Exclusive interview: Demián Rugna on ‘When Evil Lurks’
Image
Few horror films in recent years have hit with the ferocity, imagination and existential dread of When Evil Lurks. Written and directed by Argentina’s Demián Rugna (Terrified), the 2023 film blends supernatural terror with razor-sharp social commentary, delivering a story where demonic possession is not only contagious, but also unstoppable once the system decides it’s someone else’s problem. The result is a furious, violent descent into hellish horror and one that left genre fans reeling and critics hailing Rugna as one of the boldest voices in modern horror.

Now, When Evil Lurks is getting the prestige treatment it deserves, with a stunning new 4K and limited edition Blu-ray release from Second Sight Films. In our latest video interview, Rugna sits down with Erica Vilkus from Love Horror to talk about the new edition and the passion that went into curating it, including his appreciation for the respect Second Sight...

Stars: Ezequiel Rodriguez, Demian Salomon, Luis Ziembrowski, Silvina Sabater | Written and Directed by Demián Rugna

When Evil Lurks (Cuando Acecha la Maldad) is the new feature film from Argentinian director Demián Rugna. Rugna assured himself a place in horror history with his film Terrified in 2017 and then vanished off the scene until his segment in last year’s Satanic Hispanics. Thankfully he didn’t make us wait another five years for something new, and When Evil Lurks premiered this year at TIFF as part of its Midnight Madness program.

Appropriately enough the film starts somewhere around midnight when Pedro and his brother Jimmy are awakened by the sound of gunshots somewhere in the woods. Going to investigate the next morning they find a body, or half of one anyway, with a strange device nearby and a notebook in a language the brothers don’t recognize nearby.

As it turns out...

When Evil Lurks Director Demián Rugna Developing New Vampire Horror Comedy Along With Sequel
Image
When Evil Lurks Director Demián Rugna eyes a sequel along with a new vampire horror-comedy film.

Per Bloody Disgusting, Rugna has set his sights on developing two new films in the coming years. The first will be a sequel to the breakout horror hit When Evil Lurks, while the second, Felix: A Complex Puzzle, will be a vampire horror-comedy revolving around Omin, a vampire who loses several key pieces of himself, and Felix, a hypochondriac who is unwittingly drawn into the film's sprawling story.

Per the official synopsis for Felix: A Complex Puzzle, "Omin, a hard-partying vampire playboy and leader of the notorious ‘Blood-Suckers’ clan. Cuando acecha la maldad (2023)
‘When Evil Lurks’ Director Developing Vampire Comedy ‘Felix: A Complex Puzzle’
Cuando acecha la maldad (2023)
Writer/Director Demián Rugna is keeping busy. The filmmaker is not only developing a sequel to When Evil Lurks but a new vampire horror-comedy, Felix: A Complex Puzzle, too, per a new press release.

Not only does Felix sound like a break from tone from Rugna, but it also sounds like a break from standard vampire fare: the vampire will be hunting down his own body parts this time.

The film follows “Omin, a hard-partying vampire playboy and leader of the notorious ‘Blood-Suckers’ clan. After falling into a river during a wild yacht bender, Omin is presumed dead and sent to the morgue, where doctors mistakenly harvest all his organs, including a lung. Waking up the next morning, disoriented and dismembered, Omin rallies vampire bounty hunters from across the globe—from Romania to Indigenous American clans—to track down his missing body parts. Meanwhile, in the Big City, we meet Felix,...

Exclusive: ‘When Evil Lurks’ Director Demian Rugna Developing Vampire Horror Movie ‘Felix,’ Inspired by ‘Fright Night’ and ‘The Lost Boys’
Image
After terrifying the entire world with last year’s When Evil Lurks, which I gave four stars straight out of its shocking TIFF Midnight Madness world premiere, Argentine filmmaker Demian Rugna is set to return with something completely different. Last month, we landed the exclusive first update and its full premise out of the Cannes 2025 international market. Read all of the grisly details below.

Currently in development with Buenos Aires–based production, financing, and sales label FilmSharks, Rugna’s upcoming project, Felix: A Complex Puzzle, is set to shake up the horror landscape in a whole new way. This time, it’s with a heavy dose of blood, absurdity, and fangs.

The project is said to contain the humor-and-genre combo punch of recent horror-comedy classic Zombieland. Its script concerns a legendary ancient vampire who wakes up in a morgue after a night of debauchery to find his vital organs have been harvested and donated nationwide.

Supernatural Horror Film 'When Evil Lurks' Gets Exciting Sequel Update
Image
In 2023, one of the most jaw-dropping horror films was released, and the genre has not been the same since. Demián Rugna, Argentine horror film director, screenwriter, and editor, brought the modern horror genre, and more specifically possession films, into a new era of guttural storytelling with his feature film. Rugna's Shudder-produced film shocked audiences that thought they had seen it all before. The possession horror movie in question is When Evil Lurks, and it's set in a rural area of Argentina and followsa pair of brothers who find a mutilated corpse near their property. Image
Writer/Director Demián Rugna’s gnarly possession horror movie When Evil Lurks ended on a somber note that left the door ajar for continuation. The filmmaker recently revealed that he’s not done yet; a sequel is already in development.

Rugna recently appeared on an episode of “La Broma Infinita” from the Argentine streaming channel Gelantina, where he spoke about filming When Evil Lurks and the status of its sequel.

The horror filmmaker tells the hosts, roughly translated, that “We have part two written, yes, and we’re just waiting for the funding to come through. We have to make some script modifications to make it perfect, but the studio that wants to make it is already there.”

While Rugna doesn’t mention which studio is ready to produce, it’s worth noting that Shudder was behind the first film, co-producing with Aramos Cine and Machaco Films. Even better is...

Hermana Muerte (2023)
Top 10 Horror Movies to Watch on Halloween
Hermana Muerte (2023)
This Halloween, the OTTs are packed with malevolence and horror, as they all have a lot to offer. In this article, we have selected the top 10 films from Netflix, Prime Video, Shudder, Hulu, and HBO Max for you so that you don’t have to go through ratings and Metacritic reviews. These films have put their names as the top contenders in this genre in recent times. So, without further ado, let’s jump into the listicle, shall we?

Sister Death (2023)

Sister Death emerges as Netflix’s eerie Halloween offering, diverging from typical jumpscare horror. This visually arresting film navigates the realm of faith, intertwining sinister elements. However, its downfall lies in a disjointed narrative structure, akin to a fragile house of cards collapsing under scattered plot reveals.

Contrary to the acclaimed 2017 Spanish horror, Verónica, Sister Death struggles to meet elevated expectations as a prequel. Verónica stands as one of Netflix’s premier horror films,...

Friday One Sheet: Mickey 17

Who needs credit blocks anymore? The new poster for Bong Joon Ho's science fiction cloning comedy Mickey 17 sees Robert Pattinson framed in ochre and rust. The numbers 1 through 16 are cleverly hiding in plain sight, anchored by the 17 patch on the actual title character, here sporting a goofy, befuddled look that is far more eye catching than it ought to be. California based MOcean has been featured in this column more than a few times recently, with the design house's work for Caitlin Cronenberg's Humane and Demián Rugna's When Evil Lurks, as well as Jeff Nicols' The Bikeriders.  I like the calcium-oxide coloured border, which offers the director card but also the rating, release date, and the IMAX logo in a quite discrete...

Spirits of those loved and lost wreak global havoc in director Guillermo Amoedo’s comeback title “Loved Ones” (“Seres Queridos”). Voting now live for Fangoria Chainsaw Awards 2024 (full list of nominees!)
Image
The only award season that matters is here! Joking (kind of), but seriously, Fangoria just released the complete list of nominees for the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. Considering how often horror gets shut out of the mainstream award shows, it's nice to have at least one thing we can rely on year after year.

Last year's Chainsaw Awards included big wins for movies like The Black Phone, Terrifier 2, and Prey. This time, the categories are again stacked, with films like Abigail, Evil Dead Rise, The First Omen, Talk To Me, Late Night with the Devil, and many more going head to head.

Specific performances are also being highlighted, like Tobin Bell in Saw X and Kathryn Newton for both Lisa Frankenstein and Abigail. It's been a fantastic few years for horror, and it'll be exciting to see which movies pull ahead this time around.

In addition to popular categories such as Best Wide Release,...

Paul Tremblay on His Haunted New Novel ‘Horror Movie’ and the Joy of Having Robert Downey Jr. and M. Night Shyamalan Adapt His Books
Image
Horror author Paul Tremblay developed a deep love of spooky stories early on, and he tackles the haunted films genre with his newest novel, “Horror Movie” (out Tuesday via William Morrow and Company). The plot concerns a ’90s cult classic horror movie which left all but one cast member dead and the dark stories that are dredged up as a remake comes closer to reality.

Professionally, Tremblay is no stranger to scary movies, as his 2019 novel “The Cabin at the End of the World” was adapted into M. Night Shyamalan’s 2023 film “Knock at the Cabin.” Next up is an adaptation of his 2015 book “A Head Full of Ghosts,” which is set to be produced by Robert Downey Jr. and directed by Austrian filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, who also helmed dark horror films like “Goodnight Mommy” and “The Lodge.”

Tremblay spoke with Variety about horror movies both real and imagined,...

Handling The Undead Interview: Director Thea Hvistendahl

The dramatic horror film Handling The Undead goes into a wider release this coming Friday. We had the opportunity to speak with the director and co-writer, Norwegian filmmaker Thea Hvistendahl about their debut feature film.    We talk about themes in the film such as second chances and sorrow, adpating John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel to screen, and what it meant to premiere at Sundance.   And do not worry horror nerds because at the end we did go into what it took to create the recently deceased son of Renate Reinsve's character, Anna. It's one of the best child puppets I've seen since Demian Rugna's Terrified. Even better because this time a whole crew was involved in making it animated.    Check out the interview...

Rocco’s Favorites of 2023
Image
Anyone who knows me would say my taste runs ever so slightly counter to the popular opinion but up top I wanted to shout out some big titles that I appreciate but didn’t quite make my favorites list. Oftentimes it feels like the days of true-blue horror icons are behind us, but Gerard Johnstone and Akela Cooper’s M3GAN was a veritable hoot that gave us an instantly iconic tiny terror in tights who more than lived up to the memes and showed everyone that hasn’t quite come around yet on HBO’s Girls just how #mother Allison Williams is. Also, that Skatt Brothers “Walk the Night” needle drop took up residence in my head last January and has not left. Talk to Me was one of the more intense in-theater experiences I had this year, and though it lost something the more I sat with it, what...

Bloody Disgusting Carves Up the 10 Best Kills in 2023’s Horror Movies
Image
Horror is the gift that keeps giving, especially when it comes to inventive carnage on screen. On that front, it’s been a stellar year for memorable kills in horror thanks to a slew of franchise entries, original slashers, surprising takes on demonic possession, and more.

What might be most surprising, in the best possible way, is how 2023 horror pushed boundaries when it came to on-screen deaths. 2023 horror wasn’t afraid to get ruthless when it came to shattering the taboo of killing kids. Nor was it afraid to deliver unforgettable moments on screen through unexpected demises that made us groan, cheer, recoil, and even laugh.

We’re saluting the ten best kills in 2023 horror movies, which means massive spoilers ahead.

You’ve been warned…

Beau is Afraid – Mid-Coitus Shock

Sometimes, it’s not the goriest or most elaborate death that lingers, but the funniest. In Ari Aster’s strange odyssey,...

5 Unconventional Demonic Possession Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
At its most basic, possession horror exploits the primal fear of losing control over your own person, usually due to a demonic entity. Victims in a possession movie are rendered mere passengers in their bodies as a sinister force takes over and destroys them from the inside. That potent combination of body horror and a complete lack of free will makes for inherently terrifying and fertile ground for exploration. While possession horror is often tied to biblical battles of good versus evil, that’s not always the case.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to demonic possession horror titles that leave conventional depictions of faith and exorcisms behind for new terrain and metaphors.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

For more Stay Home, Watch Horror picks, click here.

Demon Wind – AMC+, Shudder, Tubi

Possession horror tends to take the possession seriously, opting for full-throttle scares and intense emotional or faith-related stakes.

When Evil Lurks: A Possession Horror Movie for People Sick of Possession Movies
Image
When Evil Lurks offers a new take on the possession trope, forcing viewers to forget everything they thought they knew about such a recurring theme in horror movies. Distributed by Shudder, the leading platform for horror movies, the movie was the streaming service's pick for 2023's Halloween, shocking audiences with a truly mean-spirited narrative that rejects any moral principles.

Demián Rugna, best known for the popular supernatural horror Aterrados, or Terrified, is the Argentinian director behind the film, and who is interested in making movies for horror fans, not the wider audience (per Bloody Disgusting). When Evil Lurks follows two brothers forced to leave their remote village after a demon-infected man unleashes an indomitable evil dangerously close to their home, unaware that by fleeing they are only leading the demon straight to their family.

Here's how When Evil Lurks is the perfect possession horror movie for those who are sick of possession horror movies.

Greg Nicotero Talks Romero, Zombies, Practical Effects and More at Rhode Island Comic Con [Event Report]
Image
This year’s Rhode Island Comic Con guest list boasted big names like Anthony Daniels, Carl Weathers, Carrie-Anne Moss, Christina Ricci, Evangeline Lilly, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Linda Hamilton, and Marissa Tomei, to name a few, alongside hundreds of vendors and artists.

A highlight of the weekend was an intimate panel with legendary special effects artist-turned-director Greg Nicotero, who shared his reflections on The Walking Dead now that it has come to an end, in addition to insight from nearly 40 years in the industry.

Nicotero’s fascination with the horror genre stems from his childhood. “I grew up in Pittsburgh, and there was a TV show called Chiller Theater on every Saturday night. The host was a guy called Bill Cardille, who plays the reporter in Night of the Living Dead. I would stay up every Saturday to watch it. July was classic horror month, so they would show Frankenstein,...

Pedro In ‘When Evil Lurks,’ Explained: How Did Pedro Help The Birth Of Evil?
Image
Horror films generally do little to add layers to their characters. But I think I’ve seen an anomaly of the highest caliber in Demian Rugna’s When Evil Lurks, where the characters are deeply immersed in the world and they need not explain too much to gain our trust that something truly wicked is going on in the film. The film has some of the most fascinating characters, and they are made all the more potent by their placement in the context of a neo-noir western. When Evil Lurks knows exactly when to turn the proceedings up a notch, and even though it becomes too obscure during some moments, especially when dealing with the origins of evil, it keeps us engaged in the plot. It wouldn’t have been possible without complex characters that had enough gas to keep the events interesting. Most of the film rides on Pedro’s shoulders,...

‘When Evil Lurks’ Summary & Ending Explained: Why Did Pedro Fail To Stop The Birth Of Evil?
Image
A gnarly blend of apocalyptic body horror and an inexplicable element of something evil, Demian Rugna’s Argentinian horror is a fever dream of sorts. Counting on the creeping sense of dread that’s only elevated by the enigmatic nature of the fear’s source, When Evil Lurks epitomizes a state of existence dangerously devoid of hope. What works is just how merciless it is in not giving you the predictable respite that’s usually the reassuring blanket you wrap around yourself when you watch a horror movie. And where Rugna’s film falls short are the anticlimactic brakes it pulls every time you rave yourself up, expecting something even more severe. It’s quite a journey through a maze of naive actions and unforgiving consequences that two brothers, Pedro and Jimmy, are haplessly pushed to take. Let’s see how well their wayward efforts fare.

Spoilers Ahead

‘When Evil Lurks’ (2023) Review: Is It Really The Scariest Film of The Year?
Image
When brothers in a rural Argentinian town discover a possessed man, they decide to move him away with the help of some townspeople in the hopes of saving the town from being “infected”. What follows is the consequence of their arrogance, which may lead to the birth of true evil. When Evil Lurks is a Spanish-language Argentinian film directed by Demian Rugna (Terrified), starring Ezequiel Rodríguez and Demián Salomón in lead roles. I’d say that as a horror enthusiast, I’ve seen quite a few questionable films in my time, but this one has to take the cake for the most anxiety-inducing one. I could say this film is deliciously evil, at least for those who like to dabble in the world of horror, but it would be a disservice to how grotesque the whole thing is. When Evil Lurks is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s...

What to watch October 27, 2023: Movie awards contenders
Image
We probably won’t see this week’s streaming debuts on the Oscars’ nomination roster come January, but they offer a variety of genres that will satisfy whatever mood you find yourself in this weekend.

The contender to watch this week: “Pain Hustlers“

The opioid epidemic has fueled a wave of movie and TV shows in the last few years, from “Dopesick” and “Ben Is Back” to the gorgeous Oscar-nominated documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed.” Hollywood’s latest Big Pharma indictment is a star-studded dramedy directed by “Harry Potter” alum David Yates. Based on a book by journalist Evan Hughes, “Pain Hustlers” features Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, and Andy Garcia in a crime saga revolving around a pharmaceutical start-up whose founder served two years in prison. Reviews have been tepid, but “Hustlers” is now streaming on Netflix following a limited theatrical release.

Other contenders:

When Evil Lurks Review | Thrilling Possession-Horror Entry Turns Shockingly Grotesque
Image
When Evil Lurks is a Spanish-language horror film that tackles the terrifying concept of demonic possession, offering a truly spine-chilling experience. The film features stunning cinematography and authentic production value, creating a visually appealing and immersive atmosphere. The makeup and special effects in When Evil Lurks are incredibly well-done, resulting in grotesque and nightmarish characters that will haunt your dreams.

The new Exorcist film may have been a box-office disappointment, but that doesn't mean demonic-possession movies are dead (no pun intended). From the supernatural series to anime, big-screen scares come in all shapes and sizes, it seems, but if done correctly, films that specifically tackle the crazed notion of demons taking hold of human bodies and minds are perhaps the scariest. Enter When Evil Lurks, a new Spanish-language feature from acclaimed writer-director Demián Rugna (Terrified). It's an excellent new addition to the nightmare-inducing subgenre of cinema, arriving just in time for Halloween.

When Evil Lurks Review
Image
Plot: In a remote village, two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to give birth to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the man but merely succeed in spreading the chaos.

Review: Every year, there are certain movies that come along with the ability to evoke extreme emotions. When Evil Lurks is a movie that made me feel low in a way I wasn’t expecting. Every character has a darkness to them, and there’s no one to root for. So long as you really prepare yourself for a dire hellhole, there’s much to appreciate. There’s an edge to it that few films have these days. I was genuinely shocked at several moments, which rarely ever happens. There’s also a lot of frustration, as this is very much a Movie, and the characters don’t act with much logic. But it’s hard...
