From ‘Wednesday’ to ‘Weapons,’ a Season of the Witch for the Trump Age
Image
Vampires and zombies took a big bite out of the horror box office in Sinners and 28 Years Later, and with Del Toro’s Frankenstein hitting theaters next week, it would seem that a return to classic marquee monsters is one of the stories of this summer’s movie season. But there’s one old-school hobgoblin that’s lurking around the edges of this narrative, omnipresent, repeated across a number of notable new titles, but still somehow avoiding the limelight: the witch. In one week alone this month, Wednesday returned to Netflix for a second season, Zach Cregger’s Weapons shocked audiences with a scene-stealing sorceress, and Chuck Russell’s remake of Witchboard swapped out the original’s malefic warlock for a new, far more dangerous witch. The Philippous’ Bring Her Back also hinged on a shadowy occult group, whose dark reincarnation spells drive a grieving mother to witchcraft and child abuse.

Michelle Pfeiffer and Maxwell Caulfield in Vaselina 2 (1982)
Grease 2: The Cult Classic That Made Michelle Pfeiffer A Star
Michelle Pfeiffer and Maxwell Caulfield in Vaselina 2 (1982)
Image Source: Paramount Pictures The Sequel Nobody Asked For (But We Got Anyway)

Be honest: did you secretly watch Grease 2 a million times as a kid? Sure, critics panned it when it hit theaters in 1982, but decades later it’s still finding new fans. Maybe it’s the gloriously cheesy songs, the neonsoaked 80s vibe, or Michelle Pfeiffer radiating star power before she became, well, Michelle Pfeiffer. Whatever the reason, Grease 2 carved out a permanent spot as a cult favorite.

Why Grease 2 Exists (And Still Matters)

The original Grease was a phenomenon — a smash hit no one saw coming. So, of course, Paramount wanted lightning to strike twice.

‘The Ruse’ – ‘Malevolence’ & ‘Bereavement’ Director Stevan Mena Returns With New Horror Movie [Trailer]
Image
Director Stevan Mena came onto the horror scene back in 2003 with the indie slasher Malevolence, which ended up launching a trilogy that grew to include Bereavement (starring Alexandra Daddario!) and Malevolence 3: Killer. Seven years after the trilogy wrapped up, we’ve learned that Mena is back this summer with a brand new horror movie titled The Ruse.

Mena Films has announced that The Ruse will be available for rental and purchase on VOD beginning Tuesday, August 14. The film originally debuted in theaters on Friday, May 16.

Starring Veronica Cartwright, Madelyn Dundon (Getting Grace), and Michael Steger, the film promises a “chilling whodunnit that keeps audiences on edge until the final frame.” Watch the trailer for The Ruse below.

The story follows Dale (Dundon), a home health care worker sent to a remote seaside home after her predecessor mysteriously vanishes. Upon arrival, Dale finds herself caught in a web of chaos—faced with an uncooperative patient,...

How Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome Inspired George Miller To Make Babe
Image
George Miller has one of the most brilliantly bonkers filmographies in the ‘biz. Yes, this is the guy who gave us five Mad Max movies, including unhinged all-timer Fury Road, and who unleashed lust-fuelled devilry in The Witches Of Eastwick. And yet, nestled in his filmography you’ll find much more wholesome fare – notably, the Happy Feet movies (animated dancing penguins!), and beloved piggie favourite Babe, and its sequel Pig In The City. They might seem poles apart – but it was his time on Mad Max threequel Beyond Thunderdome that first got pigs percolating in Miller’s mind.

That 1985 film was something of a porcine affair itself, with its facility that turned pig shit into fuel. “I’d eat lunch with pigs all around me,” Miller chuckles, talking to Empire for Babe’s 30 anniversary. “I came to learn how sensitive they are.” Then, with farmyard animals already on the brain,...

Cher’s $103M Film Deserved Better Than Losing Two Oscars to a Historical Snoozefest
Image
The Witch of Eastwick was a box-office success that received a pretty lukewarm reaction from critics. However, the film’s Oscar loss to The Last Emperor was nothing short of being a sham. The Witch of Eastwick had a pretty fresh premise and actually managed to make its budget back and then some.

However, the film ended up losing to Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, which chronicled the life of the last emperor of China, Puyi. While The Witch of Eastwick was nominated for Best Original Score and Best Sound, both these awards would end up going to Bertolucci’s film instead.

The Witches of Eastwick had fewer nominations than The Last Emperor The Witches of Eastview || Credit: Warner Bros.

The Witches of Eastwick was a film that was made on a minuscule budget of $22 million, starring the likes of Jack Nicholson, Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Susan Sarandon. These...

Veronica Cartwright Talks Shooting 'The Birds' With Alfred Hitchcock
Image
Hollywood star Veronica Cartwright has one of those faces instantly associated with horror: Lambert in Alien, Nancy in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Felicia in The Witches of Eastwick. All standout roles that showed Cartwright's horror range and consolidated her status as an underrated icon of the genre. But perhaps her most significant early horror film role is the one many don't immediately remember. When she was just a child, Cartwright starred in a groundbreaking scary film directed by visionary Alfred Hitchcock. That film is the "nature strikes back" horror movieThe Birds.

Cartwright is currently promoting her most recent movie, an interesting return to the genre titled The Ruse. Per the report by IndieWire, Cartwright plays a "dementia-afflicted musician whose home contains myriad mysteries for the young nurse who has taken a job as her caregiver." At 76, Cartwright proves she hasn't lost her touch. It couldn't be any other way,...

Road Show | The unlikely Sean Connery and Cher team-up that never happened
Image
In the early 1990s, Sean Connery and Cher almost appeared together in a romantic adventure called Road Show. Here’s why it never got made:

The ending of this story is that the movie never happened. Sean Connery and Cher never came together in a feature film from the director of Die Hard, and if you follow their respective IMDb pages, you’ll know their streams never crossed.

But for time in the early 1990s, it nearly happened. The project that nearly brought them together sounds as unlikely now as the cast list.

For over a decade, a script called Road Show was doing the rounds among Hollywood studios. A romantic action-adventure set in and around a ranch, it was in turn based on a book called The Last Cattle Drive, penned by Robert Day, and it moved onto the docket of director John McTiernan just after he’d enjoyed...

'The Ruse' Sets Release Date with Iconic Horror Star Veronica Cartwright
Image
One of the greatest but perhaps unsung names in the history of genre cinema is Veronica Cartwright, a legend of sci-fi and horror going back to The Twilight Zone and The Birds (1963). She really gained attention in the late '70s after the one-two punch of Philip Kaufman's Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), where she played Lambert. Now she's back to the genre we love her in, starring opposite Madelyn Dundon (Getting Grace), Michael Steger in The Ruse. Check out more information below.

Jack Nicholson Was at His Most Devilishly Charismatic in This Deliciously Camp ‘80s Comedy
Image
Jack Nicholson is regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time, and not just for the sheer number of classics on his resume, but for the range that he has displayed within his performances. It’s truly remarkable that the same actor who played a grim detective in Chinatown and a disturbed mental patient in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nestcould also play a charismatic astronaut in Terms of Endearment and the original Joker in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman. Nicholson has often been drawn to working with filmmakers who have strong visions, so it is no surprise that he was interested in working with the great George Millerafter his work on the Mad Max trilogy was hailed as a titanic achievement in action filmmaking. Nicholson got to be both a scene-stealing villain and a sly womanizer in The Witches of Eastwick, a bizarre dark fantasy comedy that...

Jack Nicholson Made Surprise Appeared in the 'SNL50' Anniversary Special
Image
The stars really did come out for the 50th anniversary special for Saturday Night Live. Introducing Adam Sandler, who performed an incredible SNL50 tribute song, was none other than the legendary Jack Nicholson.

When the camera cut to Nicholson, the applause rained down. The actor kept it simple, saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, Adam Sandler!" From there, Sandler gave a shout-out to Jack and began his song, singing, "Everyone in this room has something in common. All of our lives were changed by the show."

Sandler is known for his songs and mashups, and this one was perfect for the occasion. He sang about the cast, funny moments (including those behind the scenes), the crew, Lorne Michaels, and paid a very heartfelt tribute to fellow SNL vet and friend, the late Chris Farley, who passed away in 1997, and Norm Macdonald, who died in 2021. You can watch the entire performance, and Jack's introduction,...

'Twin Peaks' Star Carel Struycken Reveals Loss of David Lynch Memorabilia in L.A. Fires
Image
As Los Angeles residents return home to sort through the rubble of their lives after the devastating fires that ravaged much of the area, there have been a lot of heartbreaking stories to come out of the region. Some people lost a little, while others lost everything, including treasured memorabilia they'd spent years collecting. Case in point: actor Carel Struycken and his wife, Tracey. Struycken portrayed The Giant in the original run of David Lynch's Twin Peaks in 1990, and The Fireman in 2017's Twin Peaks: The Return. Sadly, Lynch passed away earlier this month, making Struycken's loss of his one-of-a-kind Twin Peaks memorabilia and costumes even more upsetting.

Speaking with Variety, Struycken, a longtime character actor also known for his role in the live-action Addams Family movies, revealed that he wasn't able to save much of anything from his Altadena, California home, let alone his Twin Peaks treasures. He...

'Alien' Star Reveals Just How Real Their Reactions Were to the Chestburster Scene
Image
The following article contains spoilers for 1979’s Alien.Veronica Cartwright, the actor known for her role as Lambert in Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror classic Alien, has confirmed something about the chestburster scene that has always been discussed by those who participated in the film: the shock by the actors during the scene was very authentic, because they did not know firsthand how everything would happen.

Although she's not widely recognized as a horror icon, Cartwright is a veteran in the genre. When she was a teenager, she starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and later appeared in horror films like 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Witches of Eastwick. However, it was her role as Joan Lambert in Alien that made her a scream queen, even though her character met her demise in the sci-fi horror movie.

In the film, an intergalactic space crew responds to...

Jonathan Demme
‘An unmitigated joy’: why Married to the Mob is my feelgood movie
Jonathan Demme
The next entry in our series of writers recommending their favourite comfort films is a tribute to Jonathan Demme’s zesty gangster comedy

There’s no more perfect song to open a movie than Rosemary Clooney’s Mambo Italiano in Jonathan Demme’s Married to the Mob. It’s a delightful nonsense song that mimics Cuban mambo music while spilling out lyrics that are about as authentically Italian as a suburban Olive Garden. It’s Demme’s way of announcing that his gangster comedy will be a zesty, multicultural puttanesca that may evoke The Godfather and other genre standards, but mostly indulges in the cartoon kitsch of Long Island goombahs. The film that follows isn’t quite a parody, a spoof or a satire. It’s merely an unmitigated joy from start to finish.

There are so many fun touches around the edges of Married to the Mob – the colorful production design,...

Twin Peaks and Star Trek Actor Carel Struycken Loses Home in LA Wildfires
Image
Amongst the thousands of people who have lost their homes during the devastating Los Angeles wildfires this January, there are many familiar faces. This includes Carel Struycken, whose iconic presence has featured in numerous films and TV shows over the past several decades, including Barry Sonnenfeld’s Addams Family films and Twin Peaks, in which he played first The Giant, and then (in The Return) The Fireman.

Struycken may also be familiar from key roles in Men in Black, Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, The Witches of Eastwick, and Star Trek: The Next Generation. The 76-year-old actor and his wife, who resided in Altadena, lost everything after the Eaton Fire burned through their neighborhood. Jack Nicholson’s daughter showcases the legendary actor enjoying the holidays in a rare public photo on social media
Image
Nicholson is an actor so iconic, he’s sometimes referred to simply as “Jack.” The star of classics such as The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Chinatown, Batman, The Witches of Eastwick, The Departed and As Good As It Gets is certainly enjoying his retirement and continues to turn down roles. Lou Adler, a veteran record producer who is a close friend of Nicholson’s, revealed a couple of years ago, “A friend of mine wanted to put him in a movie. And he had a conversation with him. But Jack says, ‘I don’t want to do it.’ He goes, ‘You know what I did today? I sat under a tree and I read a book.’” Adler laughed, saying, “That sounds like Jack.” Then, he added that Jack is just “doing whatever he really wants to do.”

Nicholson’s public appearances are rare nowadays, even his appearances...

Jack Nicholson Created A Secret Trick That's Key To Every Part He Ever Played
Image
Jack Nicholson disappeared from Hollywood after what was an anticlimactic end to one of the greatest film careers of all time with 2010's "How Do You Know?" The movie saw Nicholson play the head of a big firm for which Paul Rudd's George works. If that doesn't sound like the best use of a screen legend, it wasn't. "How Do You Know?" ended up being a star-studded box office flop, with reviewers chastising writer/director James L. Brooks for wasting such impressive talent.

"How Do You Know?" starred Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson but surely the biggest waste was Nicholson himself, especially considering he ended his venerable on-screen career with this movie. By this point, Nicholson didn't need to do anything. In fact, he hadn't needed to do anything since he signed a bonkers deal with Warner Bros. for starring as the Joker in 1989's "Batman" and...

Cher Reflects On Suicidal Thoughts During Marriage To Sonny Bono: ‘I Couldn’t Imagine Any Other Option’

In her newly released memoir, Cher reflects on the challenges she faced during her marriage to Sonny Bono, shedding light on the difficulties behind their celebrated public partnership.

The book explores their journey from friends and roommates to an impulsive marriage in an apartment bathroom. It reveals the darker aspects of their relationship, including Bono’s infidelity and controlling behavior.

Cher describes how the strain of their marriage took a significant toll on her mental health, leading to moments of despair. In one instance, she recounts experiencing suicidal thoughts while staying in a Las Vegas hotel suite in October 1972.

“There I was, twenty-six years old and in what had become a loveless marriage,” she writes. “Sonny had given me the vehicle and the confidence to become the somebody my mother always told me I would be, and then he just lost interest.”

She continues: “I stepped barefoot onto the balcony...

Cher Says Director Peter Bogdanovich Was an "A**Hole" on the Set of 'Mask'
Image
In the 1980s, Cher appeared in a number of films that have since gone on to be regarded as classics. The Witches of Eastwick, Moonstruck, and, of course, Mask, the true story of Roy L. "Rocky" Dennis, a young man with craniodiaphyseal dysplasia who was portrayed by the phenomenal Eric Stoltz. Cher played his overprotective mother in the movie, which earned her the 1985 Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actress. However, things behind-the-scenes were no fun according to the actress, who recently called director Peter Bogdanovich an "a**hole."

Speaking with The Times to promote her new book, Cher: The Memoir Part 1, the singer/actress slammed the late director, who passed away in 2022 due to complications from Parkinson's disease. "He was an a**hole. He was not nice to the girls in the film and he was so f**king arrogant," she told the outlet before adding for emphasis, "I really,...

Cher Shares The Moment She First Fell In Love With The Spotlight
Cher
Image Source: HarperCollins For some pop music fans, there was a milestone reached in September, though it didn’t receive widespread attention: It was 60 years since the release of the very first Sonny & Cher single, Baby Don’t Go. Since then, Cher has been a fixture in American pop culture, with an Oscar, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, and a résumé that includes a dozen Top 10 singles and more than a dozen high-profile movies, including Moonstruck, Mask, The Witches of Eastwick, and Mermaids. Now, she’s written a book about her life and her illustrious career. Well, it’s actually two books, with the first out now and the second arriving next year. Cher: The Memoir, Part One covers her formative years; over the course of her career, we’ve spoken to her over the years, and she once recounted a memorable moment that helped inspire her to pursue a career on stage.

25 best movie witches, ranked worst to best
Image
Mere mortals have been fascinated by witchcraft for hundreds of years, and the film industry has taken note, with witch-themed movies going back more than 100 years.

In 1922, the silent partly documentary-style Swedish film “Haxan” sought to understand the roots and misunderstandings of witchcraft, and the mania that surrounded the witch hunts. Controversial at the time, it is now considered one of the most influential of the early horror films. Less than 20 years later, Margaret Hamilton would make the Wicked Witch the standard for evil witches, and help make “The Wizard of Oz” a timeless classic.

SEE25 best TV witches, ranked worst to best

In the decades since, witches have appeared in just about every genre of film. Early romantic comedies “I Married a Witch” and “Bell, Book and Candle” were so popular they inspired the classic 1960s TV series “Bewitched.” But while a witch’s antics on the small screen were amusing audiences,...

10 Horror Movies From The '80s That Were Well Ahead Of Their Time
Image
This article contains mention of violence and assault.

Horror movies of the 1980s are some of the best and most influential of the 20th century, and many of them are responsible for creating new niches within the genre. Blending the frightening aspects with drama, social commentary, and psychological thriller elements sets these films apart from their competition and distinguishes them from other works of horror. The 1980s were a particularly strong decade for horror because there was significant social and political upheaval happening around the world, which lends itself to being represented through art.

Though many of the most influential scary movies are well-remembered, there are plenty of underrated 1980s horror movies worth checking out. More often than not, terrifying and boundary-pushing works are misunderstood when they're first released, but later critical reception reveals them to be ahead of their times in terms of thematic storytelling or visual style. Overtly...

10 Best Horror Comedies Of The 1980s
Image
The '80s were a prominent decade in the horror genre and branching off from that are some of the best comedy horror films. The popular subgenre is often a hit or miss as some of the films lean too far into a campy, comedic tone, fully taking away from any effective thrills. Therefore, the best horror comedy films strike the right balance between the two genres and create an equally entertaining and spooky time.

Most comical, cheesy horror films are self-aware and make a deliberate effort to be a B-movie, but that's where they begin to differ from the best. Films like An American Werewolf in London are merely hoping to provide a few laughs with their frightening concepts. The best horror comedies range from classics like Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters to more underrated films such as Vampire's Kiss.

What Happened To The Cast Of The Rocky Horror Picture Show?
Image
Since it first hit theaters in 1975, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" has been a spooky season mainstay and a staple for late-night moviegoers. Based on the stage musical of the same name — which came out two years prior — the cult classic introduces a young couple, Janet Weiss and Brad Majors (Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick), whose car breaks down near a mysterious mansion; when they call on the house to ask for help, they're met by a fascinating cast of characters, to say the absolute least.

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is referred to as a "cult classic" for a reason; as Roger Ebert once put it, "it was ignored by pretty much everyone" when it originally came out. These days, pretty much every major city offers midnight viewings of the movie, inviting audiences to dress up, throw things at the screen, and participate while the movie screens. So what...

When the end of Yellowstone was officially announced last year, Paramount Network had set the wheels in motion for two more spinoffs. There was the prequel series, to be set in 1944, and then the present-day continuation, set to take place after the events of Yellowstone, which had the working title 2024.

Now, that sequel series is very much beginning to take shape.

That series will be titled The Madison and will star Michelle Pfeiffer, and it will be the next series to rollout in the Yellowstone universe. The Oscar-nominated movie star will also executive produce the new series from franchise boss Taylor Sheridan.

Leonard Engelman, Makeup Artist on ‘Rocky IV,’ ‘Moonstruck’ and Much More, Dies at 83
Image
Leonard Engelman, the esteemed makeup artist who worked on films including Rocky IV, The Princess Diaries, Batman & Robin and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and did Cher’s makeup for more than 30 years, has died. He was 83.

Engelman died Thursday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, his wife of 42 years, artist Esther Engelman, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unclear, she said.

The son of a Hollywood makeup artist, Engelman labored for a long time to convince the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to install a makeup branch, as those artisans had always been “at-large” members. And when it did so in 2006, he was elected its first governor. Later, he worked to have hairstylists added.

He also served as an Academy vice president and board member for many years.

Engelman received Emmy nominations in 1972 for an episode of Night Gallery and in 2001 for the miniseries Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis,...

Directors with the Most Weirdly Diverse Filmographies
Image
Film critic Andrew Sarris changed his profession forever when he introduced, to English-speaking cinephiles at least, the concept of “auteur theory.” The general conceit is that some rarified directors are so gifted, or commanding, in their control over the process of film production that they alone can give a film a “personal or unique stamp.” They are the ones who become the author of the movie you’re watching. If anyone. It’s a seductive theory which encourages the critic to look for points of narrative, visual, or thematic similarity between a filmmaker’s work. The more ideas or images that rhyme, the potentially more impressive the auteur’s command over the medium becomes.

However, while it is hard to dispute the existence of auteurs, the concept at times devalues the contributions of a film’s many other collaborators—especially if they’re, say, editors, production designers, or cinematographers a...

There Are Two Perfect Jack Nicholson Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes (And They're Not What You'd Expect)
Image
What's the best Jack Nicholson movie? Ask a group of film fans, and you'll likely get a half-dozen different answers. The actor's most historically significant movie may be "Chinatown," the sun-baked California noir from 1974 that earned 11 Oscar nominations and a permanent spot in the American Library of Congress' National Film Registry. Or it might be "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," the beloved adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel that swept the Oscars in 1975 and turned the already-popular Nicholson into Hollywood's hottest commodity.

The actor's most popular films according to Letterboxd users are Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece "The Shining" and Martin Scorsese's crime saga "The Departed." His highest-grossing role at the box office came in 1989, when Tim Burton cast him as the rictus-grin supervillain The Joker in "Batman." Other popular moneymakers featuring the veteran performer include James L. Brooks' "As Good As It Gets," Nancy Meyers' "Something's Gotta Give,...

I Still Want Justice For The 24% Rotten Tomatoes Score On This Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman Movie
Image
Despite its low critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, Practical Magic has a loyal audience who appreciate its charm and core message. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman's chemistry shines in the movie, adding depth to their characters. Practical Magic 2 is proof of the original movie's underrated status and lasting impact on fans.

While some movies earn their low critics scores on Rotten Tomatoes, theres one Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman movie that I still want to get the justice it deserves. As a so-called spooky child, theres a special place in my heart for any movies that fall into the categories of horror and spooky, and theres something extra-special about movies about witches. Although I admittedly arrived late to the greatness of movies like Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic, the latter immediately became one of my favorite movies about witches.

Directed by Griffin Dunne, and based on Alice Hoffmans 1995 novel of the same name,...

‘Witches’ Review: Self-Serious Doc Links Women’s Mental Health With the Ethereal
Image
As an artwork detailing the testimonies of ordinary women who have faced terrifying post-partum anxiety, depression and psychosis, Elizabeth Sankey’s 90-minute goth-lite documentary Witches succeeds in shedding light on a stigmatized and often silenced phenomenon many new mothers endure. However, the director takes this solid concept and dilutes it with trivial pop feminist pseudo-history, positing a dubious connection between the European and American witch trials of the 16th and 17th centuries and women’s post-birth psychological suffering.

Premiering at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and set to be distributed by streaming service Mubi, the film is certainly watchable but perhaps only 50 percent compelling.

Sankey argues that post-partum psychotic hallucinations may have led countless women of yore to willingly confess to cavorting with Satan. She showcases little evidence supporting this theory, aside from reading aloud a few sentences from primary sources, and attempts to wrap her suppositions in tritely nebulous metaphors...

George Miller's Only Oscar Win Was Originally a Much Darker Animated Movie
Image
Quick Links Happy Feet Was Originally Targeted at Older Viewers Happy Feet Once Had a Mythic, Sci-Fi Bent Happy Feet Ultimately Went More Kid Friendly George Miller's original vision for Happy Feet was darker and meant for older viewers, with more adult-oriented themes and disturbing imagery. The script originally explored deep themes of religion and myth, with elders praying for plentiful fishing seasons and exiling those who went against their ways. Warner Bros. pushed for a more kid-friendly version of Happy Feet, toning down the dark elements to appeal explicitly to children and ensure commercial success.

George Miller, the mastermind behind Mad Max, has one of the most eclectic filmographies of any working director. While his beloved franchise is obviously his main calling card, hes also worked in the biopic genre with Lorenzos Oil, dark fantasy with The Witches of Eastwick, and kid-friendly fare with the Babe films (he...

Furiosa Director George Miller Thinks We Can Still Avoid Our Own Mad Max Apocalypse [Exclusive Interview]
Image
At this point in his 40+ year career, it can be said that filmmaker George Miller is a mythmaker. Despite his cinematic range, which spans brutal, violent live-action movies to family-friendly animated fare, all of his works have a spark of myth about them, whether he's dealing with women experimenting with the occult (as in "The Witches of Eastwick") or anthropomorphized animals venturing beyond their comfort zones (as in "Babe" and "Happy Feet").

Of course, Miller's magnum opus is what has now been officially dubbed the "Mad Max" saga, a series of films that has spanned the entire breadth of Miller's career to date. The fifth in the saga, "Furiosa," is in theaters now, and it's a picture that should silence anyone who still refers to these films as merely action movies. Unlike the previous "Mad Max" film, 2015's "Fury Road" (which "Furiosa" is a prequel to), this movie is a...
