R.I.P. Charles Cyphers: Sheriff Brackett from John Carpenter’s Halloween has passed away at 85
Image
Over the course of a screen acting career that stretched across fifty years, Charles Cyphers racked up 100 credits, but he’s best known for his collaborations with John Carpenter, having appeared in the director’s Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, Someone’s Watching Me!, Elvis, The Fog, and Escape from New York. His most popular character was Sheriff Leigh Brackett from the 1978 Halloween, a role he reprised in 1981’s Halloween II and, after a forty year absence from the Halloween franchise, 2021’s Halloween Kills. Sadly, we’ve lost this great character actor, as Variety reports that Cyphers has passed away “from a brief illness” at the age of 85.

Cyphers’ manager Chris Roe confirmed his passing to Variety and provided the following statement: “Charles was a lovable and sensitive man. He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and...

‘Hurricane’ Screenwriter Dan Gordon Resigns From WGA Over Failure to Condemn Hamas Attack
Dan Gordon
Dan Gordon, a 56-year member of the Writers Guild of America and reserve captain for the Israeli Defense Forces, published an open letter on Tuesday resigning from the union over its failure to condemn the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

“The failure of the Guild’s leadership to issue even the mildest condemnation of the worst massacre of a religious minority in the Middle East since Isis carried out similar atrocities against the Yezidis is appalling,” Gordon said in his letter. “It is corrosive to me as a writer and repugnant to every fiber of my being as a person of conscience.”

Gordon will assume “financial core” status, or “fi-core” for short. Those with fi-core status cannot vote in guild elections or receive other perks of full members, but still pay reduced dues and work under the same bargaining agreement terms as full members. Those who assume fi-core...

Best Procedurals Everyone Forgets About
Image
Television procedurals follow a tried-and-true formula that keeps crime mystery fans coming back for more. Each episode introduces an intense conflict for investigators to solve, or else face dire public safety consequences. The procedural genre has become more crowded in recent years, leaving a select golden few to thrive and others to be forgotten.

Some of the most notable TV procedurals, including Criminal Minds and Law and Order: Svu, unfold their stories in unique and clever ways. They can always keep their audiences guessing. Other thrilling shows, like Life and Murder in the First, try to replicate their successes but are ultimately pushed to the sidelines. Even though these series are typically forgotten by broader audiences, they still offer entertaining adventures.

Major Crimes, the continuation series of The Closer, ran for an incredible six seasons, totaling over 100 episodes,

While the show didn't receive as much critical acclaim as The Closer and didn't earn any Emmys, the show was a success for TNT.

The show premiered after The Closer's finale, with only a few casting changes, such as Kyra Sedgwick stepping down from her leading role.

What is the cast of Major Crimes doing now? Find out below!

Bonus: Corey Reynolds as David Gabriel from The Closer

Corey Reynolds is one of the few to appear in every episode of The Closer but not transfer to Major Crimes, mainly because his character David Gabriel got moved to the Da's office Bureau of Investigation as their liaison.

The former will continue the adventures of DC’s heralded Titans team (and introduce some new heavy hitters) while the latter will try to keep pace with Netflix’s prolific true crime output.

November is also when HBO Max gets a head start on the holiday season. A Christmas Story sequel, aptly titled A Christmas Story Christmas,...

SXSW Film Review: Mo McRae’s ‘A Lot Of Nothing’
Image
Racial divides, mistrust and misunderstandings get a rambunctious, if understandably inconclusive workout in A Lot of Nothing, a dynamic and agitating feature debut by Mo McRae that had its world premiere at South by Southwest in the Narrative Feature Competition section. Layers of suspicions, animosity and aggressive feelings ebb and flow as an upscale Los Angeles black couple plays host to another couple and, unexpectedly, to a lower-class white cop who’s paying a price for what he did the night before. After a powerful first act, this turbulent work is obliged to downshift somewhat as it seeks some kind of conclusion that won’t be too pat or simplistic given the complex dynamics at hand. While it doesn’t end on a satisfying note, this is nonetheless an excitingly combustible piece that announces a vibrant talent unafraid to confront thorny issues head-on.

Co-written by McRae, who has acted in...

Critics Choice Awards Film Voters Guide: Memorable Moments and a Pivotal Year
Image
In 2003 at the eighth annual Critics Choice Awards, there were three in the actor race: Jack Nicholson for “About Schmidt,” Daniel Day-Lewis for “Gangs of New York” and Robin Williams for “One Hour Photo.” There was a tie — between Nicholson and Day-Lewis — but Williams ended up stealing the show when Nicholson invited him on stage. “Robin would you come up and would you give the funniest acceptance speech I ever gave?” Nicholson inquired. Williams then launched into a lengthy “speech” that had stars from Renée Zellweger to Nicole Kidman howling and was praised by the media.

It remains a standout moment in the organization’s long history and a personal favorite of Joey Berlin, CEO of the Critics Choice Assn. (Cca), who has served as executive producer on every Critics Choice Awards broadcast since its inception with the film awards in 1995; TV awards began in 2011. Now, the Critics Choice Awards find themselves at a crossroads.

Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 Picks Up An Alien Expert
Olivia Swann, Shayan Sobhian, Nick Zano, Amy Louise Pemberton, Matt Ryan, Adam Tsekhman, Caity Lotz, Tala Ashe, Jes Macallan, and Lisseth Chavez in Legends of Tomorrow (2016)
Legends of Tomorrow ended season 5 with a little bit of space, and the promise of more space, and now the first big casting announcement of season 6 fulfills some of that promise.

At the Legends of Tomorrow panel at DC FanDome day 2, Lisseth Chavez was announced as joining the crew of the Waverider in the upcoming season. Chavez will be playing Esperanza “Spooner” Cruz, a tech whiz with a history of alien abduction who “believes she has the ability to communicate telepathically with aliens.” That part is quoted because one gets the sense that this is an open question that will be part of the mystery of Legends of Tomorrow season 6.

Chavez most recently played Officer Vanessa Rojas on Chicago P.D., and had roles on Murder in the First, The Fosters, and The Oa prior to that.

Spooner has no immediately obvious comics counterparts, and we don’t get much...

Lisseth Chavez Exits ‘Chicago P.D.’, Joins ‘DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow’ As New Series Regular In Season 6
Image
Chicago P.D.’s Lisseth Chavez is set as a new series regular in the upcoming sixth season of season 6 of the CW’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. The Warner Bros. TV-produced superhero drama moved in to cast Chavez shortly after she became available following a season-long stint as a series regular on NBC’s Chicago P.D.

Chavez will play Esperanza “Spooner” Cruz. Tough and self-sufficient, Spooner Cruz lives off the grid, devising ingenious tech for the detection of — and defense against — space aliens. And while some might call her paranoid, she calls it being prepared. A survivor of a childhood alien encounter, Spooner now believes she has the ability to communicate telepathically with aliens — making her the perfect recruit for Waverider captains Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) and the Legends who, in season six, will be hunting down extraterrestrials who have been displaced throughout history.

Neil Patrick Harris
Doogie Howser Reboot Series with Female Lead Set for Disney+
Neil Patrick Harris
Doogie Howser, M.D., the series that plucked an adolescent Neil Patrick Harris from obscurity, putting him on an eventual path to contemporary comedy superstardom, is getting a reboot series, this one brandishing a female lead.

Keeping this new version of the 1989-1993 ABC dramedy series in the Disney corporate tentpole, the reboot effort under the working title, Doogie Kealoha, M.D., is set to manifest on platform Disney+ as a streaming serial offering, reports Variety. In a creative choice analogous to the Harris-starring original, the reboot will center on the titular character, who’s similarly a 16-year-old prodigy-turned-doctor. However, in this case, said teen doctor is a half-Asian, half-white female practicing medicine in Hawaii (in contrast to the original’s setting of Los Angeles).

Interestingly enough, Doogie Kealoha is maintaining a direct connection to original star Harris, since it will take shape under the creative stewardship of showrunner Kourtney Kang,...

Superman & Lois has officially found its Lana Lang in Emmanuelle Chriqui.

The CW’s developing Supergirl spinoff, Superman & Lois, has cast Canadian actress Chriqui as a series regular, set to play the classic Superman comic book presence and frequent live-action-adapted character for the small screen Arrowverse shows, reports Deadline. Chriqui will portray a version of the character, named Lana Lang-Cushing, who’s described as “the loan officer at Smallville Bank who stayed in Smallville when others left for something bigger and brighter. Lana reestablishes her friendship with her old friend, Clark Kent, during one of the most difficult periods in her life.”

Of course, the addition of Lana to the mix implies a major component to the series dynamic, since she is famously known as the first love of...
