As someone who watched the original suits multiple times, this series definitely struggles out the gates. It rushes to try to hit the highs of the third or fourth season without waiting for the development necessary, often addressing high drama and tension storylines to quickly to earn the payoff.
That being said, episode 10 really started to turn things around for me. No legacy characters, no gimmicks, just a tension and history driven storyline that called back to the way the first or second season of the original series felt. It was in this episode I finally felt like Suits L. A. finally gave us a reason to put eyes on it.
The Harvey gimmick from the previous episode and the semi-full explanation on the Eddie mystery felt deflating but following it up with such a strong episode shows that the show truly does have a voice, its just taking a minute to find and if we let it fail before the first season ends, we may never be able to truly see it sing. Just remember that people were skeptical of the first season of suits too. Finding your groove takes time, and some engaging entertainment, regardless of depth, in the meantime is something better than many shows nowadays can boast.
That being said, capitalizing on more legacy characters if it can be worked organically is never a bad thing. Cameo appearances from Louis, Jessica, Mike, or even Samantha, Donna, Benjamin, or Alex wouldn't be unwelcome.
