It is mainly the first half that scores, the recourse to magicism in the second half is as annoying as 'Bo is Afraid', but the bleak, darkly humorous ending is very much in keeping with the tone of the first half.

The Ukrainian government has missed opportunities due to chronic corruption and incompetence, and now that we're in the age of atomised, mindless trend-followers, it's even harder to regain that lost opportunity - something that reflects not just what's going on in this particular country, but globally. The social issues intertwine and shape the social landscape in the first half of the film; they are somehow universal and even I, as a foreigner, can relate to them, which adds to the abruptness of the narrative transitions and the inexplicable nature of the magicism in the second half.

Nevertheless, I would like to pay my respects to the film, which was difficult to make, and to those who died in the service of their country.
