Jimmy Kimmel may have Italian citizenship, but he’s not leaving the U.S.
The ABC late-night host returned from his summer off on Tuesday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and he addressed months worth of news, including some outlets taking his reveal that he has secured Italian citizenship to mean that he was leaving the U.S. for Europe and seeing that as an “escape plan.”
After airing some Fox News and Newsmax clips showing how the “Maga gang went nuts” over the Italian citizenship and presumed move, Kimmel clarified, “I’m not moving to Italy. I never said that. This is where I live. This is my country. I have no intention of running away from it, especially because of Donald Trump,” continued the late-night host. “Let me tell you something, I would move into Mar-a-Lago if I could, just to drive him insane.”
He also explained that his Italian citizenship was long-in-the-works,...

Anthropic has settled a lawsuit from authors, who accused the Amazon-backed company of illegally downloading and copying their books to teach its AI system, in among the first deals reached by creators over novel legal issues raised by the technology.
“This historic settlement will benefit all class members,” says Justin Nelson, a lawyer for the authors. “We look forward to announcing details of the settlement in the coming weeks.”
Lawyers for both sides on Tuesday informed the court of the deal, which was reached earlier this month through mediation.
The thrust of the case — and dozens of others involving AI companies — was set to be decided by one question: Are AI companies covered by fair use, the legal doctrine in intellectual property law that allows creators to build upon copyrighted works without a license? On that issue, a judge found in June that Anthropic is on solid legal ground, at least with respect to training.

In her recent “PostMortem” tour and Netflix special, Sarah Silverman took a detour from her signature no-holds-barred humor and dove into more personal, poignant territory — opening up about the death of her dad and stepmother, nine days apart. The laughs were still there, but they came wrapped in something heartfelt and left audiences laughing through their tears.
Nominated for two Primetime Emmys — variety special and writing — “PostMortem” mostly focuses on Silverman’s dad, known to friends affectionately as Schleppy. Through smiles, she tells stories about him and her stepmom, Janice, about their lives when they were healthy and about their last days, sharing just how funny they were.
“It’s so odd, you know, because I now have no parents,” she says in the special. “And there is no age where you are ready to have no parents.”
Looking back on those early performances, she admits they were tough — even draining.

Despite devoting her life to comedy since dropping out of college in 1990, Sarah Silverman had only released four stand-up specials until this May. But, in 2023, her father and stepmother died just days apart, prompting some unexpected material and an uncharacteristic bout of productivity. Enter PostMortem, her 2025 special that finds her very much grieving but as funny and crass as ever. Nominated for both outstanding writing for a variety special and outstanding variety special (prerecorded), she hopped on Zoom in early August to talk about mortality, video games and her irrational fear of running out of jokes.
You’re nominated for writing, but it feels worth addressing that this is your first time directing. Why now?
It’s always been looming over me. I have a short I’ve been working on, so I wanted to dip my toe in the water. And, listen, as a first thing to direct, it’s not hard.

“A talent agent is sitting in his office and in walks a family — a father, a mother and two kids. The father says to the agent, ‘Have I got an act for you!’”
So begins one of the most notoriously dirty jokes in the history of comedy. The specifics can vary, but the basic idea is always the same: The family walks in and offers up their act. The agent asks what the act is and one of them, usually the father, goes on to explain their routine, which involves the most shocking and depraved sex acts possible between members of the family, including but not limited to: urination, defecation, vomiting and bestiality.
The depraved part of the joke can last just a couple of minutes or upwards of an hour, and the contents change depending upon the imagination and endurance of the joke-teller. The ending, however, is always the...

Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson have both led divisive careers, and they were in a movie together relatively recently. Lopez is known for starring in some notoriously terrible films, countless which hold rotten Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, including Gigli, which is often regarded as one of the worst movies of all time.
At the same time, Lopez has been in several titles that have proved her critics wrong, legitimizing her as an actress. This was witnessed in the 2019 movie Hustlers, which really shows off Lopez's dramatic chops. Wilson has had a similarly divided career. For every hit like The Royal Tenenbaums, he has also made something like Are You Here or Marmaduke.
This has created a highly inconsistent reputation for the Midnight in Paris actor. Likewise, the recent romantic comedy collaboration between Lopez and Wilson split many critics. Now, a few years later, the movie is finding renewed success on streaming.

It seems as though Hollywood stars will do almost anything to win major acting awards that in no way resemble golden popcorn buckets.
In addition to going on media blitzes, attending gala events and straight-up suck-uping to voting bodies, one potentially unsung method of achieving awards recognition just might be getting shitcanned by Lorne Michaels.
Among the most recent crop of Emmy nominees is the great Jenny Slate, who was recognized for her work in Dying for Sex in the “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie” category. Slate was famously let go after just one season on SNL (but not for dropping the F-bomb that one time as some folks mistakenly believe).
Obviously Slate is nominated because of her exceptional acting, but we can’t help but notice that she isn’t the first person who’s gotten recognition from the Television Academy after being fired by SNL.

Over his decades-long career, Jack Black has starred in countless beloved movies. He helped to reboot a 90s classic with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, nearly got blown up in Tropic Thunder, made Lucha libre mainstream with Nacho Libre, and even found the Pick of Destiny in the appropriately titled Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. But, among Black's many movies, the actor and musician has one standout favorite. We know that audiences love drama and comedy but they also love unscripted and docs and animation and limited series, stand-up and TV movies so to be recognized in all of those different categories is really rewarding.

We know that audiences love drama and comedy but they also love unscripted and docs and animation and limited series, stand-up and TV movies so to be recognized in all of those different categories is really rewarding.

On one level, the biggest surprise about Tuesday morning’s Emmy nominations was how unsurprising they were — indeed, my final pre-noms forecast correctly projected, of the eventual nominees for best series, seven of eight dramas, eight of eight comedies and five of five limited/anthology series. But when you put them under a microscope, I think they tell an interesting story about today’s TV landscape.
HBO/HBO Max collected a platforms-leading and company-best 142 noms. Meanwhile, the biggest hauls for individual shows all traced back to Apple TV+ (which had its best year yet with 81 overall noms) and HBO/HBO Max, with the leaderboard topped by Apple’s sophomore drama Severance (27, up from 14 for its prior season), HBO’s limited series The Penguin (24), Apple’s rookie comedy The Studio (23, matching the comedy series record set last year by FX’s The Bear), the third installment of HBO’s drama franchise...

Nate Bargatze’s job as the host for the 2025 Emmys just got a little more tense after he turned comedy gold into two nominations for Your Friend, Nate Bargatze.
He will contend in outstanding variety special category for his third stand-up show on Netflix, as well as for best writing in a variety special. The family friendly comic in April was unveiled as the host for the 77th Emmy Awards ceremony in September.
Bargatze will face stiff competition in the outstanding variety special category at the Emmys with four other Netflix specials — Adam Sandler: Love You, Ali Wong: Single Lady, Sarah Silverman: Postmortem, Conan O’Brien: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize For American Humor – as well as Hulu’s Bill Burr: Drop Dead Years.
Bargatze is known for his deadpan style of family friendly stand-up comedy. He has multiple stand-up specials and hosts The Nateland Podcast.

After many weeks of trying, A Minecraft Movie is yet to be dethroned from the summit of the 2025 US box office, with Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, somehow still $9 million behind. With the gap slowly closing, a slowing in its theatrical run puts Lilo & Stitch's efforts to reach the top in jeopardy, especially following a recent weekend performance that saw just $2.7 million returned from the fewest number of theaters nationwide to date.
However, never ones to be disheartened, there is still plenty for Lilo, Stitch, and their many fans to rejoice about. Following the aforementioned weekend haul, the live-action remake has now accumulated a global box office total of $994.9 million, as the billion-dollar mark edges ever closer. Split between a domestic haul of $414.6 million and a further $580.3 million from overseas markets, Lilo & Stitch is now one of the 30 highest-grossing movies in Disney's box office history worldwide,...

Exclusive: Random House has taken the North American rights off the table to I’m on the Moon, the debut comedy memoir by former Late Show and Late Night With David Letterman producer Daniel Kellison.
The deal was sealed ahead of a scheduled auction that had already attracted offers from several major publishers.
Originally titled The Fuck-Up—a name that reflected Kellison’s own self-perception during those formative years—the memoir now goes by I’m on the Moon. It chronicles Kellison’s darkly funny and wildly unlikely journey from being raised by a four-time-divorced Vermont hippie mom and a one-eyed babysitter, to taking a hit of acid and deciding, with sudden clarity, that he had to work for his hero, David Letterman. “From the ominous glow of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant to the bright lights of 30 Rock…”

Much can be said about Pixar's reputation after the release of "Toy Story 3." The threequel capped off the animation studio's unprecedented hot streak of critical success from 1995 to 2010, which came to a definitive end thanks to the widely-blasted "Cars 2" a year later. "Brave" was the follow-up to the black sheep of Pixar's filmography at the time, and although it was definitely an improvement, critics and audiences still felt the film fell short of Pixar's previous work ... though that didn't stop it from winning Best Animated Feature at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013.
Much of the lukewarm critical reception to "Brave" can be attributed to the film's production. The movie was originally conceived by co-writer/director Brenda Chapman, who was influenced by fairy tales in the vein of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm. The project, originally titled "The Bear and the Bow," was also inspired by...

A federal judge ruled that Meta’s unauthorized use of copyrighted works from Sarah Silverman and other authors to train generative AI models is a “fair use,” but warned that the practice may in many circumstances be illegal.
The ruling from U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria is the second this week to determine that a major AI firm’s use of copyrighted works to train models falls within the “fair use” standard, a legal defense in copyright infringement cases.
Read the Sarah Silverman-Meta AI ruling.
Earlier this week, another federal judge ruled in favor of Anthropic over its use of copyrighted books to train its Claude model. But the judge ordered a trial on the question of whether the company still was liable for infringement as it had downloaded millions of pirated books in digital form off the internet.

In most circumstances, it’s illegal for companies to use copyright-protected material to train their AI systems without permission or payment, a court said, while finding that a lawsuit from Sarah Silverman against Meta doesn’t present one of those cases.
U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria on Wednesday sided with Meta on the novel legal question of whether AI companies are covered by fair use, the legal doctrine in intellectual property law that allows creators to build upon copyrighted works absent licenses. It’s the second decision this week finding in favor of an AI firm on the issue, with another federal judge on Monday ruling against authors in a separate lawsuit by concluding that Anthropic is on solid legal ground over the legality of training.

Actress Carrie Coon recently talked about how she handles aging in Hollywood and how it affects the roles she gets. At 44 years old, Coon says she often ends up playing older or more serious characters because she chooses not to use Botox. She pointed to her parts in shows like The Gilded Age and The White Lotus as examples.
Coon shared that people see her as thoughtful and smart, with a deeper voice. She said, “I don’t have Botox, so I tend to play older than I am. And so I’ve always had a gravitas or some authority.” Botox, which many actors use to reduce wrinkles, is something she decided to avoid.
She hopes that younger actors won’t feel forced to follow this trend of cosmetic treatments just to fit Hollywood’s beauty standards. “Authenticity is more evocative than any kind of engineering you might consider doing...

Star Trek actually has a long history of casting comedians. Tig Notaro had a recurring role on Star Trek: Discovery, Sarah Silverman guest starred in a two-part episode of Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: The Next Generation once suggested that a holographic recreation of Joe Piscopo...

“I ain't been in this motherf--ker in 35 years!” he announced, noting that some people in the audience for "Netflix Is a Joke Presents: Fysee L.A. Comedy Night" weren’t old enough to remember comedy icons like Robin Williams and Richard Pryor, who trod the same stage and are immortalized with their photos on the club’s walls.
