Her father is a dentist. In summer 2019, she took a brief hiatus from acting and worked as a dental assistant at her father's clinic. She said that the worst part of the job was dealing with the various bad smells.

Her first onscreen kiss was with Nicholas Alexander Chavez, her co-star on Hospital General (1963).

In addition to acting, she is a trained stunt performer. During her final scene as Esme Prince on Hospital General (1963) before she exited the show in 2024, stunt doubles were hired for Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Spencer Cassadine) and Tabyana Ali (Trina Robinson), while Avery performed her own stunts.

Her father attended college with actor Rodney Van Johnson, who appeared on Passions (1999) alongside Brook Kerr, Avery's co-star on Hospital General (1963). Van Johnson gave Avery some tips for starring on a soap opera after Avery was cast as Esme Prince.
