The first photos from the set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in Glasgow, Scotland, have swung online, and they reveal when the movie takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's timeline.

As you can see below, signage has been put up indicating that construction is taking place on a building in New York that's set to be completed in "December 2027." The events of Captain America: Brave New World played out across 2026 and 2027, with Thunderbolts* then set in 2027.

The latter movie's post-credits scene jumped into the events of Avengers: Doomsday with a "14 Months Later" title card, placing the movie in 2028/2029. It's been a long time coming, but Marvel Studios has finally added Reed Richards and the gang to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the release of "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," Kevin Feige and Co. have not only finally brought Marvel's first family back to the silver screen, but they've also secured a much-needed hit in the process.

Directed by Matt Shakman, of "WandaVision" fame, "First Steps" had by far the biggest opening weekend ever for the "Fantastic Four" franchise. It debuted to an estimated $118 million domestically to go with $100 million overseas for a $218 million global debut. It's very much the win that Marvel and Disney needed after the relative misfires that were "Captain America: Brave New World" ($415 million worldwide) and "Thunderbolts*" ($382 million worldwide). This is, if you'll pardon the pun, a heroic opening weekend much more in line with what we used to expect from the MCU.

Marvel’s new version of Fantastic Four is already a massive win at the box office. The movie, officially titled Fantastic Four: First Steps, made $118 million in its first weekend across over 4,000 theaters in North America. That’s according to Sunday estimates from the studio.

It didn’t just do well domestically. Overseas, it pulled in another $100 million across 52 different markets. Altogether, that’s a huge $218 million global debut, well ahead of the last attempt at a Fantastic Four movie.

For context, the 2015 version of Fantastic Four made only $167.9 million during its entire time in theaters. That includes both U.S. and international ticket sales. The new movie beat that in just three days.

Even before opening weekend, expectations were high. As of July 22, the movie was projected to bring in between $100 and $110 million domestically, with another $90 to $110 million internationally.

The Fantastic Four are comic book characters that make perfect sense on the pages of "the world's greatest comic magazine," as the Stan Lee slogan has said on Ff covers for decades. Cinematically, they're much trickier. That's because the history of superheroes on screen is distinct from their history in comics, and comic book movies established themselves early on as stories about singular heroes. When the first big comic book movie about a team of heroes occurred with 2000's "X-Men," a new dynamic was established, one which built upon "men on a mission" movies of the past (like "The Dirty Dozen") and eventually developed into films like "The Avengers." The Fantastic Four, as seen in the comics, were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as a space-age answer to a then-popular trend of movies and shows that chronicled the adventures of tight-knit family units.

Studios are trying to figure out how to have success at the box office while also prioritizing streaming services, which are undoubtedly the future. Netflix generated more revenue in 2024 than the global box office in its entirety. Marvel Studios, once a dominant force at the box office, isn't immune to the need for change, and a lot of that change is about finding ways to make movies cheaper. Interestingly, an underseen sci-fi movie from 2023 is helping them solve that equation.

During an interview with Phase Hero, filmmaker Matt Shakman confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. was the one wearing that green cloak for the sequence (which was shot on the set of Avengers: Doomsday by the Russo Brothers).

Now, The Cosmic Circus' Alex Perez is claiming that Downey's Victor Von Doom hails from Earth-828, the same reality as Marvel's First Family. He also says that Marvel Studios has "cooked" with the villain's MCU costume.

It makes sense for Doom to be from the same reality as the Fantastic Four because it gives them a built-in history with the villain, and means the team can deliver some handy exposition when they meet the Avengers.

While Marvel Studios usually starts filming with a complete script, it's never considered the 'final' or 'final draft' of the script.

According to studio president Kevin Feige, their creative process involves constant tweaking and improvements, which he calls "plussing, "throughout filming.

It’s hard to remember, but as 2023 began, the plan for Phase Five of the MCU seemed set in stone. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania would be the grand debut of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, the long-standing time-traveling tyrant of Marvel Comics. Critics had their say on The Fantastic Four: First Steps earlier this week, and following an early international release and Thursday previews, fans and moviegoers are finally weighing in on the Marvel Studios reboot.

With over 2500 verified ratings on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has an excellent 93% score. That's higher than Superman (92%), the same as Thunderbolts* (93%), and quite a bit above Captain America: Brave New World (76%).

The movie's Tomatometer score currently sits at 88% based on 235 reviews. While Thunderbolts* received a similar level of acclaim, it also failed to crack $400 million at the worldwide box office.

Fortunately, there appears to be far more interest in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Marvel Studios has successfully marketed it as an event movie, and as a largely standalone tale set on a separate Earth, it's likely to be a far more welcoming prospect than a feature led by streaming characters (Marvel...
