Teri Garr in Corazonada (1981)
The 2023 Venice Classics Lineup Includes New Cuts of One from the Heart and Andrei Rublev, a Rare Orson Welles Film Restored & More
Teri Garr in Corazonada (1981)
At a certain point you care less about world premieres and fixate mostly on a festival’s repertory slate. And even by the high standards set with Cannes Classics or NYFF Revivals is this year’s Venice Classics in a class of its own. We could start at the new cuts for three of the greatest directors ever: One from the Heart is the latest film to be given a revision by Francis Ford Coppola, following recuts of Apocalypse Now, Twixt, and Dementia 13––to say nothing of restorations like The Rain People, of which we’re hosting the New York premiere next weekend––while Andrei Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev will debut in “the reconstruction of the complete original version, which was censored before its release and has never been seen until now.” Meanwhile one of Yasujiro Ozu’s greatest films, There Was a Father, has been amended by “recent rediscovery...

Paris-based sales company Luxbox has acquired 13 titles from the catalogue of the late Portugese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira.

The films span the director’s first feature 1942’s Aniki Bóbó through 1993’s Abraham’s Valley. The latter will be given a special screening at the upcoming Directors’ Fortnight. The Cannes sidebar also pays tribute to the director with its 2023 poster and features an image of Portuguese actress Leonor Silveira in tribute to Abraham’s Valley and celebrates the 30th anniversary of its selection at Directors’ Fortnight that year.

The Stephen King Novel That He Lost... Found... And Never Published!
Image
Stephen King has shared a variety of horror stories with generations of readers for decades, but there’s one novel that has gone through a lot and hasn’t been published. Stephen King has rightfully earned the nickname of King of Horror as he has allowed readers to explore different types of fears and meet a variety of monsters (both human and supernatural) for years, beginning in 1974 with Carrie. Since then, readers have an idea of the type of stories and characters that they will find in King’s novels, but he always saves a couple of surprises to keep them entertained from beginning to end.

Many of Stephen King’s characters and stories have become part of pop culture, as are villains like It’s Pennywise, The Shinning’s Jack Torrance, and Randall Flagg, and his stories have formed an interesting universe, but there are a couple of novels...

‘Devil Hunter’ Blu-ray Review (88 Films)
Stars: Al Cliver, Antônio do Cabo, Antonio Mayans, Bertrand Altmann, Gisela Hahn, Ursula Buchfellner, Werner Pochath | Written by Jess Franco, Julian Esteban | Directed by Jess Franco

Its hard to believe, but growing up I thought Jess Franco was a horror-filmmaking god; even though I’d never seen a single one of his genre films. Why? Well because I was an avid subscriber of Dark Side Magazine and the way they wrote about Franco and his films with such reverence (and some irony it would seem looking back at it now), you would have thought he was up there with the horror greats. Yet while, now, I know differently – Franco was very much a journeyman filmmaker, cranking out films at a pace unheard of today – he still has a huge fanbase out there. You only have to look at just how many of his film are available on DVD and Blu-ray,...

Zombie – The Blu Review
Review by Roger Carpenter

After George Romero’s remarkable international success with Dawn of the Dead (entitled Zombi in Italy), the Italians, always ready to hop on the celluloid bandwagon, rushed to churn out tons of unofficial sequels to the film as well as their own originals, just so long as “zombie,” “living dead,” or something similar was featured in the title. Thus, we have films such as Hell of the Living Dead, Burial Ground, and Zombi Holocaust, as well as the “sort-of” zombie film, Nightmare City, along with many others. But the first of the zombie films to hit theaters after Dawn of the Dead was Zombie.

Though the title certainly was a blatant ploy to ride the coattails of Dawn of the Dead, director Lucio Fulci always chafed at the notion the film itself was a rip-off of Romero’s smash hit. I won’t go into the arguments here because frankly,...

It Came From 1980x: Cannibal Terror – Aesop’s Fables for Kidnappers
What can I say about the cannibal subgenre that stormed Euro cinema during the 70′s and 80′s? I love ‘em. I love ‘em when they’re good. I love them when they are not so good. I love them when they are an excuse to put naked women on the screen and cover them in Crayola paint (or reasonable knock off). There are very few that I dislike and most of the ones I dislike came about toward the end of the late 80′s as knock-offs of the best knock-offs that the subgenre ever produced. I’m looking at you Green Inferno (not the soon to be released Eli Roth homage picture either). Today we’re here to discuss Cannibal Terror, a Euro-Cine picture distributed by Severin Films and full of exploitation gold. Hope you brought your appetites because 1980x is going to the jungle, hungry, horny and ready to...

Underground Sex and Euro-Horror Director Dead; Reviled by Catholic Church, Goya Winner
Spanish director dies following a stroke: Best known for his nearly two hundred underground, "exploitation" films "I think I was born because my father and my mother had sex ... ." Nope, that has nothing to do with the anti-censorship lectured delivered by Oz the Great and Powerful and Interior. Leather Bar's James Franco online. The words above were uttered by another Franco, a Spaniard. No, not the foaming-at-the-mouth right-wing military ruler Francisco Franco, but multitasking filmmaker Jesús Franco, aka Jess Franco aka dozens of other aliases, including those in honor of jazz performers Clifford Brown and James P. Johnson. His oeuvre included about 200 films, among them The White Slave, The Sexual History of O, Macumba Sexual, , Emmanuelle Exposed, Vampyros Lesbos, The Mistresses of Dr. Jekyll, and White Cannibal Queen. The director died today in Malaga, a city in southern Spain, after suffering a stroke. According to reports, he had never truly...

Lina Romay in Killer Barbys vs. Dracula
Lina Romay: Sex/Horror Movie Actress Dies
Lina Romay in Killer Barbys vs. Dracula
Lina Romay, a pretty brunette who starred in numerous risqué features for longtime companion Jesus Franco, has died. According to online reports, Romay died of cancer on February 15. She was 57. Born Rosa María Almirall Martínez in Barcelona on June 25, 1954, Romay began her film career while in her late teens. The source for her artistic name was another Lina Romay, a singer with Xavier Cugat's band who had featured roles in movies such as Love Laughs at Andy Hardy and Joe Palooka in the Big Fight. (This Lina Romay died at age 91 in December 2010 in the L.A. suburb of Pasadena.) The Spanish Lina Romay's movies, however, were anything but G-rated fare. Her gialli and erotica efforts had titles such as Tender and Perverse Emanuelle (1973), Justine and the Whip (1979), The White Slave (1985), and Alone Against Terror (1987). From the early '70s to 2005, she was featured in more than 100 productions.

Lucio Fulci’s Zombie at the Hi-Pointe Midnights this Weekend!
Zombie , the audaciously disgusting spectacle from the late master of gruesome Italian horror Lucio Fulci, was made in 1979 and presented as a semi-sequel to George Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead from the previous year, (Dawn was released in parts of Europe as Zombie – Fulci’s film was known there as Zombie 2) though the films aren’t at all connected. Tisa Farrow and a group of vacationing tourists travel to an island where they find a doctor (Richard Johnson) who is attempting to cure a condition that reanimates the dead. Things quickly get out of control as undead Spanish conquistadors crawl from their graves hungry for human flesh. All this undead mayhem is highlighted by nauseatingly graphic set-pieces by make-up maestro Gianetto de Rossi. Zombie is an incredibly well-made shocker that was enormously popular worldwide and in many ways has aged better than the Romero film (it’s certainly scarier...

Lucio Fulci's Zombie coming to theaters and Blu-ray/DVD
I remember watching Fulci's Zombie when it arrived on instant Netflix for the first time in 2009. As a fan of George Romero's zombie movies I was not sure how I would feel about a film that was called by many as the unofficial sequel to Dawn of the Dead. When I watched it I fell in love with the look and feel of this movie and can say that this is a must-watch zombie film. The film is set to get a re-release in theaters and an amazing Blu-ray release. Keep reading for more information.

Lucio Fulci’s Zombie coming to Blu-ray!
There’s just something sticky and icky about Lucio Fulci’s 1981 gorefest in Zombie, which is loosely a follow-up to the events in Dawn of the Dead. The gore is outrageous. The zombies are nasty decaying corpses. The women have nice boobs and big bushes, and of course: there’s a sequence that pits a zombie against a shark!

And, finally, Blue Underground is bringing this bad mama-jama to HD for the first time ever on October 25th.

Here’s the details:

In Italy, it was considered the ‘unofficial sequel’ to Dawn Of The Dead. In England, it was known as Zombie Flesh Eaters and banned as obscene. In America, it was called Zombie and advertised with the depraved tag line “We Are Going To Eat You!” Tisa Farrow (The Grim Reaper), Ian McCulloch (Contamination), Al Cliver (Cannibals), and Richard Johnson (The Haunting) star in this worldwide splatter sensation directed...

The Sinister Eyes of Dr. Orloff (1973) – DVD Review
The Film:

With over 200 films to his resume, Jess Franco certainly has enough films to devise a few best of’s and worst of’s. But one title most Franco fans haven’t seen to place on either list is 1973′s The Sinister Eyes of Dr. Orloff. Newly founded Intervision Pictures Corp. has issued this rare Spanish film for its first U.S. DVD release, which is an event amongst itself, really, and now fans can see this “lost” Franco film. Where does it stand? In the middle.

To me, Franco works best within the sexploitation genre. He just has a pornographic eye that makes his erotic/sexploitation films feel more sexual than most. But it’s when he dabbles in other genres that sometimes he loses himself in the worst ways as Cannibals is any example. But his Dr. Orloff series remains one of the most loved amongst fans,...

Video Home Invasion: Severin Film's Blood Spattered Bounty
For this, a very special Halloween edition of Video Home Invasion, we're going to take a look at Severin Films lovely collection of rare and unsettling cult horror films.  I love horror movies as much as the next guy, but many of these titles had me scratching my head.  The Sinful Dwarf, while not strictly horror, is certainly horrifying.  Crucible of Terror is a blip in horror history, but a landmark in the career of Mike Raven.  Then there are the lesser known works of Lucio Fulci, a personal favorite.  Many films that deserve to be viewed at least once, given perhaps more recognition and attention than they sometimes deserve by a company dedicated to bringing evil into your home.

Lucio Fulci is a master of horror who is, by far, best known for his sizable and reputable collection of zombie films.  However, he did make other films as well,...

Video Home Invasion: Severin Films Immoral Tales
One of the formative events in my journey toward cinephilia was finding a copy of Cathal Tohill and Pete Tombs' invaluable text on European art film and sexploitation, Immoral Tales.  I would open it randomly to a page almost daily and find some of the most interesting sounding films at my fingertips.  I haven't yet managed to watch all of them, I man never manage that, but it gave me a point of departure for exploring the very specific type of of film really only made in Europe in the late 50's through the 70's.  The auteurs given greatest attention in the boook have turned out to be some of my favorites, the kind of people who could make a sexy horror or fantasy film that felt like a work of art.  Sure, some of them were trashy, many of them were over the top, and some even were pornographic,...
