted screenplay.

Fennell is set to direct the latest adaptation of Emily Brontë’s beloved “Wuthering Heights” novel. Fennell tweeted a logo for the feature, along with the tagline, “Be with me always. Take any form. Drive me mad.”

IndieWire reached out to Fennell’s representatives for confirmation.

The Oscar winner made her feature directorial debut with “Promising Young Woman” and released “Saltburn” in 2023. Fennell deemed “Saltburn” a “fully Gothic” twisted love story, and now, “Wuthering Heights” will lean into both of those genres. The feature will also reunite Fennell with MRC on the production side, which she collaborated with for “Saltburn.”

“Wuthering Heights” centers on the tortured romance between Cathy and Heathcliff that is rife with revenge.

Fennell previously told Vanity Fair that her filmmaking passion is telling stories of darker desires.

“For that...

Jeremy Irons & Bille August Say Their ‘Count Of Monte Cristo’ Adaptation Could Only Work On The Small Screen – Series Mania
Image
Jeremy Irons and double-Palme d’Or winner Bille August are gearing up for their highly-anticipated Count of Monte Cristo series but when offered the chance to work on the project, they had certain red lines.

“I wouldn’t have taken it if it was a movie, it had to be TV,” Danish director August told Deadline at Series Mania. “The story is so rich and deserves TV. For this one it was obvious.”

Oscar-winner Irons said TV series can do “these great novels justice” in a way that some movies can’t, referencing his breakout work on 1981’s Brideshead Revisited, which was across 13 episodes. Both stars have skewed towards movies during their decorated careers and Count Of Monte Cristo has never been made for TV. A 2002 movie version saw Richard Harris play Irons’ role.

“With TV’s insatiable appetite for material it seemed for this great novel, we needed to...

Michael Gambon, Dumbledore in ‘Harry Potter’ Franchise, Dies at 82
Image
Michael Gambon, the Irish-English actor best known for his role as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in six of the “Harry Potter” movies, has died, Variety has confirmed. He was 82.

“We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon,” his family said in a statement. “Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia.”

While it is easier for a character actor, often working in supporting roles, to rack up a large number of credits than it is for lead actors, Gambon was enormously prolific, with over 150 TV or film credits in an era when half that number would be impressive and unusual — and this for a man whose body of stage work was also prodigious.

He played two real kings of England: King Edward VII in “The Lost Prince” (2003) and his son, King George V,...

‘Olivier was jealous of me’: TV drama pioneer Derek Granger at 100
Emma Thompson, Matthew Goode, Ben Whishaw, and Hayley Atwell in Retorno a Brideshead (2008)
On his centenary, the veteran producer recalls adding punch to Coronation Street, bringing Brideshead to the screen and his ‘turbulent’ relationship with one of the acting world’s greats

There are more than 22,000 centenarians in the UK, and on 23 April there will be a sprightly addition to their number: Derek Granger, a former Granada TV producer whose credits include Brideshead Revisited and Coronation Street. Talking to Granger in his Thames-side flat, I don’t get the sense of a man who lives in the past: the latest books are on his desk alongside current copies of the New Yorker and the Times Literary Supplement, and he talks enthusiastically of pre-lockdown theatre visits to see Andrew Scott in Present Laughter and Ian McKellen in King Lear.

One figure who threads his way through Granger’s extraordinary life – and about whom he talks with caustic candour – is Laurence Olivier. It was through Olivier’s intervention that Granger,...

Cate Blanchett Teams With Todd Field on Focus Features’ ‘Tar’
Image
Todd Field may finally, at long last, be sliding back behind the camera after many projects have fallen by the wayside.

The “In the Bedroom” director will team with Oscar winner Cate Blanchett on “Tar,” which Field also wrote. Focus Features will release the film. Details are being shrouded in secrecy, but according to Deadline, which broke the news, production will begin in the fall.

Field hasn’t directed a movie since 2006’s “Little Children,” but in that fifteen year break he has been linked to several projects. The list of might-have-beens includes “The Creed of Violence,” which was set to star Daniel Craig, and “America’s Last Prisoner of War,” an adaptation of a Michael Hastings’ article that he abandoned. At this point Field’s absence from the director’s chair is rivaling the likes of Terrence Malick for longest breaks between pictures.

He has previously been nominated for...

‘Homeland’s Patrick Harbinson To Adapt Kate London’s Met Police Novel ‘Post Mortem’ For ITV
Image
Exclusive: Homeland writer and executive producer Patrick Harbinson is to adapt Kate London’s Metropolitan Police novel Post Mortem into a three-part ITV series, which will be housed at Harbinson’s new UK-based production firm and Mammoth Screen.

The drama will be titled The Tower, in a nod to the novel’s thrilling opening sequence in which a veteran beat cop and teenage girl fall to their deaths from a tower block in south-east London, leaving a five-year-old boy and rookie police officer Lizzie Griffiths on the roof, only for them to go missing.

Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins is drafted in to investigate, working to find Lizzie before she comes to serious harm, but also to uncover the truth behind the grisly tower block deaths. Collins and Griffiths later become the central characters in three books written by former Met officer London.

The Tower will be produced by Harbinson’s...

‘The Serpent’ Producer Mammoth Screen Develops Slave Uprising TV Series Based On Sudhir Hazareesingh’s ‘Black Spartacus’
Image
Exclusive: Mammoth Screen, the British producer behind series including The Serpent and Poldark, is developing a television drama based on the 18th Century slave uprising in Haiti.

The story will be told through the eyes of Toussaint Louverture — who helped turn the tide against slavery internationally through his actions in Haiti — after Mammoth optioned Sudhir Hazareesingh’s biography Black Spartacus: The Epic Life of Toussaint Louverture.

The Baillie Gifford Prize longlisted book is a comprehensive look at the life of Louverture, a former slave, who became the leader of the colony’s black population, the commander of its republican army, and eventually its governor until he was seized by Napoléon Bonaparte’s invading army in 1802.

Hazareesingh describes Louverture as a warrior, philosopher, nation-builder, and founding father of Haiti, characterizing him in the book as the “world’s first black superhero.” Hazareesingh’s biography was hailed as “a tour de force” by The Guardian.

Emmy veterans return to race one more time: Cicely Tyson, Bette Midler, Meryl Streep …
Image
At first glance, the Emmys are giving a lot of love to young performers including Zendaya (“Euphoria”), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Sarah Snook (“Succession”), Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood) and Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”). But looks can be deceiving because there are several Emmy veterans in their 70s, 80s and even 90s nipping at these whippersnappers’ heels in the quest for the gold statute.

Cicely Tyson is the oldest acting Emmy nominee at 95. She’s nominated for the fifth time for guest role in a drama series as Ophelia Harkness on ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” and is also being inducted into the academy Hall of Fame. Tyson, a Tony (“A Trip to Bountiful”) and honorary Oscar-winner, has been nominated for the Emmy 16 times, winning three: for lead in a drama and actress of the year for CBS’ 1974 “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and supporting actress in a miniseries or...

Loyal fans of the massively popular TV series will be delighted: if you enjoyed it week by week or streaming, you’re going to love this ‘one more time’ get-together with the elegant Crawleys and their engaging domestic staff.

Laurence Olivier movies: 15 greatest films, ranked worst to best, include ‘Hamlet,’ ‘Rebecca,’ ‘Marathon Man’
Laurence Olivier
Laurence Olivier would’ve celebrated his 112th birthday on May 22, 2019. The Oscar-winning thespian is best remembered for his psychologically intense Shakespeare adaptations, both as an actor and a director. Yet his filmography extends well past the Bard’s work. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1907 in Surrey, England, Olivier first came to prominence on the British stage. A series of acclaimed theatrical performances, most notably in Noel Coward‘s “Private Lives,” caught the attention of filmmakers both in the UK and the Us.

Lee Child at an event for Jack Reacher: Sin regreso (2016)
Exclusive: Jack Reacher author Lee Child has teamed up with Fremantle-backed producer Dancing Ledge Productions to develop a Black Mirror-meets-Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri true crime anthology drama series.

Child has partnered with Dancing Ledge, which has worked on series including Netflix’s Delhi Crime and HBO co-pro The New Pope, on Lee Child: True Crime, a series that dramatizes the stories of real-life men and women from around the world who have been driven to stand up and put their lives on the line, fighting for justice in the face of great danger.

Laurence Bowen told Deadline that the project originated when he had just seen Martin McDonagh’s Frances McDormand-fronted dark comedy, which itself was inspired by a real-life crime in Texas. He added that they wanted to find real-life Jack Reachers.

Darren Criss is now the 3rd youngest Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor Golden Globe champ
Darren Criss
After becoming the second youngest Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor Emmy winner, Darren Criss is now the third youngest winner in the corresponding Golden Globes category. The 31-year-old won Sunday for his performance in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.”

Like the Emmy category, Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor at the Globes, which was first awarded in 1982, is dominated by older performers. Criss is only bested by James Franco, who was 23 when he won for “James Dean” in 2002, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who was 28 when he prevailed for “Elvis” in 2006. Franco and Rhys Meyers are the category’s only winners who were in their 20s.

Weinstein Company Considers Name Change Following Sex Scandal
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
Just one day after embattled executive Harvey Weinstein was essentially fired from The Weinstein Company, which he helped create with his brother Bob Weinstein, the company's board is seeking to distance themselves from him even further. A new report reveals the company's board of directors is considering a change of the company name, with the studio bringing on two different advertising agencies to develop a new "brand identity." This report also reveals that, as part of the fallout from numerous sexual harassment charges, Harvey Weinstein's name is being removed from all of the upcoming film and TV projects he was involved with before his firing.

This report also reveals that, on early Sunday morning, after worrying that he might be given the axe by the company's board of directors, Harvey Weinstein reportedly sent out numerous emails to, "several powerful Hollywood associates," asking them to plead to his company's board...

The hits just keep coming for Harvey Weinstein who has recently been publicly accused of being a serial sexual harasser and an all-around terrible human being. In the wake of the accusations, many who were close to Weinstein have begun to jump from the sinking ship as public outrage begins to grow and more allegations stack up. The latest accusation comes from the New York Post's Page Six.

The new report details a trip that Harvey Weinstein took to visit the set of Brideshead Revisited, which was filming in the English countryside in 2007. Philip K Dick’s Electric Dreams episode 1 review: The Hood Maker
Louisa Mellor Sep 17, 2017

Three cheers for grown-up sci-fi anthology series Electric Dreams, which promises to be a real treasure trove. Spoilers...

This review contains spoilers.

See related The Croods 2 has been cancelled

1.1 The Hood Maker

A hunched robot in a Pac a Mac creeps behind a pillar. A quintet of babies with floating umbilical cords dance a ring of roses in mid-air. A neon sign advertises the services of a four-breasted woman. Welcome, say the opening credits, to the world of electric dreamer Philip K. Dick.

Or more properly, a world inspired by Philip K. Dick. Episode one of this ten-part anthology series has taken liberties with Dick’s 1955 short story The Hood Maker, and quite rightly. That was written under the shadow of McCarthyism, when loyalty and betrayal were matters of state. This was written under the shadow of the Snooper’s Charter and corporate data mining. In the fifties,...

Years ago, in the pages of Men’s Journal, I confessed to a psychotic obsession with the NFL draft. I dreamed of leaving journalism and being allowed to turn around a wayward team like the Jacksonville Jaguars using ideas like, “Always pick the guy who falls in the draft after a positive weed test.”

But Jaguars owner Shahid Khan never returned my calls. Moreover, I’m beginning to think the NFL won’t exist 20 years from now, because of that minor problem of the sport being physically lethal to its employees.

Emma Thompson
Emma Thompson is a hero to women everywhere.  With more than 30 years as an actress, the two-time Oscar winner has collected many experiences in the strange world of Hollywood. One such example was when she almost quit a film in defense of a co-star.  It was around 2008 and Thompson was working on the set of Brideshead Revisited. As she recalled during an interview on Norwegian-Swedish television program, Skavlan, producers had asked an unnamed actress working on the film to lose weight.  "She was absolutely exquisite and I said to them, 'If you speak to her about this again on any level, I will leave this picture,'" she remembered saying. 2015 Was an Outstanding Year for Co-Productions and Foreign Films Shooting in Poland
2015 was a successful year regarding the quantity and quality of foreign productions shot in Poland. At the beginning of the year, Anne Fontaine (“Coco Before Chanel,” “Perfect Mothers”) filmed a French-Polish co-production “Agnus Dei” in Warmia, which premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The film features Polish and French actresses among others Lou de Laage, Agata Kulesza, Agata Buzek and Joanna Kulig.

In the spring, the crew of a Polish-German-French-Belgian co-production about the life of Maria Sklodowska-Curie (dir. Marie Noelle) spent 20 days on the set in among others Lodz, Leba and Krakow. The cast is international, and the film is made in French. The Polish Nobelist is portrayed by Karolina Gruszka (“Oxygen”).

The summer brought about increased activity of German producers. A Zdf TV show, “Ein Sommer in…” was filmed in two resort towns in the north-eastern Poland – Mikolajki and Mragowo. Ard and Tvp collaborated on the set of "Polizeiruf 110" ("Police Call 110"), which was filmed in July and August among others in a Polish border-town – Swiecko. Also in July began the shooting of a new part of detective TV series "Der Usedom-Krimi" filmed on both the Polish and German side of the Usedom island.

However, a true influx of foreign productions took place in the autumn. American-Polish thriller “Chronology” was filmed in Poznan. The cast includes William Baldwin (TV series "Gossip Girl," "Adrift in Manhattan") and Danny Trejo (“Machete,” “From Dusk till Dawn”).

The Goetz Palace in Brzesk, in Malopolska hosted filmmakers from India who for six days were shooting “Fitoor,” an Indian adaptation of Dickens's “Great Expectations.” The crew consisted of over 40 Indians and almost 80 Poles. Another crew from India – this time from the so-called Kollywood in the south of the country – spent twenty days on the set in various Polish locations (among others Zakopane, Walbrzych, Krakow, Leba). The film titled “24” features Surya, a Tamil superstar, in the main role.

The autumn months were also very intensive in Lodz with three simultaneous big film sets. Andrzej Wajda (“The Promised Land,” “Walesa. Man of Hope”) worked on his new film “Powidoki”; Opus Film, the producer of “Ida”, organized for an Israeli partner eleven-day shoot to a film set in 1970s – “Past Life,” directed by Avi Nesher; and American director Martha Coolidge (“The Prince and Me,” TV shows “Sex and the City,” “The Twilight Zone,” “Weeds”) filmed her project “Music, War and Love,” whose producer is among others Fred Roos known from such films as “Apocalypse Now,” “The Godfather” or “Lost in Translation.” The picture features Adelaide Clemens (“The Great Gatsby”), Connie Nielsen (“Gladiator”), Toby Sebastian (“Game of Thrones”) and Stellan Skarsgård (“Nymphomaniac”).

The end of the year was also very successful for Malopolska and Krakow. Two movies were filmed in the region – an American-British biography of Martin Luther commissioned by PBS with Padraic Delaney (“The Wind that Shakes the Barley,” “The Tudors”) in the main role; and a feature titled “True Crimes” starring two-time winner of a Golden Globe – Jim Carrey (“The Truman Show,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “The Mask”) as the protagonist. The crew spent 32 days on the set in Krakow. The picture was directed by Greek Alexandros Avranas (“Miss Violence”), written by Jeremy Brock (“Brideshead Revisited,” “The Last King of Scotland”), and produced by Brett Ratner (“X-Men 3: the Last Stand,” TV series “Rush Hour”). Accompanying Jim Carrey were Charlotte Gainsbourg (“Nymphomaniac,” “Antichrist”); Marton Csokas (“The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”) and Polish actors Agata Kulesza (“Ida”) and Robert Wieckiewicz (“Walesa. Man of Hope”).

The first information about productions planned for 2016 has already been released. In January, Krakow will host the crew of French black comedy “Grand Froid,” Gérard Pautonnier's debut featuring Jean-Pierre Bacri (“The Taste of Others,” “Let It Rain”), Olivier Gourmet (“Rosetta,” “The Son”) and Arthur Dupond (“Bus Palladium”). The project won the first edition of the Krakow International Film Fund.

Jim Carrey in Crímenes oscuros (2016)
Jim Carrey thriller 'True Crimes' sets Krakow shoot date
Jim Carrey in Crímenes oscuros (2016)
Exclusive: Principal photography on thriller True Crimes, starring Jim Carrey, will begin in Poland’s Krakow on Nov 7.

Speaking to ScreenDaily, the film’s UK screenwriter Jeremy Brock explained that his screenplay was inspired after reading David Grann’s New Yorker article True Crimes - A Post-Modern Murder Mystery, which centres on a Polish murder investigation turning to clues found in a novelist’s book that bear a bizarre resemblance to the case.

Brock, whose screenwriting credits include Mrs Brown, The Last King Of Scotland and Brideshead Revisited, spent a week in Poland in 2008 “just getting my bearings”.

“I spent the intervening time to find my inspiration for what has become an original screenplay,” he recalled, noting that, in his 30 years as a screenwriter from his beginnings as a co-writer of the BBC TV series Casualty in 1985, “I haven’t worked so long and persistently on one project as I have done on this one”.

“Through working...

Nicolas Cage Reteams With 'Leaving Las Vegas' Director Mike Figgis For 'Exit 147'
It's hard to remember a time when Nicolas Cage was a viable, award contending actor, and not just a guy who appeared in movies that serve as a career punchline. But indeed, Cage does have an Oscar on his shelf, and it's thanks to Mike Figgis, who directed him in "Leaving Las Vegas." Now the pair are reuniting for a new movie, and one that was previously attached to Taylor Kitsch and Julian Jarrold (“Great Expectations,” “Brideshead Revisited”). Penned by Travis Milloy ("Pandorum"), "Exit 147" will find Cage playing a cop who gets involved in some mind games with a woman escaping the abusive husband he has arrested. Figgis says this movie will have "edgy humour" and that it's an ensemble piece with a handful of narrative threads. Ben Whishaw Replaces Colin Firth As Voice Of Paddington
This winter’s Paddington has received our attention for all the wrong reasons so far. First, there was that terrifying image of the film’s stuffed bear that sparked the hilarious Creepy Paddington meme. Then, The Weinstein Company released a disappointing first trailer for the movie that made it appear to be a spiritual – albeit less gratingly non-musical – cousin to Alvin and the Chipmunks, of all things. Finally, we learned that Colin Firth, who had previously been set to voice Paddington, had dropped out of the project mid-way through production. Luckily for TWC though, it doesn’t appear that the film will be delayed, as Skyfall actor Ben Whishaw has just been set to lend his voice to the animated bear.

Though the British actor is certainly less of a household name than Firth, Whishaw’s star has been steadily rising over the past few years. He’s won fans...

"He breathes and he speaks and he sounds like Paddington, rather than the most beautiful chocolate-voiced man [Firth] on the planet."

Skyfall and Brideshead Revisited star Whishaw said that he initially had reservations about the project, partly because he...

Transcendence | Review
The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes: Pfister’s Debut Oversteps Limited Reach

Hopes were perhaps set a bit too high for the directorial debut of Wally Pfister, whose work as cinematographer for Christopher Nolan’s three Batman films and a cast headlined by Johnny Depp made Transcendence seem promising, at the very least. But to say that Pfister’s debut is merely disappointing would be a polite euphemism, for it fails on every conceivable level, unsure of whether it wants to be a romantic drama, a hi-tech thriller, or a lesson in the dangers of advancement and dependence on artificial intelligence. Worse, the film’s shockingly lackluster visual artistry can’t even awe or distract us away from the empty headedness transpiring on screen.

Opening with a mournful Max Waters (Paul Bettany), we hear his omniscient narration about a horrible fusion of mankind and technology that seems to have returned the world,...
