In Monsoonal Melodies, Subhash K Jha shares his selections for the 10 best rain songs, classics that you must listen too.
1. ‘Bheegi bheegi raaton mein meethi meethi baton mein aisi barasataon mein’ (Ajnabee):
The combination of Rajesh Khanna and R D Burman was always special. Throw Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar into this rain-soaked romantic number. And you will be compelled to ask along with the singer…Kaisa lagta hai…huh?
2.’Rimjhim ke geet saawan gaaye bheegi beegi raaton mein’ (Anjaana) :
Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi get together for the mother of monsoonal melodies. Soaked in seductiveness wrapped in erotica, the singers make the monsoon a witness to their passion. Nature never seemed more participative. It’s another matter that Rajendra Kumar and Babita looked as passionate together as two blocks of chopped wood waiting to be transported to a paper factory.
3. ‘Saawan ke jhoole pade tum chale aao’ (Jurmana...

In This Day That Year installment, Subhash K Jha takes a look back at Govind Nihalani’s Ardh Satya which released in 1983.
Almost every cops film that followed Govinda Nihalani’s hardhitting edgy drama Ardh Satya owes an allegiance to Ardh Satya in one way or another. The stunning film was released during the year when Jeetendra’s Hyderabad-cooked sambhar-dramas Himmatwala, Mawaali and Justice Chowdhary ruled the boxoffice. It was also the year when Rajesh Khanna had his last spate of hits as a leading man in Avtaar, Agar Tum Na Hote and Souten.
And yes, as far as cops dramas in commercial cinema are concerned there was Andha Kanoon in 1983 where Hema Malini played a cop. This was certainly no year for a brutal unrelentingly intense study of crime, punishment, the law, and its subversion by powerful goons and politicians.
The eminent playwright Vijay Tendulkar whose speciality were works...

We didn’t always watch classic movies the traditional way in my house.
Long before I understood the tragedy of Jack and Rose in “Titanic,” I had been cleared to watch the film’s entire second half and ship-sinking in real time. I have a distinct and fairly scarring memory of watching Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) get dragged through 1885 Hill Valley by the neck long before I properly consumed the “Back to the Future” trilogy. I watched Andy (Tim Robbins) dig his way through excrement completely devoid of context in “The Shawshank Redemption” (though admittedly the context did not soothe me).
So when it came to Ramesh Sippy’s “Sholay,” the classic Western that transformed Hindi cinema, of course I started with the alternate ending.
“Sholay” follows two small-town criminals, Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra), who are enlisted by former police inspector Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) to...

Aamir Khan & Rajinikanth’s First Film Together Was A Godfather Remake That Flopped (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Veteran actors Aamir Khan and Rajinikanth both have massive fan followings and have delivered numerous blockbusters throughout their careers. After starring in the heartwarming sports drama Sitaare Zameen Par, the perfectionist actor made a brief yet impactful appearance in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s action thriller Coolie, starring the one and only Rajinikanth. Aamir Khan reportedly (via India Today) did not charge a single rupee for his role in the film.

Subhash K Jha in a special edition of his This day That Year feature series focusses on not one but two films… Ramesh Sippy’s classic Sholay that released in 1975 and the 2007 remake by Ram Gopal Varma titled Aag.
Ram Gopal Varma’s Aag is the worst re-make you’re likely to see.Ram Gopal Varma’s remake of Sholay doesn’t claim to have the wherewithal, the stock, substance and spice of Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay.
Let’s just call Aag an audacious revisionist version of “Sholay” and be done with it. The biggest mistake we can make while watching Varma go back to his favourite film is to look for signs and symbols from the past. Varma is to blame for doing some sequences as parodic homages to Sippy’s Sholay. Bachchan as Babban does the ‘Kitne aadmi the’ scene like a rude game of Russian roulette with...

Sholay’s Rarely Seen Ending To Be Shown After Decades(Photo Credit –YouTube)
Everyone remembers the 1975 classic Sholay for its legendary characters, gripping climax, and timeless appeal. But did you know the ending you saw wasn’t originally planned? Director Ramesh Sippy had to change it before release.
The film gave us unforgettable moments — from “Arre o Samba, kitne aadmi the?” to “Tumhara naam kya hai, Basanti?” — yet the real twist lay behind the scenes, in how Gabbar Singh’s fate was altered at the very last moment.
How Did Sholay Originally End?
Sholay’s original ending had Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) jumping dramatically and impaling the villainous dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan), thus killing him. However, this was changed due to censorship concerns during the Emergency period in India. Just days before the film’s scheduled release, the Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) intervened. Looking back at the real and the reel life of the late Sridevi, Subhash K Jha celebrates her pitch-perfect acting in the many excellent performance on film, saying there will never be another like her.
On August 13, Sridevi would have turned 62.
Sridevi could have married anyone. Like her Southern predecessor, Hema Malini, she chose a married man with two children.
Sridevi never looked back. “It was Boneyji and no one else for me. I felt protected and loved in his company. He took care of me before marriage. I was sure he would take care of me after marriage,” she once let me into her personal thoughts.
Soon after her marriage and the birth of her firstborn, Janhvi, Sridevi’s Judaai hit the screen. In the first week, it was summarily rejected as trash, which , admittedly, it was. But here is the thing: Sridevi’s career’s best performance is in this junk film.

Arguably the most beautiful Indian actress of all times, Hema Malini has some truly lavish compliments to pay to her colleague Rekha whose signature film Umrao Jaan was re-released this week.
In an exclusive conversation with this writer Hema Malini says, “Rekha is a friend. It’s not like we meet every day or anything. But whenever we do meet, there is a lot of love between us. She is someone I’ve known since her childhood. When she invited me to come for the premiere of Umrao Jaan I said yes immediately.”
And what did the nation’s Dream Girl think of Rekha’s Umrao Jaan? “Rekha looks so beautiful in Umrao Jaan! Her clothes, her makeup the way she expresses the character’s emotions , the way she recites the poetry. Rekha was born to play Umrao Jaan. I don’t think anyone could have done the character so much justice.

The legendary Bollywood epic “Sholay” will receive a fitting golden anniversary tribute when its fully restored, uncut version gets its world premiere at Italy’s Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival on June 27.
The 1975 Ramesh Sippy-directed classic will unspool on the festival’s massive open-air screen in Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore, marking the first time audiences will see the original ending and previously deleted scenes that were cut from the widely distributed theatrical version.
Written by the legendary duo Salim-Javed, “Sholay” masterfully blends action, thriller, revenge drama, comedy and tragedy, all underscored by R.D. Burman’s iconic musical score. The film drew inspiration from Western classics including Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in the West,” Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai,” and John Sturges’ “The Magnificent Seven.”

To celebrate the iconic actress’s birthday, Subhash K Jha lists the six films featuring Dimple Kapadia’s best performances. As a bonus, we hear from directors, actors, and more on what it is like to work with her reel and real!
Kaash (1987):
Mahesh Bhatt’s powerful drama about an estranged couple coming together for the sake of their dying son, had Dimple pulling out all stops. Says Mahesh Bhatt, “Dimple Kapadia is the most generous Indian actress I have worked with. Our journey began with an unusual film called Kaash, which dealt with the bitter truth of life, that ultimately, you have to part with all that you love. The story revolved around a separated husband and wife (played by Jackie Shroff and Dimple Kapadia) who come together to fulfill the last three wishes of their terminally ill child, and how their relationship evolves through this painful experience.

Subhash K Jha lists the best performances by Girish Karnad in this special feature.
He was a man of many talents: scholar, academician, activist, political commentator, theatre and film actor. But Bollywood knows him for his understated performances in unforgettable films in the 1970s and 80s, which changed the way we look at mainstream acting. Here’s a list of his best Bollywood films.
1. Nishant (1975): Playing the docile, helpless school teacher whose wife (Shabana Azmi) is abducted by the village zamindar, Karnad brought dignity and restraint into a situation which screamed for dramatic eruptions. Karnad never overacted. He was measured at a time when drama flourished.
2. Swami (1977): This was the second film where Girish Karnad starred as the silent, undemanding, doting spouse to Shabana Azmi, and this time he was even more of a brilliant projectile, hitting the right emotions. In this superb adaptation of Saratchandra Chatterjee’s novel,...

Subhash K Jha turns the focus to the chartbusting songs in Prakash Mehra’s myriad of excellent films.
1. ‘Bekhudi mein sanam utth gaye jo Kadam’ (Haseena Maan Jayegi): Prakash Mehra’s first directorial starred not Amitabh Bachchan but Shashi Kapoor. And it was a superhit. The songs by Kalyanji-Anandji played a large hand in its success. This dulcet Lata-Rafi duet has lingered in music lovers’ minds and hearts forever and a day. Says Anandji, “Prakash Mehra and us, my brother Kalyanji and I, worked closely together. Even before we did the music for his first directorial venture Haseena Maan Jayegi, we worked with him when he was an assistant to filmmaker Mohan Segal. Tab se hum saath mein rahe. Ek tuning ban gayi thi… We had a good rapport. Prakash Mehra also wrote some songs for us in Purnima. And when he turned producer with Zanjeer, we did the music.
Poonam Dhillon speaks with Subhash K Jha about 30 years since she debuted on the big screen with Yash Chopra’s drama Trishul, which starred of Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Raakhee Gulzar, Gita Siddharth and Sachin.
It is 30 years of your debut film Trishul?
Wow, so many years have passed!!! I was a 15-year-old kid who had just taken the 10th standard exam. I knew nothing about acting, screen, or stars at that time, having seen only probably 4 to 5 films in my life.
Which films had you seen before?
Dosti many times at all Children’s Day celebrations in school), Guddi, Mera Naam Joker, and I think maybe a few more. That’s it. I was super-shy and awkward and had no idea What Huge stars I was working with. This was the zamana before the internet and Instagram.
Your song in Lataji’s voice, ‘Gapuchi’ was a big hit?...

Indian filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh, who is well-known for directing terrific thrillers like Kahaani, Jaane Jaan, and Badla, took to his social media platform earlier today. In his X (Twitter) post, he recollected an old yet interesting incident from the year 1989 when he wrote to ‘The Apu Trilogy’ director Satyajit Ray asking for a job. He further confessed that in the letter, he wrote that he was willing to do any job provided he (Satyajit Ray) would teach me how to draw. Because he loved Ray’s illustrations and the stories he wrote and told.
Sujoy Ghosh’s First Rejection
Incredibly, Satyajit Ray was courteous and humble enough to send a reply to a stranger asking for a job. You can read the contents of the letter written by Satyajit Ray to Sujoy Ghosh here.
let me tell you a story of rejection.

It drew representatives from 90 countries and over 10,000 delegates to Mumbai, reflecting what Ambani, chair of Reliance Industries, which operates the country’s largest streamer – JioHotstar – called the spirit of a new India determined to surpass global standards.
Modi’s presence, despite recent security challenges following what Ambani referenced as “the barbaric terror attack,” in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, underscored the government’s commitment to establishing India’s creative industries as a strategic national priority.

The diva shared, “I was sitting at the movie’s premier holding my mother’s hand. It’s a Yash Chopra film, so the whole world would be watching it. I enjoyed it a lot. Celebrating Lara Dutta on her birthday as Subhash K Jha shines a special spotlight on her career. We hear from the actress about being an actress in Bollywood, plus Suneel Darsha, director of her debut film, gives some behind-the-scenes scoop from the set.
She was named Lara after the heroine in her mother’s favourite film Dr Zhivago. In an industry of hyper-hypocrisy, she was honest. No false smiles, no sucking up to directors and heroes. No compromises: Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta started off together in my friend Suneel Darshan’s Andaaz. Between the two, I thought Lara was going to be the big star. She had the better role in Andaaz, and she went on to give some good performances in films like Dilli Chalo, Billu, and David. But her career never took off in the way it should have.

Vicky Kaushal Chhaava Controversy ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Following a successful theatrical release, Vicky Kaushal’s highly anticipated historical drama Chhaava went live on Netflix on April 11, 2025. The film cast Vicky Kaushal as one of the fiercest Maratha warriors, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, and remained one of the most awaited Ott releases of the month.
Although the movie’s arrival on the Ott platform was welcomed with anticipation, many of the audience, mainly Telugu-speaking audiences, were left disheartened by the lack of regional language support.
Missing Telugu Dub Leaves Fans Frustrated
The crux of the issue arises from Netflix releasing Chhaava only in Hindi while the film saw a theatrical release in both Hindi and Telugu. This has left many fans, especially from Telugu-speaking backgrounds, feeling neglected. One heightens the absurdity of it all when considering how Rashmika Mandanna is a major face of the film and has a considerable fan following in Telugu-speaking domains.

Ajay Devgn Cliff Stunt In Dhamaal 4! (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The production of Dhamaal 4 recently encountered a significant challenge involving a high-risk action sequence. Originally planned to be executed using visual effects (VFX) due to safety concerns, the scene’s approach was reconsidered by director Indra Kumar and lead actor Ajay Devgn. The sequence reportedly involves Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh, and Jaaved Jaaferi hanging from a cliff. They proposed performing the stunt live to add a greater sense of realism to the film.
This decision raised safety concerns among the cast, particularly Arshad Warsi, who was slated to perform the most perilous aspects of the stunt. He expressed hesitation about the risks involved in executing the scene without VFX support.
A source revealed (Via Mid-Day), “It wasn’t supposed to be a live-action sequence because the location can be precarious. However, a few days before the shoot,...

In a special This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha shares memories of his dear friend Rituparno Ghosh and his movie career including Memories In March.
By the time Rituparno Ghosh showed up as a man grieving for his dead partner in Sanjay Nag’s Memories In March, released on April 1, 2011, he had turned cinema into a weapon of anguished anger about his sexuality.
Bereavement and memories are a great high for celluloid drama. Some of the most poignant and memorable films of our times have tapped into the wounds of grief for creative juices and emerged trumps at the box office. Think of Meena Kumari mourning for her impotent marriage in Guru Dutt’s Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam or Supriya Choudhury’s smothered screams of protest for her wasted life in Ritwick Ghatak’s Meghe Dhaka Tara, or more recently, Nicole Kidman blaming the world around her for remaining...

When Hema Malini Supported Esha Deol Slapping Amrita Rao(Photo Credit –Instagram/Facebook)
Stories of nasty catfights between Bollywood actresses are not unheard of. One such incident occurred on the set of the 2006 film Pyare Mohan, wherein the lead actress Esha Deol slapped her co-star Amrita Rao on the set of the film. However, did you know that not only was Esha unapologetic about the same but her mother, the legendary actress-politician Hema Malini also supported her daughter for the same.
In a throwback interaction with host Rajat Sharma in his show Aap Ki Adalat, he had quipped Esha Deol on her admitting to slap her Pyare Mohan co-star Amrita Rao. On this, the Dhoom actress unapologetically said, “Kisi ne agar kuch galat kiya aur hum baaton se unhe samjha nahi paate hain, toh.” However, her mother Hema Malini who also graced the show along with her daughter, jumped to her defense.

Many cineastes think Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is the most influential film of all times. I would have to go with that. So would Feroz Khan, who’s been in two of the worst Godfather-influenced films of all time. Here’s saluting The Godfather clones, good, bad and the awful.
1. Dharmatma (1975):
Feroz Khan was always ahead of his time. So, it’s no surprise that he was the first Bollywood filmmaker to jump on the The Godfather bandwagon with this wildly out-of-control remake—an almost scene-by-scene reaffirmation of the original with Feroz playing Al Pacino and Premnath as Marlon Brando. A laughably crude homage to the original, the silver lining was the beauteous Hema Malini as Reshma, the exotic Afghani lass whom Michael, sorry Feroz, falls in love with. Hema dancing to Lataji’s ‘Mere galiyon se logon ki yaari ho gayi’ would have probably given Coppola...

When Dharmendra Was Left Angry After Sanjeev Kumar Proposed Hema Malini(Photo Credit –YouTube/Facebook)
The 1975 film Sholay is considered to be one of the most timeless movies of Indian cinema. However, the set of the movie did have its own share of drama. It was not a hidden fact lead actors Dharmendra and Hema Malini were in a relationship during the shooting of the same. But, not many know that actor Sanjeev Kumar who played Thakur in the same, was also smitten by Malini’s beauty and had proposed to her marriage on the sets of the film. This had raised the temperature on the set by several notches.
According to Bollywood Shaadi, Sanjeev Kumar had earlier asked Hema Malini’s hand for marriage to her parents in the early 70s. However, both the actress and her parents turned down his request, leaving him heartbroken. This also reportedly caused...

It takes a lot of willpower and grace to remain oneself even after stardom hits you. I have seen success affect actors in two ways. They either change completely or pretend not to change.
Alia Bhatt is the exception. She has not changed one bit since she sashayed into sight in swirl of girlie poise in Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year in 2012. Alia was not only Student Of The Year — She was the whole school. Endowed with the kind of natural talent and fresh beauty that I saw in Lucille Ball and Sridevi, Alia was just the antidote to the syntheticity that had crept into Bollywood ever since the norm and benchmark for feminine persuasiveness became how much and how frequently an actress is seen on social media.
Like Tiger Shroff, Alia Bhatt was treated as a bit of a joke on social media when she started. I...

While I am still trying to figure what Iifa means by giving the two actresses from Laapata Ladies the Best Actress and the Best Debutante awards, I am yet to understand why one of the best films of 2024, if not The best, Do Aur Do Pyaar was completely obliterated from the awards.
Forget winning; Applause Entertainment’s Do Aur Do Pyaar didn’t even get nominated in any of the categories. So, were the Iifa awards only celebrating the successful films of the past year?
If so, imagine what would have happened to Guru Dutt’s Kagaz Ke Phool or Raj Kapoor’s Mera Naam Joker.
Do Aur Do Pyaar is a far superior work to almost every film we’ve seen in 2024. It is breezy and lighthearted, but never frivolous. Director Shirsha Guha Thakurta dives deep into a marriage in crisis. Miraculously, she finds a lot of laughter and humour in the crisis.
