Peppermint was one of the psychosis of the Greek middle-to-upper class family of the postwar era. It was a status symbol, and almost every Greek home with a good reputation, had a bottle in its refrigerator. It was the time of the first electric fridges (those monsters built by Kelvinator, me thinks), the first private cars moving in Greece, and some of the coolest dancing songs ever made, like "She Loves You". Friendship, being childish, and teenage love are the themes touched in this film, and the scenario and direction are very affectionate about it.
Having never lived this era (I am a child born in the evil 80s) I cant say that it brings me memories of my childhood, at least not in the way it does to my parents. But it certainly reminds me the treats of being childish from time to time...

"Peppermint" was probably the best Greek film for 1999. It 's the story of a personal voyage, a middle-aged man's voyage back to his age of innocence in the decades of the 50's and the 60's. The story is vibrant and full of emotions both sweet, funny and bitter. The music 's great and the acting outstanding, especially Annie Loulou's award winning performance. Don't miss it !

One beautiful film, something quite opposite to current Hollywood confection. In many moments it reminded me of yet another European masterpiece, Fellini's Amarcord, only this one showing a much more positive historical period, the sixties. The story is intriguing and logical, with many fine details. I must say that I knew almost nothing about Greek cinematography, therefore I was very much pleased with what I saw in this movie. The acting is brilliant (as it is in most European movies), so is the camera-work and other technical aspects. My recommendation to all true film lovers: a must see. Therefore, I give 10/10
To be honest, I bought the DVD of Peppermint just because it was Greek, and it was cheap. Were I to know it was such a fantastic movie, I would have got my hands on it at any cost, and way sooner.
It's such a sweet journey to the childhood and teens of an adult, kneaded with well-timed flashbacks, and an interesting ending. It would be unjust to ignore the beautiful soundtrack too. This movie has one of the best soundtracks ever! The storyline, acting (especially by the kids), photography, music.. It's simply a fascinating movie that everyone must see. Want a coming of age movie? See it! Want a drama? See it! Want romance? See it! Peppermint has a few genres in it, and I really don't see one negative thing about this movie at all!
Greek cinema hasn't been disappointing me for a while. Efharisto gitona, for making such an excellent flick!

When I left Greece, this film had already won the Greek Competition Award during the Thessaloniki Film Festival, but I didn't have the chance to see it. Two years later and in a country so far away from my motherland I had the opportunity to see this wonderful movie in a VCD version with chinese subtitles.
I recommend this movie to everyone, especially to people who lived, as children, in Greece during the post-war era till the end of the 70's. It will definitely remind them a lot of things from their childhood, something that this movie is aiming to do.
