Disney announced Tuesday that director Joachim Rønning’s sci-fi feature is set to begin streaming Jan. 7 on Disney+. The latest installment in the Tron franchise hit theaters Oct. 10 and stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Gillian Anderson and Jeff Bridges.

Tron: Ares centers on an advanced program known as Ares (Leto) getting sent from the digital Grid into the real world, marking mankind’s first interaction with AI.

Sure, the Academy has narrowed the field to shortlists in 12 categories, the American Film Institute and National Board of Review have announced their picks for the year’s best films and the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes have revealed their nominations. Stranger Things brought in $2.5 million with 100 percent capacity at the Marquis Theatre and an average ticket price moving up to $173, amid the release of the last season of the Netflix series. Harry Potter grossed $3.7 million, with Tom Felton from the movie series in the cast, and the musical revival of Ragtime continued to build on its momentum with a new record box office tally of $1.6 million.

Tatiana Schlossberg, the daughter and middle child of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg’s three children, died on Tuesday. She was 35.

Topics that felt existential just a few years ago — the need for record labels, streaming payouts, the billion-dollar royalty black box — feel tiny now as the industry faces even larger questions in the AI age: Will music fans always care if a song is AI-generated? How much of a threat are AI songs going to be? How do artists get paid? Who will own this?

The year 2025 did not disappoint in the documentaries category, and that means we have to recap the biggest titles that educated and enlightened us the most.

Some made us dance, some made us cry, and others made us absolutely downright angry, and all of them left us with more information than we had before. From the Sundance-winning Netflix documentary series “The Perfect Neighbor” to the thrilling life and discoveries of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Hersh Seymour, 2025 fulfilled the viewing needs of fans of the documentary/docuseries genre and then some.

The 2025 box office was marked by big boom periods and droughts that lasted for weeks, if not months. In a way, that’s a parallel for how the year broke down for each of Hollywood’s major studios.

No studio was exempt from releasing a big box office bust, but every studio got through the year in a different way. Some made it through via specialty and low-budget releases. Canadian romance novelist Rachel Reid first saw Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams in person on the set of “Heated Rivalry,” Jacob Tierney’s television adaptation of her queer hockey book series “Game Changers.”

“They were filming the very first sex scene, their first hookup and it’s the longest sex scene on the show,” Reid tells me. “It was a closed set, so I was just sitting on a couch for four hours while they did that. I had headphones, so I could hear it and I had read the script, but I couldn’t see it. I was just listening.

A court order sought by the Los Angeles Police Department has blocked the release of any medical records connected to the deaths of Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office said it received the court order at 10:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve “to place a security hold” on any medical reports as the LAPD continues its homicide investigation.

Yvette Nicole Brown is speaking out ahead of the release of CNN’s documentary on Chevy Chase, I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, which reopens old wounds from the set of NBC’s Community involving allegations of racist slurs and harassment.

Brown, who starred as Shirley Bennett on the comedy, posted a statement on Instagram that appeared to address the documentary, though she never referenced it by name.

“These are things I’ve never spoken of publicly and perhaps never will,” Smith wrote. “Anyone currently speaking For or About me with perceived authority is speaking without Ever speaking to me about the things they claim to know about. They actually don’t really know me — at all.”

She continued, “They also have no knowledge of my relationship with anyone I’ve worked with & cannot credibly speak on any current or previous issues. I hate that this all had to be said.

“Tron: Ares” will park its light cycle at Disney+, as the movie arrives on the streamer on Jan. 7.

“Corey Feldman vs. the World” director Marcie Hume disputed Corey Feldman’s legal team’s claim that he was not aware of the documentary with a new behind-the-scenes clip, showing the musician and actor participating in filming of the new movie.

The documentary, which debuted Dec. 12, sees Feldman allege that he was molested by Corey Haim while filming their 1987 film, “The Lost Boys.”

In response, Feldman’s legal team said in a statement to media that he had “no knowledge of the production of this documentary or its release. He was not involved in the creative choices, characterization or portrayal of his statements or others in the film.”

Michael J. Fox has made his Shrinking debut.

On Tuesday, Apple TV released the trailer for the third season of Shrinking, which stars Jason Segel and Harrison Ford. In the trailer, Fox meets Dr. Paul Rhoades (Ford) in a waiting room.

“What are you in for?” Fox asks Paul. “Parkinson’s. You?” Paul responds, to which Fox jokes, “Just a haircut,” and they both start laughing.

Paul’s had Parkinson’s since season one. However, he initially tried to hide it until he realized he needed to face his disease.

The guest role marks Fox’s return to acting after stepping away in 2020 due to memory and speech issues from Parkinson’s disease.

Shrinking follows Jimmy’s (Segel) grieving therapist, who began breaking the rules by telling his clients exactly what he was thinking — and ignoring his ethics. By doing so, he found himself making changes in people’s lives as well as his own.

There are two things you can count on right now in television: football and “Tracker.” Both once again dominated Variety’s annual look at the most-watched telecasts in primetime.

This year, a full 48 of the top 100 slots went to NFL games — up from 45 in 2024 — and that number actually jumps to 55 if you include six NFL-related studio shows and one weather delay.

“Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary makes his acting debut in A24’s “Marty Supreme” alongside Timothée Chalamet, and one of his standout scenes involves spanking the Oscar-nominated actor with a ping pong paddle.

In the Josh Safdie-directed sports dramedy, O’Leary plays Milton Rockwell, a successful pen entrepreneur who is married to retired actress Kay Stone (Gwyneth Paltrow). After Chalamet’s aspiring ping-pong champion Marty Mauser becomes entangled with Kay, he realizes Milton could be his ticket to the world championship in Tokyo — but it comes with a humiliating price.

In an interview with Variety, O’Leary said that Chalamet had the option to sit out of the scene, but the 30-year-old actor insisted the film feature his real butt.

“When it came time to whack him, there was a stunt ass. There was a double,” O’Leary said. “[Chalamet] wouldn’t do it. He said he’ll do it himself.

No matter what the conservative politicians or any of the other bigots in the world have to say about it, queer people aren’t going anywhere and there were a panoply of great films in 2025 that prove it. Movies that stretched across genres, mediums, and multiple communities to share joy, fear, unity, loneliness, complexity, silliness, sorrow and laughter.

We say, may 2026 bring even more wonderful queer films to the foreground, in defiance of all those who want to shove these characters and stories and themes back into the closet. For now, these are our picks for the best LGBTQ+ movies of 2025.

Director Marcie Hume is responding to a claim that Corey Feldman was not aware of footage she shot for her just-released documentary about his life on his rock tour, “Corey Feldman vs. the World.”

Variety broke the news that, in the documentary, Feldman alleges that Corey Haim molested him. Feldman’s lawyers responded that the mention of molestation was not physical, but rather referred to Haim’s advances towards him. Feldman’s legal team also said he had “no knowledge of the production of this documentary or its release. He was not involved in the creative choices, characterization, or portrayal of his statements or others in the film.”

In a newly-released scene from Hume, Feldman grabs the camera and turns it around on the director, saying, “Two shot, here’s the deal: So Marcie’s on the bus with us, because Marcie is the documentarian who is making the film that you’re watching.

There is a recently burgeoning genre of documentaries — usually either celebrity or true crime in focus — driven not by aesthetic or storytelling imperatives but by (self-)promotional machinery. They’re unscripted movies or series that look at the life of your favorite ’80s movie stars or unsolved murders as fodder for breathless online reports titled “10 Things We Learned From …” or “[Insert Famous Person’s Name Here] Finally Reveals …”

The emphasis is on revelation and not introspection or reflection. In a way, then, a documentary like Angus Wall’s Being Eddie, a generally amiable and adulatory 90 minutes streaming on Netflix, fails; with its softly hagiographic approach, the director never pushes Eddie Murphy to any place that feels untapped or confrontational, and therefore newsworthy.

“KPop Demon Hunters” stars Arden Cho and Ahn Hyo-seop will make their late night debut on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” next month.

The speaking voices behind beloved characters Rumi and Jinu, respectively, will appear on the NBC late night show on Monday, Jan. 12, which will also feature Kristen Wiig and Ashton Kutcher, as well as a musical performance by Ty Meyer.

The teaser trailer (below) focused on the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) follows the similarly sentimental first look at the return of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).

Here Thor is shown with his daughter (India Rose Hemsworth) and then praying to his father to protect him before, presumably, doing battle with Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) so he can return safely home to her.

The somber teaser for “Avengers: Doomsday” shows the God of Thunder on his knees sending a plea of strength to his father, Odin, asking for vigor in the battle ahead and protection for his adoptive daughter, Love (played by real-life daughter India Rose Hemsworth).
