"The Roses is a cautionary tale about romance." Searchlight Pictures has debuted a new promo featurette for The Roses, an upcoming comedy from filmmaker Jay Roach. "All's fair when love is war." Life seems easy for this couple, however that's all about to change. A tinderbox of competition and resentments hidden underneath the façade of a picture-perfect couple is ignited when the husband's professional dreams come crashing down and his (ex-)wife's career as a chef takes off. An updated, modern take on the book "The War of the Roses" written by Warren Adler, which was already made before into 1989 comedy of the same name. The first trailer arrived a few months ago already - it's still set to open in September this fall. The Roses cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, with Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, and Kate McKinnon.

While promoting his new film, Benedict Cumberbatch put in perspective how non-environmentally friendly Hollywood productions tend to be, as he appeared on the Ruthie’s Table 4 podcast. Cumberbatch inevitably fielded questions about being in the Marvel Universe and when he spoke about getting into shape for Doctor Strange, he mentioned how he had to eat five meals a day, plus snacks like boiled eggs, almonds and cheese in between meals in order to bulk up. Cumberbatch admitted how “it’s horrific eating beyond your appetite.”
Reminiscing about his meals got him thinking about how he found Hollywood productions less green. According to Variety, the Sherlock star said, “Going back to responsibility and resourcefulness and sustainability, it’s just like, ‘What am I doing? I could feed a family with the amount I’m eating.’” He would then continue to say,

Benedict Cumberbatch called Hollywood a “grossly wasteful industry” during an interview on “Ruthie’s Table 4” podcast. The Oscar nominee is no stranger to massive studio productions given his role as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Cumberbatch loves undergoing a “body transformation” for his work, he also says “it’s horrific eating beyond your appetite.”
“Going back to responsibility and resourcefulness and sustainability, it’s just like, ‘What am I doing? Gordon Gekko has (mostly) left the building. Michael Douglas made headlines over the weekend when he announced the he would be stepping back from acting during an appearance at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic.
"I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop," said the veteran actor and producer, who last appeared onscreen in 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. "I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I have no real intentions of going back."
At the same time, Douglas acknowledged that — just like Sean Connery — he's going to be careful about never saying never again. "I say I’m not retired because if something special came up, I’d go back, but otherwise, no."

Hollywood icon Michael Douglas has seemingly capped off his legendary career. Two years after the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Douglas said he has purposefully stayed away from acting work since filming his role in the movie in 2022. The 80-year-old noted that he has no desire to ever return, unless it was for something incredibly special that he wouldn't be able to refuse.
Per Variety, Douglas was at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival to present a newly restored print of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. In addition to addressing his career, the actor commented on his future. Douglas spoke about the current state of his health struggles. He was previously diagnosed with throat cancer in 2010, but his cancer has since gone into remission after treatment.
"Stage 4 cancer is not a holiday, but there aren’t many choices, are there?,” Douglas explained. “I went with the program, involving chemo and radiation,...

As humans, there are a lot of ways we try to cope after someone ends a relationship with us. Some of us eat entire pints of ice cream, while others spend their time at the gym or trying on new clothes. Some of us simply listen to Taylor Swift's entire discography on repeat. However, few things can take you out of those repetitive patterns of heartbreak like a good, relatable film about love lost or taken away.
From serious, Oscar-bait dramas to laugh-out-loud-funny rom-coms, plenty of films perfectly capture the universal experience of going through a break-up, whether you're an adult struggling with a family-splitting divorce or a teenager experiencing your first crushing heartbreak. These 15 films might have happy endings, bittersweet endings, or just plain sad endings, but they might in some way offer comfort for those who are currently going through the summer without another person by their side.

We've already seen some of the most anticipated movies of 2025, such as "Thunderbolts*" and "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning," as well as unexpected blockbusters like "Sinners" and "Mickey 17." There's still a lot more great films to come as of this writing, some of which feature the theatrical returns of auteur directors like Spike Lee and Paul Thomas Anderson. Jason Momoa might seem like a wrestler, but he isn't. The problem is he has the size of Dewayne Johnson and John Cena, and might seem like one of the actors of that ilk, but he is much more experienced as an actor than those former wrestlers could ever be.
Still, it's easy to only see Momoa as an action star and nothing else. He is capable of drama, but lately has been full-bore into comedy. He's good at it. Opposite Jack Black in Minecraft, Momoa is the kind of goof that is needed for the role.
Andy Samberg has always been the goof we needed in most of his comedic roles, but the trick is, like Adam Sandler, he is smarter than he might seem. That translates on the screen even when we laugh at the silly things he might do.

Some things just make sense together: peanut butter and jelly, cheese and crackers, Jason Momoa and Andy Samberg. That last one is, of course, a new addition to the snack cabinet, as the actors have recently sold their two-hander action comedy film to Netflix. In what was a reportedly "highly competitive" situation, the A Minecraft Movie and Brooklyn Nine-Nine stars are slated to star in an as-yet-untitled film, bringing together two very different, but complementary, flavors of comedic timing.
In a report exclusively reported by Deadline, we were only given a scant few details about a film that already feels rife with potential given the players involved. Though there is no director attached, the film will be written by Saturday Night Live alums Rob Klein and John Solomon. While the Max rebrand back to HBO Max has the streaming world in a tizzy, it’s worth remembering the significance of keeping diverse subscriptions. While “Hacks” and “The Last of Us” wrap up over on that side of your library, the Hulu and Disney bundle is essential for maximizing this summer’s offerings.
Disney+ continues to be the go-to streamer for family friendly viewing options; this month, they’ll add the official “Frozen” Broadway musical to that library, along with Marvel’s “Ironheart,” about Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) who was introduced in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Hulu has everything you need for an “Alien” movie marathon, all to gear up for FX’s “Alien: Earth” which premieres in August. You could also do a “Mamma Mia!” marathon or “Bachelor” binge — we’re not here to judge.
Top Pick: “The Bear” Season 4 (Available on Hulu)

Upcoming comedy The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as a warring couple, arrives in August. Have a trailer:
On paper, everything about Searchlight’s upcoming remake of the 1989 dark comedy, The War Of The Roses looks to be in order. You get Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as the unhappy couple, delivering withering put-downs in a steadily escalating conflict that gets rather out of hand.
Plus, it has Jay Roach at the helm, a filmmaker who knows how to craft a big studio comedy, not to mention a script from Poor Things and The Favourite writer Tony McNamara. This doesn’t look like it will have the frisson of the Danny DeVito film that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, though. The original War Of The Roses was a continuation of the chemistry the duo perfected in 1984’s Romancing The Stone and the following year’s sequel, The Jewel Of The Nile.

Benedict Cumberbatch is an actor known for playing all kinds of roles – geniuses (Sherlock), dragons (The Hobbit trilogy), time-bending doctors (Doctor Strange) and numerous dramatic leading roles. The one thing we don’t get to see him fully lean into very often? Comedy. That’s about to change with The Roses, in which he stars opposite Olivia Colman as a married couple having some pretty extreme relationship troubles. Watch the trailer below.
Cumberbatch and Colman are Theo and Ivy Rose, spouses living a seemingly perfect life with their kids in a beautiful house by the beach. But under the surface, jealousy and resentment starts bubbling up, with Theo’s career takes a downward turn just as Ivy’s is taking off. Cue a series of escalating jabs and retaliations at each other as they start to face their marital problems – including awkward exchanges over dinner, crabs in a bathtub, and gunshots in the kitchen.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman play a picture-perfect married couple who descend into a bitter cat-and-dog divorce battle in the trailer for The Roses, director Jay Roach’s dark comedy.
Cumberbatch is Theo, whose career nosedives while Ivy (Colman) sees her ambitions take off just as their increasingly competitive and resentful marriage leads to a bracingly nasty divorce battle to divide up what they own.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman have a not-so-cordial split in the first trailer for The Roses, the forthcoming remake of The War of the Roses.

In the early 1990s, Sean Connery and Cher almost appeared together in a romantic adventure called Road Show. Here’s why it never got made:

The Roses is a remake of War Of The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s arriving this very summer.
While we often roll our eyes at Hollywood’s lack of originality and continued reliance on remakes, we’re looking forward to Fox Searchlight’s upcoming remake of the 1989 dark comedy, The War Of The Roses.
It has Jay Roach at the helm, a filmmaker who knows how to craft a big studio comedy, not to mention a script from Poor Things and The Favourite writer Tony McNamara, who imbued both of those films humour that ranged from slapstick to biting to outright shocking.
Also, this is an anglicised take on the Danny DeVito film that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in a continuation of the love-hate onscreen pairing the duo perfected in 1984’s Romancing The Stone and its sequel, 1985’s The Jewel Of The Nile.

Searchlight Pictures has slated Jay Roach’s new comedy The Roses for an August 29th release. Based on the novel by Warren Adler, the film boasts an all-star cast which includes Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman.
The official synopsis for The Roses reads: “Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.” The film also stars Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, Belinda Bromilow, and Kate McKinnon. That is a strange release date even for a commercial contender starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch.
