Eddington's Mysterious (And Potentially Controversial) Villains Explained
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Eddington."

Although he's only four films deep into his career, filmmaker Ari Aster has already gained a notorious reputation for the way his work includes a heaping helping of ambiguity. From the mysteries surrounding the Graham family's past in "Hereditary" to the question of what (if anything) is real in "Beau Is Afraid," Aster's movies leave a lot of aspects unexplained by their conclusion. His latest film, "Eddington," is no different in this department. Even though it's set in a more recognizably grounded world than his prior films, it's not for lack of any paranoia-inducing (or paranoia-induced) elements. Aster's earlier films follow a protagonist as they are inexorably drawn into an increasingly hostile and surreal world, and the biggest difference with "Eddington" is that this surreal world just happens to closely resemble our reality from the year 2020 and beyond.

Despite deliberately playing with this political and sociological fire,...

You Can Stream Christian Bales Western Hostiles for Free on Tubi
Image
If you are looking for hidden gems, big Hollywood hits, or B-movie madness, Tubi has certainly become the platform with the most ad-supported free content you can possibly find anywhere on streaming. This is particularly true for fans of Westerns, with the platform offering more content than all the paid-for streaming services combined (though the quality can vary pretty drastically). Still, when a stand-out of the Western genre gets added to Tubi, it is always worth sharing.

2017's Hostiles not only has Christian Bale at his best, but it has an all-around phenomenal cast and direction to fully immerse oneself in the beauty contrasted with the conflicts in Montana in the late 1800s. This is just scratching the surface of what makes Hostiles a must-watch for Western fans and we will look a bit deeper at what makes it such a welcome addition to the Tubi catalog.

Hostiles Plot and...

The revered performer has been a constant presence in Hollywood for decades, showcasing his phenomenal range and skills in front of the camera in acclaimed films like American Psycho, The Machinist, The Dark Knight trilogy, and American Hustle (among countless other hits).

In 2017, Bale ventured into the Western world and starred in the gripping drama Hostiles. He delivered a commanding and complex performance as a war-weary veteran who embarks upon a...

After Reginald rallies a troop of unsuspecting heroes, including a grave-digging ex-slave and a street-smart woman-for-hire,...

The Thicket trailer: Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis star in Western thriller
Image
The Western thriller The Thicket may be a Tubi Original, but this is one that’s going to be getting some theatrical play before it heads over to the Tubi streaming service. The theatrical release date is September 6th, and with that date right around the corner, a trailer for The Thicket has arrived online. Check it out in the embed above!

Described as “an edge-of-your-seat thriller that reimagines the western genre and immerses the audience into the harsh and unforgiving world of the West,” The Thicket was directed by Elliott Lester – whose previous credits include the drama Love Is the Drug, the Jason Statham crime film Blitz, the David Oyelowo one-man-show Nightingale, the thriller Sleepwalker, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger thriller Aftermath – from a screenplay by Chris Kelley, that was based on a novel by Bubba Ho-Tep author Joe R. Lansdale.

Peter Dinklage, Juliette Lewis Clash as Cold-Blooded Killers in ‘The Thicket’ Dark Western Trailer
Image
Juliette Lewis and Peter Dinklage are unlikely outlaws, and cruel and bloody killers to boot, in the trailer for Tubi’s dark Western The Thicket, which dropped on Tuesday.

“You’re the littlest man I’ve ever seen,” Lewis, who plays violent gang leader Cutthroat Bill, tells Dinklage’s character, crafty bounty hunter Reginald Jones, a grave-digging alcoholic son of an ex-slave and a street-smart prostitute, at one point in the trailer.

“You’re the ugliest,” Reginald, no less a violent killer than Bill, shoots back. Director Elliott Lester’s film has Reginald on a collision course with Bill after her gang kidnaps the sister of Jack, an innocent young man played by Levon Hawke, the son of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke.

The Thicket

Reginald and Jack track the sister into a violent no man’s land known as The Big Thicket on a mission to rescue her from Bill.

‘The Thicket’ Trailer: Peter Dinklage Tracks Assassin Juliette Lewis in Wild West
Image
Juliette Lewis and Peter Dinklage hope to continue their respective career highs with the upcoming Western novel adaptation “The Thicket.”

Lewis, who reigned over 2022 TV with “Yellowjackets,” “Queer as Folk,” and “Welcome to Chippendales,” plays an assassin who is tracked by a bounty hunter, portrayed by Dinklage. The actor is next set to star in the buzzy musical film “Wicked” after a slew of recent film roles including “She Came to Me,” “Cyrano,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” and Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut “Unfrosted.”

The official synopsis for “The Thicket” reads: When fierce bounty hunter Reginald Jones (Dinklage) is recruited by a desperate man to track down a ruthless killer known only as Cutthroat Bill (Lewis), he rallies a band of unlikely heroes including a grave-digging ex-slave and a street-smart woman-for-hire. Christian Bale Gives a Mindblowing Portrayal of Ptsd in This Western
Image
Christian Bale displays unwavering commitment to portraying Ptsd in Hostiles, showcasing the toll of war. Bale's haunting performance in Hostiles ranks among his finest, despite being overlooked upon release. Despite underperformance at the box office, Hostiles offers a compelling narrative driven by Bale's nuanced portrayal.

One of the finest actors of a generation, Christian Bale disappears into fictional roles with unbridled commitment. Whether losing record-breaking weight to play haunted characters in The Machinist and The Fighter or beefing up to portray Batman, few actors have shown dedication to their craft in the way Bale has since his career began in the mid-1980s. In 2017, Bale gave one of his most outstanding performances in a contemplative Western that sadly failed to resonate among the masses.

Written and directed by Scott Cooper, Hostiles tells the story of Joseph Blocker, a troubled U.S. Army Captain who has no choice but to escort Cheyenne...

‘On Sacred Ground’ Review: Doc Duo Deliver Uneven Drama About the Dakota Access Pipeline Contoversy
Image
Although there is much to admire in “On Sacred Ground,” the first dramatic feature by environmental activist documentarians Josh and Rebecca Tickell, this technically polished indie effort is overall more admirable in its intent than compelling in its narrative. And there’s really no way of getting around the fact that many viewers will be put off by the abundance of “white savior melodrama” in a movie putatively focused on 2016 protests by Native Americans and their allies against construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

To be sure, it can be argued that telling the story through a non-Indigenous protagonist’s point of view is an efficient way to expose a wider audience to pressing social issues about land use, water rights and cultural imperialism as the lead character gets his eyes opened and his conscience stoked and blah, blah, blah. Trouble is, the movie places so much emphasis in so many scenes on the professional,...

On Sacred Ground Tells The Story Of The Dakota Access Pipeline [Exclusive Clip]
Image
Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive clip from the upcoming environmental drama On Sacred Ground. This movie is the first narrative depiction of the events of the 2016 Dakota Access Pipeline protests and construction in a feature film. On Sacred Ground is based on true events and follows Daniel, a journalist and military veteran, who gets a lot more than he bargained for when he takes on this assignment. Daniel finds himself torn between oil company executive Elliot and the Native Americans whose land is being stolen and destroyed to create the pipeline.

While many believe they know the story of the Dakota Access Pipeline construction and protests because of the news coverage in 2016, On Sacred Ground will show the true horrors that surrounded this intense protest. The movie depicts one of the most heated protests in Native American history as they fight against both the government and a major oil company.

Trailer for 'On Sacred Ground' Film About the Dakota Access Pipeline
Image
"Are you here to redeem yourself or make money for somebody else?" Shout Factory + Big Picture Ranch have revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled On Sacred Ground, a narrative "fictional" feature made by acclaimed environmentalist doc filmmakers Josh Tickell & Rebecca Tickell. Based on true events during the 2016 construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline that runs right through the Standing Rock Reservation, the environmental drama opens in limited theaters and on VOD in January. A journalist and oil company executive find themselves on opposite sides of the fight during the building of the contentious Dakota Access Pipeline that runs through a Native Reservation in North Dakota. This is a different kind of propaganda film, about how doing the right thing to defend people and their land can really upset corporate overlords. The film stars David Arquette, William Mapother, Amy Smart, Kerry Knuppe, Frances Fisher, Irene Bedard, Mariel Hemingway,...

‘Prey’ Breakout Amber Midthunder Is Ready to Be Our Next Great Action Star
Image
Even without the family Christmas presents of throwing axes, Amber Midthunder was born to be an action star. Her father, David Midthunder, is an actor and stunt performer whose recent credits include “1883” and “Dark Winds”; mom Angelique Midthunder is the casting director of “Reservation Dogs.” The youngest Midthunder started working on screen when she was four (her first role: “Little Girl”) and, more recently, she’s had lead roles on TV series “Roswell, New Mexico” and “Legion” and parts in films “The Marksman” and “The Ice Road.”

But in Dan Trachtenberg’s clever “Predator” prequel “Prey,” the 25-year-old Midthunder is the lead. The fifth film in the venerable action franchise is set on the Great Plains in the fall of 1719 and follows Midthunder’s Naru as she battles a vicious alien warrior intent on taking her out, as well as her Comanche Nation tribe, a coterie of French fur trappers,...

‘Prey’ Review: A Clever ‘Predator’ Prequel Proves Even Old IP Can Draw Fresh Blood
Image
Fans looking for connections between “Prey” and the four “Predator” films that preceded it (not counting a pair of crossover titles from the early aughts) will find plenty to enjoy in Dan Trachtenberg’s prequel. There’s the overt stuff (keep your eyes peeled for a gun that pops up many decades later in the series’ timeline) and the tropes, but .

Turns out, even the most wrung-out IP — we’re talking about a series that was eventually forced to crossover with another action-centric alien film, to deeply stupid results — can still tap into truly smart new ideas.

Set on the Great Plains in the fall of 1719, “Prey” picks up at a fraught time in American history. The Comanche Nation may still rule this slice of prairie, plains, and forest, but just miles away is a group of money-hungry French fur trappers pillaging their way through the country’s wildlife. Within the tribe,...

Jonah Hill, Angelina Jolie, Alexandre Aja, Dan Trachtenberg & More Set Next Directorial Projects
Image
Jonah Hill is stepping behind the camera again with another topic close to his heart. After his 2018 directorial debut Mid90s, which was an autobiographical look at a young boy’s coming of age amongst a group of skaters, Hill will be directing a documentary for Netflix about therapy, using his own therapist as the focus. Dr. Phil Stutz will be at the center of Hill’s documentary, which he says on Instagram will “frame therapy and Phil’s tools for dealing with life in a way that isn’t corny or cheesy.” In an exciting addition, it is reported that the film will also feature an interactive component that will be able to assist people who are unable to obtain therapy to get the tools and information they need Joaquin Phoenix, who co-starred with Hill in the Gus Van Sant film Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, will...

Wes Studi, Q’orianka Kilcher and Tatanka Means will star in “Canyon Del Muerto,” the new film from writer and director Coerte Voorhees.

Hostiles Trailer Takes Christian Bale Through the Brave Frontier
Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, and Wes Studi in Hostiles (2017)
Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures has released the first trailer for Hostiles, which reunites director Scott Cooper and Christian Bale after their 2013 drama Out of the Furnace. The movie is slated to hit theaters in late December, which could make this an early favorite for the 2018 Oscars, although we still have quite some time before the awards season picture starts fully coming together. Still, this drama has been tearing through the prestige festival circuit, debuting at Telluride in September before appearing at the Toronto International Film Festival, Rome Film Fest and more, as it gets ready to debut at AFI Fest in Los Angeles next week.

Longmire Season Three Blu-Ray Review
Longmire is an absolute anomaly in the world of television, which could have something to do with the fact that it was pulled from A&E, despite consistently high ratings for the network. It’s also the reason that it was something of a no-brainer that it would be picked up by someone else, and season four will air on Netflix later in the year.

Where the first two seasons pulled us slowly into the depths of Sheriff Walt Longmire’s life on the sprawling plains of Wyoming, the third season is like the hammer blow that follows the slow, methodical wind-up.

The second season ended by bringing a lot of forces to the fore in a move of plot construction that brilliantly weaves angles and conspiracies into a show that actually makes it difficult to look away. The third season spins this all together, but uses a mode of...
