Menem: The President Show Review: The Spectacle of Political Seduction
Image
Menem: The President Show is a fictionalized chronicle of Carlos Menem, the flamboyant and divisive figure who dominated Argentine politics. The series recounts his improbable ascent from provincial governor to the nation’s highest office during the turbulent late 1980s.

This is not a staid political history. It is a high-energy dramedy that views a nation’s fate through a pop-culture lens, approaching its subject with a cocktail of humor, absurdity, and kinetic force. The narrative drops viewers into a period of national desperation, with hyperinflation gutting the economy and the public hungry for a savior.

Menem emerges as that unconventional figure, a populist who understood that raw charisma could be a potent political tool. The show immediately frames its central subject as a master seducer, a man who courted the masses with the same flair he applied to his personal life, blurring the line between political leadership and pure spectacle.

Pedro Almodóvar Begins Shooting Bitter Christmas for 2026 Release
Image
Less than a year since his first English-language feature premiered, Pedro Almodóvar has already embarked on his next project. Bitter Christmas (translated from Amarga Navidad) is now shooting in Madrid and Lanzarote throughout the summer, with a cast including Bárbara Lennie, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Victoria Luengo, Patrick Criado, Milena Smit, and Quim Gutiérrez.

Here’s the synopsis, translated from Spanish: “Elsa is an advertising director whose mother dies during a long December holiday weekend. She throws herself...

One of Cillian Murphy’s Lowest Rated Horror Movies Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Robert De Niro Is On Prime Video – Watch or Pass?
Image
Though it’s hard to believe, given his looks, Cillian Murphy has been in the show business for almost three decades. While his professional acting debut happened with a stage play named Disco Pigs in 1996, he wasn’t a household name until the 2002 film 28 Days Later.

However, in between starring in Danny Boyle’s science fiction horror and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Murphy starred in several projects. While some of his projects, like Batman Begins, Inception, and Peaky Blinders, cemented his position as a versatile actor, there were a few underwhelming appearances as well.

The 48-year-old Irish actor’s 2012 outing with Elizabeth Olsen and Robert De Niro, Red Lights, can be categorized as such. The movie, which has a meager score of only 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, has recently been added to Amazon Prime Video. But the question remains: should you watch it or pass?

The Man Who Loved UFOs Review: An obsession-fuelled surreal odyssey
Image
The Man Who Loved UFOs tells the adventurous story of José de Zer, an Argentine TV journalist in the 1980s driven by obsession to uncover the truth about extraterrestrials. Directed by Diego Lerman, the film centers around a notorious episode from de Zer’s career where he stirred up nationwide interest after investigating alleged UFO sightings in rural Cordoba.

Played captivatingly by Leonardo Sbaraglia, de Zer approaches any strange phenomenon with zealous enthusiasm. When locals pitch him reports of weird activity in the mountains, he eagerly sets off with cameraman Chango to find answers. But de Zer’s methods become increasingly questionable as he begins fabricating evidence to sensationalize the story.

The film explores de Zer’s fixation and whether his experience was real or merely the effects of stress. It also examines how far he went spreading tales for fame and ratings. Was he seeking truth or simply caught...

‘The Man Who Loved UFOs’ Netflix Review: A Biography That Is As Confused As Its Protagonist
Image
Biography is undoubtedly one of the most popular genres in existence, because people just love to watch a Wikipedia page come to life in live-action format. But as someone who has flunked his history exams quite a few times, I don’t like a by-the-numbers chronicling of the past. I love biographies that tend to have pizazz, if they have the audacity to be experimental with their storytelling, or if they are centered around a not-so-popular subject matter. Off the top of my head, I can name Schindler’s List, Ford v Ferrari, Elvis (the 2022 one), Rocketman, Jarhead, The Aviator, First Man, Spotlight, Serpico, Spencer, American Animals, Dog Day Afternoon, Tetris, Judas and the Black Messiah, Dolemite Is My Name, and Chopper as some of my favorite biopics. Now, it seemed like The Man Who Loved UFOs was tailor-made for me. It had a peculiar subject matter. The filmmaking looked good.

“The Man Who Loved UFOs” – Movie on Netflix: Where’s the Line Between Deception and Altered Reality?
Image
“The Man Who Loved UFOs” is an Argentine film starring Leonardo Sbaraglia. It is directed by Diego Lerman.

“The Man Who Loved UFOs” is an unconventional and distinctive film that navigates the realms of drama and comedy while humorously posing fundamental questions: Does reality truly exist, or is it merely a construct of language and media fiction?

This film is entertaining, intelligent, and ironic, going far beyond the surface of its narrative. Leonardo Sbaraglia delivers a remarkable performance, embodying a complex and ambivalent character filled with doubts and excesses, yet grounded in reality.

“The Man Who Loved UFOs” is a unique and unusual movie that conveys more through irony than with grandiose effects.

A film that skillfully engages the audience, inviting them to ponder through humor.

Netflix’s ‘The Man Who Loved UFOs’ Director on Exploring Fake News and Returning to the 1980s
Image
Netflix’s The Man Who Loved UFOs (El Hombre Que Amaba Los Platos Voladores) tells the story of Argentinian TV journalist José de Zer and his cameraman Chango. It is 1986, and they travel to La Candelaria in Córdoba upon receiving “an unusual proposal from two shady characters,” explains a plot synopsis on the website of the San Sebastian Film Festival where the film celebrated its world premiere on Tuesday. “Arriving in the village, there’s nothing much to see, only a scorched field surrounded by hills. What happened next was the work of a genius in the art of exaggeration with a hidden talent: the ability to create the best-known audiovisual recording on the existence of alien presence in the history of Argentinian television.”

Or, as Netflix says in its summary: “What follows is the invention of the most famous alien sightings in the history of Argentine television.”

Argentina’s Diego Lerman Reaches for the Skies in ‘The Man Who Loved UFOs,’ Vies for the Golden Shell at San Sebastian (Exclusive)
Image
Argentina’s Diego Lerman heads back for at least the third time to the San Sebastian Film Festival with his seventh and most ambitious film, “The Man Who Loved UFOs,” which competes in the festival’s official selection.

Loosely inspired by real events and people, the dramedy is set in the summer of 1986, where José de Zer, an entertainment journalist, is covering the theater season in Buenos Aires. He’s approached one day by two individuals who invite him to their pueblo with an odd proposal.

Intrigued, José and his trusted cameraman, Chango, travel to La Candelaria in Córdoba. Upon arriving at the scene – a perfectly round burnt patch in the hills – they find little that makes sense.

What follows is what is deemed the most memorable depiction of alien presence in Argentine TV history. Chango, a Sancho Panza to de Zer’s Don Quixote, follows him faithfully as they...

'We wanted to portray each human being with their contradictions' by Ámber Wilkinson
Erica Rivas and Marcelo Subiotto in La luz incidente (2015)
Argentinian actor Marcelo Subiotto has spent much of his life in supporting roles but has been gradually making his presence felt more on the international stage with the likes of 2021’s Dusk Stone, which played at both Venice and San Sebastian Film Festivals. Droll comedy Puan - about hapless philosophy professor Marcelo (played by Subiotto) who finds himself vying for a top job against a former classmate Rafael (Leonardo Sbaraglia) after the unexpected death of his mentor - is likely to further cement that.

The film, which was written by María Alché and Benjamín Naishtat specifically to give Subiotto the lead, saw the actor take home the Silver Shell for performance at this year’s San Sebastian, as well as winning the Silver Shell for best script.

Balancing the philosophical and the physical by Amber Wilkinson
Benjamín Naishtat
Benjamín Naishtat: 'We were always talking about Marcelo saying he never gets the main role and he's the best actor of his generation. We said, "Okay, let's write something for him".' Photo: Courtesy of San Sebastian Film Festival

Argentinian comedy Puan follows the life of a college philosophy professor in the wake of the sudden death of his mentor. Marcelo Pena finds himself suddenly vying for the position of department head with an ex-classmate, Rafael Sujarchuk (Leonardo Sbaraglia) fresh back from Germany with show-off streak - not to mention a film star girlfriend - at the same time as trying to navigate life in general. The film employs both physical and philosophical comedy to good effect, including iris shots, which close in on Marcello's face at the end of several scenes. Puan took both the Silver Shell for script and for Acting at San Sebastian and we...

‘Puan’ Review: The Personal Gets Political in a Sly, Delightful Argentinian Academia Comedy
Image
Anyone familiar with the often disquieting solo work of directors María Alché and Benjamín Naishtat may be put on high uneasiness-alert by the opening scene of “Puan,” their first co-directed feature. Despite the jaunty pop song playing, an older man going for a morning jog in a scrubby Buenos Aires park, suddenly keels over dead of a heart attack. Given the surreal griefscape of Alché’s “A Family Submerged” or the sinister tides of Naishtat’s superb “Rojo”, there’s every possibility that the music is a red herring, and the death portends what is to come. But perhaps that is “Puan”‘s first joke.

In fact, Alché and Naishtat seem to have found the experience of writing together in the captivity of lockdown a liberation of a looser, funnier storytelling mode. What transpires is a fleet-footed if sharply pointed existential-crisis comedy, shot with unobstrusive, naturalistic dynamism by Hélène Louvart,...

‘A Ravaging Wind,’ by Argentina’s Paula Hernandez, to Open San Sebastian’s Horizontes Latinos; Brazilian Carolina Markowicz’s ‘Toll’ Closes
Image
Argentine director Paula Hernández’s “The Ravaging Wind,” toplined by Latin American star Alfredo Castro, will be the opening night film of Horizontes Latinos sidebar at the 71st edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival, which runs Sept. 22-30.

Carolina Markowicz’s “Toll,” whose producers include Brazilian giant Globo Filmes, will close the section, one of the biggest examples of San Sebastian’s long-term commitment to Latin American cinema.

Bird Box: Barcelona Ending Reveals Surprising Twist in Franchise Lore
Image
This post contains spoilers for Bird Box: Barcelona.

The Bird Box franchise is all about what you don’t see. That’s true for the characters in the movie, who wear blindfolds to avoid seeing monsters that will otherwise cause you to commit suicide on sight. Yet it’s also true for the viewers, who also never see the monsters. At their best, Bird Box and the sequel Bird Box: Barcelona follow the principles of Jaws and Alien: They keep the creepy thing out of sight to let the viewer’s imagination do the work.

However, Bird Box: Barcelona does break from its predecessor with a radically different type of protagonist, Sebastián (Mario Casas) and his young daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard). Despite presenting themselves as a desperate father and child, we soon learn that Sebastián has seen the monsters and instead of committing suicide, he’s obsessed with forcing...

Bird Box Barcelona Ending Explained - Sebastian’s Fate & How The Movie Sets Up Bird Box 3
Image
Warning: Major spoilers below for Bird Box Barcelona!Bird Box Barcelona is the terrifying next chapter in Netflix's horror franchise, and the ending teases there's more to come in the near future. Bird Box Barcelona wrongfoots viewers within the first 20 minutes with its protagonist Sebastián, who is trying to survive in post-apocalyptic Barcelona with daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard). He soon meets up with a group of survivors - only to lead them all to their deaths by exposing them to the Bird Box franchise's monsters, who induce suicide when observed. It turns out that Sebastián sees the creatures as "angels," and he believes he's "saving" people by forcing them to look.

His daughter Anna is also a hallucination, as she died months earlier when other humans forced her to look at the creatures. Sebastián then encounters another group, but while initially working to subvert their goal of reaching safety at Montjuïc Castle,...

‘Bird Box Barcelona’ Review: A Dystopian Sci-Fi Redux, With Less Punch This Time
Image
Five years ago seems aeons in an era so disrupted by Covid. So it comes as a surprise to realize that the original screen “Bird Box” arrived a full 14 months or so in advance of pandemic restrictions — becoming an early Netflix pop-culture phenomenon before lockdown made that sort of thing a regular occurrence. Susanne Bier’s film of Josh Malerman’s sci-fi horror novel was intriguing and suspenseful enough, even if its emphasis on psychological drama over thrills made for a somewhat unlikely breakout hit.

Inevitably, if belatedly, there’s now a follow-up — but not an adaptation of Malerman’s own print sequel, which continued the travails of the character played by Sandra Bullock. Instead, “Bird Box Barcelona” is a “parallel story” set on another continent entirely. Written and directed by Alex and David Pastor, whose prior genre efforts “The Last Days” (2013) and “Carriers” (2009) both had similar basic premises, it...

‘Bird Box Barcelona’ Review – Netflix’s Standalone Spinoff Goes Big on Thrills But Light on Story
Image
Bird Box Barcelona, Netflix’s follow-up to the 2018 hit Bird Box, operates under the assumption that viewers are caught up to speed on the monstrous, unseen entities that rendered the world into a post-apocalyptic dystopia. Writer/Directors Álex Pastor and David Pastor bypass retreading the familiar invasion story beats to instead jump straight into character introductions against a backdrop already torn asunder. While 2018’s feature grapples with motherhood, Bird Box Barcelona explores grief, religion, and salvation. Its ambition in themes fascinates even when its execution struggles.

An opening scene introduces dad Sebastián (Mario Casas) having a touching moment with daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard) as they roller skate in an empty gym. It’s short-lived as the pair gear up with goggles and prepare for a blind trek to safety. The hostile strangers encountered shortly after signal a city deeply entrenched in and familiar with the creatures that have decimated the world.

Bird Box Barcelona Review
Image
Plot: After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows.

Review: Released eight months after John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, Bird Box became a hit for Netflix. In the five years since Susanne Bier’s film debuted, author Josh Malerman has penned a sequel novel while a film follow-up has been in development. The first of multiple global spin-offs, Bird Box Barcelona continues the tale of supernatural entities that force people to commit grisly suicide. Existing in the same post-apocalyptic universe as the Sandra Bullock-led hit film, Bird Box Barcelona manages to weave a distinct story while unveiling new details about the monstrous beings by taking the story in an unexpected direction.

"There are worse things than the creatures." Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for the Bird Box Barcelona movie (also known as Blindly in Spanish). It will be available to watch in just a few more weeks. The Netflix Spain production tells another story within the same post-apocalyptic people-go-kill-themselves universe as the first Bird Box in 2018. After a mysterious force decimates the world's population by causing all who "see" it to suddenly take their lives, Sebastian and his daughter Anna must navigate their journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona.
