The director’s 1993 film Abraham’s Valley will have a special screening in Directors’ Fortnight this year.

Paris-based sales company Luxbox has acquired 13 titles from the catalogue of the late Portugese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira.

The films span the director’s first feature 1942’s Aniki Bóbó through 1993’s Abraham’s Valley. The latter will be given a special screening at the upcoming Directors’ Fortnight. The Cannes sidebar also pays tribute to the director with its 2023 poster and features an image of Portuguese actress Leonor Silveira in tribute to Abraham’s Valley and celebrates the 30th anniversary of its selection at Directors’ Fortnight that year.

After George Romero’s remarkable international success with Dawn of the Dead (entitled Zombi in Italy), the Italians, always ready to hop on the celluloid bandwagon, rushed to churn out tons of unofficial sequels to the film as well as their own originals, just so long as “zombie,” “living dead,” or something similar was featured in the title. Thus, we have films such as Hell of the Living Dead, Burial Ground, and Zombi Holocaust, as well as the “sort-of” zombie film, Nightmare City, along with many others. But the first of the zombie films to hit theaters after Dawn of the Dead was Zombie.

Well, horror fans, we have only a few releases on hand for November 29th. So this Tuesday, get ready for the Blu-ray and DVD arrival of Fede Alvarez’s latest excursion in terror, Don’t Breathe.

Vinegar Syndrome will also be releasing the kung-fu horror film Death Machines on home media this Tuesday, and Raro Video USA will unleash Umberto Lenzi's cannibal film Sacrifice! on Blu-ray as well.

It looks like the horror Blu-ray and DVD front picks back up again on December 6th, so be sure to keep an eye out for more titles next week.

Lina Romay, a pretty brunette who starred in numerous risqué features for longtime companion Jesus Franco, has died. According to online reports, Romay died of cancer on February 15. She was 57. Born Rosa María Almirall Martínez in Barcelona on June 25, 1954, Romay began her film career while in her late teens. The source for her artistic name was another Lina Romay, a singer with Xavier Cugat's band who had featured roles in movies such as Love Laughs at Andy Hardy and Joe Palooka in the Big Fight. (This Lina Romay died at age 91 in December 2010 in the L.A. suburb of Pasadena.) The Spanish Lina Romay's movies, however, were anything but G-rated fare. Her gialli and erotica efforts had titles such as Tender and Perverse Emanuelle (1973), Justine and the Whip (1979), The White Slave (1985), and Alone Against Terror (1987). From the early '70s to 2005, she was featured in more than 100 productions.

The Tuesday before Halloween is bound to have a lot of genre titles. I remember watching Fulci's Zombie when it arrived on instant Netflix for the first time in 2009. As a fan of George Romero's zombie movies I was not sure how I would feel about a film that was called by many as the unofficial sequel to Dawn of the Dead. When I watched it I fell in love with the look and feel of this movie and can say that this is a must-watch zombie film. Normally, our shows are the first full weekend of every month but we couldn’t pass this one up. Plus, who would complain about two shows in October, a month when everyone is in the mood for horror. There’s just something sticky and icky about Lucio Fulci’s 1981 gorefest in Zombie, which is loosely a follow-up to the events in Dawn of the Dead. The gore is outrageous. The zombies are nasty decaying corpses. The women have nice boobs and big bushes, and of course: there’s a sequence that pits a zombie against a shark!

And, finally, Blue Underground is bringing this bad mama-jama to HD for the first time ever on October 25th.

With over 200 films to his resume, Jess Franco certainly has enough films to devise a few best of’s and worst of’s. But one title most Franco fans haven’t seen to place on either list is 1973′s The Sinister Eyes of Dr. Orloff. Newly founded Intervision Pictures Corp. has issued this rare Spanish film for its first U.S. DVD release, which is an event amongst itself, really, and now fans can see this “lost” Franco film. Where does it stand? In the middle.

For this, a very special Halloween edition of Video Home Invasion, we're going to take a look at Severin Films lovely collection of rare and unsettling cult horror films.  I love horror movies as much as the next guy, but many of these titles had me scratching my head.  The Sinful Dwarf, while not strictly horror, is certainly horrifying.  Crucible of Terror is a blip in horror history, but a landmark in the career of Mike Raven.  Then there are the lesser known works of Lucio Fulci, a personal favorite.  Many films that deserve to be viewed at least once, given perhaps more recognition and attention than they sometimes deserve by a company dedicated to bringing evil into your home.
