Russell Crowe’s 91% Rotten Tomatoes Buddy Comedy Returns to Streaming Charts After Sequel Update
Image
Russell Crowe will always be known for his Oscar-winning work in Gladiator, but nine years ago, he starred in a beloved comedy that’s returning to streaming charts. Crowe stars alongside Ryan Gosling in The Nice Guys, the 2016 buddy cop bumbling detective film following two private eyes who investigate the death of an adult film star and a missing girl. The Nice Guys is currently streaming on Paramount+, and the film has surged back into the streamer’s top 10, sitting at #10 at the time of writing. This comes not long after director Shane Black provided an update on the long-awaited Nice Guys 2, mentioning that it is possible to make a sequel, but that the studio likely won’t want to spend even more money for a follow-up after the original flopped at the box office.

Although The Nice Guys earned rave reviews of 91% from critics and 79% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes,...

July Will Be a Sad Month for ‘Overlord’ Fans
Image
In typical Netflix fashion, the streaming giant is already gearing up for the removal of several favorites, including some high-profile movies, series, and a couple of Netflix Originals, ahead of next month. Among these works of art is the beloved isekai anime series, Overlord, as confirmed by What’s on Netflix. All four seasons of Overlord depart Netflix on July 1, about three weeks away, which may not be enough time for fans to revisit the 52-episode series.

While this may be saddening, several other options are available to stream Overlord. Crunchyroll currently streams all four seasons but may not be as easily accessible as Netflix. Hulu offers Overlord, too, but unfortunately, only Season 1 is available on the streamer. Meanwhile, for physical media collectors, retailers list each collection for around $30-40, depending on the format.

Overlord is based on Kugane Maruyama’s eponymous light novel series and was produced by Madhouse...

Love Hurts gets a 4K Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Universal
Image
Ke Huy Quan‘s leading debut with Love Hurts may not have blazed as hot as his comeback in Everything, Everywhere All at Once, but it’s certainly the type of throwback movie that is rarely seen nowadays. Quan’s charm and his action prowess really come through and it’s cool to see him step up into the lead role.

Love Hurts is set to have a collector’s edition 4K Blu-ray release courtesy of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, according to Blu-ray.com. While Love Hurts didn’t make a big splash at the box office, you can catch the movie on physical media with a bunch of special features, including a bevy of deleted and alternate scenes. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Quan revealed that he channeled Jamie Lee Curtis when it came to how he treated his Love Hurts co-stars. Column: The Doc Oscar Race’s ‘Will’ Wild Card
Image
What’s the deal with the film Academy’s documentary branch? This season’s shortlist for the best documentary feature Oscar, released Dec. 17, was missing one of the year’s most acclaimed crowd-pleasers, Warner Bros.’ Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story — which is at 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, won the top Critics Choice documentary award and is nominated for the Producers Guild’s top doc award — and also impressive documentaries about Martha Stewart (Martha), Celine Dion (I Am: Celine Dion), James Carville (Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid) and John Williams (Music by John Williams), among others.

This isn’t to say that the 15 docs that were shortlisted are lacking — to the contrary, most are excellent. But it does reconfirm the doc branch’s weird aversion, over roughly the past decade, to populist titles.

During that period, the branch declined to shortlist Good Night Oppy, a charmer about a Wall-e-like Mars...

Conservative Documentary ‘Am I Racist?’ Snubbed By Oscar Doc Voters, Despite Claiming Box Office Crown
Image
Am I Racist?, the controversial documentary that satirizes Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, failed to make the Oscar shortlist of nonfiction features today, despite earning more money at the box office than any other documentary this year, by far.

The film directed by Justin Folk features conservative author and podcaster Matt Walsh going undercover to infiltrate Dei seminars, dinners and the like. It scooped up more than $12 million at the domestic box office, but that wasn’t enough to sway the minds of Academy Documentary Branch members, who determine the shortlist (as well as the eventual five Oscar nominees).

Film participant Amanda Zurawksi and executive producer Hilary Clinton speak after the world premiere of ‘Zurawski v Texas’ at Telluride Film Festival

It may come as cold comfort to the Am I Racist? team, but films with an overt take on American politics were all spurned by the doc branch. Those include Zurawaski v Texas,...

Joey King's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
The best Joey King movies and TV shows prove that the young actress has a lot more going for her than just the string of releases she enjoyed after her breakout in The Kissing Booth. King got her start as a child actor, with her first roles coming with she was only seven. As a youngster, she appeared in some major blockbusters, including Battle: Los Angeles, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Conjuring. That experience prepared her for what has become a leading lady role as she reaches her 20s.

That all started in The Kissing Booth, which saw King star in all three movies in the franchise from 2018 to 2021. The success of those films on Netflix opened the door for King to earn more roles both in movies and on streaming services. She took on the lead role of Gypsy-Rose Blanchard in The Act, a fun...

Steve Carrell’ 24% Rated Movie is One of the Biggest Box-Office Bombs That The Office Star Would Like to Erase from Existence
Image
Steve Carrell is best known for his turn as Michael Scott in the NBC sitcom The Office. The Golden Globe award-winning actor has also starred in a string of commercially successful comedy movies. However, despite Carrell’s comedic chops, the actor could not save one of his most expensive comedy movies from flopping hard at the box office.

The Office star Steve Carrell has several hit comedies in his filmography (Credit: NBC).

In 2007, Carrell starred in the 2007 fantasy comedy film Evan Almighty, a sequel to the commercially successful 2003 comedy Bruce Almighty. However, the sequel could not create a splash at the box office like its predecessor. Moreover, its high budget had already doomed the movie before its release. Here is why Carrell might want to erase it from his filmography.

Steve Carell Starred In The Most Expensive Comedy Movie Ever Made And It Bombed At The Box Office
Image
The Steve Carell movie Evan Almighty was at one time the most expensive comedy movie ever, in addition to being an enormous box office bomb. The 2007 movie was a sequel to 2003's Bruce Almighty, which starred Jim Carrey in the title role. The follow-up, which featured an ensemble cast that included Morgan Freeman, Lauren Graham, John Goodman, John Michael Higgins, Jimmy Bennett, and Wanda Sykes, focused on the story of a previously minor Bruce Almighty supporting character named Evan Baxter who was played by Carell, who had since risen to fame playing Michael Scott on the sitcom The Office.

In addition to being a television star, Carell would go on to be a major movie star. One of his best-known roles is voicing the reformed supervillain Gru in the Despicable Me movies, but he has held many major roles outside of the animated franchise in both comedies and dramas. This...

“People claiming La La Land as a horror movie while this exist”: Ryan Gosling’s $16 Million Movie is So Depressing It Will Make His Oscar-Winning Love Story With Emma Stone Look Joyful
Image
Ryan Gosling might have undertaken various roles across different genres but fans love him best for his dramatic portrayals in the romantic genre. From the critically acclaimed The Notebook to Crazy, Stupid, Love, Gosling is Hollywood’s typical ‘nice guy’ (and an actual one at that), who seems to shine best in romantic dramas, whether they be comedy or downright agonizing.

One of his most excruciatingly painful yet beautiful romantic films was La La Land opposite Emma Stone. A bittersweet film, some viewers have gone as far as labeling it a ‘horror movie’ for the emotional rollercoaster it was. However, many seem to forget Gosling’s one Indie film that is so brutal that it even makes his Oscar-winning film look like a joyful dream in comparison.

The Awards Pundits: Feinberg and Keegan on Telluride’s Rocky Mountain Highs and Lows
Image
In keeping with annual tradition, The Hollywood Reporter’s executive editor (awards) Scott Feinberg and senior editor (film) Rebecca Keegan huddled at the end of this year’s Telluride Film Festival to discuss their Labor Day weekend in the Rockies. (Please note: THR will now be posting a written back-and-forth of this sort every month under the banner of ‘The Awards Pundits,’ with Feinberg, Keegan, deputy awards editor Beatrice Verhoeven and senior awards editor Steven Zeitchik all participating.)

Feinberg Not to sound like Saturday Night Live’s Stefon, but the 2024 edition of Telluride seemingly had everything — or, at least, everyone. There was fake Donald Trump (The Apprentice’s Sebastian Stan) and real Jack Smith (flanked by three Secret Service agents, the special counsel investigating Trump was here to support wife Katy Chevigny’s film The Easy Kind); a guy who made a movie about SNL (Saturday Night’s director Jason Reitman...

Telluride Film Festival Unveils 2024 Lineup
Image
The national political conventions may be over, but Hollywood’s version of “the race” is just getting started as the fall festival season begins, and this year’s Telluride has plenty to offer for politicos and cinephiles alike.

The 51st annual festival gets underway Friday in Colorado with a slate of world premieres including a Hillary Clinton- and Jennifer-Lawrence-produced abortion film that is up for acquisition, Zurawski v Texas, a Jason Reitman-directed comedy about Saturday Night Live — Sony’s Saturday Night — and an adaptation of an August Wilson play on intergenerational trauma helmed by first-time director Malcolm Washington, son of Denzel (Netflix’s The Piano Lesson).

A year after the Screen Actors Guild strike robbed festivals of much of their star-power, Telluride is expected to be thick with A-listers once again, including Angelina Jolie, attending for the North American premiere of Pablo Larrain’s Maria, hot off its...

It has been observed time and time again that upcoming actors slowly replace the veteran ones in Hollywood. The world seems to have fallen in love with Glen Powell due to his role in Top Gun: Maverick. In the process, however, fans are now comparing Powell to Ryan Gosling.

With certain audiences and the kind of movies that an actor stars in, Ryan Gosling has been referred to as a ‘ladies’ man’ several times. However, fans defended the star by saying that his movies are not just meant for female audiences.

Glen Powell Is The Next Big Actor in Hollywood

Sure, Gosling has starred in movies like La La Land, The Notebook, and, Crazy, Stupid, Love which falls into the romantic side of things but that doesn’t mean he only stars in particular kinds of movies.

Denzel Washington's 2000 Sports Drama Launched 3 A-List Actors' Movie Careers
Image
"Remember the Titans" launched the movie careers of Ryan Gosling, Hayden Panettiere, and Kate Bosworth. Gosling transitioned from TV to film after "Titans" and later starred in "The Notebook" and "La La Land." Panettiere's role as Sheryl Yoast in "Titans" led to "Heroes" and a successful career in film and TV.

Few movies have launched the careers of more than one A-list actor, and one sports drama starring Denzel Washington marked the beginning of the movie careers of three well-known actors. Denzel Washington has a variety of movies in his extensive filmography, and one of his most memorable and beloved works is Remember the Titans. Released in 2000 and directed by Boaz Yakin, Remember the Titans is loosely based on the true story of Herman Boone, coach of the 1971 T.C. Williams High School football team.

Remember the Titans follows Boone (Washington), who, in 1971, is hired as head coach of T.C. Williams High School,...

The Artwork of Legendary Producer Denise Di Novi Parts the Veil on a Painful Past
Image
Creativity can be a kind of magic. Whether it's actually an outpouring of the subconscious or something arbitrary that's given meaning in hindsight, sometimes the art uses the artist to finally get born. If you're an artist, you may ask yourself, "Where did this come from? How did this get there?" Especially if you've never done it before. That's what happened with legendary film producer Denise Di Novi, who is having her first gallery show after four years of painting. "I never had any history of painting at all. I mean, I've been a creative person all my life, and my parents are creative. My dad's a jazz musician. My late mother was a dancer, and many of my relatives are artists," explained Di Novi in an interview with MovieWeb ahead of her exhibitions (information here).

Di Novi is the producer of numerous classics Heathers, Edward Scissorhands, A Walk to Remember,...

“He’s for the girls”: Ryan Gosling Just Knows How to be the Ultimate Ladies Man and His Pick For the Scariest Animal Proves It
Image
In a world where patriarchy and male chauvinism dominate the social and other spheres of our lives, Ryan Gosling wears his masculinity on his sleeve. But unlike others or most of his contemporaries, the star is a feminist through and through, and is not afraid to acknowledge it. An ‘ultimate ladies’ man’, the actor’s boyish good looks, charismatic personality, and versatile acting skills have made him popular among fans.

While he has had his fair share of chauvinistic hardcore roles, the actor has lately been famous for his unconventional masculine roles. His answer to the question— ‘what is the scariest animal’— only proves why he is so popular among the ladies and men.

Futurama's Second Alien Language Was Actually A Complex Mathematical Code
Image
When the makers of "Futurama" were first constructing the series, they dropped in a prominent background detail that they knew nitpickers and lay-linguists would adore. One can see on billboards, in store windows, and even painted on the sides of buildings, an oblique alien language constructed of curved symbols and dots. The "Alienese" might have been dismissed as a mere design flourish, but the letters were too neatly written and too consistent across the series to be dismissed. It took very little time for "Futurama" fans to crack the code and find that all those alien signs could be translated. It seems that the Alien Language, nicknamed AL1 by fans, was a simple letter-replacement cipher. The cipher became so well known that handy translators can now be found online.

"Futurama" co-creator David X. Cohen was a little disappointed that AL1 was unlocked so quickly. He was, of course, careful to...

Futurama Cut A Longer Alternate Ending For The Day The Earth Stood Stupid
Image
In the "Futurama" episode "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid", Earth is invaded by a destructive species of gigantic, disembodied brains. The brains, called the Brainspawn, hate all forms of intelligence, and aim to rid the universe of any brainwaves other than their own. They also emanate an energy field that drastically reduces the intelligence of everyone on Earth; shortly after the invasion, everyone decides to play the lottery, buy internet stock, and join the Reform Party.

Only Fry (Billy West) is immune to the Brainspawn's energy field, thanks to an old time-travel incident that caused Fry to become his own grandfather (don't ask). Fry confronts the Brain Leader (Maurice Lamarche) in the New York Public Library, the ideal place for a brain to hang out. Initially, the Brain Leader psychically inserts Fry and Leela (Katey Sagal) into books like "Moby-Dick" and "Pride and Prejudice," but Fry eventually outwits the brain,...

“No, I’ll be taking it with me”: Scarlett Johansson, Dwayne Johnson and Many Other A-Listers Must Have Faced the Same Issue as Emma Stone After This Rare SNL Achievement
Image
Emma Stone isn’t just another pretty face in Hollywood. After announcing her arrival as a teenager with Superbad and Zombieland, Stone took her first steps into the big league with films like Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Help, and The Amazing Spider-Man franchise with Andrew Garfield. She also created history by winning 2 Oscars before the age of 36 and joined the likes of stars like Hillary Swank and Jodie Foster.

In December 2023, Stone achieved another milestone when she became the latest star to have hosted Saturday Night Live 5 times and thereby became the youngest member to do so. But the Oscar winner realized that the honor of receiving the coveted velvet jacket came with a surprising caveat, which she managed to expertly navigate.

Essential Viewing: 11 Olivia Munn Movies and TV Shows You Must See
Olivia Munn
We've covered quite a few actors and actresses here at TV Fanatic, and while some of them have fallen into the "familiar face in the background" roles, none have snuck up on audiences like Olivia Munn.

One of her first acting gigs was that of "Claw Hostess" in the Steve Carell and Tina Fey comedy Date Night.

Although her part was small, the actress was one of the most memorable experiences of that movie—besides Mark Wahlberg shirtless, that is.

Though she looks like a model, Munn's career has focused solely on the small and big screen and live and scripted appearances.

In many ways, she's like that actor you notice when you rewatch movies from years ago, making you go, "Wait, isn't that what's her name from that thing?"

It's an extremely common occurrence with actors who turn into big names later in their careers. Don't believe me?...

Image
Bachelor Nation star Rachel Recchia blames Bip cancellation on ‘stupid’ Season 9. What went wrong on her season of the show? Keep reading for her thoughts on the spinoff.

Bachelor In Paradise Put On Pause?

Bachelor In Paradise should be celebrating its 10th season this year. However, as time goes on without ABC renewing the spinoff, fans think the show has been shelved for this year.

Similar to the way Bravo has been putting shows or even cast members on ‘pause’ lately, it seems ABC is doing the same with Bip. Season 9 wasn’t well-received by fans and even worse, all three of the final couples broke up within days of the season finale airing.

Rachel Recchia Blames Cancellation On ‘Stupid’ Season 9

Rachel Recchia was one of the contestants on Season 9 of Bip. Her being there was a big deal because she was previously the co-lead on Season 19 of The Bachelorette with Gabby Windey.
