His father is a retired Air Force Colonel with 26 years of service, paternal grandfather was a retired Navy chief with 46 years of service, and his maternal grandfather was a retired Army Colonel with 25 years of service.

Played soccer from age 6 on, eventually playing NCAA division II for St. Mary's University. He also played for an American club that traveled to England and played in several international tournaments.

After college soccer practice one day while sitting alone in the cafeteria, saw an advertisement for the theater department holding open auditions for Shakespeare's "The Taming of The Shrew". Later that day, and with no previous acting experience, he auditioned and landed the role of Petruchio.

Lived at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines (where his father was stationed) in 1991 when the colossal eruption of Mount Pinatubo occurred, was subsequently evacuated to Subic Naval Base on the west coast of the main island of Luzon at the same time Typhoon Yunya was making landfall. Was put on board the American aircraft carrier USS Lincoln and shipped to the island of Cebu before flying back to the U.S. in the cargo hold of C-141.
