Jesse Metcalfe Regrets Skipping ‘Entourage’ Audition: “I Blew That One”
Image
Although Jesse Metcalfe made his TV heartthrob debut on ABC‘s Desperate Housewives in 2004, he missed a chance to break out that year on HBO.

The actor recently recounted passing up on “auditioning for Adrian Grenier‘s role” as movie star Vincent Chase in the hit 6x Emmy-winning Doug Ellin series Entourage, which ran for eight seasons from 2004 to 2011 before culminating in a 2015 big screen offshoot.

“I had an audition for Entourage, and I read the pilot episode, and I was like, ‘This is stupid,’ and I didn’t go to the audition,” he admitted to People.

“Obviously, I had no idea what I was talking about,” added Metcalfe. “That ended up being an iconic show that I absolutely love, and definitely wish I was a part of.”

Entourage ultimately starred Grenier as Vinny, a newly-minted Hollywood star who migrates west from Queens, NY with his brother Drama (Kevin Dillon...

‘Starfleet Academy’ Teaser, a ‘Khan’ Audio Series, and Puppets: The Future of ‘Star Trek’ Is Here
Image
The future of “Star Trek” is here and it truly is boldly going to some new and undiscovered places. (Check out our ranking of every “Star Trek” live-action show). The message from Paramount+’s presentation for the franchise July 26 at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H isn’t boundary- and format-pushing alone: It’s clear that they want to package new things with some heavy doses of the familiar — major stars, beloved returning franchise vets, and some cutesy gimmicks.

Take a look at the teaser for “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.”

There are a ton of new faces there for the 32nd Century-set show, as much of the cast is teenage and 20-something newcomers. And it’s set in a time period, post-“Star Trek: Discovery” that allows for all-new storytelling completely unrestrained by preexisting canon. But that’s also a lot of unfamiliar stuff, and audiences can need a little...

The 15 Best Star Trek Parodies And Spoofs Of All Time
Image
When "Star Trek" first hit the airwaves in 1966, no one could predict just how popular the budding franchise would become. It would boldly go where few TV shows have gone before, leading to spinoffs, movies, and all sorts of collectible paraphernalia. It's pretty impressive, especially since the original "Star Trek" series was cancelled after just three seasons due to low ratings. However, it tapped into something in the zeitgeist and couldn't stay down for long, making it a prime target for a litany of parodies.

Between William Shatner's hammy acting style for Captain Kirk and so many fun, unique alien species, there's plenty for jokesters to poke fun at. And of course, the best spoofs are those where it's clear the creators have a deep respect for all "Star Trek" has done. Even if you wouldn't consider yourself a hardcore Trekkie, you'll probably find something to enjoy in these movies,...

Jonathan Frakes Regrets Star Trek: Tng’s ‘Gay Episode’ For Not Giving Riker a Male Love Interest
Image
Jonathan Frakes mentioned that the Star Trek: Tng season 5 episode ‘The Outcast’ did not go far enough in terms of queer representation. The episode saw Frakes, who played William Riker in the show, grow close to a pilot named Soren, who belongs to the genderless J’naii species. Intended to throw light on gender fluidity, the episode has not stood the test of time.

Many have criticized the episode’s look at queerness and gender fluidity as elementary. The fact that Soren was played by a cis-het woman and Frakes is a cis-het man shows that the revolutionary depiction was just performative at best (via Captain’s Logs). Jonathan Frakes himself criticized it.

I didn’t think they were gutsy enough to take it where they should have…Soren should have been more obviously male.

While the show tried to be more inclusive back in the ‘90s, many considered this...

Voyager’s Tim Russ Doesn’t Think a Black Vulcan Is a Feat for Star Trek
Image
Tim Russ, who played the Vulcan second officer in Star Trek: Voyager, revealed that he did not think his casting was as revolutionary for the franchise as some of the other main characters who were Black. Russ’ character was the first Vulcan character who was Black, and while he had previously played many roles in the franchise, he was known for this.

The Star Trek franchise became known for pushing boundaries in terms of pushing back against social evils like racism and sexism within the Federation by casting actors such as Nichelle Nichols and George Takei in main roles. However, despite being a Vulcan who was Black, Tim Russ believed that it was not a big achievement (via Trek Movie).

For me, it didn’t factor into it because they already had everybody from Nichelle Nichols to Avery Brooks on DS9, the commander of that station. And then a female captain on our show,...

How Star Trek Legend Leonard Nimoy Ended Up In The Big Bang Theory
Image
"The Big Bang Theory" had some excellent guest stars over the years, and thanks to the main characters' pop culture interests, quite a few of them were major "Star Trek" names. Wil Wheaton's turn as a malignant version of himself is a recurring character worthy of a spin-off, while folks like George Takei and William Shatner also have fun "The Big Bang Theory" cameos in their résumés. However, there's one "Star Trek" titan who's largely absent: Leonard Nimoy. This is explained in-universe by Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) being such a Spock mega-fan that he has a restraining order from the actor.

Entertainingly, Nimoy's absence is almost a character in its own right. Sheldon's ultimate idol was referenced on the show several times, and Nimoy ended up making a fitting cameo in "The Big Bang Theory" season 5, episode 20 ("The Transporter Malfunction") ... by voicing Sheldon's Spock action figure. In a 2012 interview with Collider,...

3 surprising facts even die-hard Star Trek fans don't know
Image
Star Trek is one of those shows that has permeated pop culture in almost every way possible. It is a pop culture juggernaut, referenced in everything from popular sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory and sketch series like Saturday Night Live. Even those who don’t watch any of the Star Trek series can name a few characters.

Die-hard fans of the show pride themselves on their Star Trek knowledge and make trivia their business. Character and planet names, guest stars—if you ask the question, they can answer it; however, the lore of Star Trek runs so deeply that even devoted fans probably don’t know these three facts about the multi-series franchise.

1. George Takei approached Gene Roddenberry about an Lgbtqa+ storyline

During Star Trek’s second season, George Takei approached the show’s creator, Gene Roddenberry, about the possibility of an episode that highlighted a same-sex relationship. At the time,...

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was almost a very different film!
Image
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, or “the one with the whales,” as it’s sometimes called, is one of the more popular films in the original series cinematic universe. Fans enjoy its message of ecological conservation, its lighthearted moments, and who doesn’t get emotional about that ending?

While The Voyage Home is a fan favorite, it was nearly a very different film. Cast changes, character arcs, and filming woes radically changed during pre-production and filming, so let’s take a look at how the original vision and the version released in cinemas on November 6th, 1986.

The doctor who almost wasn’t

One of the main storylines of The Voyage Home is the plight of Dr. Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks) and her efforts to save two humpback whales that live in captivity at the cetacean institute where she works. Star Trek’s Walter Koenig Wishes The Original Series’ Supporting Cast Were Treated As “More Than Just Furniture”
Walter Koenig
Walter Koenig wishes supporting characters like Mr. Chekov were given more to do in Star Trek: The Original Series. Koenig portrayed Ensign Pavel Chekov in Star Trek: The Original Series seasons 2 and 3, and in seven Star Trek movies. Walter now reviews episodes of classic 1960s Star Trek, providing his invaluable memories and insight on The 7th Rule podcast hosted by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk.

DuringThe 7th Rule's review of Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, episode 15, "The Trouble With Tribbles," Walter Koenig highlighted the winning performances of Tos' supporting characters, especially James Doohan as Scotty and Nichelle Nichols as Lt. This Trek-loving actor has multiple links to the Star Trek universe!
Image
When Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country hit theaters in 1991, fans of George Takei and his character, the venerable Hikaru Sulu, thrilled to the sight of him with a captain’s rank and command of the USS Excelsior.

As events of the film unfold, Uhura and Chekov refuse to leave the imprisoned Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy on Rura Penthe and send a false report to Starfleet that Enterprise’s backup systems have failed. Starfleet sends a message to Captain Sulu, and the appearance of the communications officer who delivers this message probably made more than one moviegoer blink in surprise! Was that...?

Yes! The unnamed officer was, in fact, Christian Slater!

How Slater got his cameo

Slater, of course, was no stranger to the big screen by the time he received his much-coveted Star Trek cameo. He’d starred in a variety of movies like Gleaming the Cube, Heathers,...

12 Years Later, the Steamy Star Trek Scene J.J. Abrams Had to Apologize for Remains the Only Memorable Thing About the Movie
Image
J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot started well with the 2009 film starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. However, it quickly lost momentum with Into Darkness, and after Beyond, the Kelvin timeline seems to be stuck in limbo. The filmmaker has admitted to many mistakes on his part in Into Darkness, but one scene is living on in infamy.

Abrams’ decision to show actress Alice Eve in nothing but her undergarments in one scene in the movie seems to be the most memorable (in a bad way) moment from Into Darkness. The filmmaker and writer Damon Lindelof apologized for it after fans criticized them for using female characters only for the male gaze.

More Than A Decade After Roasting William Shatner, Patton Oswalt Is Appearing in ‘Star Trek’
Image
Over the course of his long career, Patton Oswalt has voiced a gourmet rat, played an unconvincing Elton John impersonator and beefed with Kevin from The Office in the short-lived, soon-to-be an obscure Trivial Pursuit answer, Suits LA.

And now the beloved comedian is boldly going where a number of people have already gone before (to be totally honest): the Star Trek franchise.

As Parade pointed out, Oswalt shows up very briefly at the tail end of the recently released trailer for Season Three of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, seemingly playing a Vulcan who gets razzed by a high-fiving Mr. Spock.

Star Trek actually has a long history of casting comedians. Tig Notaro had a recurring role on Star Trek: Discovery, Sarah Silverman guest starred in a two-part episode of Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: The Next Generation once suggested that a holographic recreation of Joe Piscopo...

“My attitude toward homosexuality has changed”: Gene Roddenberry on the Portrayal of Sexuality in Star Trek
Image
The Star Trek universe was launched when the original series premiered on television in 1966. The series pushed the boundaries of sci-fi storytelling with its progressive themes and ideas. However, for all its futuristic ideas and progressivism, the series has had a troubled history with sexuality.

Since the original series, several of the franchise’s installments have included cast and crew who identify as a part of the LGBTQ+ community. Even after franchise creator Gene Roddenberry supported a more nuanced depiction of sexuality, it took a long time for an identifiable gay character to appear. Here is what Roddenberry had to say about Star Trek‘s depiction of sexuality.

Gene Roddenberry discussed sexuality in the Star Trek universe

Gene Roddenberry took network television in a bold new direction with Star Trek: The Original Series, which started airing in 1966. The series launched the careers of several stars, and its syndication success led...

Remembering the day Star Trek legend William Shatner crooned "My Way" to Star Wars creator George Lucas
Image
Attendees at the 33rd annual American Film Institute Life Achievement Award ceremony honoring Star Wars creator George Lucas got a surprise from the final frontier when, of all people, William Shatner, Star Trek’s original Captain Kirk, arrived on stage to open the festivities. It happened on June 9, 2005, and it remains an indelible moment of entertainment galaxies colliding.

Shatner basked in the moment, giving a remarkably Shatner-ian performance. He hammed it up, smiled broadly, joked about his hair (comparing it to the honoree’s iconic follicles), and, yes, sang. Upon Shatner's introduction, the faces of Lucas, Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Chewbacca all expressed shock. Shatner then elicited chuckles with his opening line: “Star Trek changed everything.” He then cracked, “Aren’t these conventions wonderful?” And from there, after two stormtroopers nearly carried him off the stage, Shatner engaged in his signature talk-sing warbling, delivering a...

Star Trek's Walter Koenig Explains Exiting the Original Series in Season 3: 'Nobody Really Cared’
Image
The original 1966 Star Trektelevision series is now a beloved classic that spawned several generations of fans and multiple TV shows, but the series was ultimately canceled after three seasons. Star Trek, set in the 23rd century, followed the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, led by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), and his faithful crew, which included Pavel Chekov, played by Walter Koenig in the second and third seasons of Star Trek.

Koenig has now revealed that he left the cast of Star Trek during its third season, but “nobody really cared” because everyone involved with the show thought it would be canceled. Per Screen Rant, Koenig, appearing in an episode of The 7th Rulepodcast hosted by Ryan T. Husk and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine alum Cirroc Lofton, explained his absence in the third season of Star Trek, saying he left in part to preserve his “dignity.

“Nobody Really Cared”: Walter Koenig Says He Took A Break From Star Trek: The Original Series In Season 3
Image
Walter Koenig reveals he took a break from filmingStar Trek: The Original Series in season 3, but that "nobody really cared" since everyone in the production felt the show would be canceled. Koenig portrayed Ensign Pavel Chekov in Star Trek: The Original Series seasons 2 and 3, and he reprised Chekov in seven Star Trek movies, including Star Trek Generations. In Star Trek: Picard season 3, Koenig voiced Chekov's descendant, Anton Chekov, President of the United Federation of Planets.

Every month on The 7th Rule podcast, Walter Koenig joins hosts Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk to review episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series. During their rundown of the classic Star Trek season 2 episode, "The Trouble With Tribbles," Walter explained why he left the show during season 3, which was Star Trek: Tos' final season. Read Koenig's quote and watch The 7th Rule video below:

I left Star Trek in the third season. I left the show.

A Forgotten Star Trek Spin-Off Is Still Worth Revisiting 5 Decades Later
Image
Sometimes, even the most hardcore fanboys need to be reminded that certain facets of their own beloved sci-fi franchise actually exist. "Star Wars" fans, for instance, often need to be reminded that there are 16 movies in the series, and not just the nine that have Roman numerals in them.

(To quickly provide a list, the 16 movies include "Star Wars," "The Star Wars Holiday Special," "The Empire Strikes Back," "Return of the Jedi," "Caravan of Courage," "The Battle for Endor," "The Great Heep," "The Phantom Menace," "Attack of the Clones," "Revenge of the Sith," "The Clone Wars," "The Force Awakens," "Rogue One," "The Last Jedi," "Solo," and "The Rise of Skywalker." 16. I will hear no further arguments.)

Likewise, many Trekkies have to be reminded about the sheer volume of TV shows that the franchise has produced since its inception in 1966. As of this writing, there have been 13 "Star Trek" TV shows,...

Every Major Star Trek Actor Who Had A Cameo In The Simpsons
Image
Because Matt Groening's animated sitcom "The Simpsons" has become such a ubiquitous part of popular culture, it often serves as a remix station for everything that happens to be floating through the mass consciousness. The makers of "The Simpsons" have always had a keen eye toward TV and film history, sometimes drawing from their own childhood experiences as media-overconsumers, and sometimes just because they pay attention to what's currently out there. The Simpsons themselves are also TV addicts, so it makes sense that TV shows of yore should occasionally leak into their everyday lives. It's as if a vital barrier between TV and reality had broken down on "The Simpsons," and classic TV had slowly become a part of their lives. This is no more evident than in the "Simpsons" Halloween specials, which put the characters in classic "Twilight Zone" episodes.

And then, of course, there's "Star Trek." The...

Actor Spotlight: George Takei
Image
From humble beginnings to acting, movies, and community leadership, George Takei, born on April 20th, 1937, has worn many hats in his long career. He’s one of our last 3 surviving bridge crew members (along with Walter Koenig and William Shatner), so let’s look at his impressive career and the importance of his presence on Star Trek.

A chaotic youth

Born Hosato Takei, the actor’s father named him George, as George VI’s coronation occurred shortly after Takei’s birth. In 1942, the Takei family was thrown into chaos because of fear and mistrust of Asian people as World War II escalated. They lived in internment camps in Arkansas and California, then lived in poverty in Skid Row, in Los Angeles, after the war ended.

An acting career blooms

As a young man, Takei attended college at Berkley, the University of California at Los Angeles, and even abroad at schools in England and Tokyo.

Prolific Star Trek author Peter David dies at 68
Image
Peter David, the beloved and prolific author, whose work included many Star Trek novels and comic books, has died at the age of 68, according to a statement from his wife posted on social media. Kathleen O’Shea David wrote, “Since it is out there. Peter David passed away last night. We are devastated. More when I can write about it.” Based on the timing of the note, David passed away on Sunday, May 23.

David penned more than 75 Star Trek adventures over the years. His books included titles in The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, New Frontier, Starfleet Academy, and Mirror Universe series, including Imzadi, a Tng novel widely considered one of the best, if not the best, of any Star Trek tales ever told, and several Tng books focused on Q, the audionovel versions of which Q actor John de Lancie provided the narrations. Raindance Unveils Record Lineup for 33rd Edition, Highlighting Global Storytelling
BAFTA Film Awards
London’s Raindance Film Festival will present its most expansive program since the pandemic, screening 70 narrative and documentary features June 18–27 at Vue Piccadilly. That marks a 90 percent increase over last year’s roster. The event opens with Christopher M. Anthony’s boxing drama Heavyweight and concludes with Camilla Guttner’s student-focused drama The Academy.

Festival founder Elliot Grove celebrated the broad selection: “Raindance has built a reputation for championing films that might be overlooked elsewhere. Launching with a British debut about a wildcard boxer feels entirely fitting.”

Opening Night: Heavyweight

Heavyweight follows a rising fighter (Nicholas Pinnock) whose chance in the ring coincides with personal struggles outside it. Co-starring Jason Isaacs and Jordon Bolger, the film had its world premiere at Raindance. Anthony penned the screenplay to explore ambition and sacrifice, shooting on location in UK gyms and community centres.

Closing Night: The Academy

Boxing Drama ‘Heavyweight’ Opens Raindance, Art School Tale ‘The Academy’ Closes 33rd Edition
Image
London’s Raindance Film Festival will kick off its 33rd edition with the world premiere of Christopher M. Anthony’s boxing drama “Heavyweight,” starring Nicholas Pinnock, Jason Isaacs, and Jordan Bolger.

The festival will close with the international premiere of Camilla Guttner’s art school drama “The Academy,” featuring Maja Bons as a student navigating the ruthless terrain of the art world.

“Raindance is always one to punch above its weight, so it’s appropriate that the festival’s 33rd edition should open with the world premiere of a British debut feature about a wildcard boxer,” said Raindance founder Elliot Grove.

The festival, running June 18-27 at Vue Piccadilly, marks a significant comeback with 70 narrative and documentary features — a 90% increase from last year and the first time since 2019 the festival will present so many films.

International competition highlights include “Dream!”, a Christmas-set musical following a young girl’s magical journey...

Before Star Trek, Leonard Nimoy And William Shatner Appeared In This Classic Series
Image
In the "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." episode "The Project Strigas Affair", it's explained that Laslo Kurasov (Werner Klemperer from "Hogan's Heroes"), a Khrushchev-like diplomat from an unnamed Balkan state, is aiming to disrupt arms talks between the United States and nations behind the Iron Curtain. Agents Napoleon Solo (Robert Wagner) and Illya (David McCallum) are tasked with removing Laslo from his position without assassinating him (which would make him into a martyr). They instead concoct a very, very elaborate plan to embarrass Laslo and discredit him in the public eye.

The plan begins with an agent from U.N.C.L.E. playacting his own death-by-stabbing in front of Laslo, yelling the cryptic (and made-up) phrase "Strigas YL893." This startles Laslo and causes him to assign his aide, a man named Vladeck (Leonard Nimoy), to investigate what that codeword might mean. U.N.C.L.E. secretly feeds Vladeck some fake information,...

The real U.S.S. Enterprise is one step closer to being dismantled
Image
Captain Kirk surely cried -- at least off-screen -- when he watched the U.S.S. Enterprise disintegrate following his self-destruct order in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Though moviegoers saw no tears from Kirk, it pained him, as his line, “My God, Bones, what have I done?” suggests. Even if Kirk didn’t cry, countless fans did. And now a real-world U.S.S. Enterprise is nearing the end of its storied journey… or, better phrased, nearing the next chapter in its demise.

The U.S.S. Enterprise (Cvn-65), a proud United States Navy aircraft carrier, took three years to build (1958-1961) and remained in operation until 2012, when she was inactivated, and 2017, when she was officially decommissioned. Affectionately called “Big E,” the Enterprise holds the distinction of being the Navy’s first nuclear-powered ship, and she was involved in everything from the Cuban Missile Crisis, Operation Sea Orbit,...

Pavel Chekov: character assassination and underutilization in the Star Trek Tos universe
Image
When the second season of Star Trek premiered in 1967, viewers got their first glimpse of a new and fresh face at the navigation station aboard Enterprise: Ensign Pavel A. Chekov. Roddenberry lore tells us that he wanted to bring a Russian onboard as a nod to the country’s achievements in the Space Race; however, a deeper look into the casting reveals much about why Chekov’s character was underutilized and often assassinated or abused during the series and in the original cast movie universe.

Casting a space Monkee

When The Monkees premiered on NBC in 1966, they quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. Young people embraced them and the television show, and Gene Roddenberry took notice of this popularity. As a gambit to boost ratings and bring in some younger viewers to Star Trek, he wanted a new cast member who was young and good-looking, a Davy Jones type, if you will.

George Takei's Star Trek Legacy Was Almost Ruined By A John Wayne Movie
Image
Prior to landing the gig playing helmsman Hikaru Sulu on "Star Trek," actor George Takei landed a few dubbing jobs that led to him providing the English-language voices for Japanese films like "Rodan" and "Godzilla Raids Again." His first credited on-scree film role was for the 1958 adventure flick "Ice Palace" with Richard Burton. Throughout the early 1960s, he continued to play small roles in large Hollywood film productions, although his career began to thrive on television, with Takei landing guest spots on some of the hottest shows of the day. Indeed, he wound up being on episodes of "Perry Mason," "The Twilight Zone," "My Three Sons," "Death Valley Days," and "I Spy."

"Star Trek" was a three-year supporting gig for Takei, and it initially wasn't a hugely successful show, ending in 1969. After that, Takei merely turned back to other one-shot appearances on shows like "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" and "Ironside.

The Worst Thing Each Main Character Of Star Trek: The Original Series Has Done
Image
The main crew of the original "Star Trek" are not, by most stretches of the imagination, anti-heroes. They're the good guys, traveling through space in the service of exploration and peace. They're a diverse bunch who all get along...usually. If Starfleet were real, James Tiberius Kirk and his crew would be in its heroes hall of fame. Nobody, however, is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes, and when those mistakes are made at the helm of a starship with energy weapons and torpedoes, things can go really bad.

All the main characters of "Star Trek" have made terrible mistakes. Often, it was the result of possession or madness. Other times, it was a severe lapse in judgment, or a miscalculation about where exactly the needs of the many and the needs of the one fall on the scale of probabilities. Hikaru Sulu, Pavel Chekov, Nyota Uhura, Montgomery Scott, Leonard McCoy, Spock son of Sarek,...
