Michael Ernest Martin

Solidly-built, moustachioed British character actor of stage and screen, the son of an RAF wing commander. For many years a familiar presence as straight man to star comedians like Benny Hill or Dave Allen. Trained in theatre management at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and made his stage bow at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, 1965. Most noted for his performances in comedy and pantomime.

Avid collector of early theatrical memorabilia.

Chose Sharvell-Martin as his stage name (Sharvell being his mother's maiden name) as there was already an actor called Michael Martin on Equity's books. He changed it legally upon his marriage in 1967.
