Around this time every year, I tend to enjoy putting on Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. In this household it’s as annual a hallmark of summer as warm breezes, smoking meat on the barbecue, and blasts of chlorine water. However, it is too easy to fall into the trap of thinking Spielberg had the first and last word in the sounds of shrieking at the beach.

In truth, there are many great summertime chillers that make your blood run cold, and the sand turn to ice between your toes, no matter how hot the temperature is. Not a companion piece to Unseen, The Unheard is a new Shudder Original that combine the talents of Jeffrey A. Brown, who previously directed The Beach House and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen whose credits include Crawl and The Ward. It’s the story of Chloe who caught meningitis and spent six months in a coma as a child. She awoke to find that she had lost her hearing.

More importantly, she had lost her mother as well. She disappeared without a trace during those months. She and her father moved to Maine and she’s tried to put it behind her and get on with her life.

Now a young woman she’s returned to Massachusetts and her family’s Wellfleet summer house...

Review: The Unheard is mostly a story of young Chloe getting her hearing back. But it’s a bit more complicated than that. The supernatural twist of her hearing her dead mother through white noise feels like an element we haven’t seen in a while (Michael Keaton’s White Noise anyone?). I was reminded a lot of the film Sound of Metal, since both deal with the process of trying to hear again. Obviously, they’re very different (this one has a lot more murder), but in broad strokes, there are many similarities. One aspect I absolutely loved was Chloe’s clear fear of putting in her earplugs at night. It’s almost like a “What if I never hear again?” moment that she goes through nightly.

There isn’t very much movie infused into this carnival of tropes that, despite giving off the idea that it would at least be an entertaining watch, had me reaching for a pillow to scream into. Shudder’s latest supernatural thriller, “The Unheard,” directed by Jeffrey A. Brown is scary alright. That is, if you take note of the horror you feel that films like this are still inflicting on the unsuspecting audience, and that too by major production houses. But enough about my mountain-climbing ordeal of sitting through two hours’ worth of a dull-as-a-dishwasher narrative with a climax that even someone who has never seen a movie before (somehow) will be able to see coming a mile off. Let’s get on with what goes down in the eerie life of a disabled young adult.

Watching the cosmic, otherworldly dread unfold in Jeffrey A. Brown's The Beach House was one of my favorite viewing experiences of 2020, so I was thrilled to find out that Brown is back with his next feature-length film, The Unheard.

With the supernatural sci-fi horror film now streaming on Shudder, I caught up with Jeffrey in a new video interview to discuss working with the talented Lachlan Watson, his personal connection to the film's story of hearing loss, and how he brought the film's creepy VHS aesthetic to life on screen. As an added bonus for fans of The Beach House, Jeffrey also talks about what his pitch for The Beach House 2 would have looked like!

The festival’s opening night kicked off with the world premiere of The Unheard, which pairs the exciting New England talents of director Jeffrey A. Brown, following up his dynamic debut The Beach House, and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, hot off the success of Alexandre Aja’s Crawl. All three were in attendance for a post-screening Q&a.

Hearing impaired since the age of 8 as a result of meningitis, 20-year-old Chloe Grayden undergoes an experimental gene editing procedure to restore her hearing, which coincides with a homecoming to prepare her family’s empty summer house for sale. The biggest new release for the week is Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which brings various monsters from the long-running property to the big screen beginning on Thursday night, and it’s joined by several brand new horror movies in the coming days.

Up first, BayView Entertainment and Vipco have released Skarecrow: A Curse Never Dies today, which looks to be an ultra-low-budget indie film centered on a killer scarecrow.

In the film, “When the vile James Brothers murder an innocent woman to take over her land, her dying breath places a curse on the family through a scarecrow. Years later, a descendent of the James family has taken his friends to the old cabin for the weekend. They soon find the curse and the scarecrow are still wanting blood.

Before delving further into director Jeffrey A. Brown’s The Unheard, it’s important for me to note that this piece is written from the perspective of a hearing person who has experienced losing and regaining hearing due to illness, but I cannot speak to the Deaf experience. Part of the reason why I was so intrigued about this film was that I could relate to the in-your-bones anxiousness that comes with testing, evaluations, operations, and diagnoses that ultimately amount to the most frustrating phrase to receive in a doctor’s office: “We’ll see.”

Unlike films like Hush or A Quiet Place, The Unheard focuses on a protagonist – portrayed by the effortlessly cool Lachlan Watson (Chucky) – who lost her hearing after a bout of meningitis and seeks to regain partial or full hearing through an experimental operation. Once Chloe has the operation, she starts to hear things – perhaps warnings...

Pic puts AMC’s genre streamer back in business with director Jeffrey A. Brown, whose 2019 debut feature The Beach House proved to be one of its buzziest early titles. His latest will stream exclusively on Shudder starting on March 31st.

The Unheard follows 20-year-old Chloe Grayden (Lachlan Watson), who after undergoing an experimental procedure to restore her damaged hearing, begins to suffer from auditory hallucinations seemingly related to the mysterious disappearance of her mother. The project was developed and produced by Andrew D. Corkin through his Untapped banner that he shares with actor Theo James (White Lotus) who also serves as an EP.

Jack Kilmer has nabbed a leading role opposite Clifton Powell in B.B. King drama “The Thrill Is On,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Kilmer will play Michael, a young drummer who has a chance encounter with blues legend King (Powell), which proves to be the start of an enduring friendship. The upcoming film is based on the true story of producer Michael Zanetis’ own experience with the prolific musician, who died in 2015.

“As an actor and musician, Jack is uniquely qualified to portray our drummer on a mission. His passion for acting and music will ignite a compelling performance,” Zanetis said in a statement to Variety. “We can’t wait to see what magic this dynamic duo will bring to our film!”

Kilmer first broke out in 2013 with his starring role in Gia Coppola’s “Palo Alto,” and has since appeared in “The Stanford Prison Experiment,” “Lords of Chaos” and “Hala.

Something's in the water in Jeffrey A. Brown's directorial debut The Beach House, a beautifully grotesque slow-burn body horror chiller that feels as sleek and contemporary as it does like a slight ode to 50s monster movies and the works of atmospheric horror greats. Unique and individually surreal as this low-budget Shudder feature may be, it's best summed up as John Carpenter's The Fog meets Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, with Lovecraft elements sprinkled in. Such specific comparisons aren't to imply The Beach House isn't something special - Brown proves he can craft moody ecological terror and create a lasting sense of dread. Although the ending leaves room for dissection, The Beach House is a hallucinatory and satisfyingly disturbing shore getaway.

Contained horror has an added bit of resonance right now. After all, many of us are still essentially stuck in our homes. Moreover, eco-horror is rather under-explored as a sub-genre of fright flicks. So, The Beach House enters with a few things in its favor. However, the genre offering, debuting on the streaming platform Shudder today, shows too much restraint for its own good. There are ideas and scares, to be sure, but the balance is off. What should be foreboding and tense instead just becomes relatively boring. The periodic effectiveness of the concept, as well as the lead performance from Liana Liberato, is drowned in poor pacing and an inability to keep the viewer’s attention. Among one of the few new 2020 horror movies we're getting this summer, The Beach House finds Emily and Randall escaping to a family beach house, only to find their off- season trip interrupted by Mitch and Jane Turner, an older couple acquainted with Randall's estranged father. Unexpected bonds form as the couples let loose and enjoy the isolation, but it all takes an ominous turn as increasingly strange environmental phenomena begin to warp their peaceful evening.

Being released during an epidemic lends additional if unintended frisson to “The Beach House,” a cryptic yet reasonably involving thriller in which vacationers find themselves under threat. The nature of that threat remains ambiguous, but in its partially-airborne inescapability, it definitely hits a note of creepy relevance. Writer-director Jeffrey A. Brown’s first feature is neither fish nor fowl in terms of fitting snugly into any given genre slot — perhaps it’s . In any case, it’s skillful enough to satisfy most viewers, if not quite sufficiently original in concept or striking in execution to leave a lasting imprint. Not the most horrific of horror movie titles but The Beach House features two college sweethearts on a getaway to the sea and the aforementioned beach house. Shortly after their arrival they come across some unexpected guests and an environment that doesn’t seem to want them their.

The Beach House somehow manages to feel very familiar, even to the pint that if features quite a few horror clichés, but still highly original too. It ‘borrows’ ideas from some horror and sci-fi classics but brings plenty of its own aswell, which many of the best movies do.

It’s a classic slow-burn style with the first half of the film just introducing its characters (only four ‘proper’ in total) and then setting up...

Brown utilizes in his straightforward but enjoyable debut, The Beach House. Albeit an indie quartet which doesn’t allow for much by way of surprise, it’s an eco-horror film which perfectly blends its creature feature fascinations with formidable dread, resembling something akin to golden era Stephen King, Bradbury or even Lovecraft with its aquatic lurkers at the threshold.…...

Initiated as part of the recent partnership between Fantasia International Film Festival and the Cannes Marché du Film, the event is an offshot of the Frontières International Co-Production Market (which takes place at Montreal’s Fantasia festival in July).

The forum will see industry experts assessing the dozen genre projects from a packaging perspective, analysing finance, marketing and distribution strategies.

Among the selected projects is a feature from Sherlock and Doctor Who director Rachel Talalay, House Of Stairs, and works from producers including Jonathan Bronfman (The Witch), Katie Holly (Love And Friendship) and Phyllis Laing (The Haunting In Connecticut).

The projects originate from eight different countries: Canada, France, Ireland...

9:30-10:20 ComicsPRO "Fresh Start"— Your day at Comic-Con gets...

Anyone familiar with great television comedies of the last decade should be familiar with the main cast of Save The Date. The film stars Lizzy Caplan (Party Down), Martin Starr (Party Down, Freaks and Geeks), Alison Brie (Community), Geoffrey Arend (Super Troopers), and Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), and is one of two Lizzy Caplan films at this year's Sundance to feature a wedding theme - the other being Bachelorette. Despite the fantastic cast, I'm sad to say that this film didn't resonate with me.

The biggest problem with Save The Date is that I didn't feel like it added anything new to this type of story. We've seen it hashed and rehashed tons of times before - a young woman rejects her current life in favor of a spontaneous new relationship - and even this week, I've seen two variations on it with Hello I Must Be Going and The First Time.
