Boot Camp

I saw this movie on a list and I read the brief summary. I thought it was just another coming of age film set at a summer camp somewhere in the US. I wasn't familiar with the cast and psyched myself up to believe they were inexperienced. I was prepared to jump to something else if the plot and dialog became cliched.

This film actually has a good script, it's funny and it plays against the normal cliches. The cast who were unknown to me, do a really good job. The dialog is good, it's not dumb. It moved at just the right speed. It has messages, but it isn't preachy about them. And kudos to the director for making the film successful.

This is a modern classic, but not in a good way, but in terms of clichés.

For example, I like how in such films, which seem to advocate self-love, the search for self-confidence instead of chasing after improving appearance and rejection of beauty stereotypes, the heroine's love interest is always a tall handsome guy with great abs. Apparently the rule "you're beautiful no matter how you look" works selectively, eh?

And of course, the moment with taking off the t-shirt is included, and remember, this is certainly not objectification, because he is a guy!

I initially chalked this down as a typical Wattpad film like After or Sidelined, expecting the worst. And while it is still Wattpad-y, it's honestly a surprisingly funny and cute coming of age story. Also a firm believer in casting Drew Ray Tanner in more leading man roles, he killed this! Rachel Boudwin also acted great in this role. I think the fact they could actually act made this film even more enjoyable. No this is not going to be A Marriage Story or Titanic or even Easy A. At the end of the day it is a wattpad film, but honestly a really great one that proves that maybe wattpad films can actually be good. However, this is the only one that has seemed to further this theory. It's a fun, romantic, humorous movie that mainly stays away from being outright cringy. Loved the movie. Please cast Drew Ray Tanner as a leading man, I would pay a million times over for that.

Then this film is for you!

I almost skipped over this one because of the 5.6 star rating. Then I read some of the reviews and realized there were actually a lot of 10 star reviews! I don't think this film is worthy of 10 stars (not much is in my book). Yet, I think this movie is actually well done and it accomplishes what it sets out to do.

The leads have really good chemistry and I thought the acting was actually very good. I haven't seen almost anyone from this cast before but I thought they all did a fantastic job. It didn't feel corney like it had the potential of being. Still better than most Hallmark films and many YA romance I've seen. This is a fun watch and if you like the above- give it a view!

TL;DR: Better than expected, good acting and chemistry from leads, a bit trope-y but enjoyable.

I loved the message that this movie conveyed and the acting was honestly really good compared to so many other movies. It made me giggle, smile, and even shed a tear. The raw emotions given through this movie was something that is hard to miss. I would easily watch it again if I were given the choice, and I will definitely recommend this to someone who is looking to watch a rom-com! It's been a while since I've liked a movie this much, and perhaps it's because I can see myself in the main character, but nonetheless, the message that was portrayed in this movie was delivered, and the chemistry between the cast was off the charts.
