Tame Impala Announce New Album Deadbeat
Image
Tame Impala have announced Deadbeat, their fifth album, out on October 17th via Columbia Records. Update: Parker has mapped out a supporting US tour taking place in October and November.

Serving as Kevin Parker’s first Tame Impala album since 2020’s The Slow Rush, Deadbeat sees Parker taking inspiration from the Western Australia rave scene and ‘bush doof culture,’ which refers to an Australian subculture centered around outdoor dance parties with electronic music in remote natural settings. Along with embracing a more electronic palette, the album also digs into Parker’s frustrations with himself, likening self-sabotage to a negative feedback loop and examining the minutiae of his bad habits. Star Trek: Voyager Followed A Gene Roddenberry Rule That Left Little Room For Error
Image
In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Tuvix", a transporter accident fused the stern, logical Vulcan Tuvok (Tim Russ) with the jolly hobbit-like chef Neelix (Ethan Phillips) into a single being. This new being, who says he's named Tuvix (Tom Wright) possesses memories and personality traits from both Tuvok and Neelix, which is a matter of great consternation from Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the crew of the Voyager. Tuvix soon finds that he likes his new amalgam personality, finding happiness and agency as an individual.

Soon, however, the Voyager engineers find a way to reverse the effects of the transporter accident and separate Tuvix back into his two constituent beings. Tuvix objects, of course. To do so would mean to murder him. Surely a newly created person has rights just as much as any other member of the crew, and Tuvix would like them to be protected. Notoriously among Trekkies,...

Locarno Review: David Krumholtz Rounds Off a Big Year in Deadbeat Comedy Lousy Carter
David Krumholtz
What a year it’s been for David Krumholtz. In 2023, the actor has added a Tony-winning play (Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt) and a box-office sensation (you know which one) to his resumé. In both cases that affable face, so often in the margins, nudged toward center stage. Krumholtz goes one further with deadbeat comedy Lousy Carter, a premiere last week in competition at the Locarno Film Festival wherein the actor plays a graduate lecturer who learns he has six months to live and decides to try seducing a student. It’s less creepy than it sounds and, at its best, it’s all his.

Lousy Carter is directed by Bob Byington, returning to the Swiss festival for the first time since 2012, when his Nick Offerman starring Somebody Up There Likes Me took home the Special Jury Prize. Byington’s script plants the nominatively determined character in a community college in Austin,...

Little Demon: Does the Series Live Up to the Talent Behind It?
Image
On paper, Little Demon assembled a team of all-stars both in front of and behind the camera. With the main draw coming via the addition of The Goat in Danny DeVito voicing Satan himself, he was accompanied by his daughter Lucy DeVito (Deadbeat), and Hollywood's resting b***h face in the excellent Aubrey Plaza.

Danny DeVito himself has made a successful career out of also being a voice actor. With such an iconic New Jersey disgruntled and gruff delivery coupled with DeVito's natural acting talent, the performer fit right in on guest spots in The Simpsons as Homer's estranged brother Herb.

So successful, in fact, that the voice acting side quest would have him voice his own caricature in Disney's Hercules in 1997, only continuing to this day with the actor having boasted voice gigs with some of the top animation companies at each of their respective high points.

Dummy Trailer Has Anna Kendrick Making an Unlikley New Friend on Quibi
Anna Kendrick and Meredith Hagner in Dummy (2020)
Quibi has released a new trailer for its upcoming comedy Dummy. This is just one of many, many high-profile shows that the upstart streaming service has coming down the pipeline. The gimmick, for those that aren't familiar, is that Quibi produces short-form content designed to be viewed on a mobile device. In this case, they've enlisted Pitch Perfect favorite Anna Kendrick to star in a comedy from creator Cody Heller of Deadbeat fame. Specifically, Kendrick is paling around with a life-sized sex doll.

The trailer opens up with Anna Kendrick making out with her older boyfriend. During which time, she discovers something strange on his bed. This leads to the reveal that he has a life-like sex doll. Things get especially strange when the doll begins talking to her through the use of some unsettling CGI. Oh, and the doll is a proud feminist. They then head out on an...

Adrian Peng Correia (‘Glow’ cinematographer) on visually expressing the conflict between the ‘show lives’ and ‘real lives’ of female wrestlers [Exclusive Video Interview]
Adrian Peng Correia
Adrian Peng Correia admits that taking over as cinematographer for the second season of “Glow” was “an interesting conflict.” On the one hand, you have to “honor something that has already been done for the first season.” On the other hand, you have to “express yourself with camera in a different way.” Correia spoke about his work at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts Btl panel, hosted by managing editor Chris Beachum. The event took place on Thursday, May 30, at the Landmark Theater in Los Angeles. Watch our exclusive video interview with Correia above.

Deadbeat At Dawn – The Blu Review
Review by Roger Carpenter

Back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I was (over)active on the bootleg video circuit. One of the directors I discovered in my dealings with other collectors was Jim Van Bebber. His Deadbeat at Dawn was a legend almost immediately after it was released, and his reputation was solidified by a handful of short films which traumatized heretofore steel-bellied horror movie viewers. Even in slightly blurry, multi-generational bootleg copies, his films carried a wallop not felt very often. They were energetic, raw, no-holds-barred and outrageously gory. They had to be seen to be believed.

Fast-forward to the present and Van Bebber is one of a handful of Diy film mavericks, along with Bill Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Sam Raimi, Buddy Giovinazzo and their ilk, now revered for their hardcore 80’s output. But of this group, perhaps Van Bebber stands just a little taller for his extreme persistence.

Wile E. Coyote Movie in the Works at Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. is developing “Coyote Vs. Acme” as a Wile E. Coyote animated movie with “Lego Batman” director Chris McKay on board to produce.

The sibling team of Jon and Josh Silberman, whose writing and producing credits include “Living Biblically,” “Bordertown,” “Deadbeat,” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” have been hired by the studio to write the “Coyote Vs. Acme” script.

Wile E. Coyote is part of Warner’s Looney Tunes characters, which include Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, and Marvin the Martian. The dialogue-free Coyote character first appeared in 1949 in “Fast and Furry-ous,” the first of 49 cartoons in which he was never able to catch the Road Runner, despite using complex devices from the fictitious Acme Corporation. The Acme contraptions invariably fail, leaving the Coyote squashed flat or burnt to a crisp.

McKay made his feature film directorial debut with 2017’s “Lego Batman,...
