Colin Farrell Says This Movie Changed Everything for His Acting Career
Image
Colin Farrell has often talked about what first drew him to acting, and he credits one movie in particular for inspiring him as a young boy growing up in Dublin.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he recalled seeing Steven Spielberg’s 1982 blockbuster Et the Extra-Terrestrial for the first time.

Farrell said, “I cried and I just loved it. I was taken away completely to another world. It inspired in me all sorts of thoughts, emotions, and it has stayed with me very much. Et really did it for me.”

Spielberg’s film, a story about a young boy who befriends an alien, was inspired by the director’s own imaginary friend from childhood.

Fisher Stevens on Indigenous Doc ‘We Are Guardians’: ‘We Aren’t Going to Get Paid to Do These Social Impact Films, But We Have to Continue to Make Them’
Image
In 2019, Edivan Guajajara, Chelsea Greene, and Rob Grobman began filming “We Are Guardians,” a documentary about Indigenous forest guardians fighting to protect their ancestral lands from relentless invasions and deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest.

The directors followed various forest guardians of Brazil as they fought to protect the Amazon rainforest from destruction.

“Through the smoke and confusion of the media coming from Brazil and the international community, we decided to mobilize and uncover the truth,” Greene and Grobman said in a joint statement.”We wanted to hear from those closest to the forest, and the fires, what was happening, from their perspective.”

After a year, Guajajara, Greene, and Grobman showed producers Zak Kilberg, Maura Anderson, and Fisher Stevens a reel of what they had captured in the Amazon. The producers, who at the time were forming their production company Highly Flammable, were immediately intrigued and decided to make “We Are Guardians...

Farrell has had the good fortune to work with many of the best directors out there, including Terence Malick and Steven Spielberg. Two writers/directors in particular have been instrumental in pushing Farrell to new artistic ground. 3 Years After Batman & Robin, Joel Schumacher Helmed This Highly Underrated Vietnam War Film
Image
Quick Links Joel Schumaker Had a Hard Time Moving Past Batman & Robin What is the Story of Tigerland? Tigerland Was One Of Joel Schumacher's Most Acclaimed Films

The late Joel Schumacher directed many iconic films throughout his career, from The Lost Boys to A Time to Kill. It's almost impossible, however, to hear the director's name and talk about him without making his involvement with DC part of the conversation. Despite the acclaim he received for his direction in thrillers and dramas, his brief time in the comic book/superhero genre wasn't quite met the same way. Batman Forever opened to mixed reviews in 1995, but it was 1997's Batman & Robin that received the biggest amount of backlash. Although his two Batman movies have come to be seen in a better light than how they were initially upon their release, the negative impact that they had on his career is undeniable.

Best Vietnam War Movies Since 2000, Ranked
Image
The Vietnam War was a notoriously long event that was felt worldwide. Between 1955 and 1975, the central conflict of North and South Vietnam fighting each other captivated the world and resulted in several other nations, including the United States, sending in troops. Full of controversy and casualties, the Vietnam War left a serious mark on world history. With a war this consequential, it is no wonder that audiences have received many films about the event. Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, and Good Morning, Vietnam are just a few movies that came out years after the war's conclusion.

Films about the Vietnam War were primarily released in the 1970s and 1980s, yet the 21st century has still found some room for more stories to tell. For example, the new HBO series The Sympathizer has been hooking viewers with its exploration of the Vietnam War at its near end. Along with following soldiers in combat,...

Colin Farrell's TV Year Kicks Off With The Trailer For Sugar, His Apple TV+ Noir Drama
Image
Since he made his Hollywood debut in the 2000 Vietnam War drama "Tigerland," Colin Farrell's career has had some downs and some ups. All in all, though, he's largely outgrown his 2000s playboy reputation and is deservedly recognized as one of the best movie stars we've got. Farrell's got the eloquent soul of an artist, the way only an Irishman does.

After Farrell's earlier and fruitless efforts to be an action hero, he's learned to not let his occasional franchise gigs distract him from more personal work. Not all his work is on film either. In 2024, he'll be returning to television with two crime drama roles.

He plays Oz Cobblepot in the Max series "Penguin," spinning out of his supporting role in 2022's "The Batman." Before he returns onscreen as the Penguin, though, he's going to star in (and executive produce) "Sugar" for competing streaming service Apple TV+.

Hulu New Releases: November 2023
Image
Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Also dropping on Hulu this month is the original film Quiz Lady, starring Sandra Oh, Awkwafina, Jason Schwartzman,...

The Best Sex Scenes of the 21st Century: ‘Beau Is Afraid,’ ‘Call Me By Your Name,’ and More
Image
What makes a sex scene sexy? More to the point, what makes a sex scene good? That’s become an especially thorny question in recent years, with detailed accounts of what goes on behind the scenes of movies we love complicating our relationship with their most memorable moments. And though we’re ever so slowly moving away from the male gaze serving as the default perspective on love, sex, and everything between, there’s still a long way to go.

That is, if sex scenes still appear in movies at all. They do, but with greater infrequency, certainly in Hollywood studio productions. Though many think-pieces have been written about “the death of the sex scene” there’s still been a lot to celebrate over the last 23 years. A number of sex-positive, LGBTQ-friendly, and otherwise forward-thinking filmmakers have directed scenes that are as steamy as they are moving. There’s nothing...

10 Great Directors With Terrible First Movies
Image
Even some great directors have terrible debut movies, as proven by a look back at the less impressive films of a few illustrious filmmakers. Everyone has to start somewhere. Even future Hollywood superstar Sylvester Stallone began his career with a role in the adult movie The Party at Kitty and Stud’s. At the same time, directors can often have an even more challenging time breaking into the industry. Wes Craven and Sean S. Cunningham, who eventually helped invent the slasher sub-genre with A Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday the 13th, first met while working together on an adult movie.

However, while these inauspicious debuts might have been less than family-friendly, they weren’t necessarily bad movies. The same cannot be said for the first onscreen efforts of many great directors. While some filmmakers started strong, plenty of great directors have made terrible debut movies. Like movie actors who starred in forgotten TV shows,...

Alexander Taught Colin Farrell A Lesson In Expectations
Image
On paper, "Alexander" looked like a surefire hit. Colin Farrell, who starred as the titular world-conqueror in the 2004 film, certainly thought so. And who could blame him? Helmed by an acclaimed director in Oliver Stone and featuring a stacked cast that included Sir Anthony Hopkins, Angelina Jolie, Rosario Dawson, Val Kilmer, Jared Leto, and Christopher Plummer, it seemed like the perfect vehicle to catapult the young Irish actor to superstardom. The film also featured a very robust budget of 155 million, and every bit was needed to capture the scale and scope of Alexander the Great's life.

And then, the terrible reviews started to come in. The box office receipts didn't. Stone's epic biopic managed a measly 34 million domestic, and barely scraped past its budget worldwide with 167 million, all told. A mere four years after his breakout role in "Tigerland," Farrell started to question his own talent and the future...

Colin Farrell Tried To Talk His Way Out Of Martin McDonagh's In Bruges
Image
Colin Farrell has the Brad Pitt curse; he has the talent of a character actor but he's too hot to be anything but a leading man. As such, Hollywood didn't quite know what to do with him during his breakout in the 2000s.

I'd point to two directors who best understand how to use Farrell. First, there's the man who discovered him: Joel Schumacher. In their second collaboration, "Phone Booth," Farrell played Stu Shepard, a sleazy PR operative who has to confront his sins. Some early proof he was more than just a pretty boy.

Then there's Martin McDonagh, director of "In Bruges" which is, for my money, still Farrell's best movie. When I watched Farrell play Ray, a fledgling hitman hiding out in Belgium after a job gone wrong, I realized what a great, and hilarious, actor he can be. The resulting story is the funniest movie ever made...

No Actor Had a Better Year Than Colin Farrell
Image
Since beginning his career in the late 1990s, Irish actor Colin Farrell has been on a proverbial rollercoaster. Following a handful of early film and TV appearances, Farrell first gained the attention of Hollywood when he starred in Joel Schumacher’s 2000 war drama Tigerland. And his breakout role came in 2002 when he played Agent Danny Witwer in Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report. His excellent work, good looks, and onscreen charisma quickly positioned Farrell as a potentially huge leading man. But a string of moderate successes, outright failures, and mixed critical responses with films like Phone Booth, Daredevil, S.W.A.T., Miami Vice, and the universally derided Alexander cooled the actor’s jets for a while, while Farrell also rode out some personal relationship drama and a trip to rehab.

He came out the other end of that phase with more managed expectations, transitioning from standard leading man fare to more wide-ranging character...

Joel Schumacher Thought He Probably Should've Been Fired From Directing The Lost Boys
Image
Joel Schumacher was an immensely talented filmmaker whose slick visual style earned him loads of high-profile assignments during the 1980s and '90s. He could deliver the sensuous perfume commercial aesthetic of A-listers like Alan Parker, Ridley Scott, and Adrian Lyne sans the auteurist demand for total creative control. He possessed the crowd-pleasing instincts of Tony Scott. He worked with the biggest movie stars of the day: Julia Roberts, Michael Douglas, Jim Carrey, Matthew McConaughey, and Mr. T. He discovered Colin Farrell with 2000's "Tigerland." He both saved and killed the "Batman" franchise.

That Schumacher had any kind of career is something of a miracle. He survived a wild youth that included a near-fatal meth addiction, and by his own admission, thousands of sexual partners as the 1980s AIDS epidemic took hold. This experience gave him valuable insight as he landed major studio assignments packed with volatile young talent. On "St. Elmo's Fire,...

‘In Bruges’ duo Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson reunited in ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’
Image
When Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson played hit men in the 2008 black comedy “In Bruges,” it was an inspired pairing, letting both actors shine in ways they hadn’t before. Farrell’s good looks had won him the lead in “Tigerland” over 20 years ago, but directors shied away from exploring his talents as a character actor. Gleeson had won an Emmy for playing Winston Churchill in an HBO movie, “Into the Storm,” and was nominated as Best Actor by the New York Film Critics Circle in 1998 for playing Irish folk hero Martin Cahill in “The General,” but the big buzzy movie part eluded him. Together “In Bruges,” they were hilarious and the Hollywood Foreign Press nominated both Farrell and Gleeson for Golden Globe awards in 2009; Farrell won as Best Actor in a Comedy.

Nearly 15 years later, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are reunited in sublime form in Martin McDonagh’s...

Colin Farrell (‘Banshees of Inisherin’) finally on his way to his first Oscar nom? Here’s what the odds say
Image
Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) could finally be on his way to his first Oscar nomination more than two decades after his 2000 international breakthrough in the film “Tigerland.” He currently ranks third for Best Actor according to the predictions of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets thus far. Do you agree that his wait is finally over?

Farrell stars in “Banshees” as Padraic, who is shocked when Colm (Brendan Gleeson) abruptly ends their years-long friendship. ‘The Inspection’ Review: Ex-Marine Elegance Bratton Gives Military Realness in Autobiographical Debut
Image
“If we got rid of every gay man in the military, there would be no military,” a sympathetic officer tells Marine recruit Ellis French in “The Inspection.” That’s an exceptionally open-minded take on the United States’ “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, seeing as how pretty much everyone else French encounters at boot camp is openly hostile to there being a gay man among them. But writer-director Elegance Bratton made it through the system — like the character, he’d been lost and homeless for a decade before enlisting — and this deeply personal narrative debut is one gay Black man’s way of showing how he not only survived the experience, but was strengthened by it. “The few, the proud,” as they say.

To play himself — er, French — Bratton tapped Emmy nominee Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood”), soon to be seen as Basquiat on Broadway in “The Collaboration.” Pope gives a...

Batman Vs. Superman, The Old Man And The Gun, And More Projects Wolfgang Petersen Almost Directed
Image
When Wolfgang Petersen burst onto the scene with his WWII submarine masterpiece "Das Boot," Hollywood came calling. Any director who could pin audiences to their seats for two-and-a-half hours with a film that rarely leaves the interior of a U-boat surely had the skills to enthrall viewers with a mainstream blockbuster. While Petersen proved more than reliable with smashes like "In the Line of Fire," "Outbreak," "Air Force One," and "The Perfect Storm," he occasionally found himself attached to ambitious projects that, for one reason or another, failed to launch or launched without him at the helm.

Petersen, who died on August 12, 2022, at the age of 81, left behind a litany of what-ifs. He was in the mix on several tantalizing projects that could've changed the complexion of superhero and YA filmmaking; there's an alternate universe in which Petersen revived the DC universe with a Batman and Superman mash-up in the early 2000s.

Why Casting Kiefer Sutherland in ‘The First Lady’ Marked an “Emotional Moment” for the Show’s Creator
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Much of the ink printed about Showtime’s prestige series The First Lady has (deservingly) been in reference to its female creative team, whether it be stars Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson, director Susanne Bier or producer Cathy Schulman. But there’s a good story to be told about two men on The First Lady, specifically creator Aaron Cooley and co-star Kiefer Sutherland.

Cooley cut his teeth in entertainment by starting out as an assistant to filmmaker Joel Schumacher in 2002. By that point, the in-demand auteur had already churned out a long list of high-profile Hollywood films including St. Elmo’s Fire, The Lost Boys, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, A Time to Kill, Flawless and Tigerland, to name a few. But there’s one more feature that’s worthy of mention because it left quite an impression.

“I remember sneaking into...

Streaming Spotlight - Tiger feats by Amber Wilkinson
A new predator is on the hunt
Shere Khan in The Jungle Book Photo: Disney It was International Tiger Day yesterday, so we're earning our stripes this week with a Streaming Spotlight dedicated to these Asian big cats. The animals are still under global threat, with their numbers dropping by more than 95 per cent since the beginning of the 20th Century according to the WWF, although they are now, thankfully on the rise again - and if you're looking for a film charting conservation efforts, Tigerland is well worth watching, although sadly not currently available to stream. You can read more about International Tiger Day on the WWF website.

The Jungle Book, Disney+

Surely the Goat of cinematic tigers, Shere Khan first prowled his way into the hearts of a generation of children with the 1967 Disney animation - and he was given a whole new lease of silky menace by Idris Elba in this live-action remake. "Live...

Matthew McConaughey Credits Joel Schumacher for Kick-Starting His Movie Career
Image
Matthew McConaughey has paid tribute to the late Joel Schumacher. The actor starred in 1996's A Time to Kill, which was directed by Schumacher, and served as McConaghey's big break in many ways. While he had starred in movies before that, the courtroom drama represented his shot at a leading role. McConaughey says he owes his career to Schumacher.

Following a year-long battler with cancer, Joel Schumacher passed away at the age of 80 recently. In an interview following the filmmaker's passing, Matthew McConaughey discussed how Schumacher put up a fight to get him the leading role in A Time to Kill. Here's what McConaughey had to say.

"Joel not only took a chance on me, he fought for me. Knowing the studio might never approve a relatively unknown like myself for the lead in 'A Time to Kill,' he set up a secret screen test for me on...

Jim Carrey Pays Tribute To Batman Forever Director Joel Schumacher
Image
When most people hear the name Joel Schumacher, their mind instantly turns to the near-irreparable damage he did to the Batman franchise, taking the Gothic aesthetic established by Tim Burton and turning it into a neon and nipples extravaganza designed to sell as many toys as possible and banishing the Dark Knight to cinematic purgatory for close to a decade.

However, The Lost Boys director’s legacy stretches much further and wider than simply making two Batman movies, and his filmography is about as diverse and varied as you’d expect from anyone that spent over 40 years in the business. Two of his first credits were for writing Car Wash and Michael Jackson musical The Wiz, both of which went on to become firm cult classics.

Schumacher was also responsible for two of Hollywood’s finest John Grisham adaptations in The Client and A Time to Kill, directed the best...

Joel Schumacher (1939-2020)
Image
by Nathaniel R

Joel Schumacher and the star he made, Colin FarrellI once walked across the street in the East Village with Joel Schumacher. I didn't say anything though I immediately recognized him; as directors go he was hard to miss -- very tall with long silver hair. Anything I might have wanted to say would surely have been too belabored in a street crossing. "I love your work," is rote and in this case untrue though I loved some of his work enthusiastically in a formative (St Elmo's Fire) or camp (Batman & Robin) or moment-in-time.

Sometimes I loved his work in all of those ways at once -- Love you, Lost Boys!

It's been curious to see so much appreciation spring up on the internet today, particularly because Schumacher was never a director to inspire reverence in the masses though he made several popular pictures...

Joel Schumacher at an event for Camino de guerra (2000)
Director of cult classic ‘The Lost Boys’ and Batman films Joel Schumacher dies
Joel Schumacher at an event for Camino de guerra (2000)
Veteran and beloved filmmaker Joel Schumacher has died at the age of 80 after a year-long battle with cancer.

Having started out his career as a costume designer, Schumacher soon saw his love of film take him in a new direction landing up in the director’s chair. He rose to fame after directing three hit films that wrapped up the 80s’ in a nutshell with 1985s’ ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ which starred Brat packers, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez alongside Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham. It centres on a clique of recent graduates of Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown University, and their adjustment to post-university life and the responsibilities of adulthood.

The Vampire classic ‘The Lost Boys’ followed in 1987, it starred Corey Haim, Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz, Corey Feldman, Dianne Wiest, Edward Herrmann, Alex Winter, Jamison Newlander, and Barnard Hughes. The film was a critical and commercial success,...
