Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted

Like many comedy fans, my introduction to Tig occurred during a Comedy Central Presents in the early 2000's. While it felt like I was seeing a work-in-progress I have thought about a few of those jokes regularly ever since. Her underground status broke mainstream with a remarkable show she did at The Largo in 2012. Fresh off of several personal tragedies, she performed an impossible set that will likely live immortally at that venue.

With a couple of documentaries about her struggles growing her name, this special had a good deal riding on it for her. I can't imagine she will have a hard go of it getting stage time at any US club, but this is a test to many for their tolerance of her subtle and measured style. Many portions are brilliant and understated. There are few moments gut- busting but a wealth of genuinely funny material. Thoughtful is underrated with comedy audiences, but inherently effective. You will remember a good deal more from this set than cheap quips from others. There are fewer words per minute than almost any set I've ever seen, timing is pushed to the limit.

The set isn't perfect, but honest and meaningful. She shows a vulnerability that is as literal as it gets. You're hearing this from someone who fell in love with her years ago, but for viewers, she deserves more than traditional comic consideration.

Stopped watching after 10 min-her jokes were about how she does terrible stand-up. Only joke is on audience who paid for the show.

It's almost like people pretend this person is funny out of pity. Seriously. Ho w is this a thing? Who is giving these unfunny women their own specials?

Absolutely fantastic comedy special!

This is my favorite kind of stand-up comedy, one that is clever, but not too clever - doesn't make you feel stupid, but causes you to relate. One that is not afraid to be simple and silly, but also doesn't shy away from seriousness, and makes it lighter.

And above all, I love that it's not full of cursing and vulgarity. I'm no prude, but there's something very refreshing about a clean comedy special.

In the past, I have avoided Tig Notaro, just because she always came across as a little bit, boring to me, in the small bits that I've seen of her. I usually like somebody more animated. But she definitely won me over, with her likability and soft wit. I found myself laughing loudly, heartily, and often, while watching this. It caused me to reevaluate who my favorite stand-up comics are, and how I would rank them.

I will say, she reminded me of another favorite of mine, Ellen DeGeneres - but a more stoic flavor.

I am impressed, and I think I have another favorite comedian now!

I have to start off saying I guess I still BELIEVE I think Tig is probably a great writer; that is, I really like shows she has written/collaborated with such as Inside Amy Schumer and the Sarah Silverman Program. In fact, the couple of scenes where she acted on the Sarah Silverman program were hilarious. But after watching this, I guess I'm no in doubt as to how much of the parts of those shows I laughed at were actually written by Tig...since I didn't laugh once during this stand-up act. I didn't so much as smile. In fact it just made me sad to see her talk about "bombing" while bombing. Her stage presence was like watching an even MORE listlessly slow female version of Steven Wright on heroin. I really wish I had something good or funny to say...but then again...neither did Tig, so I guess we're even?
