Since his first film, Writer/Director Wes Anderson has become known for his highly visual combination of bright colors with an older aesthetic. His costuming and set design have a very specific signature that makes it easy to identify when watching a Wes Anderson movie. With him currently working on a new film, The Phoenician Scheme, which reunites him with his muse Bill Murray, we take a look back at all his feature-length films and try to figure out where they rank. To note, his recent Netflix shorts, including the Oscar-winning The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar aren’t included.

International sales agent Lucky Number has picked up Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani’s animated feature “Bouchra,” which will premiere in the competitive Platform section of the Toronto Film Festival next month. Variety debuts the first clip from the film.
The New York Film Festival will host the film’s U.S. premiere later in September.
The film centers on Bouchra, a Moroccan filmmaker in New York, who is paralyzed by the fear of the blank page. A phone call with her mother in Casablanca has memories resurfacing. Their tender yet complex exchange sparks a creative breakthrough, opening a journey through family bonds, daughterhood, and the thrill of love.
Bennani said: “What Orian and I have in common is we look for when something feels true. It’s a balance between a certain tenderness and humor that is not trying to be cool or relevant— it just is. That’s...

More than 25 years later, Macaulay Culkin revealed he was almost an early muse for Wes Anderson in the director’s sophomore feature.
The Golden Globe nominee recently shared his regrets about missing the audition for Anderson’s 1998 comedy Rushmore as he took a post-Richie Rich (1994) hiatus from acting following a busy career as a child star.
“I was actually pretty good at reading, I was voraciously reading through the scripts, but there was a couple that slipped through,” he said on Hot Ones.
“I remember about two years later, clearing out the house and throwing out the old scripts and I saw the one that I didn’t read was Rushmore,” added Culkin. “I was like, ‘Oh dang.’ I probably could have done that one.”
Although he admitted he “couldn’t imagine anyone but [Jason] Schwartzman doing that part,” Culkin added, “But at the same time I’m like, ‘Oh man,...

With a new film featuring a star-studded ensemble led by an Oscar-winner, Wes Anderson did wonders with his most recent pic, which is now a streaming hit in the U.S. The Phoenician Scheme, starring Benicio del Toro, hit theaters nationwide on May 30, and less than two months later, on July 25, it landed on Peacock, where it has maintained a very well-deserved dominating spot.
Per FlixPatrol, The Phoenician Scheme is #1 on Peacock in the U.S., a spot it has held on to since arriving on the streamer, except on July 29, when it climbed down to second place. Meghann Fahy’s thriller Drop now takes up that position, with Robert De Niro’s 2023 comedy, About My Father, as #3. Rounding out the top five are the 2008 animation Horton Hears a Who! and Hotel Transylvania 2.

Though they hail from different cultures and eras, Satyajit Ray and Wes Anderson share a love for visual symmetry, meticulous framing, and bittersweet storytelling. This piece traces how Ray’s humanism and craft influenced Anderson’s cinematic grammar, offering a quiet dialogue between masters of aesthetic melancholy. Though they hail from different cultures, continents, and historical contexts, Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray and Wes Anderson are linked by more than just Wes’ admiration of the Indian filmmaking legend. They are kindred cinematic spirits, bound by a shared affinity for humanism, symmetry, and meticulous visual composition. While Ray carved his legacy as one of India’s most beloved auteurs and a pioneer of global cinema, Anderson, a native Texan with a penchant for obsessive detail, has repeatedly cited Ray as on of his primary influences. Ray’s cinematic grammar echoes through Anderson’s work, bridging decades and oceans in a quirky dialogue between masters of aesthetic melancholy.

Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme will begin streaming on Peacock on Certified Fresh on Friday, July 25.
That’s a 56-day theatrical window on par with the filmmaker’s previous Focus Features 2023 title Asteroid City‘s screen-to-Peacock premiere.
The Phoenician Scheme follows wealthy businessman Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro) who is on the run and wanted by myriad governments, the target of scheming tycoons, foreign terrorists and determined assassins. In the midst of chaos he appoints his estranged and only daughter, a nun (Mia Threapleton), to be the sole heir of his estate. She also gets pulled into his globe trotting.
The pic also stars Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis and Benedict Cumberbatch.

I almost remember what it’s like to dislike a Wes Anderson movie, which was my first reaction to “The French Dispatch.” It began as my most anticipated Wes film because it was his first in live-action since “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” The anticipation was heightened by the fact that I was a massive Anderson fan. There were his Oscar-nominated stop motion films, “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “Isle of Dogs”, cartoons with a mature edge. “Moonrise Kingdom” was a masterful story of young love at summer camp, and “Budapest” took his meticulously designed storybook films to violent, vulgar, heartfelt, and hilarious high points. I’m sentimental for the time when going to watch this movie – my first Wes film on the big screen – which was a seven-minute walk from my house.

The film world has been abuzz with talk about Mikey Madison ever since the 26-year-old Los Angeles-born actress took home the Academy Award for Best Actress for her precise, athletic, uproarious performance in "Anora." As the center of the high-stress screwball comedy about a stripper who marries an impulsive Russian 21-year-old playboy (Mark Eydelshteyn) and then fights tooth and nail to keep her marriage from being annulled by her husband's oligarch family, there's an argument to be made that Madison is, in fact, at least partly responsible for all five of "Anora'"s Oscar wins — especially Best Picture. Not too shabby for an actress who'd never had a high-profile starring role before.
If that sounds bogus, you best believe it: Aside from two starring roles in a couple of little-seen 2017 and 2023 films, Madison had only ever played supporting parts in films and TV shows. But, if none of those...

Composer Alexandre Desplat plays “Happy Birthday to You” on his keyboard — but with a twist: the final note on “you” is higher than in the traditional melody.
It’s Igor Stravinsky’s “Greeting Prelude,” a serial variation of the familiar tune composed in 1955 for the 80th birthday of French conductor Pierre Monteux. This inventive transformation by the Russian composer inspired Desplat to, as he puts it, “bend” a piece from Stravinsky’s ballet “The Firebird” for the score of Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” now playing in theaters.
“The seed of the score comes from a piece by Stravinsky, and there’s this little, short melody that I’ve used, and twisted and expanded,” Desplat tells Variety over Zoom. “When I started playing with that, I thought about what Stravinsky had done, and tried to stay in Stravinsky’s world.”

Lemonade Blessing” (2025) revolves around the geeky teenager archetype we have seen plenty of times in American cinema. Think of Jason Schwartzman’s character from “Rushmore,” who falls in love with his teacher and naively believes that she is his soulmate. He is ready to go to any lengths, even if it means standing up against her partner. Anderson has made a career out of following similarly awkward and oftentimes socially reserved young characters who learn to grow out of their insecurities for love. Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg have played different shades of this exact character, whose social awkwardness often defines them.
Coincidentally, the star of “Lemonade Blessing,” Jake Ryan, comes from the Wes Anderson school of acting. After being in Anderson’s “Asteroid City” and “Moonrise Kingdom,” Ryan returns in a similarly zany comedy-drama as John Santucci, a socially inept teenager in constant crisis mode. “Ballerina” couldn’t twirl its way to the top of box office charts. The “John Wick” spinoff, starring Ana de Armas as a dancer-turned-assassin, launched slightly behind expectations with $25 million from 3,409 North American theaters.
The R-rated film opened in second place behind Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” which claimed the No. 1 spot for the third consecutive weekend with $32.5 million from 4,185 venues. The live-action reboot has generated $335.8 million domestically and $772 million globally and should soon become the year’s first billion-dollar release.
“Ballerina” earned a lackluster $26 million from 82 countries at the international box office for a global start of $51 million. Heading into the weekend, Lionsgate projected a domestic debut of $30 million for “Ballerina.” But even that would have been middling since the film cost $90 million to produce. Lionsgate typically covers two-thirds of its production budgets with international sales, which helps offset underperforming theatrical titles. However, the studio hopes that “Ballerina” will...

Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” and Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” dominated the U.K. and Ireland box office in May, driving the market to a robust £109.1 million ($147.7 million) total that represents a 50% increase over the same period last year, according to Comscore.
The reboot claimed the top spot with $37.4 million after just two weeks in theaters, already surpassing the $17.7 million lifetime total of the original 2002 animated film. The performance makes it the third-highest grossing release of 2025 in the territory, trailing only “A Minecraft Movie” ($76.4 million) and “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” ($62.7 million).
The latest “Lilo & Stitch” has also outpaced other recent Disney live-action remakes, including this year’s “Snow White” ($15.6 million) and previous efforts like 2019’s “Dumbo” ($34.0 million) and 2023’s “The Little Mermaid” ($37.1 million).
“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” secured second place with $26 million for the month, positioning it as the fourth-highest earner of the year.

Wes Anderson is, without a doubt, one of the most distinctive, unmistakable auteurs of contemporary cinema. From the meticulous symmetry of his framing to the carefully curated color palettes and the almost melancholic tone of his ironic humor, everything about his style screams his name. Films like Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) established a visual and narrative language that has inspired (and oversaturated) many imitators – yet none have managed to replicate it with the same precision. Even though his more recent work – like Asteroid City (2023) and The French Dispatch (2021) – left me somewhat indifferent, my curiosity to see each new project remains intact. The Phoenician Scheme doesn’t change the writer-director’s style in the slightest, but it strikes a more accessible balance between his elaborate aesthetics and a straightforward narrative.

Wes Anderson is the singularly talented filmmaker who has quickly gone from indie darling to Oscar favorite in just a little over two decades, creating a number of quirky, visually splendid classics. Let's take a look back at all 12 of Anderson's films, ranked worst to best.
Anderson made his directorial debut with "Bottle Rocket" (1996), released when he was just 27-years-old. He received his first Oscar nomination five years later: Best Original Screenplay for "The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001). He followed that eight years later with a Best Animated Feature bid for the stop-motion film "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2009). Another Best Original Screenplay nomination followed for "Moonrise Kingdom" (2012). Then he hit the Oscar jackpot with Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nominations for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014) -- well, almost hit the jackpot, since he went home empty-handed from those awards, losing all three to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for "Birdman." Focus Features’ limited launch of Wes Anderson’s espionage comedy “The Phoenician Scheme” generated $570,000 from six venues in New York and Los Angeles across the May 30-June 1 frame, translating to a $95,000 per-theater average—the strongest specialty debut of 2025 and the biggest since “Barbenheimer” year. The figure edges past A24’s previous leader “Friendship,” which opened to $445,000 on half as many screens earlier this spring.

Wes Anderson is on the Mount Rushmore (pun intended) of indie filmmakers who can consistently open their movies to a small but loyal group of core fans.
All 12 of his films have opened in a limited, platform release on just a handful of screens before expanding to over a 1,000, or in the case of “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” as many as 2,000+ screens. And you’d be hard-pressed to find many other filmmakers (perhaps contemporaries like Paul Thomas Anderson or Quentin Tarantino) who film after film have as impressive of per-theater averages from those humble beginnings.
With an estimated $570,000 from just six screens in New York and Los Angeles, Anderson’s twelfth feature “The Phoenician Scheme” has a per-theater average of $95,000 which, per data via Comscore, would be the fourth-highest PTA of his career, behind “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Asteroid City,” and “Moonrise Kingdom.” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” had the best PTA of all,...

Owen Wilsonhas had a fascinating career. Known for his comedic chops, he recently won over Marvel fans with his role as Mobius M. Mobius in the Disney+ series Loki. Wilson also has a longstanding friendship and working relationship with director and writer Wes Anderson. The two have collaborated on 8 of Anderson's films, with the last being The French Dispatch in 2021. But with Anderson's new film, The Phoenician Scheme, coming out at the same time as Wilson's new Apple TV+ series, Stick, fans are curious to see if the pair plan to collaborate again soon.
During a junket for Stick, Collider's Christina Radish asked Wilson about the potential of reuniting with his old Texas friend. When asked if doing another Anderson film was something that he was hoping for, Wilson responded that if they were to work together again, they'd want to do a Western. He went even further to...

For someone whose movies seem so meticulously crafted, director Wes Anderson sure knows how to keep them coming. In the post-pandemic era alone, the filmmaker has released three theatrical features (and four shorts on Netflix). His latest, the espionage comedy The Phoenician Scheme, opened to typically positive reviews this week, and set the record for the year's biggest debut for a limited release. Anderson is the undisputed king of the platform release; his last few movies have delivered incredible numbers in only a handful of locations.
The Phoenician Schemeopened in six locations this week, grossing over $570,000 for a per-theater average of $95,000. This is the best per-theater average of the year so far, but lower than the record $132,000 PTA that Anderson's Asteroid City scored a few years ago in four theaters. Produced on a reported budget of $25 million, Asteroid City made nearly $55 million worldwide. A couple of years before that, The...

Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme is now the top grossing limited opening of the year with an estimated $570k at just six locations in New York and LA for a per theater average of $95k. The Focus Features’ film expands to 1,500 screens next weekend.
The film unseats A24’s Friendship which kicked the indie box into high gear last month with a great $445k limited opening and $75k per theater opening for Andrew DeYoung’s feature debut starring comedian Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd. It’s at no. 8 this weekend.
The Phoenician Scheme, written by Anderson and Roman Coppola, stars Benicio del Toro as a family patriarch and business titan beset by rivals and assassins, and Mia Threapleton as his daughter, a nun, whom he wants to inherit it all. Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" was alternately the most fascinating and frustrating film of 2024. Cinephiles who'd been pining away for one last big-swing masterpiece from the maestro who gave us the "Godfather" trilogy, "The Conversation," and "Apocalypse Now" were mostly respectfully perplexed by Coppola's science-fiction saga; there were true believers out there, but the general consensus was that his vision of an empire in decline was intellectually fuzzy. On one hand, it was a godsend to receive an epic so stuffed with ideas that you couldn't possibly break it down on a single viewing; alas, it was hard to work up the enthusiasm to dive back in because the film lacked the sumptuous sweep of those aforementioned masterpieces.
Of course, Coppola is too great a filmmaker and "Megalopolis" is far too ambitious a film to leave it as a one-and-done experience. A movie this difficult might just open up on subsequent viewings.

Wes Anderson has done it again. Just when cinephiles thought his films couldn’t get any more visually eccentric or narratively offbeat, he goes and drops news of a new movie that’s dripping with retro espionage charm and pastel chaos. The Phoenician Scheme, set to hit theaters in June 2025, already feels like a wild ride—and fans don’t even know the full story yet.
Co-created with his longtime collaborator Roman Coppola, this upcoming black comedy feels like it belongs in a curated art exhibit already—and we don’t even need the plot to be sold on it. The hype machine is officially in motion.
Anderson is the kind of director who builds entire cinematic worlds with obsessive detail. His love for symmetrical shots, color-coded wardrobes, and deadpan humor turns every frame into a painting. Plus, he’s known for rolling with a regular crew—think Bill Murray,...

Focus Features has done a full takeover of the Angelika Film Center with The Phoenician Scheme on all six screens for filmmaker Wes Anderson’s latest. There’s a lobby and café redesign for full immersion, a jazz band, custom cocktails, t-shirts and totes as the film, which clocked a lengthy standing ovation at its recent Cannes world premiere (see Deadline review) bows theatrically in limited release at six locations including NYC’s Alamo Brooklyn and AMC Lincoln Square and AMC’s The Grove, Century City and Burbank in LA.
Around this time in 2023, Anderson’s Asteroid City, also from Focus, delivered a massive jolt to the arthouse and specialty world with a $790k three-day weekend, also at six theaters, including a takeover of the Landmark LA. To paraphrase a famous historical father figure, I come to psychoanalyze Wes Anderson's movies, not Anderson himself. To put it mildly, Anderson's films are suffused with Daddy Issues. From Royal Tenenbaum to Steve Zissou to the fantastic Mr. Fox himself, Anderson's filmography is littered with problematic patriarchs. Yet it'd be inaccurate to label these characters as wholly bad people, for each of them has a journey to take which teaches them how to be better fathers, better leaders, and most of all, better men. While the problematic patriarch is an Anderson trope as much as color-coded costumes and diorama-like sets, the filmmaker has found various ways to play around with the archetype rather than always directly portray it. For instance, "The Darjeeling Limited" is notable in that its father figure is (allegedly) never seen, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" features a hotel concierge acting as a substitute father for his bellhop,...

Bryan Cranston isn’t slowing down any time soon, most recently reuniting with Wes Anderson for “The Phoenician Scheme,” their latest collaboration following “Asteroid City” in 2023 and “Isle of Dogs” in 2018. In Anderson’s latest, he plays Reagan, the brother of Tom Hanks’ character. We caught up with the actor at the film’s New York City premiere on Wednesday, May 28.
Amid his busy schedule, he will soon return to the “Malcolm in the Middle” reboot, reuniting with original cast members Jane Kaczmarek, Frankie Muniz, Christopher Masterson, and Justin Berfield. “Seeing the family was the best part,” he told IndieWire about returning to the series, which ran for 151 episodes across seven seasons from 2000 to 2006.
“It’s been 20 years since we said goodbye, and now we’re seeing the family again and each person,” he said. “All the boys were around the same age, now, that I was when I started 25 years ago.

Arriving in theaters later this week, The Phoenician Scheme is Wes Anderson's latest directorial effort, a spy comedy that stars Academy Award-winning actor Benicio del Toro in the lead role. Critics have landed on a verdict for the film, and while some might believe his unique filmmaking style is getting repetitive, most agree that it's another compelling installment in Anderson's filmography. The film is set to hit theaters on May 30, 2025.
As of this writing, The Phoenician Scheme boasts a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 80 reviews by critics. Early reception for the Anderson-directed project claims that it falls well within the formula the filmmaker has crafted over the decades. Whether you love him or not, it's unquestionable that Wes Anderson is one of the most recognizable directors of the past 30 years. With his signature color palette, centered framing, and offbeat, often emotionless characters, Anderson has carved one of the most impressive filmographies in modern cinema. However, recent entries in the visionary's catalog, Asteroid City or The French Dispatch, have received mixed responses from fans, with many still marveling over the auteur's style and others finding his latter work to have fallen into self-parody.

Oscar winner Wes Anderson returns to Deadline’s Crew Call to shed some light on his writing process and how he came up with The Phoenician Scheme, a project he first started breaking around the time of his second Cannes premiere, 2021’s The French Dispatch.

The Phoenician Scheme director Wes Anderson has mocked Donald Trump’s proposed 100% tariffs on films made outside the US.
“The tariff is interesting because I’ve never heard of a 100% tariff before,” said Anderson in a tongue-in-cheek response to a question from Screenat the Cannes press conference for his Competition title.
“I’m not an expert in that area of economics, but I feel that means he’s saying he’s going to take all the money. And then what do we get? So it’s complicated to me. Can you hold up the movie in customs? It doesn’t ship that way.

As an American writer-director who now lives and makes his films in Europe, Wes Anderson could be a target for Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on films made outside the U.S. But at a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday, Anderson mostly appeared confused by the president’s vague proclamations.
“The tariff is fascinating,” Anderson said when asked about the issue. “I’ve never heard of a 100% tariff. I feel that he’s saying he’s going to take all the money, and then what do we get?”
He grinned and shrugged. “It’s complicated to me. Can you hold up the movie in customs? I want to know the details first. And I’ll hold off on my official answer.”
Anderson made the comments at a press conference with actors Benicio del Toro, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Cera, Mia Threapleton, Riz Ahmed, Rupert Friend and Richard Ayoade.

Among the members of the ensemble cast joining him on stage were Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend, and Ayoade. Frequent Anderson collaborator Bill Murray, was also in attendance, but sat in the audience, jumping to his feet when Anderson and the rest of the cast entered, leading the crowd in welcoming applause.

Leave it to Wes Anderson to bring a touch of whimsy to the Trump tariff war.
Asked about Trump’s proposal to introduce a 100 percent tariff on “foreign-made movies,” at the Cannes press conference for his new feature, The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson played perplexed.
“I’m not an expert in that area of economics, but a 100 percent tariff? I feel like that means he’s (Trump’s) going to take all of the money, and then what do we get?” the director mused. “Can you hold up the movies in customs? I feel it doesn’t ship that way. I want to know the details, so I’ll hold off my official answer.”

Wes Anderson largely kept tightlipped about his next feature project other than to say it does “have a darkness.” He’s collaborating with Roman Coppola again, who the filmmaker always co-writes with, as well as The Phoenician Scheme star Richard Ayoade on the next title.
Anderson didn’t specify whether Ayoade was starring and/or co-writing. Ayoade starred in two Roald Dahl short adaptations of Anderson’s: Oscar winner The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and The Rat Catcher. Ayoade plays Sergio in Phoenician Scheme, which is Anderson’s fourth pic to premiere in Competition at Cannes.

The breaking news out of the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday was that Wes Anderson made another Wes Anderson movie.
The Oscar-winning director launched The Phoenician Scheme at the prestigious festival, the fourth time Anderson has premiered one of his projects on the French Riviera following Moonrise Kingdom, The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City.
“More linear than Asteroid City or The Grand Budapest Hotel and yet significantly harder to follow than either of them, The Phoenician Scheme is the busiest of Anderson’s films, and also — at least on first viewing — the least rewarding,” wrote Indiewire critic David Ehlrich in his mixed review. It’s a sentiment shared by several top critics.
“The swashbuckling sire, the deadpan ingénue, the sans serif font, the one-point perspective — Anderson’s held fast to his favorite elements even as his canvases have gotten broader and his style even more fastidious,” wrote Vulture critic Alison Wilmore.

It’s not Cannes without Wes Anderson, and the Houston native’s The Phoenician Scheme has its world premiere Sunday night in Cannes, notching a 7½-minute ovation. First-time Anderson-film star Mia Threapleton was tearing up as the crowd’s applause continued.
“The only thing really I can think to say — I think of 12 words to say that would stand for everything in this movie,” Anderson said to the audience after the screening. He then proceeded to point at and name-check his castmates who were on hand, along with longtime writing and producing partner Roman Coppola. Here’s how it went down:
