Alex Winter presents an entertaining dark comedy that explores crime and bad decisions. Starring Kaya Scodelario and Josh Gad, with a script written by Michael MB Galvin.
Siblings Megan and Noah find themselves caught up in a chain of unfortunate events after discovering a dead body in their mother's house. This intriguing premise immerses us in a dark comedy with horror undertones that proves to be enjoyable entertainment, although it fails to fully live up to the initial expectations as the story's future paths are revealed.
The lead duo works efficiently, with Josh Gad carrying much of the film's weight thanks to his charisma and stage presence. Meanwhile, Kaya Scodelario perfectly complements her co-star, especially in the moments of despair caused by the bad decisions they make together.
A lighthearted and entertaining film that stands out especially in its first half, where it manages to open several interesting doors. Although it never fully establishes itself, it still performs quite well, with certain flashes of intelligence, in raising themes that bring freshness and dynamism to its proposal.
It's fun, funny, and charming in equal measure. It's a chaotic journey filled with despair and bad situations. Between the dark plot and the overall entertaining quality, "Adulthood" has a certain charm without being a great film. It stands out for the good work and versatility of its director, who knows how to keep the viewer attentive to the situations and their outcomes.
An independent offering that achieves some remarkable moments, leaving a sense of satisfaction with its achievements. With a touch of dark humor and a vibrant family drama, Adulthood presents itself as a highly satisfying film for both a niche and general audience.

Nope, this movie ain't going for me at all. Dark comedies and wacky stories are movies I can get behind but by simply trying to desperately be fun with bad chemistry, annoying characters, and humor that doesn't stick to the landing ground doesn't do a service to the comedic tone and purpose.
Alex Winter clearly wants to make a Coen Brothers thriller comedy but the directing on the writing, atmosphere and subject feels thin. The way it's been constructed feels messy, as the tone is all over the place, the production is cheap, and the characters are REALLY annoying and uninteresting, particularly the character of Josh Gad, I didn't believe a single word from his character. Kaya Scodelario tries as she is giving the best performance to her ability. But still, the humor aspects were unfunny, the writing is bad, the dialogue is poor, and many attempts on trying to be funny and crazy feels forced and rushed.
Overall, simply bad.

Visually and narratively, the film leans into the noir-satire niche: the basement, the suburban façade, the hidden messes of the past lurking under the lawn chairs-it all adds up to a vivid metaphor for how our "adult lives" are often built on shady foundations. The writing by Michael M. B. Galvin brings out themes of guilt, family inheritance (not just money, but trauma), and the absurdity of trying to "fix" what was never clean in the first place.
Adults do not truly exist, and intergenerational trauma is passed down to subsequent generations.
A true adult is one who has resolved their intergenerational trauma.
Or never had inter generational trauma.
Maybe one was raised by AI.
Or, like Sun Wukong, they were born from a stone.
Cause everybody screwed by their parents.

The low ratings are a bit harsh for this movie. I agree it's not super funny, although it's more of a dark comedy and not everyone gets that and have the same sense of humour, but it's certainly entertaining. What starts as a dilemma turns out to be a continuous bad decision making resulting in awkward situations. I thought the story had a good flow, easy to watch and never boring. As for the acting it was more than decent and that from the entire cast.

- WissenswertesDuring the play-sword-fight between Noah (Josh Gad) and Bodie (Anthony Carrigan), Noah is using a replica of the Atlantean Sword, aka the Conan-sword used by Conan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) in Conan der Barbar (1982). Bodie is using a roman-era sword, the type is called a Gladius. It was a very common sword in ancient roman military.
