- She was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1946 King's Birthday Honours List for her services to the Merchant Navy during World War II.
- Popular comedienne of stage and screen, initially in music hall and pantomime. First West End success in 'Words and Music' at the age of 27. Broadway debut in 1936 in the revue 'Lights Up!'. Wartime radio work voicing 'Shipmates Ashore' for the Merchant Navy and consequently awarded an MBE. Member of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1963. Still acted on stage at the London Palladium at the age of 87. Best known on screen as Mrs. Butler in 'On the Buses'.
