I caught this insanely hilarious short film by chance after some researches revolving another special related with "East of Eden". The classic
novel by John Steinbeck turned into a classic film by Elia Kazan becomes a fun and raunchy short comedy with the exact same basis, or let's just say
that things are a little more explicit rather than the subtext and the unseen yet known scenario of it all.
"Gossip Girl" and "You" star Penn Badgley gives life to young and rebel Cal Trask, once played by the eternal James Dean, but Penn's Cal carries a
different kind of rebelness as he fights his dad (Brian Shoaf), of whom he doesn't know how to get his attention and love, and also tries to steal his brother Aron (Philip
Quinaz) girlfiend Abra (A. M. Lukas). Whatever goodness he's trying to do doesn't help anyone around him, it's all about creating a little chaos in the family.
And there's also the hidden truth about the brothers mother being a prostitute but the revelation isn't there to
shock audiences anymore, it's all about great moments of laughter and some surprises.
I don't recall laughing so hard with a short film in ages and the fun thing is that there isn't a betrayal of the original material; it's simply
telling us in a short, straight-forward manner with loads of humor. Badgley was sensational and hysterical to watch, as the seductive and foul-mouthed Cal.
A real devil in disguise, but also a real pleasure to watch (the dinner sequence is comedy gold). 10/10.
