... at least my reading of it. It's not that the destinies of these two women intertwine, it's that their pasts intertwined and this is their first opportunity to reconcile that.
The younger woman's husband has killed himself, requested to be buried on an isolated graveyard located on an island and by the older woman who is a priest who is not exactly on good terms with the church. This commences a complicated relationship between the two as they share details about their past which are also of interest to the other.
So, the movie is about trauma and regret and how that becomes a part of you and your identity.
The movie starts off kind of badly. The two women are way too confrontational. They want something from each other, but there is an unnecessary barrier between them. Sure, there needs to be some kind of a barrier, because there needs to be a story, but where we start from is just too much and if I hadn't been in a theater, I'm not sure if I would have paid much attention after that.
That being said, the journey, once we get going, is interesting. There are elements which feel unnecessary and sometimes kind of forced (having been a member of the Lutheran church of Finland for much of my life - though not anymore - I found it weird that there were two scenes of confessionals, which are not a thing here), but overall the way the relationship between the two women evolves is satisfying.
On top of that, there are some very interesting visuals, both natural and in dreams.
Overall, I liked it very much, even though you might have to work to get through the beginning of the movie. It is worth it.
