- His line from Deliverance, "Squeal Like A Pig," which later he turned into an official website.
- Originally, Stanley Kubrick wanted McKinney for the role of the Drill Instructor in Cara de guerra (1987). McKinney was about to fly to London to meet with him, but Kubrick canceled at the last moment. He later explained to friend John Boorman that the prospect of meeting the Mountain Man from Amarga pesadilla (1972) was simply too terrifying.
- After their infamous scene together in Amarga pesadilla (1972), McKinney and Ned Beatty played genial (and platonic) friends who are members of the same Western gang in El juez de la horca (1972).
- He appeared in eight movies with Clint Eastwood from 1974 to 1989, when Eastwood stopped using his "stock company".
- He has appeared in two films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: Amarga pesadilla (1972) and El fugitivo Josey Wales (1976).
- He and his Amarga pesadilla (1972) partner Herbert 'Cowboy' Coward were named the top villains of all time in Maxim magazine's "Maxim Goes to the Movies" issue for their performance as the mountain men in the John Boorman classic.
- [on co-star Ned Beatty and Amarga pesadilla (1972)]: Even when I'm beating him up at first, after I throw the knife in the tree, chase him up the hill, pulling his underwear and slapping him, I'm thinking all the time about protecting him too...Although there's contempt, I'm still I'm taking care of him. I'm not losing control...He allowed himself, as far as I could see in his own mind and heart, to be violated. It takes a lot of courage for a man to do that. He's one hell of an actor.
