Mohanlal making an appearance was the only motivating factor for me to watch Jilla. And Lalettan under-played subtly. I didn't expect this. But that's exactly why I liked it.
Lalettan could have been given more platform to exhibit his histrionics. But ironically, not exceeding is why the role stands out on its own. There is no hyper-realistic histrionics nor mad-cap mayhem. But there's the ubiquitious punch thrown into satisfy the local audience. Lal is definitely much more than, but sivans boundary stops there and lal becomes sivan and does ample justice by mellowing down.
There's this one shot in a far-off highway, where hes sitting like a King Dethroned, robbed of pride and glory and yet the director didn't subject the scene to melodrama. Instead he let Lalettan shed a teardrop ! I love Jilla

Its one of those Commercial rockets. Works primarily B-COS although its got stars, its got a engrossing story that keeps claiming attention. Something or other happens in Jilla ! either somebody is comical or somebody is fighting a war or somebody is asking justice. Its this "story-laden" aspect that works big-time for this movie. on the flip side, there was probably too much story. every scene had detailing which worked largely positively and at times, over-whelmed the frame. But try telling that to vijay die-hard fans ! Direction was smooth. Not over- doing anything and good tempo maintained throughout. I wonder why there were complaints on the pacing. i look forward to good story-telling and pacing is never a deterrent in an action masala. overall, Jolly enjoyable film
300 films get released every year in Tamilnadu. And another 300 sleep in the box. With stakes so high, its not surprising to see Vijay playing to the gallery. Ironically, it actually has a good screenplay that plays down its values and lets the stars outshine itself. But, that's precisely why it garnered a record-breaking opening.
Jilla has a backbone of a screenplay, with a few backstories thrown in efficiently. However, the typical hero steals the thunder from it and the crowd pulling elements dominate the depth. Director Neason has it in him to weave in both sentiment and entertainment appropriately. However, south being south, his hero steals all the attention from the story Jilla – Earth shattering Opening.

It's Pongal season, and time for some new movies. Having never missed any of Vijay's films from the outset, I made my way to a premiere show of 'Jilla' here in SL.
A typical mass masala type movie once again. Nothing new to Vijay definitely. The first half is full of comedy, and with Vijay as the lead actor, we definitely know that it's a treat to watch his comedy acts. That's definitely a plus to the movie. Towards the middle, some really emotional scenes, that definitely tends to move the crowd to silence in the theater. And an action packed, all star ending to seal the movie.
Upside? Good comedy by Vijay himself, no doubt. Some good father-son and family scenes. And good BG music too. The songs are sure a hit. Action packed, with a few twists here and there. And since it's Vijay and Mohanlal we are talking about, the acting is definitely too good and very enjoyable.
Downside? Soori hasn't been used enough for comedy. In Velayudham it was a better performance. And the heroine, Kajal's character too has been rushed. As the main female lead, I guess she deserved some more juice in the plot. And the length of the movie. That's the biggest fail. It goes on for more than 3 hours. I feel they could have cut down a bit on the unnecessary parts.
So what's the verdict? 7 is my rating. Not as superb as Thuppaki was. But it's above Thalaiva for sure. A sure Pongal treat for the die hard Vijay fans. And a decent watch to the other neutrals, to enjoy with the family as well.

Basically handling two major superstars in one film is not easy at all for anyone, even for a talented director. However, in this film direction towards vijay and mohanlal seemed to be much good either in action scenes or in fun making scenes. As this film been considered as the commercial entertainer, it totally exemplifies it undoubtedly. Along with vijay and mohanlal other co stars also given their best, which's the most highlight able point in this film. From beginning to end it could be considered as the tasty commercial recipe which has all ingredients perfectly, but only turned little badly in climax somehow. For a film, climax is the most significant segment which's because it may decide whether the film been enjoyed by the audience or not. According to me i only felt bad about he climax. Besides the climax, this film is a solid commercial entertainer which has lovable music, fun, sentiment, and action overall. In conclusion Jilla is an expectable treat for his fans, and no one should miss this entertainer for any reason.....

- WissenswertesReleased during Pongal festival of 2014 along with Veeram.
- Alternative VersionenThe UK release was cut, the distributor was advised that the film was likely to receive a 15 classification but that their preferred 12A classification could be obtained by making a number of cuts to reduce the bloody violence. When the finished version of the film was submitted for formal classification, edits had been made to reduce sequences of bloody violence, including blood sprays from both bullet impacts and machete blows. The formal submission was consequently classified 12A.
