Located in the UK, Powerhouse/Indicator is the latest to jump on the bandwagon with lavishly appointed blu ray sets each featuring three of his films. Though all these movies have been previously released through other companies, Powerhouse has upped the ante with fresh transfers and a broad slate of new extras.

In many ways the ultimate combination of stop motion animation, adventure, and overall production quality, 7th Voyage Of Sinbad is still one of Harryhausen’s most popular works. The 3 Worlds of Gulliver
Ray Harryhausen eases up for his second color Dynamation feature, restricting the stop-motion and instead utilizing traveling mattes to make a more juvenile adventure movie for smaller kiddies. The big draw is the beautiful music score by fantasy favorite Bernard Herrmann.

Hollywood's Stop-Motion VFX Wizard Dies
Ray Harryhausen dies at 92: Jason and the Argonauts, One Million Years B.C. special-effects ‘titan’ Long before the computer-generated imagery of Jurassic Park, Avatar, The Avengers, and Iron Man 3, there were special-effects wizard Ray Harryhausen’s painstakingly created stop-motion models, which graced dozens of movies from the late ’40s to the early ’80s. Earlier today, Ray Harryhausen died at age 92 in London, where he had been living since the early ’60s. Among his movie credits are Jason and the Argonauts, One Million Years BC, and the original Clash of the Titans. Born in Los Angeles on June 29, 1920, Harryhausen became interested in cinema’s visual effects after watching Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s 1933 blockbuster King Kong, featuring stop-motion effects by Willis H. O’Brien. "I came out of the theater awestruck," Harryhausen would reminisce to the Chicago Tribune in 1999. "It was such a totally different, unusual film.

Creature Effects Legend Ray Harryhausen Has Passed Away at the Age of 93
When I think of Ray Harryhausen my mind immediately goes to 1981's Clash of the Titans. I was only four years old when it was released, but the movie lived on for years and still does to this day and I remember watching it over and over again. Today it saddens me to report Harryhausen has passed away at the age of 93. Harryhausen's work lives and breathes in today's films just as much as it did when he was creating stop-motion creature effects from the late '40s up until Titans in 1981 and his work has inspired legions of filmmakers from Peter Jackson and Tim Burton to Steven Spielberg and Sam Raimi. The way he worked was the true definition of animation and a life embodied by the phrase "where there's a will there's a way." The Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation has issued a statement on their official Facebook...

New Ray Harryhausen Documentary Poster
Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan (2011)
A new documentary celebrating the life and work of the great Ray Harryhausen, Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan, is heading for our cinemas and we've laid a pair of monster-sized paws on its new poster. Fittingly, many of Harryhausen's greatest creatures are present and correct. There's Kali, Medusa, Talos, Bubo, Calibos, the Cyclops, the Roc and a clutch of skeletons. We're guessing the giant squirrel from The 3 Worlds Of Gulliver was too busy gathering huge acorns to make the shoot. The new doc features contributions from heavyweight fans like Steven Spielberg and James Cameron. As Empire's review points out this month, it's also brimming with "stunning test footage and genius clips". Should be plenty for Harryhausen aficionados and stop-motion fans to get their teeth into.Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan is out on November 9. For more on the great man in the meantime, check out our rundown of 20 great stop-motion monsters.

Happy birthday, Ray Harryhausen!
The revered FX legend celebrated his 90th year at a star-studded BFI celebration. But this was no sycophantic wallow. He's someone who really changed film

It was nearing the end of Bafta's Ray Harryhausen 90th birthday tribute at the BFI Southbank last Saturday that special effects makeup maestro Rick Baker took to the stage to offer his praise. For the previous two hours or so, a stunning list of the movie industry's biggest, most innovative and respected names had, in person or via video messages, offered their undying love and gratitude to Harryhausen and his work, all offering incredibly specific tales of when they first encountered his unique contribution to cinema and how greatly it affected them. For Baker, the problem he faced was how could he say anything that had not been already said – even the "we are all children of the Hydra's teeth" line had been used. Twice.

Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week
Mongrels, Jason Manford, The Pandorica Opens and some corking movies star in this week's guide to the next seven days of UK TV...

Another short list week and, again, it seems only comedy is brave enough to take on the World Cup with series kickoffs.

Jason Manford: Live helps us see the funny side of life and urinals on Saturday, 19th June at 10:00pm on Channel 4 with a hometown performance in Manchester filmed in 2009.

Then on Tuesday, 22nd June, the first of an eight-part "urban multi-species adult puppet comedy" series, Mongrels, starts up at 10:00pm on BBC3. BBC2's animal-based animated series of 2004, I Am Not An Animal, had celebrity voices like Steve Coogan and Simon Pegg behind the inky animals, where Mongrels looks to focus on TV personalities playing in the mix among the puppets, voiced by Paul Kaye, Katy Brand and other comedic actors.
