I know Kevin Costner has a passion for the West and the history of the West. The directors did a real disservice to him but having him narrate this so blandly. He much better than this. Directors should've watched Yellowstone to Yosemite on Fox app. That's the real Kevin Costner.
The information in this docuseries is worthwhile. The guests sharing the history are impressive and knowledgeable. I learned things they don't teach in school.
I will recommend this series to family and friends but warn them to be prepared that Costner was not permitted to bring his passion for the stories to it. Let Costner be Costner l.

Kevin Costner's the West is the best documentary series of the American West that I have ever seen. I have lived my entire life in the west, and all of my ancestors came from Europe in the later 1800s. Their destination was the American West. Therefore, I can identify with their story told through the lens and the commentary of well known historians. I have learned so very much about the era from the time of the year American revolution (and long before) until current day. To have Doris Kearns Goodwin and David Brinkley, for example, not only telling the story but telling it from their own research and considerable knowledge, makes it unique. I highly recommend this series to anyone with whatever interest they have in the history of this country and the people that make it what it is today.
There is no doubt that there are a lot of facts seen from the "immigrants" side, and the story is fascinating and important. But it's hard to get around how it's all made boring by Kevin Costner as an uninspired narrator. It really sounds like he is narrating a cookbook, and I have experienced more inspiration by watching paint dry.
As the documentary has several directors, it can only have been Kevin Costner as producer who decided this. If so... it's time to retire, Kevin. It sounds like a "Give me the money and let me get out of here" situation.
Anyway, as mentioned, there are a lot of good stories and tales. It's hard to know what the Natives were thinking, and often it becomes pure guesswork. That's really not the documentary's fault, as Native Americans, unfortunately, are not known for their extensive libraries and documentation efforts at this time. It's really too bad.
But there is a lot to learn, so watch it with a lot of coffee, Red Bull, and sugar, and you might learn something.

Yaaaawn. Kevin Costner must have been paid to just put his name in the title. His introductions to each "lesson" (episode) are
For a history series such as this is to work the host should inspire interest in the audience through impassionated oration. Excitement. A clear sense of interest. Costner conveys none of the above.
In point of fact, it seems completely the opposite. Hands in pockets. Monotonous tone of voice. A sense of just passing the time & being done with his lines ASAP. Boredom.
The end result is a docu series that is over before it even started. When Costner has finished speaking, the audience has already stopped listening, agreeing with the boredom of their host. And so it goes that, when the next "expert" begins to speak we are either sleepy, sleeping or completely disinterested.
I did watch all of episode 1 but fell asleep within the first 5-10 minutes. Highly recommend if you need a little nap.

I only finished Episode 2 but I had to watch it especially after I seen some reviews saying it's a snorefest or boring with these really low reviews of 2 or 3.
I was hoping this wasn't the case because I love Costner and I love American history.
Thankfully these reviews were way off. So far the show is very enjoyable and definitely paints a picture of the old west and it's history.
So far I'm loving it and looking forward to binge watching the rest. I like how it goes into detail about the history of the Indian tribes and the battles and the different stories like Louis and Clark.
Really gets my imagination going and I love that. I would give this series a shot!
