FROM THE EARLY DAYS OF IMPORTED ANIME

Unlike most of the anime that made its way to the states back in the 1960's, I never saw this one as a kid. I first saw it via a terrible quality VHS tape obtained at a convention in the 1990's and finally saw decent prints of it recently since a couple of episodes are included on the Something Weird Video STARMAN discs. Basically the adventures of a benevolent teen alien hero who has come to Earth to pretty much save us from ourselves, this series has a real charm which is sorely lacking in most cartoons produced nowadays. However, I have found that most of the old anime shows that we used to watch back in the days are simply too primitive to hold the interest of most contemporary children. Oh well, it's fun stuff, and now you know where to find a couple of episodes.

    Anyone remember this show?

I used to watch this show on channel 44 in Chicago, first at noon right after Kimba in '72, and then around 4pm. I loved this show and would really like to have it on video. If someone knows of a source, please post it.

Prince Planet - Domo Arigato to the producers and animators

As a boy growing up in Melbourne, Australia in the 60's / 70's, probably the best shows on TV I remember were Prince Planet, Astro boy and Marine Boy. Nothing comes even close to it these days ( except for the digitised Starship Troopers chronicles. When I was in Japan in '97, I came across a T-shirt store in Tokyo that had a picture of Prince Planet on its T-shirts. I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy a half dozen or so to bring back to good old Oz. Japanese animation has always facinated me. Prince Planet was one of the best in those early days. The theme song is still in my mind, as well as the lyrics. One of the local video stores here has some early Japanese animation. Prince Planet and Astro Boy are part of their collection. The good old days....................

    Prince Planet Rules

Can anybody remember the way that Prince Planet's medallion would be so low on energy and that his ultimate destruction by his enemies was always narrowly avoided be the professor in some laboratory managing to re-energise his medallion and thus saving the day. I can also vaguely remember lightening, laser type bolts coming from the medallion. I'm not really sure if his opponents were killed or temporarily paralyzed. Could somebody please help me with this?

    I thought I was alone....

I remember Prince Planet on TV in Chicago in the mid-70s. My best friends and I were all in love with the main character. I have never met another person who remembers this show, so I'm glad to have found this information! I'd started thinking I was losing it!! :) I used to watch this along with Battle of the Planets and Speed Racer. I wish they would make some comebacks on Boomerang! these were great shows with good characters and usually some morally uplifting message. The Banana Splits were on around the same time, and those have started showing up on cable - Boomerang. I love to see those now and sort of relive the halcyon days of my childhood!

    • Trivia
One of many (and one of the first) Japanese anime television series that became popular beginning in the 1960's. Anime, based on the Japanese-style of manga comic books and novels, had a characteristic animation style that usually featured round faces, overly large eyes, choppy animation (apparently due to lower frame rates than 24 or 29.96 fps which is typical for historically smooth animation), inaccurate visual speech patterns, and unusual facial expressions that accompanied short vocal outbursts of surprise or anger. Anime, because it was Japanese dubbed into English, did not have well synchronized audio-video in its speech, similar to the soon to come at the time big martial arts movies featuring greats such as Bruce Lee. Other anime series from this time-frame that also share most if not all of the above animation traits include Astroboy, Speed Racer, and Kimba the White Lion, among others. Many of those same animation styles can also be found in Japanese-based video games including the Final Fantasy series of video games.
