‘Wednesday’ Season 2 Excels With Edgier Tone But Still Has Plenty of Kinks to Work Out [Review]
Image
In an age of streaming television that’s increasingly driven by the Almighty Algorithm, Wednesday is a program that feels especially created through committee; as if Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, and Tim Burton stitched a bunch of young adult novels, focus group notes, and trending topics together, struck them with electricity, and then forced the Frankenstein’s Monster to watch Burton’s filmography from the 2000s forward. This, curiously, isn’t necessarily a bad thing and it’s almost always at the least, entertaining. It’s just not the first thing that comes to mind with a modern adaptation of The Addams Family.

This is nothing new for anyone who saw the first season of Wednesday and, if anything, it’s helped weed out the skeptical fans who weren’t on board with this tonal chimera. Wednesday is a series that works, almost in spite of itself and largely because...

Before Fallout, Ella Purnell Starred In A Major Superhero Misfire
Image
Best known now for her roles in dark TV shows like "Yellowjackets" and "Fallout," Ella Purnell is one of those performers whose filmography goes much further back than you'd think. She's the type of actor where you'll watch an older movie for the first time in a while and realize, "Wait, that was her?" I myself had that exact realization when I rewatched "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" for the first time since it came out in 2016. Elsewhere, on Twitter, it seems other people are having the same realization about the 2013 movie "Kick-Ass 2."

As "Kick-Ass" fans may recall, the superhero sequel featured a storyline about Mindy, aka Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz), trying to transition from a life of fighting crime to one of navigating regular high school drama. In doing so, she runs afoul of mean girl Brooke (Claudia Lee), who bullies Mindy in ways that might...

Tim Burton’s Twisted X-Men Dupe Gets Overtaken by ‘F1’ at the Global Box Office
Image
Director Tim Burton was having a pretty difficult time at the box office for over a decade before Beetlejuice Beetlejuice broke past expectations and grossed around $450 million worldwide. His sole "hit" during that difficult phase was the literary adaptation Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Described as a cross between the Harry Potter books and the X-Men films, Miss Peregrine grossed nearly $300 million worldwide in 2016, against a reported budget of $110 million. The movie featured Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, and Ella Purnell in the central roles, and received mixed reviews. Miss Peregrine has now been overtaken at the global box office by Apple's hit sports drama F1.

Directed by Joseph Kosinskiand starring Brad Pitt in the lead role of a seasoned race car driver summoned to rescue a failing Formula One team from disaster, F1has also passed the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office. It's now the highest-grossing...

Hugh Jackman Unveils 'Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie' at CinemaCon
Image
Here's one you might not have "herd" about: Hugh Jackman is trading his Wolverine claws for Shepherding horns, as he is starring alongside Emma Thompson in Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie. The movie, as you may have guessed from its very specific title, is a detective story involving sheep, but since that is a slightly elusive and broad premise, the MCU actor appeared in a video segment at CinemaCon 2025 to provide a few more details about it. He also unveiled the first footage for the upcoming Amazon feature, which he describes as "a bit of a whodunit."

The footage, shown during the Amazon MGM Studios panel on Wednesday night, which was attended by The Hollywood Reporter, was succeeded by Thompson expressing her joy and enthusiasm for the project. "It was, as you'll see from the clip, the most fantastic, loving, beautiful idea, this synthesis between animals and people,...

Ella Purnell Says 'Fallout' Season 2 Is Full of "Twists and Turns"
Image
Ella Purnellwas a guest at Mega Con Orlando this weekend, where the actor was part of a panel that discussed her roles in shows such as Arcane, Yellowjackets, Sweetpea, and, of course, Fallout, in which she plays Vault Dweller Lucy. When Fallout Season 1 premiered on Amazon Prime Video in April 2024, newcomers and veteran fans welcomed the live-action adaptation of the nuclear world with open arms. Created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet and executive produced by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the eight-episode first season received rave reviews from audiences and critics.

The video game adaptation managed to remain faithful to the source material of the video games both in its thematic elements and in its impressive production design while also not alienating those unfamiliar with the games it's based on. After the exciting conclusion of the first season, Fallout is set to return for a second season at an unspecified date.

Frank Grillo's 2016 Horror Movie About A Dystopian USA Pushes Onto Streaming Charts
Image
Frank Grillo's 2016 horror movie about a dystopian USA has pushed onto streaming charts, almost nine years after it was originally released in theaters. Grillo is best known for his action movies, from the grounded events of movies like End of Watch, to his role in the cast of Creature Commandos as Rick Flag Sr., part of the wider DC Universe. The actor is also no stranger to superhero franchises beyond the Dcu, having also portrayed Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These roles, however, extend further than just his recognizable action portrayals.

Grillo's multifaceted roles in action films and the superhero genre have also made their way to live-action TV, with him taking on the role of Bill Bevilaqua on the cast of Tulsa King season 2, starring opposite Sylvester Stallone. A24's Worst Reviewed Horror Film Of 2024 Finds Newfound Streaming Success After Box Office Disappointment
Image
A24's worst-reviewed horror film of 2024 finds streaming success after disappointing at the box office. The independent studio's first horror film was director Robert Eggers' debut in 2015, The Witch, which received rave reviews from critics and became a sleeper hit at the box office. In turn, The Witch helped establish the distinct tone for A24 horror movies, which widely prioritize atmospheric tension over cheap jump scares, as seen in Talk to Me, Ti West's X trilogy, Ari Aster's Hereditary and Midsommar, and more.

With the calendar having turned, 2024 was another strong year for A24. The overwhelming majority of their movies from the past year earned critical acclaim and, in turn, strong Rotten Tomatoes scores, including their Oscar contenders, Sing Sing and The Brutalist (92%). This extends to A24 horror as well, with I Saw the TV Glow (84%), MaXXXine (72%), and Heretic (91%) all finding success. However, two of A24's biggest...

Matt Damon's $415M Action Sequel Becomes Streaming Success 9 Years Later
Image
It's challenging to put Matt Damon into a box as an actor. He's starred in everything from romantic comedies to dramas, fantasy epics to biopics. His first major hit was Good Will Hunting in 1997, a movie that won him and cowriter Ben Affleck the Best Original Screenplay Oscar at the Academy Awards. It was in 2002, however, that Damon ascended to a new level of movie stardom, taking on the role of amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne in The Bourne Identity.

Damon reprised his role as Bourne for three sequels, but his work in the action-heavy movies extended beyond this franchise. Damon had action-forward roles in movies like Green Zone (2010), True Grit (2010), Elysium (2013), and The Martian (2016), the latter two of which mix action with science fiction. Though Damon appeared in crime thriller The Instigators last year, his last true foray into pure action was almost 10 years ago now.

Every Peculiar & Their Powers In Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children Explained
Image
Tim Burton's dark fantasy movie, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, stars Asa Butterfield and Ella Purnell as some of the titular "Peculiars." Though the cast of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children stars some of Tim Burton's regular collaborators and was adapted from a very popular novel, it received middling reviews when released. Now, it is considered one of Burton's most underrated films, and one of the best movies about kids with powers. The story concerns Jake, who grew up hearing his grandfather talk about monsters, only to discover that the monsters are real, and Miss Peregrine can help.

The movie introduces Miss Peregrine, played by Eva Green, who has provided a home for children with special powers, and are known as Peculiars, by creating a time loop. This allows the children to relive the same day over and over again in safety, without aging. Miss Peregrine,...

Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Repeated A Complaint About His $296M Dark Fantasy Movie Trending On Streaming
Image
Tim Burton's 2016 movie Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is now streaming on Max, and although the movie is currently trending, it nevertheless shares criticisms with Burton's much more recent movie Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to the beloved 1988 cult classic Beetlejuice, premiered in theaters on September 6th, 2024. Impressively, the sequel saw the return of some of the biggest stars from the original Beetlejuice's cast of characters, including Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz.

Because of the extensive cultural significance Beetlejuice Beetlejuice represented, it was a major box office success. The movie grossed $451 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo, making it one of the highest-grossing movies of 2024. Even so, there were plenty of criticisms of and complaints about Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, some of which have been lodged at multiple Tim Burton movies, including Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Tim Burton Found His Perfect Johnny Depp Replacement 9 Years Ago In This $296M Movie On Streaming – But It Still Hasn't Paid Off
Image
Back in 2016, Tim Burton collaborated with a young actor on Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and though the actor would have been a perfect Johnny Depp replacement, the pair have not worked together again. Since the mid-1980s, Burton has proved himself to be a groundbreaking director, showcasing his unique style and strangely heartfelt stories. From major franchises to beloved stop-motion movies, Burton's projects are the kind that are easily recognizable and highly anticipated. However, there is one element of Burton's career that he has struggled to maintain in recent years.

Burton has become known for a number of different things, but one notable aspect of his career has been Burton's propensity to work with the same actors over and over again. The two most obvious examples of this are Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. Over the years, Depp has starred in eight Burton movies, while Carter has appeared in seven.

Why 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' Deserves a Sequel
Image
As breakout TV star Ella Purnell looks to capitalize on her 2024 success, Tim Burton should consider making a sequel to the ill-fated Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The 2016 teen fantasy film, cut from the cloth of Harry Potter and X-Men, follows the mysterious residents of the titular home, where a group of youngsters with strange superpowers come of age, develop their skills, and embrace their peculiarities while fending off a formidable foe.

Despite scoring mixed-to-positive reviews and nearly tripling its budget at the international box office, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was shuttered before receiving its planned cinematic sequel. Now that a decade has passed and Ella Purnell has become a highly sought-after Hollywood A-lister, Tim Burton Productions and 20th Century Fox should revisit the movie and make an official sequel.

'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' Is a Streaming Hit on Max
Image
Tim Burton is an iconic director known for cleverly combining horror and fantasy. His movies have an eerie aesthetic and tell whimsical stories, and the recent success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is testament to just how they enthrall viewers. It’s not the spooky season, but fans looking for a Burton follow-up should take the opportunity to revisit one of his polarizing works from 2016, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Starring Ella Purnell, whose talents have only recently been recognized with shows like Yellowjackets and Fallout, the movie is a streaming hit, ranking in Max’s top 10.

Back in the day, Tim Burton, the visionary director behind classics like The Nightmare Before Christmas, teamed up with then-rising star Ella Purnell, to bring the movie to life. And even if it was an unlikely collaboration, the casting was not what earned Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children its divisive reception.

Ella Purnell's Sweetbitter Show Is Just As Good As Fallout & Yellowjackets — Why It Deserves A Rewatch
Image
Several years before Ella Purnell's popular roles in Yellowjackets and Fallout, the young actress starred in the underrated drama series, Sweetbitter. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name written by Stephanie Danler, Sweetbitter tells the story of Tess, who moves to New York City in 2006 and begins working in a highly regarded restaurant. Running for just two seasons, Sweetbitter wasn't highly received upon release, which may have contributed to its premature cancelation.

Sweetbitter was the first true multiple-season television series for Ella Purnell, after she had mostly worked on films like Never Let Me Go, Maleficent, and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Premiering in 2018 on Starz, Sweetbitter only aire a total of 14 episodes before it was canceled due to low viewership. Despite that, there is a lot to like about Sweetbitter, and Ella Purnell's character, Tess, is a fascinating protagonist to follow throughout her journey.

While Waiting For Wednesday Season 2, Watch Tim Burton & Ella Purnell’s $296M Dark Fantasy Movie Now Trending On Streaming
Image
With the anticipation for Wednesday season 2 increasing as its 2025 arrival approaches, Tim Burton has a great fantasy film trending on Max that’s perfect to watch while waiting. While Burton rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s for his distinctive style and ingenuity in the dark fantasy genre, yielding timeless hits like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and his Batman duology, the director’s films in the 2010s saw a notable decline in consistency with critical and audience adoration. Ultimately, it wasn’t until 2022’s Wednesday that Burton saw a true career comeback, leading to his impressive Beetlejuice 2 success in 2024.

Though Burton experienced several box office disappointments and critical misfires in the 2010s, there were still some notable hits in this era that paved the way for his resurgence with Wednesday. Among his most promising entries was Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children in 2016, which proved a moderate commercial and critical success.

The 10 Highest-Grossing Movies Of 2024
Image
2024 was a straight-up wild year at the box office. I have no doubt that a great many people reading this are more casual observers of such things, looking to find out what the biggest movies of the year were. That said, it truly cannot be overstated what a rollercoaster of a year this was.

Due in large part to last year's SAG and WGA strikes, the first half of the year was a mess. Were it not for a handful of big, breakout hit movies that helped save the box office, theaters may well have been in serious trouble. But theaters did rebound in a big way, with a wide array of releases resonating with audiences in the back half of the year. From the return of major franchises like "Alien: Romulus" to unexpected breakout hits like "It Ends With Us," there was much to celebrate. But what were the...

Tim Burton and Ella Purnell's Underrated Fantasy Movie Deserves a Sequel
Image
Tim Burton is, without a doubt, one of the most signature filmmakers of the past several decades when it comes to style. Although he has many imitators, no one but Burton has been able to capture the quirky mix of whimsy, fantasy, and horror that makes his films so entertaining. Although he is responsible for many classics, Burton had been on a bit of a losing streak in the past decade when it came to quality; despite grossing over $1 billion, Alice in Wonderland was a visually grotesque adventure, and other projects like Dark Shadows were outright bombs. Perhaps due to this decline in critical praise, some of Burton's most ardent fans avoided Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children altogether, as the fantasy adventure was a box office disappointment. However, Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children was a surprisingly interesting spin on the dark fantasy genre that left the door open for a sequel.

Wednesday Reveals How Tim Burton Should Have Handled This $296 Million Fantasy Movie
Image
Wednesday debuted on Netflix in November 2022 to mostly favorable reviews, identifying the path that Tim Burton should have taken with one $296 million fantasy movie. American animator and director Tim Burton directed four out of eight episodes of Wednesday's first season and also served as executive producer. His imprint was all over the excellent series, giving it a spooky and gothic aesthetic and tone that perfectly suited its subject matter. Contrastingly, out of all of Tim Burton's movies, one of the least successful may be Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

2016 movie Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was far from bad - it was lovable and carried all the hallmarks of a Burton classic. It was heavily stylized with rich influences from high camp to German expressionism and may be one of Ella Purnell's best movies. Plus, its premiere on Netflix proved that it gets the audience vote if not the critics' vote.

Tim Burton is certain he will work with Johnny Depp again
Image
With just one movie, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp felt destined to work together, bringing a unique presence of gothic oddity to the screen. But it obviously wouldn’t just be Edward Scissorhands that they collaborated on. No, they would have a total of eight big screen pairings. But the most recent was 2012’s Dark Shadows, with Burton having done five movies without Depp since. So what gives? Will we ever see another Tim Burton / Johnny Depp movie?

Tim Burton is confident that there will be a place for Johnny Depp in a future film of his, telling IndieWire, “Well, I’m sure there will be [another collaboration].” But Burton was careful to note that his reason for not working with an actor is never personal. “I never feel like, oh, I’m going to use this and that actor. It usually has to be based on the project I’m working on.

The Netflix Success Of Ella Purnell's Underrated $296 Million Fantasy Movie Proves It Needed A Sequel
Image
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, starring Ella Purnell, has found streaming success on Netflix, proving that the movie deserved a sequel. The 2016 Tim Burton movie adapts Ransom Riggs' novel, which follows a teenager named Jacob Portman who learns that the fantastical stories told by his grandfather, Abe Portman, are true. Jacob encounters peculiars, individuals with rare abilities, and terrifying monsters that hunt the peculiars, all while going on his own hero's journey. Purnell plays a peculiar named Emma Bloom who grows close to Jacob.

Despite the novel's popularity and the story seeming like a perfect fit for Burton's directing style, it received mixed reviews. However, eight years later, the fantasy movie became a Netflix hit, as it earned the number one spot in Netflix's Global Top 10 during the week of September 30-October 6 with 7.1 million views and 15.1 million hours viewed. This success is a reminder that Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children...

Most Iconic Tim Burton Movie Couples
Image
Tim Burton creates popular films that often cover the darker side of fantasy. He sets his films in towns where it's perpetually Halloween or haunted villages. Burton honed his own highly recognizable style over the years: the characters have large and sunken eyes and an elegantly disheveled Gothic style. Yet all of his films have a very human soul, and the heart of a romantic beast within many of his so-called monsters.

Dark fantasy is a great setting for some of the sweetest romances. These romances incorporate diverse tropes, from sweet first love to opposites attract to reincarnated lovers. Some couples are healthy and perfect together, while others are doomed, twisted, and tragic. Either way, they're memorable fan favorites for supernatural and Gothic romance audiences. They're a big part of what has made Burton so successful.

Updated on November 17, 2024, by Robert Vaux: Tim Burton's films number far more than ten,...

Ella Purnell on Terrifying Onlookers While Researching Serial Killers for ‘Sweetpea,’ Finding Her Voice as Producer and How She’s Prepping for ‘Fallout’ Season 2
Image
On a flight not so long ago, Ella Purnell managed to terrify the woman sat next to her after accidentally giving her a glimpse of the recent viewing history on her laptop.

“It was basically 50 shows about serial killers,” she recalls, speaking over coffee in a café near her flat in East London (which she admits she’s rarely been in due to excessive recent travel). “But specifically female serial killers, because they’re very different from male serial killers.”

As Purnell notes, the concerned neighbor was carrying a baby, which she then “literally moved” away from her.

“So I had to explain. I was like, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m actually researching, it’s part of my job… I promise you, I’m not a monster,'” she recalls. “But I’m not sure how convincing I was.”

The Brit was, thankfully, telling the truth. A year on,...
