The 2025 Emmys have arrived, and television’s biggest celebration kicks off with the Creative Arts Emmys to be presented this weekend, honoring the year’s best in artistic and technical achievement. Last year, Shōgun dominated the competition with 14 Creative Arts victories before adding four more at the Primetime ceremony, setting a new all-time record with 18 total wins, including Best Drama Series.

This year, the Apple TV+ drama Severance leads all series with 27 nominations, followed by The Studio at the top of the comedy race with 23, and The Penguin dominating the limited-series field with 24.

The ABC late-night host returned from his summer off on Tuesday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and he addressed months worth of news, including some outlets taking his reveal that he has secured Italian citizenship to mean that he was leaving the U.S. for Europe and seeing that as an “escape plan.”

After airing some Fox News and Newsmax clips showing how the “Maga gang went nuts” over the Italian citizenship and presumed move, Kimmel clarified, “I’m not moving to Italy. I never said that. This is where I live. This is my country. I have no intention of running away from it, especially because of Donald Trump,” continued the late-night host. “Let me tell you something, I would move into Mar-a-Lago if I could, just to drive him insane.”

The Television Academy has announced the presenters for the 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, including “The Bear” star Jamie Lee Curtis, “The Pitt” star Noah Wyle and director Ron Howard.

The annual awards show will span two consecutive nights this year on Saturday, Sept. 6 and Sunday, Sept. 7. The ceremony will be held at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles. Anthropic has settled a lawsuit from authors, who accused the Amazon-backed company of illegally downloading and copying their books to teach its AI system, in among the first deals reached by creators over novel legal issues raised by the technology.

“This historic settlement will benefit all class members,” says Justin Nelson, a lawyer for the authors. “We look forward to announcing details of the settlement in the coming weeks.”

Lawyers for both sides on Tuesday informed the court of the deal, which was reached earlier this month through mediation.

The thrust of the case — and dozens of others involving AI companies — was set to be decided by one question: Are AI companies covered by fair use, the legal doctrine in intellectual property law that allows creators to build upon copyrighted works without a license? On that issue, a judge found in June that Anthropic is on solid legal ground, at least with respect to training.

In her recent “PostMortem” tour and Netflix special, Sarah Silverman took a detour from her signature no-holds-barred humor and dove into more personal, poignant territory — opening up about the death of her dad and stepmother, nine days apart. The laughs were still there, but they came wrapped in something heartfelt and left audiences laughing through their tears.

Nominated for two Primetime Emmys — variety special and writing — “PostMortem” mostly focuses on Silverman’s dad, known to friends affectionately as Schleppy. Through smiles, she tells stories about him and her stepmom, Janice, about their lives when they were healthy and about their last days, sharing just how funny they were.

“It’s so odd, you know, because I now have no parents,” she says in the special. “And there is no age where you are ready to have no parents.”

Looking back on those early performances, she admits they were tough — even draining.

Despite devoting her life to comedy since dropping out of college in 1990, Sarah Silverman had only released four stand-up specials until this May. But, in 2023, her father and stepmother died just days apart, prompting some unexpected material and an uncharacteristic bout of productivity. Enter PostMortem, her 2025 special that finds her very much grieving but as funny and crass as ever. Nominated for both outstanding writing for a variety special and outstanding variety special (prerecorded), she hopped on Zoom in early August to talk about mortality, video games and her irrational fear of running out of jokes.

Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has revealed that he obtained Italian citizenship as Donald Trump’s second presidential term is “so bad” that it may motivate him to leave the country.

Kimmel has long been a vocal critic of the president and recently appeared on his ex-girlfriend Sarah Silverman’s podcast, a conversation during which the two lamented the political state of the country. Silverman noted that many people, including celebrities, are seeking citizenship in other countries.

Silverman commented, “A lot of people I know are thinking about, where are they going to get citizenship?”

The nominees for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning, and the HBO limited series The Penguin earned a total of 24 Emmy nominations for the 2025 awards. 

While a substantial amount of the 24 come from the technical and craft categories, the major awards the show is up for includes a top-tier nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

The show's cast received major acclaim as well, with Colin Farrell nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor and Cristin Milioti for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Additionally, Deirdre O'Connell was honored with a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

Netflix’s 120 Emmy nominations Tuesday came from 44 titles across 14 genres and includes series as divergent as Adolescence and America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

The streamer also helped 11 stars land their first Emmy nominations.

Chief content officer Bela Bajaria says she is pleased with both of these things as she celebrates her company’s achievements out of this morning’s reveals.

“We’re very pleased because they come from 44 titles and 14 different program categories,” she told Deadline. “I’ll tell you why that’s important and there’s a lot of happy people in and outside the building is because we’re always aiming for excellence in television but across a lot of different [genres]. We know that audiences love drama and comedy but they also love unscripted and docs and animation and limited series, stand-up and TV movies so to be recognized in all of those different categories is really rewarding.

On one level, the biggest surprise about Tuesday morning’s Emmy nominations was how unsurprising they were — indeed, my final pre-noms forecast correctly projected, of the eventual nominees for best series, seven of eight dramas, eight of eight comedies and five of five limited/anthology series. But when you put them under a microscope, I think they tell an interesting story about today’s TV landscape.

Nate Bargatze’s job as the host for the 2025 Emmys just got a little more tense after he turned comedy gold into two nominations for Your Friend, Nate Bargatze.

He will contend in outstanding variety special category for his third stand-up show on Netflix, as well as for best writing in a variety special. The family friendly comic in April was unveiled as the host for the 77th Emmy Awards ceremony in September.
