It's a simple story, but strong plot wrapped in such intriguing, nerve-wrecking way. Watched it twice in theatre, because I just LOVE everything about the film. I could feel I gasped, was shocked, surprised, and amazed by what we saw on the big screen. Once the film fin, I was like I couldn't even feel our own feet. And the vibe....stayed with me even now.
Acting wise, nobody disappoints. Everyone understood the assignment, did it totally good! That car scene (we have seen a bit in the trailer), is truly gripping in the film! In fact, it succeed to make me stunned. The chemistry between Kajol and Kherin Sharma as her daughter was *chef's kiss*. 'That' particular scene in Kali Shakti song, we didn't see it coming, but...OMG. GOAT!!!
The climax, I dont have words to say about this, but FIRE. The lesson about mother's love, mother's protection, prayers, and the biggest highest power in the universe, never fails me.

The story is interesting- finally a proper horror with a decent budget to match the vfx.
Mythology meets current world , faith vs practicality..... but all in all a decent ride.
Kajol is top class - Hollywood keeps complaining they don't have a tom cruise replacement - we don't have a Kajol !!!!
30 years she's carried the mantle of being the best actress and only one who can change the way you look at screen.
And she doesn't let you down in the movie either - looks like a million bucks and acting well no one can touch her even now when there's an emotional scene involved.
See it with a practical mind set of letting mythology work and let it rule.
May the faith be with you.

There is not much I wanna say, My Rating is 6.5/10... This movie is not something very Extraordinary but a Good Movie I Can say. One of the best things was its background score which will make you feel the gravity of the scenes. Also, Camera Work is great. This Movie could be better if it wasn't lazy... Laziness is the biggest flaw of this movie in my opinion... CGI was like, acceptable for me but AI videos.... I was seriously Irritated because of those Ai scenes, There is a full sequence which was made by AI and it disappoints... and Another Flaw is Set Pieces, which looked very, very artificial... Now Talking about Horror, this movie had jump scares, and many spooky moments... TBH, I wasn't really much affected by jump scares or any other cinephile will not be much affected, but still I can't complain much about it because I saw the effort they made on the Horror element! Now, What's the best Thing I saw in this movie was using mythology to set up its plot which was not much greater but also not bad... it was good, I liked It... Overall, this is a good watch but not something extraordinary, obviously better than most of the SO CALLED HORROR MOVIES OF BOLLYWOOD.
Pretty good movie with decent storyline but I don't know why Kajol's acting was way off , and obviously the plot is repeated the same logic to save the family u go out to somewhere else than one of your frnds call you back then something happens so your whole family have to come now at the end u face the enemy to be the ultimate galactic saviour ( obviously you will need god's power) you defeat the enemy and you be the hero I would rather recommend to watch SHAITAAN it's better than this m still giving this 5 starts coz other characters balanced the missing points but you can still feel the stretch again i dont have any hatred and this review isn't targetted to anyone this is my personal opinion.
Folk Horror is a sub-genre of Horror which has recently re-emerged from obscurity across the globe with movies like the Witch, the Apostle, Midsommar, similarly in India movies like Tumbbad, Bulbbul, Chhorii, Shaitaan etc. These are not necessarily fast paced, jump scare laden horror movies but mostly slow burn, folklore and mythology themed movies that explore superstition, sacrifice and dark aspects of nature. In the current era when Horror Comedies have found unprecedented box office success, folk horror movies like Maa is a step in the right direction for horror movie enthusiasts.
Maa is not in the same league as Tumbbad and the others listed above but is a good attempt at serious folk horror. The movie stays focused on the mythology with no moments of comic relief as unnecessary detours. It slowly and steadily sets up the battle of good vs evil reminiscent of Maa Kali's showdown with the Rakshas Rakhtbeej. The end result is a pretty good attempt at folk horror. It is not great and could have been much better but still pretty effective as a serious horror movie.
Technically the movie is pretty strong in its visual imagery, practical VFX, make up, background music and overall cinematography. Kajol comes across as a very potent protagonist and gives a very fiery performance. Ronit Roy also gives a pretty decent performance, as do most of the other supporting cast. Kherin Sharma as Kajol's daughter feels a bit miscast and unconvincing in her role. Kajol channels a really strongly motherly bond towards her daughter, but Kherin seems a bit bland. There are some pretty effective jump scares and some very well choreographed scary action sequences, however the movie would have benefited from more of such scares and sequences.
Horror enthusiasts, especially those who like well made, slow burn folk horror should like the movie. I hope the movie finds its audience at the box office, especially if we want to watch more serious horror movies in theaters. It would be sad to give it the Tumbbad treatment on initial theatrical release only to rediscover it as a cult classic on streaming later. It is not at the level of Tumbbad or Chhorii or even Bulbbul but is worthy to be in the same sub-genre of good folk horror movies. I liked it. 7.5/10.
