Stars: Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Joe Tippett, Eriko Hatsune, Scoot McNairy | Written by James Mangold, Jay Cocks, Elijah Wald | Directed by James Mangold

The biopic has been a genre around since the early days of filmmaking, and over the course of more than 100 years, it has changed drastically with every passing decade. In the early 2000s the genre, in particular the musical biopic, hit somewhat of a snag. It got caught up in formulaic storytelling and became a parody of itself. So much so that the 2007 film Walk Hard made fun of the formula so much it ruined the genre forever. However, some films still missed the joke and went ahead and followed the formula anyway, such as 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody. The formula itself reduced the artist’s life to their Wikipedia page. Often opening with the film’s subject ready to take the stage of one of their famous performances,...

This Comedian Was the Top Choice to Host the First ‘SNL’ (And It Wasn’t George Carlin)
Image
In the movie Saturday Night, the show’s first host, George Carlin, proves himself to be quite the a-hole, snorting coke in his dressing room, refusing at the last minute to appear in sketches and eating Billy Crystal’s props.

Even by Carlin’s own admission, Saturday Night didn’t stray far from the truth. The comedian performed the wrong bits during SNL’s first live show, plugged his album when he was asked not to and visibly ground his jaw on live television due to an excess of cocaine.

Play

All of the antics had to gall Lorne Michaels. Even though Carlin was a stand-up superstar in 1975, he wasn’t the producer’s first choice for the show’s inaugural host. The comedian “was slightly older than us, a little more jazz-influenced, a little different music,” Michaels said later, according to Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live.

Grammy Winner Janis Ian On Career That Began At Age 14, And Bonds With Janis Joplin, Pete Seeger, Nina Simone & More
Image
Singer-songwriter-musician Janis Ian celebrates her 74th birthday today.

For most of those years, 60 of them in fact, she has been famous, having rocketed to renown at age 14 with her precocious debut single “Society’s Child,” a song about what was at the time the very taboo subject of an interracial romance. As she enters her mid-70s, Ian is the focus of the new documentary Janis Ian: Breaking Silence, a film directed by Varda Bar-Kar that charts the remarkable trajectory of her life and career.

Bar-Kar (Fandango at the Wall) says the inspiration to make the film came after a period of personal reflection.

Janis Ian and director Varda-Bar-Kar on March 28, 2025 in New York City

“I started to think about my own identity and whether I feel represented in film and media. And I decided that I don’t,” she explained at a Q&a following a showing of the...

How playing Ronnie Spector could earn Zendaya her first Oscar nomination
Image
As it turns out, Zendaya would never let go of playing Ronnie Spector. Five years after it was announced that the Emmy Award-winning Euphoria star would embody the Ronettes lead singer in a feature film, Deadline reported on Wednesday that the A24 project had secured a new director in Oscar winner Barry Jenkins. Dave Kajganich, a frequent Luca Guadagnino collaborator, is now writing the screenplay after Pulitzer Prize winner Jackie Sibblies Drury was initially mentioned as a possible screenwriter in 2020 when the project was first announced.

Deadline offered no timeline for the Spector film, but it’s safe to assume it’ll be a while. Jenkins was recently attached to direct a science-fiction movie for Universal with Glen Powell in a lead role. At the same time, Zendaya is seemingly constantly busy and now filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. However, whenever the project comes to fruition and lands an actual release date,...

See Timothée Chalamet go electric as Bob Dylan in ‘A Complete Unknown’
Image
Timothée Chalamet stars as the folk legend in this Oscar-nominated biopic, now streaming on Hulu.

I love a good biopic — especially when it digs into music history. There’s just something about tracing the roots of a sound or an artist that hits deeper than your average rise-and-fall story. “A Complete Unknown” is the latest to do just that, turning the early days of Bob Dylan into a full-on cinematic experience. Directed by James Mangold and starring Timothée Chalamet as Dylan himself, this one zeroes in on the moment he shocked the folk world by plugging in and going electric. Whether you’re a Dylan diehard or just here for the awards buzz, “A Complete Unknown” is worth queuing up. You can stream it starting Thursday, March 27 on Hulu.

A Complete Unknown Will Stream On Hulu March 27
James Mangold in Logan (2017)
Tantalized by the buzz around James Mangold‘s historical rock drama A Complete Unknown? By the end of the month all you’ll need to see it is a Hulu subscription. It’s been announced for a March 27 streaming debut. The title itself is referring to its subject, Bob Dylan…one of the most iconic rock and roll artists of all time, and certainly not an unknown person. Yet there was a time when nobody knew who Dylan was. He arrived in 1961 New York at just nineteen, hailing from Minnesota, and he knew no one either. As luck would have it, he would not only land bigger and bigger gigs but form friendships along the way with other future music stars, like Pete Seeger and Joan Baez. Timothée Chalamet stars as Bob Dylan, alongside Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook...

Judgment day is nigh!

Awards season is so long that America was able to become a crypto-fascist autocracy faster than Hollywood was able to decide which “Emilia Pérez” song Diane Warren should lose to, but good news: At least one of those things will all be over by the end of the weekend.

The votes have been cast, the campaigns have been campainful, and the predictions have been made and, then re-made, and then scrambled by the SAG Awards at the last second. At this point all that’s left is to hand...

‘The Daily Show’s Desi Lydic Cringes at Musical Protests Against Trump: ‘Had to Cleanse My Ears With an Rfk Jr. Speech’ | Video
Image
As Donald Trump and Elon Musk continue gutting federal programs and increasing unemployment numbers as a result, protests have sprung up around the country, with some of them even getting musical. Although, it hasn’t been good music, if you ask “The Daily Show” host Desi Lydic.

During Thursday night’s headlines, the Comedy Central star first zeroed in on a recent Capitol Hill protest by federal workers, in which they sang Pete Seeger’s “Which Side Are You On?” with slightly modified lyrics. Of course, these weren’t professional singers, so hitting the right notes was a less than successful endeavor.

“Which key are we on?” Lydic sang intentionally poorly. “Sorry, but that sounded so bad I had to cleanse my ears with an Rfk Jr. speech.”

Lydic then begged to see a protest that didn’t involve singing, at which point footage from another musical protest, this one at the Kennedy Center,...

Anonymous Oscar Ballot 2025: Costume Designer Votes the ‘Emilia Pérez’ Ticket and Celebrates ‘A Complete Unknown’
Image
With final Oscar balloting closed on February 18, we’re continuing with our eighth annual series of interviews with Academy voters from different branches for their unfiltered takes on what got picked, overlooked, and overvalued in the 2025 award season. Voter’s picks in bold. Interview edited for brevity.

Best Picture

I voted for “Emelia Pérez,” the most interesting, innovative, creative picture of the year. I went to a screening early on, so I didn’t have expectations, except that I liked [Jacques Audiard’s] other films. I love the music. I’m sad about all the stuff about Karla Sofía [Gascón]. Am I not going to look at a Picasso painting ever again? He was a shit. Am I not going to watch a Woody Allen film? It’s a slippery slope when you start with the personality of the people in the movie. Who’s perfect? It has to be about...

A Complete Unknown Movie Review: Timothée Chalamet Gives His All To This Biopic That Might Be Too Shallow For Its Own Good!
Image
A Complete Unknown Movie Review Rating:

Star Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Edward Norton, Monica Barbaro

Director: James Mangold

A Complete Unknown Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

What’s Good: The performances and the production design are all pretty amazing, and they really transport you to the 1960s.

What’s Bad: The film feels afraid of going deeper in any direction, and in the end, Bob Dylan, and the rest of the characters, remain as unknown figures.

Loo Break: The film is pretty tight when it comes to its pacing, and most scenes are important as they are based on events that truly happened.

Watch or Not?: If you are a fan of Bob Dylan or Timothée Chalamet, then this is a must-watch, but don’t expect too much out of this classic biopic.

Language: English (with subtitles).

Available On: Theaters, VOD

Academy Awards to Bring Back 1 Missed Aspect Taken Away From Past Few Years' Oscars
Image
When the 97th Academy Awards ceremony is held on March 2, viewers will notice that the way nominees are introduced in their respective categories will be like it used to be years ago. Per Variety, an assortment of film clips will be played as the nominees in acting categories are introduced, which has not been the case in recent years.

Back in 2021, when the pandemic was in full swing, the Oscars were broadcast with no host, and no film clips before each of the nominees. Instead, at the 2021 ceremony, the presenters gave a few “fun facts” and praise about each nominee in their category, per InsideHook. The ceremony also reduced the number of clips for acting nominees to free up time for more comedy or musical numbers and speeches.

When the ceremony is broadcast, viewers will be able to see clips from such films as A Complete Unknown, The Apprentice, and...

Edward Norton Received His First Academy Award Nomination for His Breakout Performance in This Gripping Legal Thriller
Image
Edward Nortonis currently up for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards for his performance as Pete Seeger in James Mangold’sfilm, A Complete Unknown. It’s far from his first rodeo, dating all the way back to the mid ‘90s, with his astounding, malicious, and vulnerable performance as a teen on a murder trial. Primal Fear stars Richard Gerealongside Norton and Laura Linney. It's a quintessential '90s legal thriller that was a genre that was booming at the time, thanks to the likes of successful John Grisham adaptations like The Firmand The Pelican Brief. Primal Fear, though, is even darker, and in large part thanks to Norton.

Oscars Best Adapted Screenplay breakdown: ‘Conclave’ is the heavy favorite after BAFTA, Critics Choice, USC Scripter wins
Image
Best Director gets more attention at the Oscars, but this millennium has shown the writing categories are potentially more important. In the past 15 years Argo (2012), Green Book (2018), and Coda (2021) won Best Picture without directing noms — but no film since Titanic (1997) has won without a writing nom. That could be good news for many of this year's nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay. Four of the five are also up for the top prize. Here is our breakdown of the race as it stands today.

SEEHow Kieran Culkin could end this 12-year Oscar streak Frontrunner: Conclave, by Peter Straughan

Only one film in this category earned writing nominations from the BAFTAs, Critics Choice Awards, USC Scripter Awards, and Golden Globes, and Conclave is it. The screenplay also managed to win all of those awards, including the Golden Globe, which was a shared category with original screenplay contenders. That means Conclave not only...

Oscars Best Supporting Actor breakdown: Why Kieran Culkin is coasting to victory
Image
Originally published Feb. 8, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. Pt; updated Feb. 23, 2025 at 9 p.m. Pt

The Oscars race for Best Supporting Actor has lacked the drama of other categories this year — so it's fitting that the clear favorite is nominated for his role in a comedy. A Real Pain star Kieran Culkin leads Gold Derby's odds to take home the statuette on March 2 — and it doesn't look like Yura Borisov (Anora), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), or Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice) can do anything about it. But who has the best shot at pulling off the upset? Let's break down the category.

Frontrunner: Kieran Culkin

In A Real Pain, Culkin plays Benji, an obnoxious yet charming drifter who accompanies his cousin, David (Jesse Eisenberg), on a tour through Poland to honor their late grandmother. Two years after his Emmy win for Succession, nearly every Oscar expert predicts...

SAG Awards: Kieran Culkin Pokes Fun at Adrien Brody During Best Supporting Actor Acceptance Speech
Image
Kieran Culkin won the award for best actor in a supporting role Sunday night at the 2025 SAG Awards.

Pamela Anderson presented Culkin with the statue, which he noted was an “incredibly heavy award” before poking fun at the length of Adrien Brody’s acceptance speeches. “I don’t think anyone could hold this for 45 seconds, which would be a lot of time, Adrien Brody,” he quipped. “There was no reason to take that shot. I love you, it’s a joke, you take your time.”

Culkin continued his comedic approach throughout his acceptance speech, joking that “Believe it or not, [winning] this actually means a lot to me” before giving thanks to Jesse Eisenberg and most importantly Eisenberg’s sister, Hallie, for entrusting him with the role of Benji Kaplan in A Real Pain.

“For those of you who don’t know, [Jesse] cast me in this movie without auditioning me or...

Folk, Pop and Agit-Prop: Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger After ‘A Complete Unknown’
Image
Based on Elijah Wald’s hour-by-hour countdown Dylan Goes Electric!, James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown is a quirky, engaging and (thankfully) never reverential biopic that tracks the journey of Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) from acoustic folk to rock amplification. Its main concern is music and mimesis: to showcase Chalamet performing the Dylan songbook with a fidelity to the original beyond the vocal range of the lip-synching Larry Parks in The Jolson Story (1946) or Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018).

The imitations are all, as it were, pitch perfect, but they tend to submerge the political dimension to Dylan’s decision to crank up the volume at the Newport Folk Festival on July 25, 1965. The gesture was not about electricity but autonomy, the desire of the artist to free himself from the restrictive meters and themes of an agit-prop folk tradition. Heard retrospectively, “It Ain’t Me Babe” is no longer just...

James Mangold, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is — and for 30 years has been — one of the most dependable filmmakers in Hollywood, always good for an entertaining and solid, if not showy, film, featuring great performances, regardless of genre.

Indeed, Mangold has directed dramas (Heavy and Girl, Interrupted), biopics (Walk the Line), westerns (3:10 to Yuma), crime/thrillers (Cop Land), action movies (Ford v Ferrari), rom-coms (Kate & Leopold), action/comedies (Knight and Day), mystery/horror films (Identity) and franchise films (The Wolverine, Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny). But because he does little to call attention to himself as the auteur of a film, he has, for much of his career, been overlooked, in terms of conversations about top filmmakers and awards.

That changed this awards season with his latest film, A Complete Unknown, which chronicles four years in the life of Bob Dylan,...

Succession‘s brothers, Kendall and Roman, are going up against each other in this year’s Best Supporting Actor category. Jeremy Strong is nominated for his role in The Apprentice while Kieran Culkin is nominated for A Real Pain. Their co-star and on-screen father Brian Cox has a clear favorite among the two actors.

Cox revealed that he loved Culkin’s performance in Jesse Eisenberg’s comedy-drama film. However, he shared that he will not be watching Strong’s performance in The Apprentice. It turns out that Cox hates to watch anything with Donald Trump or his story in it.

The ‘A Complete Unknown’ sound team recreated Bob Dylan’s 1965 Newport Folk Festival performance as if it were a real concert
Image
James Mangold likes to start his movies with a bang. “He wants to make sure that the people don’t get initially bored with the movie’s opening,” A Complete Unknown supervising sound editor Donald Sylvester tells Gold Derby. “He’s got a strong sense of a need to start like gangbusters.”

That’s why Mangold’s acclaimed and Oscar-nominated Bob Dylan movie doesn’t open with one of the singer’s famed songs. Instead, A Complete Unknown begins with Dylan’s arrival in New York in 1961, where a cacophony of music and street sound meets the young troubadour (and the audience).

“The overall goal of this movie was to create the most realistic environment possible,” sound mixer Tod Maitland, who recorded the music and sound on set, says. “I grew up in New York, recorded sound in New York for 45 years, and what was recreated for this movie is...

Timothée Chalamet on What Bob Dylan Taught Him About Fame and Politics: ‘Be Wary of Any Savior-Like Figures’
Image
Timothée Chalamet opened up about how playing Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown” influenced his own experience with fame and activism, saying that he learned from the folk legend to “be wary of any savior-like figures.”

During a packed press conference at Berlin Film Festival on Friday, Chalamet was asked about how Dylan — who penned several iconic protest songs — has influenced his view on political issues like war and the rise of the far-right. Though the moderator redirected the question to the film as “opposed to a personal political point of view,” Chalamet said: “I don’t think that’s necessarily a political question.”

He continued, “I think it’s in the nature of his music, the warnings against cult-like figures. And I think that Bob was very true to — I won’t speak for him because he’s alive and well in Malibu — but my interpretation is just be...

‘A Complete Unknown’ recreated an iconic Bob Dylan costume design fit for the film’s finale: ‘A great rock archetype that still echoes to this day’
Image
Receiving a single Oscar nomination would be an incredible personal achievement. But the four nominations A Complete Unknown costume designer Arianne Phillips has earned over her career extend “beyond my wildest 8-year-old dreams,” she tells Gold Derby in the final days of this year’s awards campaign.

Her bid this year for Best Costume Design is a full-circle moment. Phillips received her first nomination for James Mangold’s Walk the Line, a character-driven musical biography about Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. Now, she’s back in competition at the Oscars for the Bob Dylan film A Complete Unknown, another Magnold feature about a legendary musician. To further add to the symmetry, Johnny Cash is a supporting character.

“This nomination resonates in a way that is similar to probably my first nomination,” Phillips says. “Plus, it was a year of great costumed movies – very vivid costume movies, big costume movies.

Timothee Chalamet’s ‘A Complete Unknown’ Crosses $100 Million Globally
Image
“A Complete Unknown,” a musical biopic starring Timothée Chalamet as “Like a Rolling Stone” composer Bob Dylan, has cemented a box office milestone, notching $100 million in global ticket sales.

After seven weeks on the big screen, “A Complete Unknown” has grossed $70 million in North America and $30 million internationally for a grand total of $100 million. The R-rated film ranks as Searchlight’s sixth-highest grossing domestic release of all time and is expected to pass “Sideways” ($71.5 million) to crack the top five in the coming weeks.

James Mangold (“Walk the Line”) directed the movie, which reportedly cost between $60 million to $70 million to produce. Since movie theater owners get to keep roughly half of ticket sales, “A Complete Unknown” likely won’t turn a profit in its theatrical run. But still, it’s no small feat these days for specialty fare to crack the $100 million mark.

Searchlight opened “A Complete Unknown” on Christmas Day,...

‘A Complete Unknown’ Props Going on Display at Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie Centers (Exclusive)
Image
Props from “A Complete Unknown” will go on display at the Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie Centers in Tulsa, Okla., as part of a new exhibit, “Stepping Into the Unknown,” opening on Feb. 28. It’s the first exhibit to run concurrently at both centers.

The exhibit, presented in partnership with Searchlight Pictures, will “illuminate the deep bond between the two hugely influential American songwriters.” One of the first scenes in the Timothée Chalamet biopic sees Dylan visiting Guthrie (Scoot McNairy) in the hospital immediately upon his arrival in New York City.

Among the props from the James Mangold-directed film are Guthrie’s harmonica; Dylan’s letter to Guthrie; Johnny Cash’s letters to Dylan; “Blowin’ in the Wind” lyrics handwritten on a cocktail napkin; and a handful of fabricated album covers featuring the actors (like Chalamet and Elle Fanning’s rendition of “Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan”).

“As moviegoers learned from ‘A Complete Unknown,...

Kristen Bell and Adam Brody in Nadie quiere esto (2024)
A Complete Unknown Comes To Digital February 25, Blu-Ray April 1
Kristen Bell and Adam Brody in Nadie quiere esto (2024)
Perhaps the secret to modern-day success in the entertainment business is to name your project the opposite of what you want to happen to it. Example: the top-rated new series on Netflix in 2024 was called “Nobody Wants This.” There’s also this new indie movie distributed through Searchlight called “A Complete Unknown,” and despite that name, knowledge of its existence is rapidly becoming common. So is the Oscar buzz.

As luck would have it, he would not only land bigger and bigger gigs but form friendships along the way with other future music stars,...

Watch Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan in ‘A Complete Unknown’ Meet His Hero — Exclusive Clip
Image
The filmmakers behind Best Picture nominee “A Complete Unknown” will be the first ones to tell you that any portrayal of musician Bob Dylan comes with an extreme level of difficulty, so the stakes were high filming the opening sequence, which IndieWire can share in an exclusive clip above.

“‘Song to Woody’ is meant to be Bob’s tribute — it’s both an audition and a heartfelt expression of gratitude to his hero,” said star Timothée Chalamet of the scene where his Dylan goes into Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital to meet and perform the song for his idol Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy) and Pete Seeger (Edward Norton.)

Chalamet’s portrayal of Dylan, an icon of multiple genres and disciplines, has earned him his second Oscar nomination for Best Actor, as well as his own tribute at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where past collaborators provided their endorsement of the...

‘A Complete Unknown’ Costume Designer Arianne Phillips Created 8,000-Plus Looks for the Freewheelin’ Style of Bob Dylan
Image
Having partnered with such A-list musicians as Madonna for decades, costume designer and self-described visual artist Arianne Phillips is no stranger to the music world. Her latest work on James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, marks Phillips’ fourth Academy Award nomination for best costume design and her sixth collab with Mangold. The two first teamed up for Girl, Interrupted in 1999, while their work on Walk the Line, which focused on Johnny Cash’s life and career, in 2005 is revisited through the Cash-Dylan friendship depicted in A Complete Unknown. For the film, which landed eight Oscar nominations, Phillips and her bicoastal team of 42 created approximately 8,000 costumes, including 67 wardrobe changes for Timothée Chalamet in the starring role.

“So much happens in the first four years of Bob’s career that it was really thrilling, as a costume designer, to guide the audience through his dramatic style evolution,” Phillips tells The Hollywood Reporter.

‘The Brutalist’ Director Brady Corbet Celebrates This Year’s Oscar Nominees as “Very Radical, Daring, Original Movies”
Image
This year’s five best director Oscar nominees — Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown) — sat down for a conversation at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Monday to discuss their group of films, both separately and together.

In a chat moderated by The Hollywood Reporter‘s Scott Feinberg at the Arlington Theatre, Audiard kicked things off with a short discussion of Emilia Pérez, as he noted the film had a smaller budget than most American musicals and dubbed it, “a modest musical. It was my first time doing a musical, but it was also my first time working entirely in a studio, and that for me was both a shock and a tremendous discovery. I absolutely loved doing it because working in the studio allowed me to attain a level of stylization that I...

How ‘A Complete Unknown’ Tells Bob Dylan’s Story Through Sound
Image
When director James Mangold assembled his sound department for “A Complete Unknown,” it was largely made up of artists with whom he had worked before — re-recording mixers David Giammarco and Paul Massey, supervising sound editor Donald Sylvester, supervising music editor Ted Caplan — but production sound mixer Tod Maitland was new to the team. And while Maitland has plenty of complex musicals on his resume, including “The Greatest Showman” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” he quickly realized that “A Complete Unknown” was going to be his most challenging music-oriented film yet.

Initially, Maitland and Mangold discussed the possibility of shooting the musical performances in “A Complete Unknown” in the traditional manner, to playback with the actors lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks. “There was the idea that we might use playback for some scenes, depending on how Timmy [Chalamet] was doing,” Maitland told IndieWire. “We didn’t want to waste time with earwigs and timing mechanisms.

Blurred: Maria Pedraza, Guy Pearce, Alex Pettyfer, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje star in erotic thriller
Image
Filming wrapped on an erotic thriller called Blurred way back in the summer of 2024, but we’re just now hearing about it. While the movie has been moving under the radar up to this point, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that the film’s cast includes Maria Pedraza (Netflix’s Money Heist), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Suicide Squad), Alex Pettyfer (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare), and Guy Pearce, who has received an Oscar nomination for his role in The Brutalist.

The names of the cast members and the fact that the film has been written and directed by Ben Cookson (Waiting for Anya) is almost everything we know about Blurred at the moment, as the plot and character details are being kept tightly under wraps. The Hollywood Reporter was able to learn that the story is set in New York’s fashion world. Cloud9 Studios, which is handling the international...

Edward Norton movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Few young actors have had quite as surprising a film debut as Edward Norton in the 1996 thriller Primal Fear. As Aaron Stampler, a 19 year-old Kentucky altar boy seemingly being framed for murder, this little-known actor was taken to the audience’s heart with his heartfelt pleas of his innocence. It was not until the film’s final shocking moments that they learned the truth about Aaron and recognized the enormous acting chops of Norton. Critics and the Academy responded as well, with Norton earning his first Oscar nomination for his performance.

From there, his career blossomed, demonstrating his impressive skills in a range of genres, from mysteries to rom-coms and even a Woody Allen musical. But dramas regularly produced his most impressive work, as in 1998 when he earned his second Oscar nomination as a white supremacist leader who comes to see the error of his ways in American History X....

Although Edward Norton never did get to mingle with the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after only a single outing as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, his career certainly hasn’t slowed down one bit. Last week, he received his fourth Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Pete Seeger in the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. He may be up against some heavy hitters like Kieren Culkin in A Real Pain and Guy Pierce in The Brutalist, but if there was ever a more appropriate time for him to finally earn an Oscar win, it'd be now. In the film, Norton completely vanishes into his performance of Seeger, providing his own singing voice and perfectly capturing the...
