Alexander Skarsgard Recalls “Crying in the Shower” After Bad Auditions
Image
Alexander Skarsgard is reflecting on his challenging years in Hollywood earlier in his career.

During a recent appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner’s on Me podcast, the actor recalled “crying in the shower” after bad auditions, prior to his 2008 breakout year with his roles in Generation Kill and True Blood.

“I found those experiences — they were horrible — when you go in for something that you know you’re not right for, and you’re not connecting with a character at all, but you’re at a place where you feel like you can’t say no to the audition,” Skarsgard said of his struggles with the audition process, even after he starred in 2001’s Zoolander.

“I was always on the cusp of being fired by my agents,” the Pillion actor added. “If I say no to this [audition], they’re probably gonna drop me, so I gotta go in,...

Ridley Scott's New Movie Is Dethroned on Streaming by Apple's Sci-Fi Series With 97% on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
There's a new No. 2 on Apple TV+. Echo Valley, the new Ridley Scott-produced thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore, has been kicked to third place by the new sci-fi series Murderbot.

Per FlixPatrol, Murderbot has jumped up three spots on Apple TV+'s Top 10 Overall list to No. 2, knocking Echo Valley down one spot to No. 3. However, Murderbot was unable to dethrone the reigning champion, Stick, the new Owen Wilson sports comedy series about a washed-up pro who turns to a young gifted golfer to turn his life around, which is holding onto that No. 1 spot. Of course, Echo Valley is still No. 1 when it comes to just movies on Apple TV+, while Stick and Murderbot are No. 1 and No. 2 for TV shows.

Murderbot is based on Martha Wells' The Murderbot Diaries, with the first season adapting All Systems Red, the 2017 novella that kicked off the sci-fi series.

How ‘Jaws’ Forever Changed the Modern Day Blockbuster — and What Today’s Examples Could Learn from It
Image
[Editor’s note: This story was originally published on June 20, 2017, in celebration of the 42nd anniversary of the release of “Jaws.” We are re-publishing it today with some light updates to celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary.]

The original trailer for Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” hardly hinted at the industry-changing blockbuster it was ultimately selling, instead playing up some serious melodrama (“it is as if God created the Devil and gave him jaws” is easily the best line of a highly quotable bit of marketing) and leaning into the best-selling bonafides of the book it was based on. The trailer boasted some of the film’s iconic shots and lines (you better believe “you’re gonna need a bigger boat” is in there), but mainly seemed interested in imparting the high stakes drama and horror of the story to audiences seeking a scary summer distraction.

That “Jaws” would become a mega-hit that would push Spielberg’s burgeoning career into the stratosphere was a surprise, but nobody could have predicted that...

When Emma Stone Turned Down A Major Role, Margot Robbie Stepped In—But The Film Failed To Match The Hype
Image
Margot Robbie Stepped In After Emma Stone Passed—The Movie Looked Big But Didn’t Land As Expected (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)

When The Legend of Tarzan came swinging into theaters in 2016, it had all the jungle juice it needed big names, big budget, and big legacy. According to IMDb an early casting decision could’ve changed everything—Emma Stone passed on playing Jane, leaving the path clear for Margot Robbie to swing into the role.

With The Wolf of Wall Street already under her belt, Robbie brought star power and steel to the Countess of Greystoke. The role was originally up for grabs between her and Stone, but the studio chose Robbie in early 2014. Even with that casting coup, The Legend of Tarzan struggled to find footing.

But while viewers are praising the portrayal of Tarzan by Hemsworth, there’s one element they’re not buying: Blake Lively as Jane. Of course, that has everything to do with her current public image. Lively is not leaving without sparking a heated online backlash, even though it is an unofficial trailer.

Alexander Skarsgård Reveals the Truth About Those 'Monsterverse' Rumors
Image
If you're one of the ones that thought Alexander Skarsgård should have gotten more screen time in 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong, you're not alone, as the star himself recently revealed that there were a lot more scenes with his character of Dr. Nathan Lind that ended up on the cutting room floor. Skarsgård appeared in the Monsterverse sequel as the Hollow Earth theorist, and while he definitely played a pivotal role in the film by reviving Kong toward the end of the movie, there have been rumors since that his part had a lot more meat on the bones.

Speaking with Empire (via Comicbook.com), Skarsgård confirmed that those rumors are true, admitting that "there was definitely more of a backstory" to Lind that fans didn't get to see. He called them "more character-driven scenes" which didn't necessarily fit into director Adam Wingard's overall vision once principal photography was complete.

"It Didn’t Need More Skarsgärd": Alexander Skarsgärd Explains Reduced 'Godzilla vs. Kong' Character Arc
Image
Alexander Skarsgårdis among the actors who completely disappear behind their characters – from The Legend of Tarzan and Big Little Lies, to playing the namesake robot in the upcoming Murderbot. Skarsgård has always been a fan favorite for his performances. So, naturally, fans felt that his performance was reduced in 2011’s Godzilla vs. Kong and his absence from the subsequent Godzilla x Kong: The New Empirehinted at the changing priorities of the MonsterVerse franchise. And while all this was only speculation among the fandom, Skarsgård recently spoke about the reduced arc of his character, Dr. Nathan Lind, and his creatively fulfilling relationship with director Adam Wingard.

“There was definitely more of a backstory, more character-driven scenes that ended up on the cutting-room floor,” Skarsgård explained. Dr. Nathan Lind was introduced as a discredited geologist whose theories about Hollow Earth eventually proved correct and stayed an indispensable part of the narrative, even...

10 Popular Books With the Most Adaptations, Ranked
Image
Whenever a book becomes popular and a bestseller, it's only a matter of time before it becomes a movie or TV show. And when these books reach a certain level of popularity or relevance, they can receive multiple adaptations. Books like Pride and Prejudice, Stephen King's It or Carrie, or Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express are now classic books that have received multiple movie or TV show adaptations. But while these popular books have taken to the screen more than once, they aren't close to the many adaptations some of the most adapted books of all time have.

Everyone knows the story of Dracula, Frankenstein or Tarzan, but probably not everyone knows just how many adaptations these books have. Some of the most adapted books have over 100 adaptations between movies, TV and theater productions. One of these books has more than 500 different adaptations. Other books have become such...

Ghost Rider: 6 Actors Who Could Play The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spirit Of Vengeance
Image
Nicolas Cage played Ghost Rider in two disappointing Sony Pictures movies. When the sequel bombed, the rights to the character reverted to Marvel Studios and that's where he's remained ever since.

As we write this, rumours are swirling about the Spirit of Vengeance appearing in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Spider-Man 4. There's also been chatter of a solo movie or TV series, suggesting there are finally firm plans for the anti-hero after Robbie Reyes' brief stint in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In this feature, we've selected six actors we think would be a good pick to bring Johnny Blaze to life on screen in the MCU. Hopefully, you'll find these names a refreshing change of pace from the usual suspects who crop up online.

Why 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' Deserves a Sequel
Image
As breakout TV star Ella Purnell looks to capitalize on her 2024 success, Tim Burton should consider making a sequel to the ill-fated Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The 2016 teen fantasy film, cut from the cloth of Harry Potter and X-Men, follows the mysterious residents of the titular home, where a group of youngsters with strange superpowers come of age, develop their skills, and embrace their peculiarities while fending off a formidable foe.

Despite scoring mixed-to-positive reviews and nearly tripling its budget at the international box office, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was shuttered before receiving its planned cinematic sequel. Now that a decade has passed and Ella Purnell has become a highly sought-after Hollywood A-lister, Tim Burton Productions and 20th Century Fox should revisit the movie and make an official sequel.

'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse' Finds Its New Directors
Image
The final installment in the highly successful and acclaimed Spider-Verse film has found its directors. Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson have been tapped to direct Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

In an exclusive report from Deadline, it was announced that the Sony Animation project would recruit longtime members of the Spider-Verse family to helm the last film in the trilogy jump-started by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. And though the names of the new directors may not be as big as the aforementioned Lord and Miller, the two men have worked on the franchise since its inception.

"We have had the immense privilege of being part of Miles' journey from the very beginning, and directing the conclusion to his story is beyond exciting," said Persichetti and Thompson. "The creativity and care poured into every minute of this project has been truly inspiring. We have crafted what we feel is a very satisfying ending,...

Moana 2 Is The Success Story Disney Missed Out On 21 Years Ago With Sequel To $186 Million Disappointment
Image
In under a decade, Moana is already getting a live-action remake much sooner than any other Disney princess, and her sequel film, Moana 2, has hit theaters with early success. Moana 2 also joins a once-rare club as one of the Disney animated sequels to go to theaters.

While this has become more commonplace with movies like Frozen 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet, in the past, many Disney animated movie sequels would go straight to video or DVD. The quality of these films also was not always as impressive as their original movies. This was the case for the sequel to Atlantis: The Lost Empire; however, that movie -- like Moana 2 -- was not initially meant to be a film. It was meant to be a television series. However, it was made into a film almost as if this were a form of punishment, while Moana 2 builds off Moana's initial success.

Every Single Tarzan Movie (In Order Of Release)
Image
Though most people are familiar with Disney's Tarzan and the 2016 film The Legend of Tarzan, the classic story has been adapted to film dozens of times. The character was conceived by writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, who published the first Tarzan novel in 1914. From there, he wrote several sequels, and it wasn't long before the first movie was made about the infant English lord raised by apes. From there, a new version of Tarzan appeared on the screen decade after decade, turning Burroughs' books into several movies.

In the classic story of Tarzan, which has been adapted in both live-action and animated films, an English lord and his wife, John and Alice Clayton, become stranded with their infant son after their shipwreck off the coast of Africa. After Alice and John die, their young son, John Clayton III, becomes abandoned. Fortunately, he is taken in by a female ape, who raises...

Margot Robbie & Alexander Skarsgards 8-Year-Old Adventure Movie Had Everything To Be A Hit But Flopped At The Box Office
Image
2016's The Legend of Tarzan was a critical and commercial failure, even though it had assembled many of the ingredients that could have made it an adventure classic. The movie, which starred Alexander Skarsgrd as Tarzan and Margot Robbie as Jane, was a retelling of the story of the iconic Edgar Rice Burroughs character. Tarzan is a multimedia icon, and his story was adapted to the screen as early as 1918 in the silent film Tarzan of the Apes, with more than four dozen adaptations to follow, including Disney's Oscar-winning 1999 animated movie Tarzan.

The 2016 title is the most recent Tarzan movie to hit the big screen, and its general reception may be one reason that the property has since gone dormant on the big screen for nearly a decade. In addition to most likely failing to turn a profit in theaters, it was excoriated by critics and met with apathy from general audiences.

IndieWire can confirm that the studio won MRC’s highly-anticipated feature after what we’re told was “a fierce bidding war.”

As previously announced, MRC is the studio financing the film, with Robbie’s LuckyChap producing. Nicholas Galitzine Had A Cringey Tarzan Audition That Still Haunts Him
Image
Ever since he appeared in the Netflix original movie "Purple Hearts" in 2022, British actor Nicholas Galitzine has become a major breakout star ... but that doesn't mean he aced all of his early auditions. In fact, he says one of those auditions was so awful that he still cringes just thinking about it.

During a roundtable with The Hollywood Reporter in June 2024 — which also featured Jon Hamm ("Fargo"), Matt Bomer ("Fellow Travelers"), Clive Owen ("A Murder at the End of the World"), Callum Turner ("Masters of the Air"), and David Oyelowo ("Lawmen: Bass Reeves") — Galitzine and his contemporaries started talking about auditions, and despite being one of the youngest performers at the table, Galitzine had a lot to say. After the others shared some stories, THR brought up Galitzine's recent film "The Idea of You" and the fact that his co-star Anne Hathaway said he could have "chemistry with a lamp,...

The film, based on the popular Edgar Rice Burroughs novel series, is considered to be the last film of the Disney Renaissance, a period of films that helped rejuvenate the company and reestablish it as an animation juggernaut.

Disney's 1999 Tarzan Movie Gets Perfect Accuracy Score From Ape Expert
Image
1999's Tarzan earns a 10 out of 10 score from an ape expert for its depiction of a gorilla protecting a human baby from a leopard. Despite this, a primate expert concedes that an ape could not successfully raise a human. Disney's Tarzan was a major success critically and commercially.

Disney's Tarzan scores a perfect grade from a primate expert. Released in 1999 and directed by Chris Buck and Kevin Lima, Tarzan adapts a story first published in 1912 by Edgar Rice Burroughs about a man raised from a baby by apes. The animated Disney film, which features voice performances from Tony Goldwyn and Minnie Driver, earned positive reviews from critics and was a box office hit.

In a recent video for Insider, primatologist Mireya Mayor analyzes scenes from Tarzan and grades them for their accuracy.

The Lovecraftian Behemoth in ‘Underwater’ Remains One of the Coolest Modern Monster Reveals
Image
One of the most important elements of delivering a memorable movie monster is the reveal. It’s a pivotal moment that finally sees the threat reveal itself in full to its prey, often heralding the final climactic confrontation, which can make or break a movie monster. It’s not just the creature effects and craftmanship laid bare; a monster’s reveal means the horror is no longer up to the viewer’s imagination.

When to reveal the monstrous threat is just as important as How, and few contemporary creature features have delivered a monster reveal as surprising or as cool as 2020’s Underwater.

The Setup

Director William Eubank’s aquatic creature feature, written by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) and Adam Cozad (The Legend of Tarzan), is set around a deep water research and drilling facility, Kepler 822, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, sometime in the future.

Is The Legend of Tarzan Based on a True Story?
Image
The Legend of Tarzan may have been inspired by real-life individuals like William Charles Midlin who lived in isolation after a shipwreck. Using artistic liberties, the film highlights historical events such as Congo's enslavement, influenced by characters like George Washington Williams. Despite fictional elements like Tarzan's romantic interests, the movie succeeds in portraying how individuals can shape history by doing the right thing.

The legend of Tarzan has been told in various ways throughout the years, ranging from animated classics to a modern live-action film that sought to tackle Tarzan's afterlife as John Clayton. While the 2016 film, The Legend of Tarzan, starring Alexander Skarsgard, Margot Robbie, and Samuel L. Jackson, was incredible in terms of production values, the majority of fans were concerned about the story it presented.

The portrayal of Tarzan was fairly realistic, considering that his origin story is much more sophisticated in the film, although fans...

Is Margot Robbie's A-List Status Enough to Greenlight a Legend of Tarzan Sequel?
Image
Margot Robbie's success with Barbie has led to renewed interest in her older films, such as The Legend of Tarzan. Despite its initial flop at the box office, the film is now gaining popularity on Netflix thanks to Robbie's star power. While a sequel to The Legend of Tarzan is possible, Robbie's current status as a sought-after actor and producer may lead her to pursue more exciting and original projects.

The Legend of Tarzan was meant to be a bit of a prestige picture: a classic story, big-name actors, and an ample budget. But the film didn't have the legs to get it near the status its cast should have warranted. That being said, Margot Robbie may have the chance to give it another go.

In the past few years, Robbie has been building her status in Hollywood. This has culminated in her producing and starring in Barbie, the...
