Everything is perfect about this film. From the directing, cinematography, acting, set design to the music this movie is a work of art and no film exists of this kind. Trust me, you will leave the theater wanting to go see it a second time like I did as it leaves you wanting to go back for more. For first time director Hunter Lee Hughes this is a huge milestone for him. Can't wait to see what his next film project will be. His style is so rich in history with a modern touch of today's society. The score this movie is beautifully composed. I want a copy of the soundtrack NOW. It fits the mood of the movie so well. From the piano to the cello it sways back and forth with emotions ranging from happy to moments of fear based around the characters current feelings in a scene. Go see this movie!! Once you see it, you will go back for a second, third, fourth time, etc.!!
This exceptional film had a tremendous impact on me. Not only is this film a cathartic experience to anyone who has suffered childhood abuse but the take-away is that forgiveness must be the last piece of healing. Powerful performances make this a film you cannot take your eyes off of. The poetry is thoroughly entertaining and thought provoking. The film keeps you thinking long past leaving the theater. Velasquez brings a humanity to her character that invokes equal parts rage and empathy from the viewer. Impressive film from Hughes. I look forward to his next project.
I watched "Guys Reading Poems" last week during its first screening in LA. I was moved by how beautifully poetry and action were combined, resulting in such an honest and careful blending. It is an exceptional film that combines the romanticism of a past era with the issues that a modern human being has to face while growing up and as an adult. The performances were very honest and deep. For me, the best moment in the film was when the director, Hunter Lee Hughes, was reciting his own poem. We were wondering who wrote this modern masterpiece and found out it was him after the screening ended! From the audience's reaction, I realized I wasn't the only one who related to the story and its symbolic parallel universe. That's what a true piece of art does; it speaks to people's hearts through multiple paths. "Guys Reading Poems" is one of the best samples that the American film industry has to display. Watch it to get inspired and help it travel around the world so that more people can enjoy it!
I found this film because I was exploring Alexander Dreymon's work. I had watched the trailer and read up on the film. While that was helpful, it did not give away much at all. At first, I was worried I was not going to be able to follow. I was listening so intently to the poem because it was unfamiliar, and trying to relate it to the action. I didn't know if I was going to be "smart" enough to follow. For me, the beginning of a film is just like a book. It takes a minute to get yourself into the action. You are being brought up to speed in a sense. You are getting to know the characters and their lives. As I kept watching, it all pulled me in just as movies we like do. The creative way the film was made is more than my vocabulary and knowledge can describe. I just know I was mesmerized by the way it was done. It was, for lack of a better word, so artsy. I mean, I was intrigued right away because I am a sucker for black and white films. The ability to tell a story without dialogue shows how well the crew and cast are able to do their craft. And finally, the story that the film is telling is heartbreaking and so needed for us to keep moving to understanding how important it is that mental health is part of our health care system. We have all experienced or know some who has experienced a downfall with mental health. It is hard to watch the victim in this film being abused. We tend to focus our empathy and our sorrow to the victim. The film lead me to feel for all of the characters. They show us that we all deal with the path of destruction mental illness can bring, differently. I am hopeful that more films like this one can be thought of as mainstream. I think our society would be more educated if we could embrace all types of art in film making. I think because films like this are not well- known, we feel it is "different, bizarre, or somehow not good enough. When just the opposite is true. Why are we so scared of different??? Different is what moves us forward.
This film is one of the best indie films I've seen in a very long time. The way Hunter connects art, poetry, film noir, music, and raw emotion brought me through laughter and tears. The experience was mind bending and I recommend this film to anyone. The actors were phenomenal-each and every one of them-such a special beautiful experience.
