Don't bother

If you were hoping that this might finally be the movie that breaks the mould of poorly made a Canadian movies, it's not. It's just another overly artsy, poorly acted, poorly written example of movies made in Toronto for the tiny community of film makers who just don't get it. The rest of Canada doesn't want this kind of self indulgent drivel. Just another excuse to pay lousy film makers for substandard work. When will we get something that's truly entertaining?

Stone elevates

Sam (Julia Sarah Stone) is an awkward 14 year old struggling with her new sexuality. The other girls led by Molly tease her relentlessly. There is growing sexual tension between her and her lifeguard teacher Lukas. She cleans at a retirement home run by her mother and befriends elderly resident Judith. Ed (Kenneth Welsh) is an angry resident.

Julia Sarah Stone has intriguing presence. The movie has inevitable tension. The issue seems to be the meandering flow. Maybe she needs more earlier scenes with Ed. Most of all, this is a good showcase of a possible future acting star. She has a face that simply pulls in the audience. She takes this light take on the dramatic coming-of-age story and elevates it one step above.

Nice docu-drama

Its about a teen (Sam), plain and lacking self-confidence. While trying to form a friendship with a boy, she (played by Julia Sarah Stone) is drafted by her mother to work as a cleaner at a seniors care home.

It is a grim antiseptic facility that looks like a hospital. Here, our heroine meets two residents. One is semi-comatose. The other is loudly belligerent.

There's really no plot. However, it works as a nice docu-drama. Focusing on Sam as she goes about her life. Many incidents, but no climatic scenes.

Definitely worth 6/10, Patience required. Good performances by Julia Stone, Diana Leblanc and Kenneth Walsh.
