Looking for a laugh and a way to unwind? Netflix delivers with “Meet the Khumalos,” a family comedy designed purely for your entertainment and enjoyment.
Forget about philosophical quandaries, existential crises, and even, if you can, international politics for a bit.
We know it’s a tall order, but “Meet the Khumalos” is here to help you try.
The Plot
The plot of “Meet the Khumalos” centers on a classic comedic setup: clashing personalities and the unpredictable twists of family life. The story focuses on Grace Khumalo (played by Khanyi Mbau), whose seemingly perfect life in the upscale Umhlanga neighborhood is upended when her former high school acquaintance, Bongi Sithole (played by Ayanda Borotho), moves in next door. The situation escalates when Grace and Bongi are horrified to discover that their respective children have fallen secretly in love. This “forbidden love” element, juxtaposed with the mothers’ animosity, creates a central...

Everyone grieves in different ways. Some get over the death of a loved one in a week, some take a month, some are never able to “move on,” and some don’t even have the privilege to sit around and mope. Based on personal experience only, that last category is the most relatable because, well, life has always come in the way of my mourning stage. The endless cycle of giving exams, seeking employment, and ensuring that I don’t end up on the street has always kept me from taking even a 7-day hiatus to process death. For some reason, I stupidly assumed that this is the case for a majority of the planet’s population because of the consistent economic recession and rise in joblessness. And then I watched Dan Levy’s Good Grief and saw that rich people grieve in a manner that’s totally alien to me.

Exclusive: Netflix’s Africa content team has reshuffled with ex-Amazon exec Kaye-Ann Williams brought in to oversee TV and movies as Tendeka Matatu exits.
Williams takes on the newly-created Director of Scripted Content role and will focus on local productions, overseeing a team that develops and creates African original films and series. She joins after a short stint as content boss at The Traitors South Africa producer Primedia Studios and is a former Head of Scripted Series and Movies at Prime Video/Amazon Studios, where she focused on South Africa.
Commencing her role next month, Williams will report to Ben Amadasun, Netflix’s Vice President of Middle East & Africa Content.
Williams will join shortly after the exit of Matatu, who was Director of Local Language Films, Africa, for the past three years. No word on Matatu’s next move but we are told he is pursuing other opportunities. His credits...

After surviving Sisters’ Feud, I thought that I was safe from Netflix’s barrage of atrocious family dramas until the new year. What’s arriving when humanity hits 2025? Well, the new Harlan Coben adaptation, which, from the looks of it, has a missing family member and the words “suspense” and “thriller” attached to it, thereby adding to the streaming platform’s ever-expanding catalogue of crime thrillers centered around rich families or close-knit communities. I started off 2024 with Coben’s Fool Me Once. Then there was The Accident. After that, I came across We Were Kings. And I lost track of time, and maybe some of my brain cells, while enduring Blood Legacy, The Perfect Couple, and Territory. That’s why I made the mistake of thinking that, surely, Netflix didn’t have another one of these abominations in their vault. I was wrong, because the streaming giant has delivered an...

Now that we are approaching the tailend of one of the worst years in the history of mankind, my theory that Netflix probably asked creators from all across the globe to come up with the most bizarre crime-fueled family dramas is looking more and more solid. The streaming platform kick-started 2024 with Fool Me Once, which focused on the shenanigans of a singular posh British family. Then there was The Accident, which involved several Mexican families. So did We Were Kings. Blood Legacy and Savage Beauty highlighted the opulence and wealth of elite South African families. Despite featuring actors from Australia, Ireland, and even India, The Perfect Couple talked about the stupidity of rich American folks. And then Territory took us to the great Down Under. But the issue with all of these titles was that they were bloody boring. I mean, they were supposed to be scandalous and the plotlines...

Netflix’s 2024 batch of family crime dramas have been quite the test of patience. Things started off pretty rocky with Fool Me Once, which featured rich people doing murderous things (I watched it in January and I don’t remember the details). That was followed by The Brothers Sun, which was packed with some of the most enjoyable stunts and a lot of heartwrenching mother-son drama. The streaming platform lulled me into a sense of comfort with the equally amazing House of Ninjas, which was about, you guessed it, a family full of Shinobi facing a deadly threat. Then, things started to go off the rails. Eric was all over the place. Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper established some sort of stability. But the triple-punch delivered by The Accident, The Perfect Couple, and Blood Legacy demolished the genre’s reputation. And, while I thought they were done with this nonsense, now...

Season 1 of Blood Legacy ended on a cliffhanger, and though, as of now, there is no official announcement of season 2, I believe that the showrunners will come up with a second installment and give closure to its long list of characters. Khanyi got arrested at the end of season 1, as her own uncle framed her for the murder of her father. As far as Mandla was concerned, he had made some bad choices, and because of his greed to be the heir to the Ndlovu empire, he was stuck in a mess. So, let’s theorize what fate could have in store for the various members of the Ndlovu family and if they would be able to overcome the obstacles that came their way.

Netflix is home to shows hailing from a variety of genres. It releases so many projects in any given year that it’s hard to keep track of everything that’s available on the streaming platform. But, based on what I have seen, Netflix has been really, really struggling with the family drama genre. And it’s a very specific kind of family drama where an intentional or unintentional crime exposes the fabric of a household or community. Towards the end of August, we got The Accident, which was about a close-knit group of families coming apart at the seams after several kids were killed when a bouncy castle became airborne. It was truly one of the most atrocious things I had ever watched. That was followed by The Perfect Couple, where a posh family came undone because of the illegal activities of its members. It seemed like all the...

Directed by Nozipho Nkelemba, Blood Legacy makes us privy to the palace politics of the Ndlovu family and how, after the mysterious demise of Bhekisizwe Ndlovu, the CEO of Spear Industries, things changed drastically for all the members. Even before Bheki passed away, it was decided that his eldest son, Mandla, would handle the business and carry forward the legacy of his father. But Bheki had a change of heart, and his daughter, Khanyi, unwantingly, became a part of the entire mess. Khanyi always knew what her father was capable of but after she took charge of things, she realized that the entire foundation of the company was built on fraud and deceit. So, let’s find out what happened in Blood Legacy season 1 and if Khanyi was able to overcome all the challenges and resolve the conflicts that came her way.

Blood Legacy’s ending is centered around the resolution to the revelation that the deceased owner of Spear and former head of the Ndlovu family, Bhekisizwe, was murdered by his brother, Visu Ndlovu. Bhekisizwe was married to Madlamini, and they had three children: Mandla, Khanyi, and Siya. Mandla’s wife had died a long time ago, and he had two kids, Thuli and Zakhele. Khanyi was married to Akin Adesina, and they had two children, Amahle and Njabulo. Siya was married to Gabisile, and they had a son, Nido. Bhekisizwe was in his twilight years, and he was tired of being blackmailed by the A6 leaders, Liyana and Msizi Vesi, into letting Spear’s containers be used to ship illegal stuff like guns. So he started pushing back against their threats. Apart from dealing with these terrorists, Bhekisizwe had to choose his successor. Even though Mandla and Siya were the...
