A lead and character player in such pre-Code films as Sin novedad en el frente (1930), The Miracle Man (1932) and I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932), among others.

Character actor with stage experience from 1913, who during the early talkies specialised in tough characters, particularly gangster films. His most notable performance was as the corrupt political boss Mort Bradstreet in the 1930 film 'The Czar of Broadway'.

Not to be confused with the American silent film director and playwright John Griffith Wray who worked for Thomas Ince in the 1920s.

Was in two Oscar Best Picture winners Sin novedad en el frente (1930) and Lo que el viento se llevó (1939), and three other nominees I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932), El secreto de vivir (1936), and Boys Town (1938).
