French socialist politician, Prime Minister 1992-1993. An ally and friend of President Francois Mitterrand, he also held the positions of chief of staff in 1981 after managing Mitterrand's presidential campaign, head of the Ministry of Social Affairs and National Solidarity 1982-1984, and minister of the economy, finance, and budget 1984-1986 and 1988-1992, as well as Mayor of Nevers, a small, historic city about 130 miles south of Paris.

Father of Catherine (married to Georges Cottineau), Lise (married to Vincent Sol) and Pierre.

Son of Adrien Bérégovoy and Hélène Baudelin.
