Heard good things about the film, despite its serious take, and had been looking forward to it and I had to check it out.
Arun (Manikandan) and Divya's (Sri Gouri Priya) have been in a six-year (on-and-off) relationship but have been slowly drifting apart. The entire film is about this divergence.
Usually, you'd expect a soup-boy (if you know, you know) story or an Irugapatru-type film that addresses something different but has a predictable ending. This was....different. Predictable, but I found the topics that this film chose to address to be...not for everyone. And therefore, the film itself, not being for everyone.
Movies about break-ups aren't new but the way they're told have been generic. This one addresses 'drifting away', not being to let go, almost redefines toxicity (stuff that the Boomer generation would scoff at and say "You're leaving your partner over this!? Suck it up!") for this day and age.
Both Manikandan and SGP were really good in this film and so was the supporting cast. Camerawork + Music (Y) but, in my books, not wowing. Writing - best part of the film.
You would have either seen this film unfold in real life around you or perhaps been through the events that transpire. If not, depending on your age demographic and experiences, you're going to either dismiss it or say 'I see where these issues are coming from...doesn't mean they're right...but there seems to be a larger problem. I can sympathize with them both.' Some may even find this therapeutic and gain new understanding, but regardless, this is a heavy film, could be hard to watch in parts, and isn't for everybody. Worth watching still.

The movie goes around a couple who were in a relationship for six years.
Good to see #SeanRoldan getting good projects and he's peaking as one of the promising music directors in the industry now. Felt songs and background score are apt to the movie. Had good musical vibe watching in theater. Happy for him.
Director #PrabhuramVyas has good potential as a writer and director.
#gouripriya and #Manikandan acted well. Because of their performance the movie sailed without boring.
I didn't get that depth of a six year's relationship, the director picked couple of random incidents that questions the trust, loyalty, possessiveness , being control freak attitude etc.
Manikandan gets into a gang of boys to consume drugs whereas Gouri too has a gang to freak out with girls + boys.
I kept thinking that director must have kept one or two girls in Manikandan's gang as well if so how Gouri would have taken it.. This layer is missing in the movie.
Overall a decent watch. It made me remember movies like Bachelor, love today - Radhika's advise/guidance to Pradeep when he was on the verge of a breakup is the apt advise for the Gouri - Manikandan pair as well. Could have been a bit more humorous and entertaining.

As an avid movie watcher, I was eager to watch "Lover" (2024), streaming on Disney+ Hotstar and available in 5 languages. Directed by Prabhuram Vyas and starring Manikandan, Sri Gouri Priya, Kanna Ravi, Geetha Kailasam, Harish Kumar, and Saravanan, "Lover" tells the story of Arun and Divya, a couple whose drastically different personalities are connected by their fondness for each other. Dating each other for six years, they find themselves at a crossroads as insecurity and possessiveness threaten to split them apart. The plot revolves around a toxic relationship with a realistic portrayal. Can these two lovers, a young woman who wants to be independent and a boyfriend who is insecure and possessive, manage to remain together?
In a world filled with movies portraying "toxic" relationships, like "Kabir Singh/Arjun Reddy," "Animal," and more, "Lover" stands apart. It delves into the complexities of Arun and Divya's relationship and breakup, offering both perspectives without judgment or bias, making it a refreshing take on love and heartbreak, allowing viewers to draw their own conclusions.
Just watched the movie and loved it, especially the climax. The movie forges perfect connections, leaving a lasting impact. What a fantastic performance from Manikandan and Gouri Priya.
Throughout "Lover," Prabhuram Vyas gives us variations of the opening scene - the fighting, the drinking, the gaslighting, the warning, the apologizing, the patching up - and keeps us engaged with the push and pull of this relationship at a crossroads. The writing tries to be truthful, reflecting the mindset of contemporary 20-somethings when it comes to relationships.
We see this in Divya, who loves Arun but has to make decisions that preserve her identity, even at great cost. We see this in her friends, who want to protect her but also let her make her own decisions. We see this in Madan (Kanna Ravi), Divya's new teammate, who finds himself drawn into a clash between two lovers. We also see this in Arun, who, for all his flaws, realizes the error of his ways and turns over a new leaf.
The sub-plot involving Arun's parents not only humanizes Arun's nature but also shows how even older adults are all at sea when it comes to dealing with relationship issues.
Kudos to the creators and the team behind this cinematic gem. The director has taken his best call and made the film in his own style. To someone in the corner who is broken and overcoming the love they are committed to, watch this-it will surely offer relief. The ultimate goal of love is to accept to let it go, a true trendsetter.
LOVE IS A BATTLE, LOVE IS A WAR, LOVE IS A BREAKUP, LOVE IS GROWING UP.
