Having seen the trailer, I was really looking forward to this movie. And now that I have seen it, I can honestly say that I wasn't disappointed.
However, the concept of the old west and aliens thrown together into one spot is not new like this film's poster may suggest, you are in for something completely different.
This is a dystopia future trapped in dysfunctional dark 80's world which while visually very appealing still does seem a bit odd to me, and takes some getting used to.
The story in "Mission from Outer Space 2037" is pretty easy to follow; two sisters find themselves without parents after a pretty realistic car wreck.
Thrown into a desperate fight against a far superior species of aliens is the sub plot to Russian cyborgs and the struggle against one's faith in God.
Absolution in the end of the protagonist Russian debacle in a showdown for supremacy, is a wonderful sub plot to the return to faith in the film's closure.

It's been a long while since I've watched an original movie. My experience tells me that the creators of this film did a pretty decent job of telling a wacky, unique story for a modern audience, while at the same time keeping the essential elements of old school action in tact. This movie features reports of strange, electromagnetic disturbances in a traditional futuristic dystopia world. In another bow to the modern context, we are placed in the future, but not to far removed from the beloved dial up phone set.
If you get a little confused trying to follow the plot, don't feel stupid. This isn't an easy story to follow but it gets high marks for keeping it interesting despite that problem.
The interesting characters, good cinematography, fun James Bond-like moments, just the right amount of action scenes keeps you interested. And one very memorable scene with Tom Sizemore is a tear jerker for sure. That scene with Sizemore will fill any Sizemore fan's heart with happiness.
Get this film a look see and you won't be let down.

I am just going to add my voice to the chorus of praise for this indie jewel of a movie. It is as near to being perfect as any I have ever seen. I will say that it is much better than other smaller budget alien films. This looks very big budget. The aliens were clean and thankfully not CGI, or at least did not look like they were. But I do love all the characters in this movie. I have rarely seen a movie where all the characters were so well developed. Even most serious dramas seldom develop each character so completely. None of these characters are stereotypes once you got into their story. A very special film and very refreshing.
It stars a multi-generational cast that works well and frankly I have not seen anything like this.
Sure we have children in cinema, but this one hits a mark watching children completely talk and act like adults and pull it off to be believable.
Warning this film is not for children. There is plenty of blood and guts to make the young viewer run for cover. However, Mission From Outer Space 2037 is a grower, a film that pays better dividends on the opening and closing of the film but makes up for the rather slow center with lots of strong, well thought out comedy.
Viewers once armed with the knowledge of what sort of theme drives it on will find themselves rooting for both the bad guy and the good guy. Yet it still frustrates greatly and you can see why it proved so divisive, It has a strong Judeo-Christian message. The message is fantastic but for the anti religious zealots it may be a turn off. Respectfully for the faith based crowd this is a winner.

There's a lot to commend Mission From Outer Space 2037. It's not often we see such a moody atmospheric thriller about an alien invasion and I will praise this movie later. However there is a lot of things happening in different directions, so if not for the comedy, I would have disengaged.
The aliens are coming. And sure enough just like everyone has predicted, lights appear over a small urban farm home in cloud formation which heralds the start of little green men coming to wipe us out. While a bit on the nose of close encounters, stormy clouds for the aliens mode of intergalactic travel, but then again how many times have we seen the flying saucer bit throughout cinema. So with that in mind we can only see this as a homage to an 80's classic instead of a repeat once again to the flying saucer bit which we don't have in this film....thankfully.
Unlike close encounters, we do get to see aliens up close and they are tall and slender, however not enough of them to satisfy my pallet.
At no point does anyone question a possible invasion which starts to become ridiculous when the film talks about it more than it is actually happening.
Let's be honest here, jet liners crashing and a very realistic car wreck was a great start and we have a slow draw in the middle sprinkled with some great dialogue and good acting. In the end, we get robbed of the alien invasion, only getting teased, but feel satisfied with plenty of strong characters making amends to fallen and broken lives.
There's one other thing: two sisters seem to be channeling the minds of Newton , Darwin and Einstein. Listen to this kid's dialogue, you won't find typical "home alone" chatter but a pendulum of very slick tongue and cheek to surprising life lessons. It's not too in your face, but far enough for one to discover and enjoy.
Make that one more point: Why would aliens invade this planet?
I guess we just assume aliens are bad.
Better make that two things, because if the subtext is about rediscovering one's faith, then did we ever get that answer?
I certainly can't fault the good bits and I will recommend this movie even to those who don't like SF/Horror very much .
Warning: If you are a person of faith you will love this film. If not, then just get over it, there is enough in the film to go around for everyone accept for the "gore and kill film lovers" those patrons best to turn towards a repeat of classic horror.
