Almost every cops film that followed Govinda Nihalani’s hardhitting edgy drama Ardh Satya owes an allegiance to Ardh Satya in one way or another. The stunning film was released during the year when Jeetendra’s Hyderabad-cooked sambhar-dramas Himmatwala, Mawaali and Justice Chowdhary ruled the boxoffice. Long before I understood the tragedy of Jack and Rose in “Titanic,” I had been cleared to watch the film’s entire second half and ship-sinking in real time. I have a distinct and fairly scarring memory of watching Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) get dragged through 1885 Hill Valley by the neck long before I properly consumed the “Back to the Future” trilogy. I watched Andy (Tim Robbins) dig his way through excrement completely devoid of context in “The Shawshank Redemption” (though admittedly the context did not soothe me).

1. ‘Bekhudi mein sanam utth gaye jo Kadam’ (Haseena Maan Jayegi): Prakash Mehra’s first directorial starred not Amitabh Bachchan but Shashi Kapoor. And it was a superhit. The songs by Kalyanji-Anandji played a large hand in its success. This dulcet Lata-Rafi duet has lingered in music lovers’ minds and hearts forever and a day.
