I like this so much. Near history, '79-87 from down under perspective and great ensemble characters (Rita and Ted particularly). Easy to enjoy but you might bring up subtitles because of accents. 3 seasons now on Prime, 3 more to come. Terrific use of regional pop music. I think its better than Outrageous Fortune.
I absolutely love New Zealand tv shows! Antonia Prebble is a tremendous actress! Outrageous Fortune was fantastic and Westside knocks it out of the park. I wish American streaming services would give us more New Zealand and Australian shows, I just can't get enough of them. Peacock needs to get season 6 up for viewing.
After watching many Ozzie shows over the last few years we thought that we'd try a Kiwi show. I haven't seen Outrageous Fortune so didn't realize that this was a prequil. It's an interesting concept but becomes repetitive. There are too many sex scenes and I am tired of hearing women moaning....meaningless filler.
I've never been to New Zealand so maybe the fashions of the time period are accurate (seems 10-15 behind US), but some of the late 1970s hair and clothes scream Liverpool 1965. Even in 1981 it appears some characters are stuck in the 1960s.
I don't like the political overtones....the last thing I want in a crime show is preachy leftist BS. Overall the show is okay, but not great, and suffers from all the maladays that modern shows are afflicted with: PC BS.
Editing to add: I bumped up the rating after finishing the show (Season 6 isn't available yet). Once the political stuff was over the show improved and actually became very good over the last 3 seasons.

..through two seasons this is as good as it gets. Anyone remembering Outrageous Fortune can relate. In the States we can't come close to doing this stuff... so wish we could. There's no weak parts.. everything works, and the main lead (empowered female) centers the entire deal.. she is just amazingly good. You want to be drawn into the story-line, and these are the the kinds of productions that do it better than any of the numerous others. They've committed to a third season to air sometime in 2017 and cannot wait. There's only a handful of top notch shows out there right now.. and without a doubt this is one of the more outstanding of the entire group.
¿Sabías que…?
- TriviaIn the first episode of season five, Ted West talks about Richard Prebble the politician. Richard Prebble is the real-life uncle of actress Antonia Prebble (Rita West).
