Useful can be the fair term to define this short film, especially for reflection who it inspires.

In life, the term "Black and White" typically defines an issue that is as obvious as, well, black and white. But how did we get here, and what are we perpetuating by using the words unthinkingly? That is the central theme here, illustrated in a strikingly visual surrounding.

"Black & White" aims to get the audience to reconsider --and perhaps challenge-- accepted norms. Clocking in at less than five minutes, it is trimmed of all but the necessary, and yet does not feel rushed, allowing time for consideration.

Stunningly photographed in --ironically-- often vivid colors, the film benefits from a strong lead performance and high production values. Writer/director Edgar Garcia Chavez has artfully achieved an environment that is at first welcoming, before ultimately turning claustrophobic; demanding we reevaluate those issues we previously may have considered... black & white.

From the opening titles through the entire film, we are asked to acknowledge contrasts. A disembodied voice establishes dictionary definitions that have become entrenched in behaviour, as well as prevailing attitudes in society. With powerful visuals along a spectrum of colors beyond black & white, there is a humanizing of the solitary figure, the sole actor, who comes to represent the suffocating influence of everyday acceptance of the separation through those definitions. Stark in style and tone, this short film packs a powerful punch in a short running time. Symbolism as Activism and vice versa. Thoughtful and thought-provoking, Edgar Garcia Chavez has masterfully summarized 400 years of American history into just under five minutes.
