Ein Date mit Miss Fortune

I've only watched this movie last night on a rental cd.

From the cd cover itself, I expected this to be somethin' like a romance scene in Venice Canal - ah, you know what i mean. And I was wrong! ( I like to be wrong on my movie expectations. Je-je-je! ).

This is a unique rom-com. ... funny, romantic, sentimental, dramatic with a hint of reality.

One thing that amazes me ... I never thought Portuguese are this conservative and superstitious.

I really am not familiar with the actors/actresses in this movie. But they played their parts very well. From the main characters, to the girl's family, the the guy's side kick and even the fortune teller - I'd really say their acting is awesome!

Watch this people. You'll thank me when you do.

Seriously. I don't think I've ever seen less believable acting that Ryan Scott's. Within 10 minutes I'm annoyed with every line he utters. It's wooden and stiff... It's just bad acting!

Jeannette Sousa isn't all that bad, but also not really convincing.

I bet the story line is somewhat fun, but I just can't stomach it. Do not recommend.

My wife and I loved this movie! The Characters were very realistic and the family is very much like a Portuguese family that I know. The script was witty and the acting by Ryan Scott and Jeannette Sousa was excellent! The dog in the movie was very funny! Joaquim De Almeida was very believable as the father. I have seen him in many movies and this role was very different for him. We thought it was funnier than My Big Fat Greek Wedding! I have heard that this was a low budget film but I did not feel that it was low budget. The rain seen was very realistic and the break up seen was very sad. Vic Sahay was very funny as well! We found that we enjoyed it so much with all the characters that it would make a good sitcom.

Struggling TV writer Jack is alone in a diner when he's surprised by his ex and her new boyfriend. He is rescued by Maria who pretends to be his date. They have a cute first date that night as flashforward clips show their clashing lifestyles living together in the future. He struggles to fit in her superstitions and her large Portuguese family.

This is My Big Fat Greek Wedding without the comedy writing or experienced comedic actors or good chemistry. The lead couple has pretty on their side but they don't have great comedic skills. They aren't the best and the filmmaking is amateur hour. The family does have the great Joaquim de Almeida playing the patriarch. The culture clash with the old country style family is the best part of the writing but it's not enough to fill out the movie. This has good ambitions but inferior execution.

This was an enjoyable, cute and funny movie. Not the greatest, but fun enough. I'm sure that some will compare this to My Big Fat Greek Wedding and some comparisons are apt.

Maria is beautiful, and charming and extremely quirky. And she snores. Jack is one of those earthy guys who doesn't let anything go by without making a joke. Maria's family is very traditional. Her father would be tough on any man.

This movie is about the two falling in love, and about trying to make it work in a family where everything is stacked against Jack from the start. The two have so many differences that you would think they would be better off with someone else.

There are funny moments, and sweet moments.
